Sermon for the 8th Sunday after Pentecost :: Pastor Barrett Grebing by Pastor Ryan Tinetti
Some of the most prolific characters in the Bible are the Wise Men. The magi's narrative of following a star, avoiding capture and tricking Herod, paying homage and bringing gifts to the newborn king, and escaping home thanks to the voice of God make it one of the best stories you can tell. It even has ramifications for how we can begin our new year and listen for God's voice and follow God's star.
Season 3 Episode 40 -- Pastor Barrett Marshall joins me in this podcast today. He is the senior pastor of Greenville Christian Fellowship in Greenville S.C. We begin by discussing the reality of how imperfect we human fathers are apart from abiding in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. Without having a healthy relationship with our Heavenly Father through Christ our Lord ourselves, we will never be able to disciple and shepherd our sons and daughters as earthly fathers. We continue by discussing how one generation of fathers can pass on God's truth to the next generation of fathers in an ever increasing spiritually fruitful way. We explain how critically important it is to understand that truth out of balance leads to heresy. Some of the practical points we discuss concerning fathers avoiding provoking children to wrath are: # 1 -- Time With Your Children # 2 Refusing to listen carefully to your children # 3 Permitting or Tolerating Bad Behavior # 4 Demanding Too Much From The Children. A book written by John R. Rice is recommended entitled "The Home" --Courtship, Marriage and Children. In this book there is substantial information as to how Susannah Wesley approached parenting and some of the essential Biblical Principles required if fathers and mothers are to see spiritual fruitfulness in the lives of their children. We also explain that many times it is out of failure we fathers discover the truth of how to properly bring up the children God has entrusted to us. Pastor Barrett spends some time explaining exactly what does it mean to "provoke them to wrath." We seek to give illustrations out of our own lives as fathers and also illustrations out of the lives of other fathers to help us all gain the proper understanding of how to be a godly father. At the end Pastor Barrett shares how our heart goes out to every father because we all know the challenges we encounter in seeking to properly train, disciple, discipline and shepherd the hearts of sons and daughters. May God fill each of you fathers with the wisdom and understanding you need from Him so that you can effectively lead your children to come to know salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ and they also can come to know the only perfect Father there is -- God our Heavenly Father !! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/randy-cook/message

Pastor T.L. Barrett has been known on Chicago's South side as a religious and community leader for 50 years. But it wasn't until recently that people started to uncover Barrett's trove of gospel music. In the 1970s, Barrett began making recordings of the music performed in his church. These were sermons he'd turn into songs that sat around for years until rappers started sampling them in the last decade. People like Kanye West, T.I., DJ Khalid, Alicia Keys. All this recent attention on Pastor T.L. Barrett has culminated in a new box set from the Numero Group called “I Should Wear A Crown." On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Pastor Barrett about his distant relation to the Reverend C.L. Franklin and of course his daughter, the great Aretha Franklin. Pastor Barrett also talks about how he went from a high school dropout to a community leader. Plus what it was like for him to have his music discovered after decades. Have you ever felt like your family was a bit dysfunctional? Maybe especially dysfunctional? In one way or another, we can all relate. All of our families have problems of some kind within. For followers of Jesus, two important questions emerge: How do we handle the presence and consequences of sin in our families? How can we live with hope in the midst of this dysfunction? In this episode, you will learn six characteristics of those who live with hope in the midst of family dysfunction. In this episode, Pastor Barrett will help you understand these six godly attitudes toward your family from Scripture. He will also lead you toward a pathway to desire and experience these characteristics personally and practically in your life. Today we paused our sermon series to observe World Communion Sunday. The sermons are spliced together with Pastor Kristen reflecting on the Bread and Pastor Barrett reflecting on the Cup. "The Eucharistic meal is meant to be a microcosmic event, summarizing at one table what is true in the whole macrocosm: We are one, we are equal in dignity, we all eat of the same divine food, and Jesus is still and always “eating with sinners” (for which people hated him) just as he did when on Earth." - Richard Rohr
Today is the National Day of Prayer. Typically, our Senior Saints would have hosted a meal and invited a guest speaker to explore more nuances and insights about prayer, but due to COVID-19, we had to cancel. But thanks to technology, we can still glean from and listen together for God’s abiding presence in our lives. Follow along as Pastor Barrett introduces us to the Examen. This ancient, Jesuit prayer practice can still be used today.

MAKE THE MAIN THING . . . THE MAIN THING! The biggest obstacle to taking the great commandment seriously is TIME. When we say, I don’t have time to get to know my neighbor. What we are really saying is “I don’t consider getting to know my neighbor as important as everything else that is.” Pastor Barrett puts things in order.
Revelation 22 is one of Pastor Barrett’s favorite texts. It’s the last chapter of the Bible and the last image God gives us to think about our relationship with the Divine. It just so happens to be a scene at the river of the water of life with the tree of life growing. These five verses draw perhaps the most important image of what our future (the telos) entails. Hint: we reign with God forever and ever.
Pastor Barrett of the Empowered Living Church is brilliant in how he simplifies and ignites with his words of wisdom.
