Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing. Jesus said, I AM the Main Thing! MESSAGE SUMMARY: Today, we delve into the profound mystery of the Holy Spirit and its vital role in our Christian walk. We're reminded that it's not just about having the Holy Spirit, but allowing the Spirit to have us - to lead and guide our lives. The message emphasizes three key sins against the Holy Spirit: grieving, quenching, and blaspheming. When we choose bitterness over love, or hold onto unforgiveness, we grieve the Spirit. Every time we sin, we quench the Spirit's flow in our lives. Yet, there's hope in confession, which reopens the floodgates of the Spirit's presence. This teaching challenges us to examine our hearts: Are we truly yielding to the Spirit's guidance? Are we living holy lives that honor God? It's a call to deeper surrender and a reminder of our constant need for the Spirit's empowering presence in our faith journey. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Compulsions. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Patience. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). When the Mic Turns Around What happens when interviewer becomes interviewee? In this special role-reversal episode of The Main Thing, longtime friend Chip VanAlsburg steps in as host to turn the microphone on Skip Lineberg. Together, they explore the origin story behind the podcast, the deeper spiritual motivation driving it, and what it really takes to distill knowledge into wisdom that helps people get better at life. Pulling Back the Curtain on The Main Thing From childhood conversations with elders to the "Holy Spirit moment" that birthed the show. And from the unseen, labor-intensive work behind each 25-minute episode… Skip pulls back the curtain, as Chip presents his own brand of insightful, soul-piercing questions. On Light, Leadership, and the Long Game The duo also dives into: Why growth isn't for everyone (and why that's okay) What it means to live effulgently—radiating light and love Reframing "empty nest" into "spacious nest" The butterfly effect of sharing wisdom And how knowledge becomes wisdom only when it's lived and shared Last but not least, Chip shares his own emerging vision—an honest, heartfelt look at trauma, healing, storytelling, and what he calls "big medicine." If you've ever wondered why this podcast exists—or what wisdom is really for—this conversation will meet you right where you are. Press play. Reflect deeply. Share generously. A Bit More About Our Wise Guest-Host Chip VanAlsburg is a big thinker with a restless mind and a wide-open heart. He challenges assumptions, pushes boundaries, and rarely accepts "no" as the final answer—especially when curiosity or conviction is involved. Bold and unafraid, Chip has spent more than two decades leading in the media, technology, and telecommunications worlds, holding roles such as General Manager, Vice President, and most recently Director at Lumen Technologies in Pittsburgh. But titles only tell part of the story. Chip is a glutton for experiences, with a voracious appetite for life and learning. He's an avid user of emojis, deeply fond of laughter, and unashamed of tears when the moment calls for them. His ego is squarely in check, even as his irises stay cranked wide open in a lifelong quest for peace, perspective, and enlightenment. What makes Chip compelling isn't just what he's accomplished—it's how he shows up: courageous, curious, emotionally honest, and fully engaged with the world around him. He brings that same energy and depth to conversation, making him the kind of guest who doesn't just share insights—he invites reflection. Now, buckle up and get ready to join the duo in exploring the concept of living a good life by pursuing purpose with humility, resilience and faith. This episode was recorded in-person, face-to-face inside Parkwood Studios in Almost Heaven, West Virginia. They discuss how to disciple a team of 30 people when you can only really pour into 5 or 6, why production should enhance worship without becoming the focus, and why planning doesn't limit the Holy Spirit - it actually creates space for him to move. Sean also shares why he has no desire to return to vocational ministry anytime soon, the "make it better" trap that burns out worship pastors, and the one simple rule that will save your sanity: Sundays are for service, not evaluation. In This Episode Discipleship at scale - You can't disciple 30 people on your own, so here's how to train disciples to be disciplers and create a sustainable leadership structure How production supports worship - Why the pendulum is swinging away from production-heavy worship, and how to let production enhance rather than distract Planning and the Holy Spirit - Why "I just want to be led by the Spirit" is a cop-out, and how good planning actually creates space for spontaneity The biggest pitfall - Why not keeping the main thing the main thing is the fastest way to burn out your team and lose sight of why you're actually there Practical tips for sustainability - Why Sundays are for service not evaluation, how to build yearly rhythms that include rest, and when to do acoustic sets to reset expectations Timestamps 00:00 - How to Disciple Your Team When You're Always On Stage 04:42 - How Production Supports Worship Without Becoming the Focus 09:53 - Systems and Planning: The Holy Spirit Shows Up on Monday Too 16:03 - The Biggest Pitfall: Not Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing 19:10 - The "Make It Better" Trap and How to Avoid Burnout 23:23 - Practical Tips: Sundays Are for Service, Not Evaluation Key Quotes "You can't lead 30 people on your own. PREVIEW Professor Barry Strauss discusses the Bar Kokhba Revolt, which occurred in the 130s to 140s, long after the Temple fell in 70 AD. The main thing motivating the revolt was the Roman declaration that the Temple would never be rebuilt and that Jerusalem would never again be a Jewish capital. Rome maintained its vast empire through brutal intimidation. While the Romans were brutal, the sources suggest the Jews were not intimidated, though there was some disagreement among rabbis about the usefulness of the revolts. It has been said that the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. One characteristic of the One Right Church is that a secondary issue becomes primary. The church begins to focus on something that isn't the main thing. Then, either peer pressure or a dominant leader enforces the importance of the secondary thing. The primary thing disappears when the secondary becomes too important. In this episode, we talk about a tragic turn that this took recently, when a family in the Followers of Christ failed to seek medical care for their infant. It is a sobering reminder to keep Jesus, not an auxiliary belief, central.

Welcome to the Daily Disciple Podcast. As daily disciples, we seek to adore and follow Jesus, our teacher, into the abundant life that he offers. Because we find Jesus irresistible, fascinating, and incredibly practical, we want to be students of his scripture. Today's episode is found in Luke 10 "The Main Thing"
TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Anxiety. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Peace. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). One may transfer oneself, and it takes practice, to the internal potency, and that's what we're doing. So, anyone can be trained in the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to attain this, it takes a lot of coaching, and you have to coach yourself. Everyone feels put upon by material nature, subjected to various miseries. Do you ever feel subjected to various miseries? Then change the subject, because the subject of our mind is how to fix everything in the material world. That's the subject. That's why there are shops everywhere. Every shop has tried to fix some problem, and it doesn't matter how many you go to, it won't work. But if you come to this shop and you practice every day meditating on the one object, the ultimate object of meditation, there's only one ultimate object—that's Bhagavān, and then it's Kṛṣṇa or Lord Caitanya, same. Stay there, and then, "How do I do that? My mind is fickle." Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and listen to the holy name. Everything, all potencies, are fully available in that. It has to be practiced every day carefully. Then when the result comes, there's a change of one's position in life. We go from the struggle of anartha-nivṛtti, which is, "How do I overcome this? Why am I being assaulted constantly by my senses?" to a place, niṣṭhā, where it's noticeable that the noise has gone down, and one feels that one has a standing in spiritual life. It's noticeable. One has a standing in spiritual life and isn't being pushed around by the unwanted desires. They're gone. And then from there comes ruci, which means that it becomes so enjoyable to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa that it's the main thing I want to do, not the last thing I want to do or not, "I have to do this," it's, "When can I do it?
