The Christmas story is filled with wonder, but it is also filled with real people who struggled to believe what God was doing around them. In Luke 1 we meet Zechariah and Elizabeth, a faithful couple who had no idea how their long season of waiting would become part of God's plan to bring the Savior into the world. Zechariah wrestled with doubt when an angel announced that their prayers would be answered and that their child would prepare the way for Jesus. His silence became a sacred space where God taught him what he could not learn in the noise. Their waiting showed that God is always working on more than we can see, even when the timing feels confusing. Their story reminds us that doubt does not disqualify us and that nothing is impossible with God. Mary believed because of the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, and you can too. The science of human origins keeps producing new theories. But are we any closer to telling a true story of human origins? Or are we simply drowning in data? Earlier this November, the chair of UCSD's Department of Anthropology invited me to explore this question in a campus talk. My optimistic claim was that underneath many of the field's important debates, a powerful story has been emerging. At its core, this is a story about calories, cooperation, and climate change. In September 1975, 17 days apart, two women, one in Sacramento and the other in San Francisco, attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford. The first attempt on September the 5th came from Annette Squeaky Fromm. The Charles Manson follower spent over 30 years in prison, is out on parole, and is 76 years old. The other attempt came on the non-entrance side of St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco on September the 24th, 1975. The shooter, Sara Jane Moore, served 32 years in prison and died almost 50 years to the day on September the 24th, 2025. Author Geri Spieler wrote the book "Housewife Assassin" in 2009. Today Justin is joined by repeat gues Trevor Barnes, who writes on national security issues for the London Standard Newspaper and is a former senior reporter for the British Broadcasting Corporation. He is the author of Dead Doubles The Extraordinary Worldwide Hunt for One of the Cold War's Most Notorious Spy Rings. That was the story of the infamous KGB Portland spying, which operated in England in the 1950s. If you're a longtime listener, you may remember Trevor from his previous appearances here on the podcast for episode 33 when we discussed the Portland spying, and more recently in episode 192 when we discussed the recent trial of a Bulgarian spy ring operating in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. He's here to discuss a very recent and serious case of Russia-linked sabotage in London, directed by the Wagner Private Military Corporation that targeted a warehouse shipping supplies to Ukraine.
