Segment 1: • Jon Mark Comer is popular with Gen Z, pushing a me-focused worldview. • True Christianity demands battling all sin, not selectively tolerating some. • Sin's deceitfulness exposes the emptiness of self-made systems. Segment 2: • Comer's message mirrors Rob Bell-style mysticism and expressive individualism. • Gen Z craves depth but is being fed me-centric spirituality. • Comer's eclectic mix of truth and error makes him appealing yet dangerous. Segment 3: • Christianity isn't about making you “happy.” • The Spirit-driven life is about who you are, not self-improvement tricks. • Are you depending on inventions—or on the Holy Spirit—for daily living? Segment 4: • You are a Christian in the day-to-day as much as in the “spiritual.” • Living the Christian life isn't about feelings-driven systems—it's obedience. • Neglecting your daily walk isn't harmless—it's sin. ___ Thanks for listening! Regardless of one's definition, hell is a place that no one would want to end up. There is nothing more horrifying or tormenting, than realizing you are slated for hell. In recent years, the idea of God sending people to hell where they suffer conscience pain and torment forever has been challenged. Rob Bell wrote his influential book, “Love Wins” where he questions whether a loving God would do this. This has highly impacted the Church and has given credibility to Christian Universalism, the idea that all human beings will ultimately be saved and brought into a right relationship with God. Its main teaching is through Jesus Christ, salvation will eventually be realized for everyone, not just for a chosen group or believers in this life. The question for us is, is this Scriptural? Join us as we start this new series on hell and the afterlife.

What if the thing you were always taught to fear… was actually the thing trying to lead you home? In this episode of Clemenz With a Z, I dive deep into the power of doubt not as a spiritual failure, but as a sacred invitation. I reflect on growing up in a faith system that demanded certainty, punished questions, and taught me that doubt was a sign of weakness. But over time, I've come to believe the opposite: that doubt isn't the enemy of faith. It's often the birthplace of something more honest, more human, and more mine. From the story of Thomas to insights from Richard Rohr, Rob Bell, and Peter Enns, this episode explores what happens when we stop fearing the unraveling, and start trusting what it might reveal. If you're deconstructing, doubting, or just exhausted from pretending, this one's for you. If this episode meant something to you, I'd love it if you'd take a second to like, subscribe, and leave a review, it really helps more people find the show. In this comforting and deeply personal devotional, Alexis A. Goring draws inspiration from a NOOMA teaching by Rob Bell to remind us that even when we feel forgotten or afraid, God is holding us close. Using Psalm 34:18 and a father’s love as the backdrop, she paints a powerful picture of how God shelters us—even when the thunder is loud and the way home feels far.
Original Air Date: January 10, 2018Time magazine named Pastor Rob Bell "one of the most influential Christian leaders in the country." Rob's progressive and unique interpretation of the Bible considers new ways of thinking about God, religion and faith. In his book "What We Talk About When We Talk About God," Rob explains why more people are identifying with spirituality over religion, and walks listeners through his three basic principles: "God is with us, God is for us, and God is ahead of us."
In this episode, I am joined by the podcast Producer, Josh Gilbert, for our second tutorial edition. This time, we tackle some heavy stuff - Josh opens up about his modern existential crisis of living untethered from traditional institutions, which gets us into William James' "Will to Believe" and the whole mess of making momentous decisions in a culture that's allergic to commitment. Then I get nerdy about Andreas Reckwitz's fascinating analysis of late modernity - how we've split into two warring tribes: the hyper-culture individualists seeking singular authenticity and the cultural essentialists clinging to collective identity. It's a compelling framework for understanding why we're all at each other's throats politically while the middle class gets squeezed into an hourglass shape. We also geek out over Byung-Chul Han's concept of positive violence, reminisce about U2 concerts with my son Elgin, and somehow end up discussing Rob Bell's uncanny resemblance to the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty. Oh, and we're planning a cigar expo "research retreat" in September because apparently that counts as legitimate podcast planning. What do we do with the weight of the past? We so often find ourselves clinging and grasping to that which has ended, getting stuck in self-loathing and judgement over that which we regret, or becoming too cautious and comfortable to step boldly beyond that which we have outgrown, leaving us struggling to live fully in the present moment and all that is emerging. In this episode, Rob Bell explores the many ways we get stuck looking in the rearview mirror and shares some liberating insights about how we can make peace with the past and create space for new life. Released in 2005, it combines personal anecdotes, biblical reflection, and cultural observations. Key themes include the importance of questioning beliefs, the significance of community, and the notion that faith should adapt to new insights and experiences. Bell emphasizes the transformative power of love and grace, urging Christians to engage authentically with their beliefs and the world around them. The book has sparked discussions and debates within Christian circles, highlighting its impact on contemporary faith discussions.Chapter 2 Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell Summary"Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith" by Rob Bell is a book that explores the nature of faith, spirituality, and the way religious concepts can be reshaped for contemporary understanding. Here's a summary of its key themes and ideas:Metaphor of the Velvet Elvis: The title refers to a velvet painting of Elvis Presley that Bell encountered. Just as a painting can be altered, so can our understanding of spiritual truths.Reimagination of Christian Faith: Bell encourages readers to move beyond rigid beliefs and embrace a more dynamic, questioning faith. He argues that faith should be a journey of discovery rather than a set of dogmas to adhere to.Emphasis on Love over Judgment: One of the central themes of the book is that love should be the foundation of Christian faith rather than judgment or exclusion. Bell emphasizes the inclusive nature of Jesus' message, advocating for acceptance and love towards all individuals.Reevaluation of Biblical Texts: Bell suggests that traditional interpretations of the Bible can be limiting and encourages readers to rethink their understanding of Scripture in light of historical context and personal experience.Community and Relationships: The book highlights the importance of community in faith. Bell believes that engaging with others in meaningful relationships is crucial for spiritual growth and understanding.Questioning Certainty: Bell challenges the need for certainty in faith, suggesting that doubt can lead to deeper understanding and exploration. He encourages embracing questions and uncertainties as a vital part of the spiritual journey. The Role of Experience: Personal experience and encounter with the divine are emphasized as integral aspects of faith. Bell advocates for a faith that is lived out in everyday life, rather than solely confined to doctrine. In summary, "Velvet Elvis" invites readers to rethink their approach to Christianity, advocating for a more open, loving, and inquiry-driven faith that evolves with the individual's experiences and insights.Chapter 3 Velvet Elvis AuthorRob Bell is an American author, speaker, and former pastor known for his innovative and often controversial approach to Christianity. In this episode, I had the joy of having Rob Bell back on the podcast to talk about the second book of his series, "Where'd you park your Spaceship" - called "There's Only One Noon Yeah". This time is our turn to get to know Noon Yeah, a character I didn't expect to fall in love with, but she stole my heart. We talked about his experience writing the book, how this process was different from the first one, the messy times we are living in, and how creation is the medicine we need most.Invitations:From Rob:
Have you listened to the FULL EPISODE yet?"Everything you are working and striving for, you already have. That so often we're working, sweating, clinging, grasping, striving to feel worthy enough. And the fundamental good news, what's called the gospel, is the announcement that you're loved exactly as you are." - Rob BellSpiritual teacher Rob Bell unveils a profound truth about the human struggle for worthiness, challenging our deeply ingrained beliefs about achievement and acceptance. Through his candid reflections, he reveals his own battle with the relentless inner voice that whispers "push, push, push," and "it's not enough," while sharing how he's learned to embrace the radical notion that we're already complete. Bell's journey demonstrates the transformative power of accepting our inherent worthiness, showing how this acceptance frees us to create and achieve from a place of wholeness rather than lack.In a remarkable convergence of spirituality and surfing, Bell shares how his daily encounters with the ocean have become a form of moving meditation, offering glimpses of the divine in unexpected places. From swimming with dolphins off Venice Beach to witnessing great white sharks at Sunset Point, these experiences embody the rare combination of terror and wonder that characterizes authentic spiritual awakening. His stories illustrate how finding joy isn't about achieving more, but about awakening to the wonder that already surrounds us – even in the midst of our everyday struggles and imperfections.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter!

“All dogma begins in mysticism,” says Rob Bell. But by the time programs, practices, and policies filter down to Church members, it's little wonder the criteria for determining what really matters in the long term—and why—can feel a bit fuzzy. In light of recent changes, in bonus Episode 199 Cynthia and Susan revisit their conversation from Episode 102, Did It Ever Matter? What's the point of all the trappings of our religious practice as Latter-day Saints? Why do some changes bring so much emotion? And who gets to determine what's important to us?
Original Air Date: May 26, 2021Oprah says, “I have always thought a mountain is a magnificent metaphor for life. From a distance, the ascent looks clear and smooth, but once you actually set out for the summit, you discover unexpected valleys and precarious ridges along the way. If your internal compass isn't set to keep climbing, every stumble will give you an excuse to turn back. Over the years, there have been many times when I've found myself climbing a steep, rocky road and there have been setbacks which threatened to overwhelm me or stop me in my tracks. But I've learned to keep going and to tell myself, ‘This too shall pass, and I will be better for it.' In this Super Soul podcast, Oprah sits down with such legendary spiritual teachers and thought leaders as: Eckhart Tolle, Stephen Colbert, President Joe Biden (VP at the time), Father Richard Rohr, Kristen and Rob Bell, Alanis Morissette, Cheryl Strayed, Paul Williams, Tracey Jackson, Glennon Doyle, Tracy McMillan, Cindy Crawford, Jon Bon Jovi and Joel Osteen. They discuss how they made their way up their own mountains, and what kept them going, no matter how steep the climb. A similar path is waiting for you. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from her Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday.
