Welcome everybody to episode 45 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. I would like to sincerely thank all the interviewees, listeners and the soccer public of the Illawarra, Australia and the World who download this podcast. Additionally I would like to say thank you to the people who contribute, comment and reminisce on the social media pages. If you have any photos, programmes or newspaper articles then please message me directly on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter so we can display them to the public.Matthew Bailey started playing junior soccer with Russell Vale Junior Soccer Club in the mid to late 1980s from U7s through to U10s. Matt’s proficiency on the field saw him selected in the under 11s Illawarra representative team. After a couple of seasons here, Matt moved onto the junior Wollongong Wolves representative teams from U13s through to U16s, where the support of his family was immense, his footballing talent evolved and lifelong friendships were formed. He then joined the NSL youth team with the Wollongong Wolves for 3 years in the latter part of his teenage years. The team was always strong and Matt thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Wolves, in particular the football opportunities it afforded him. After the Wolves, Matt then entered the Illawarra Premier League with the Phil Carr coached Northern United in 1999, it was a great year as they won the league and Matt was playing at a club where his Dad was involved and where he played amongst mates. In the next few seasons Matt played with Kemblawarra, Western Suburbs, Port Kembla and Cringila Lions. At these clubs Matt played under great coaches in Fleming, Gaffney, Alston and Glover and he significantly contributed on the field with quality team mates. Additionally Matt was awarded Illawarra Premier League player of the year in 2002, won the League and Grand Final double with Port Kembla and played regular finals football. In 2005 he joined Bulli Football Club under Alan Mangles. It was here where he spent 3 very good years and in the latter 2 seasons he was coached again by Adrian Alston. In 2007 Matt’s stellar season was rewarded with a second player of the year award (now named the George Naylor medal). In 2008 Matt pushed himself personally by joining the Wollongong Wolves in the NPL under John Turner. This year was important for many reasons and it was fascinating to hear Matt describe this season. After off-field decisions in 2009 re-shaped the Wolves, Matt re-joined Bulli FC for a season. He performed well that year and enjoyed the club, but the desire to perform at the NPL level meant that Matt joined Robbie Stanton’s Sutherland in 2010. At Sutherland Matt immensely enjoyed his football, Robbie, the playing group and the Club/facilities. Team accolades followed but this stint for Matt meant more than just the trophies, it was pushing himself, the delight of thorough preparation during the week and enjoying time with the family on game days.Next Matt went back to Bulli FC and enjoyed a great couple of years at the Club under Ben Smith in 2012 and 2013. The next year Matt again re-joined the Wolves to give back to the club that had given him so much. A huge highlight in this year was the FFA Cup tie versus Central Coast, to hear the personal pride Matt exudes in captaining the club and sharing this moment with so many in the Illawarra was a high point for me.After retiring from playing, Matt had 5 fantastic years at Bulli FC, firstly as a youth grade coach and then as a first grade coach. What he has achieved is amazing and speaks volumes of his abilities as a coach and aligning himself around great people. The conversation around breaking Bulli’s first grade grand final hoodoo was beautiful to hear. From my perspective the interview spoke to me about Matt’s perpetual determination to push his playing and coaching talents as far as he could, the friendships he has developed over time and the amazing support of his wife, parents and his children. Publicly I would like to thank Matt for interrupting his Sunday afternoon so I could interview him about his journey. I hope you take pleasure in this interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.

This month Julia (0:59) starts us off with the relationship between loneliness and health after listening to an episode of 'All in the Mind', a podcast that explores the connections between the brain and behaviour. She stresses that loneliness is something that everyone is vulnerable to and is becoming more of a problem in our modern world. In the podcast episode, it was suggested that simple acts of kindness and exchange could help overcome this isolating feeling. Jodie questions whether 'fictive kinship' might be more successful and Simon gives us a comparison between Australia and Iran between the ways people go about their daily activities: is it less about what we do and more about who we do it with? Next Matt (5:55) has his podcast debut with positionality. This is something he has been looking at in his science communication Masters recently. He asks us what our own positions were during our fieldwork and what these positions mean for anthropologists during their research. Julia adds that "it's about the power that you bring to the space ... [it] could colour the interactions that you're having with people, and whether or not people can be as natural with you as they might be in everyday life.” Simon says that he was simultaneously different things to different people and even was questioned about being a spy. Jodie tells us that her physical appearance impacted on how her fieldwork played out and how this may or may not foster trust. Jodie (11:05) then reflects the recent media incident where Trump was portrayed as saying that asylum seekers aren't people but instead animals. Although the Tweets have since been exposed as being misleading, it led Jodie to wonder what a 'person' is: is Superman a 'person'? What about our pets - is the phrase "pets are people too" really accurate? What are the boundaries around 'people' and 'personhood'? Is this a matter of perspective? Finally, Simon (15:42) wraps up our can-of-worms podcast by asking: what is violence? Given the vague and imprecise concept of violence, he asks us how do we broaden our conceptualisation of violence? Julia offers: "I think that when it comes to violence... it's about how the person afflicted experiences it." Jodie asks whether we can define Government restrictions that have a negative effect on those experiencing it as 'violence'? Simon and Matt consider whether fighting and BDSM is 'violence' and Jodie finishes by suggesting that maybe 'violence' exists where consensual boundaries are crossed. Phil provides commentary on a bird fight he witnessed between crows, blue jays and little sparrows. Matt admits that he is a sinker who is afraid of zombies. Who knew? Matt’s Anthropology 101 (14:27) This episode is a succinct overview of anthropology, the study of human culture. Every anthropologist has their own definition of culture but these definitions change like culture itself. Matt reads the Clifford Geertz ‘Webs of Signification’ definition and then offers his own. The traditional division is between American and Continental (European) Anthropology; AA’s traditionally follow linguist C.S. Peirce (Pragmatic Semiotics) whereas CA’s follow Ferdinand de Saussure (relational binary model: signified-signifier). Phil and Matt have their first little debate. The early history of anthropology (1860-1920’s) is mired in racism and eugenics. Arm-chair ‘scholars’ would collect cultural artifacts sent to them by ‘field-agents’ and compose racial classification schemes that ranked groups of people around presumed moral-potential based on superficial physical differences. Notable early exceptions were Paul Radin and Edward Sapir. Phil and Matt close out the early history with a brief conversation about the Bureau of American Ethnology and how it both systematized the discipline while also being responsible for rampant cultural appropriation. Franz Boas and Bronislaw Malinowski are identified as the first modern anthropologists. Both engaged in fieldwork collecting data through participant observation, interviews and other methods like kinship charts, collecting mythologies and material culture. Boas and Malinowski revolutionized the discipline by taking account of cultural ‘difference’ in a non-judgmental ‘scientifically rigorous’ manner, which is called cultural relativism. Boas founded the Four-Field model of American Anthropology and Malinowski codified the ethnographic method of participant observation, cultural dislocation and semi-structured interviews along with the theoretical tradition of structural functionalism and british social anthropology. Malinowski, like many others, was influenced by Freudian thinking which can be seen in his use of comparative categories in Structural Functionalism. Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead were Boas’ main protégées. Malinowski’s students were E.E. Evans-Pritchard who promoted structural functionalism and Talcott Parsons who both expanded SF and ‘founded’ the influential field of social action theory. Phil thinks we should stop going to ‘other places’ and messing around in people’s cultures is not needed anymore, Matt tries to answer this charge by talking about ‘manufacturing ethnographic distance’ in his concussion research. Third debate: Claude Levi-Strauss was a french anthropologist who founded the field of structuralism in the 1950’s. He was concerned with mythologies and linguistics (Saussure style) but he took a lot of criticism in the 1980’s over the ‘over-application’ of his theoretical model. Matt lists some of the classic text-book critiques of structuralism while Phil argues that structuralism uses an historical methodology. Matt argues that structuralism is more about relations (act and react for example) and reads a quote from Levi-Strauss’ obituary which was his ‘final word’ to all the critics. Next Matt speaks about Clifford Geertz. Geertz came from literary studies and as such he was interested in semiotics and linguistics. He helped initiate a ‘return to culture’ (theoretically), a renewed focus on our writing (ethnography) and using ‘thick descriptions’ to show cultural nuance. At the time Geertz was having influence (late 70’s, early 80’s) anthropologists started getting heavily criticized heavily by english and literature departments around how we ‘represent Others’. Writing Culture was the book that was meant to answer these critiques. Matt finishes off the conversation by name dropping three of his favorites as a way of explaining post-modern approaches in anthropology. Sherry Ortner (1974 and 1984) wrote two great theory papers and has just published a follow up “Theory Since the 1980’s”. Nancy Sheper-Hughes ‘returned to the field’ to account for herself and her ethnography, what we now call ‘ethnographic responsibility’. Renato Rosaldo illustrated the value of emotional-reflexivity as a research method. Phil asks about contemporary and applied anthropology. We finish off with our fourth and best debate about investing agency in non-human actors à la Bruno Latour. Recommendations (1:32:25) Matt recommends a podcast for the chronically ill, Sickboy. Sometimes you need to find humor in pain and this podcast certainly does that! Phil recommends Michael Paterniti’s The Telling Room (The Dial Press, 2013) which is a story about cheese, procrastination and Spanish culture. Concluding thought: Rather than building disciplinary walls, it’s better to jump over them to exchange ideas -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Semi-Intellectual Musings on Twitter: @The_SIM_Pod Email Matt & Phil: semiintellectual@gmail.com Subscribe to the podcast: https://thesim.podbean.com/feed/ iTunes: https://goo.gl/gkAb6V Stitcher: https://goo.gl/PfiVWJ GooglePlay: https://goo.gl/uFszFq Corrections & Additions webpage: http://thesim.podbean.com/p/corrections-additional-stuff/ Please leave us a rating and a review, it really helps the show! How you can end up licking stamps for Scientologists, pumpkin heads (I kid you not), and why you might want to feed pumpkin to the men in your life What you will learn how you can change your feelings about a scary event in your past why you might want to feed pumpkin to the men in your life At the end of this episode I'll share with you three things that you probably don't know about pumpkin, including why you might want to feed some to the men in your life. Oh - and the story also features a brief appearance of three pumpkin heads... On with the story Living in Paris, France This story takes place in Paris, France, where I discovered in my twenties that there are all kinds of weird and wonderful (sometimes not so wonderful) ways to make money. If you've listened to my previous episodes, you'll know that for a while I was living with a kind of crazy French guy (whom I call Dave) who used hypnosis to teach people English (more about that in Episode 1). Unfortunately for us both, Dave wound up getting totally sucked into the world of Scientologists. This is how one day I found myself licking stamps for them and getting more than a glimpse into their inner world, which had some good things about it but also some pretty creepy things. It's also how I came to see the pumpkin heads, which turned out to be a very good thing. But first I need to start by telling you how Dave and I got involved with the Scientologists in the first place. My first encounter with Scientologists Dave and I were walking along the Paris streets at night - as you do because it's just so beautiful - and we saw this poster outside a beautiful building that advertised a talk given by the Scientologists on past lives. The talk was happening in like 10 minutes, so we thought, "Great! Perfect timing!" Plus it was a free talk, so we figured we had nothing to lose. In our defence, we didn't know anything about Scientologists at that time. Dave wound up losing his apartment which he'd bought himself as well as his health, but that's another story. We attended the talk, and while the content was pretty interesting, it basically turned out to be a big pitch to sign up for one of their courses. The courses were pretty expensive, but they said that you could attend the courses for free in exchange for volunteering. So Dave and I were curious and we thought, "Why not?" How to get free food You also could get free food if you helped them with some extra stuff, which is where the licking stamps comes in. I was desperate for an income at that time, and I figured that if licking stamps for Scientologists for a couple of hours was what it took to at least get food, I'd do that. It was pretty easy work. I was basically in a basement office with this other girl, and she stuffed envelopes while I licked stamps. Then they'd feed me and I'd go back home. That part was easy. As for the pumpkin heads, well that part's coming up now. Getting 'clear' So in exchange for our volunteering, we not only got some free courses, but we also got a free auditing session with a trainer. An auditing session at that time was a one-on-one session, so a bit like a therapy session, where the goal is to help you achieve a state of mind that the Scientologists call 'clear'. They told us that being 'clear' means that you're free from irrational fears, phobias, insecurities and that kind of thing. Sounds good, right? Who wouldn't want to be free of those things? I was totally willing to give it a go because I thought it would be really interesting. And I was right. It was extremely interesting. While a lot of Scientology is just plain scary - and I'll share why in the next episode - some of their principles are actually useful. The key word here though is 'some'. Not all. Definitely not. My auditing session For my auditing session, I went into a small room with what looked like a long dentist's chair with squishy cushions. The auditor - I have no idea what his name was, so I'll call him Matt - told me to lay back, relax and close my eyes. He then asked me to think of a time when something happened to me that I found either scary, stressful or otherwise unpleasant. And that was easy because this all took place just a few weeks after my run-in with three teenage gangsters on a train (which I talk about in Episode 6). Tell me a story... Next Matt asked me to tell him the story of what happened, so I did. I told him everything, starting from when they got on the train, then everything that happened with the gun (which I won't go through again here as that's in my previous episode), and finishing with them leaving the train. Once I'd told the story, I was expecting Matt to ask me questions, or make a comment or something. What I didn't expect was him to say rather blankly, "Tell me again". I was like "The whole thing? Again?" He was like "Yes, again". So I did. I told the whole story again...and again...and again. I must have told that story about ten times, and after each time I was thinking 'surely this is enough, he must be getting bored by now' but he would just keep saying "Again". Part of me was thinking "Damn, I could be doing this at home with a couple of girlfriends or something, not much therapy or change going on here". But I complied and repeated the story from the exact same place and ending at the exact same point. From 'fear gear' to 'neutral' Suddenly on the 11th telling or so, I just burst out laughing. What I saw was just so funny, I couldn't stop laughing. So Matt asks, "What's so funny?" And I told him that the three guys came into the train and each of them had a huge pumpkin for a head. I mean, you had to be there to find that funny I think, but for me it was hilarious. And in that moment I understood the power of this particular technique: the negativity around the experience was completely gone. It really did feel cleared out. Even when I talk about it now, it's like it doesn't have any emotional impact on me, it feels neutral. Neither positive nor negative. It's very weird. How useful is it to feel neutral, really? Now before you think I'm going to start singing the praises of Scientology, let me just say that for this particular experience, feeling neutral about it I think is a good thing. But I wouldn't want to feel neutral about everything difficult that ever happened to me. I don't know what you think and I'd quite like to know so feel free to pop your thoughts in the comments. For my part, I'd rather feel healed or integrated than neutral. This was at the very beginning of my experience with the Scientologists, but a few short weeks later I was running out of there totally freaked out. I couldn't wait to put lots of distance between me and them - and I'll share why in the next episode. On to the pumpkin goodies For now though, I'd like to share with you three things that you may not know about pumpkin, including why it could be an important food for men. Benefits of pumpkin First, did you know that you don't have to cook pumpkin? You can actually eat it raw, and I'll say more about that in a moment. Second, pumpkin is one of the best sources of beta-carotene, which gives it its orange color and converts into Vitamin A once we eat it. This is important because foods rich in beta-carotene are thought to help delay aging, fight cancer and prevent degenerative damage to the eyes which occurs as we get older. So pretty powerful stuff. I'll link to an article that goes into all of these benefits in more detail. It also has links to in-depth scientific studies, just so you can see that I'm not making this up. By the way, the article that I'll link to mentions that pumpkin and other beta-carotene-rich foods can be particularly effective against prostate cancer. So ladies, make sure the men in your life are getting some pumpkin in their diet, OK? And third, pumpkin is actually a great food if you're trying to slim down or not overeat. It has a lot of fiber for very little calories compared to other foods. You can make it into bread, cookies, crumbles and all kinds of delicious food. Some ideas for eating pumpkin Now, how do you eat pumpkin? Well, as I said, you can eat it raw. But whether you decide to cook it or not, you definitely have to peel it. The easiest way is to cut round the top of the pumpkin as if you were going to carve it, take the top out, and then scrape out the seeds and the fleshy fibrous bits. By the way, don't throw away the seeds. You can wash them and then dry them out and eat them. Some people toss them in oil and salt and bake them, but I just pop mine in a dehydrator and dry them out that way. As for your pumpkin, once you've removed the seeds and the stringy bits, you cut it in half and then into quarters, and peel each quarter with a strong knife. You'll be left with the flesh, which you can roughly chop and put right into your food processor or blender to make a smoothie or puree or whatever. I've got a recipe for Pumpkin Mousse on my blog which I'll link to in the show notes if you'd like to give it a try. It takes 5 minutes and is delicious.
