Twin sisters Kehinde and Yeye Taiwo Lijadu performed as The Lijadu Sisters from the 1960s to the 1980s in Nigeria, but their influence is still felt globally today. Their hits include songs like "Come On Home" and "Life's Gone Down Low." The surviving sister of the duo, Yeye Taiwo Lijadu, joins A Deeper Listen to talk about being one of the only female groups making music in Nigeria in the late 1960s and into the 1970s, and how they addressed issues of government corruption in their music. She also shares how, despite being on a major label, she has never seen profits from her recordings, and how meaningful it is that Numero Group is now reissuing the entire Lijadu Sisters catalog.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
First coming to international attention after Brian Eno heard him playing in Washington Square Park in New York City in 1979, Laraaji’s calm, meditative, and deeply spiritual work was widely heard for the first time when his Ambient 3: Day of Radiance, record was released by Eno in 1980 as the third in his “Ambient” series. A collection of his early, previously unreleased work, Segue to Infinity, was released by Numero Group in October of 2023. Laraaji will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville in March of 2025, and in this episode talks about how songs by Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, Frank Sinatra, and Pharrell Williams were formative for him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode, I talk to musicians Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson of the band Tsunami. Tsunami formed in Arlington, VA in late 1990, when Jenny and Kristin were housemates at Arlington, Virginia's legendary punk-activist Positive Force house. Over the next seven years, Tsunami wrote and recorded prolifically, releasing three full-length albums (Deep End, The Heart's Tremolo and A Brilliant Mistake) and over a dozen seven-inch singles and EPs, most on their own Simple Machines label. And next week Numero Group will release Loud As Is, a 5-LP box set reissue of their entire catalog, and buddy, you better believe it's great! When the highly respected label The Numero Group approached Brandon Butler, the voice and heart of KC heart throbs Boy's Life, about doing a retrospective of his influential band, his initial thought might've been there's not enough material to reissue, considering they only released 2 full lenths in their short tenure. What he hadn't considered was they were purchasing their entire catalog of 7" recordings and split collabs with bands like Christie Front Drive and Vitreous Humor, turning their rerelease into a 4 LP celebration of this foundational band from Kansas City MO. His career is one of a troubador and seeker always pushing and growing. His evolution over the years of his different bands from The Farewell Bend, to Canyon and on to Six Bells and through a prolific solo career that has seen him blossom from indie rocker to thoughtful and knowledgable musician with command over not only his lyrical narrative but also his voice and the machinations of theory, allowing him to make the music he hears in his head. He's a dedicated father, husband, a talented luthier and a hardass worker with a growing remodeling business in his adopted town of Louisville KY. With the reissues and a few Boy's Life shows in the near future, Brandon's at the top of his game indeed.

Formed in a city best known for either Motown Soul or Garage Rock, shoegazers Majesty Crush were an anomaly in the early ‘90s Detroit music scene. Inspired by the music coming out of the UK, Majesty Crush's sound employed swirling guitars, hazy vocals, and captivating dreaminess while incorporating elements of soul and R&B. After their song “No. 1 Fan” received significant airplay during prime hours on the Windsor radio station 89X, Majesty Crush - David Stroughter (vocals), Mike Segal (guitars), Hobey Echlin (bass) and Odell Nails (drums) - signed with Dali Records, a subsidiary of Warner/Elektra and released their debut full-length, Love 15, in 1993. However, just a month after the album came out, Dali Records folded bringing Majesty Crush's momentum to a halt and, ultimately, to an end just a few years later. Though their time was short, the band amassed a small but loyal following in the shoegaze scene of the early ‘90s and have been cited as an influence for everything from indie guitar groups to metal bands. And curators of this style of music have sought out Majesty Crush's music to include on compilations like Third Man Records' Southeast of Saturn which features 19 tracks from Detroit shoegaze and dream pop artists. In March 2024, Numero Group released Butterflies Don't Go Away, a 2 LP set featuring the Love 15 album as well as singles, EPs, and rarities, all remastered from the original tapes. The package is completed by a 24-page booklet. Majesty Crush bassist Hobey Echlin joins us on this episode for a deep dive into not only his band's career but the ‘90s independent music world. As a music journalist, Echlin has amassed a number of stories over the years and this conversation - at times - goes to places you'd never expect. I love cover songs. On last week's mixtape I did all Joy Division - New Order Covers to celebrate the release of the double A 7” release from Numero Group featuring Bedhead and Codeine delivering personal favorite Joy Division covers. You can check it out at the Face Radio Archives page, or at my MattPapeWorldy Mixcloud page. Covers are so much fun, discovering favorite songs reimagined, or favorite artists taking on other people's work, whether it be faithful renditions or complete shifts. So I'm thrilled to start a new series in the Matt Pape Mixtape collection - Pull The Covers Off The Lovers. For the first edition of this I'm featuring the exclusive broadcast of Hudson Palace's Tattoo - a cover of the Who song. You heard it first folks!Hudson Palace started out as a Covid dating survival tactic: date nights between Tony Fletcher and Paula Lucas, a new couple with nowhere to go. Figuring that one of them could play guitar and the other could sing, they started working their way through the many songbooks they owned and beyond, seeking uncommon musical ground. When Tony found himself rewriting Buzzcocks' power pop punk classic "Love You More" as an acoustic ballad in 3/4, a project was properly born, the arrangement was recorded, released in early 2023, and followed by a second acoustic Buzzcocks cover, "Love Is Lies."Now, a year down the line, Paula and Tony are about to unveil another themed pair of cover versions, these of mid-60s Who songs. The Who Sell Out's "Tattoo" from 1967 comes first, on Feb 29, followed around a month later by the previous year's 45 "I'm A Boy." The songs sit together thematically in that they deal with the gender confusion Pete Townshend articulated with such wit during this period - wit that takes on new meaning when sung by a woman. Both Hudson Palace interpretations have a somewhat "baroque" feeling to them, and though there are still no drums, they each have considerably more parts than the Buzzcocks covers. All instruments by Tony, recorded in Kingston, NY, and mixed by Noel Fletcher.Oh yeah, also featuring Nico, Badly Drawn Boy, Angel Olsen, Galaxie 500, The Jam, Billy Bragg, Cat Power and loads more. Enjoy. Tune into new broadcasts of Matt Pape Mixtape, Friday from 12 - 1 AM EST / 5 - 6 AM GMTFor more info visit: https://thefaceradio.com/matt-pape-mixtape///Dig this show? Numero Group has released a double A sided 7” featuring Joy Division covers by Bedhead and Codeine. The first Joy Division cover I ever heard was probably by Paul Young. The second probably by Grace Jones. I didn't like either, and actually hated the whole idea of a Joy Division cover with as much intensity as I loved the originals. There was nothing like Ian Curtis, there was nothing like the real thing, so why even try. Over time I heard covers done by Midwest American bands - a slow core - tempered approach to the anguish, and I started paying more attention. While not the real thing, Bedhead- Disorder & Codeine - Atmosphere - capture the spirit, like they have walked on fire and can't feel it anymore.Without seeking anyone's approval, if you are a fan of Joy Division, I hope you enjoy it. Features - Galaxie 500, Bedhead, Codeine, Low, Thurston Moore and more. Today on the podcast, we welcome Tim Semple, drummer from Boilermaker. Boilermaker was a band from the San Diego area and was on a few labels, including our friends Better Looking Records, who had a CD compilation called Leucadia that has been taking on a life of its own over the years. As the constant feeding frenzy for what's not streaming, Boilermaker had a few things not up as they say, and Numero Group stepped in to help get them in the ears of those searching. One person in Boilermaker hasn't been able to see this rebirth. Terrin Durfey, who played bass and sang in Boilermaker, passed away from cancer in 2008. Tim speaks about hearing Terrin live and the weird crew of people they connected with within their short time together as a band. A must listen. Learn more about your ad choices. The bouffant and the beehive…hairstyles with a tease and some backcombing, were all the rage in the sixties. Like pop music, it had a short life before the British wave. Unlike pop music, whose sound endured, the fashion was washed away at the salon in favor of the next big thing. Girl groups set the tone for the harmonious sounds of the time, and our nostalgia cruise will be tooling the AM radio sounds of the very best of the beehive and flip hairstyles of groups like The Shangri-Las, The Paris Sisters, The Angels, Lesley Gore and a couple dozen others in this week's show. Join Dave for the hits, the misses, and the near misses along with some of the unheard in this week's episode of Deeper Roots. He'll also share a number of tracks from an excellent 2018 release from Chicago's Numero Group featuring some of ‘the others'. Girl groups emerged as a dominant force in the music industry, characterized by harmonious vocals, catchy melodies, and often choreographed performances.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Andrew Kenny. Originally from Fort Worth, Kenny formed The American Analog Set in 1995 and over the next decade, released six albums on labels like Emperor Jones, Tiger Style and Arts & Crafts, after which the band went on hiatus. In 2009, Kenny released the first of two albums as The Wooden Birds, but since 2011's Two Matchsticks, he has been rather quiet. That is, until this last year. In 2023, The American Analog Set released their first album in almost two decades For Forever, and most recently, Numero Group released New Drifters, a comprehensive box set of the band's first three albums, and folks, it is worth your time! Join hosts Tom Davies and Secretly Group's Director of A&R, Ophir Admony in a return to chat with Numero Group's record label founders Ken Shipley and Rob Sevier about the exploration into the reissues of the 80's and 90's Post Hardcore, Emo, and Punk records. Start with Ken and Rob's idea to use their formula of record reissues to move away from their previous unilateral focus of Disco, Soul, and Gospel of the 60s and 70s as they found trust among artist scenes that left them inspired in their youth. Stay through stories about the decades-long chase of working with records they believed a new generation of fans was ready to discover. The episode explores the label owner's experiences unraveling the sonic singularities of groups such as Duster, Unwound, Everyone Asked About You, Karate, Rex, Tsunami, Bedhead, Codeine, 90 Day Men, The Hated and Chisel. Welcome to Spinning Out -- We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Henry Owings of Chunklet. We talked about Pylon's 1983 album CHOMP. We also talk about the true spirit of DIY & the art of music vs. music as commerce. Henry recently released two books, Plus One Athens and Plus One Atlanta, which chronicles show flyers and stories from both scenes over a 50 year period. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in the history of music in the southeast. https://www.chunklet.com/product-category/books/ Henry has been releasing zines and albums under the name Chunklet since 1993 and has also worked as a graphic designer for Numero Group, Light in the Attic, and so many others. He's a tireless archivist and someone who truly cares about preserving the history of music in the southeast. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a musician at the start of her career talking with a songwriter whose 35-year-old song she recently covered—after just discovering it. It's Dan Littleton and Helen Ballentine, aka. Skullcrusher. Don't let that name fool you. Skullcrusher's music taps into elements of ambient electronic and traditional folk to create a mesmerizing stew: In other words, if it crushes your skull, it will do so gently. On her debut album under the name, last year's Quiet the Room, Ballentine deftly explores some complicated emotions via gorgeous songs and words; the two artists she's been most frequently compared to are Phoebe Bridgers and Grouper, and I think if you smush those together, it makes some sense. The other half of today's conversation is Dan Littleton, whose indie-folk outfit Ida made some incredible records in the ‘90s and the aughts. But the focus of this conversation is actually Littleton's hardcore band from the 1980s, the Hated. The Hated was part of what emo scholars—does such a thing exist?—consider the genre's first wave, which was led most notably by Rites of Spring. They were adjacent to the so-called “Revolution Summer” in 1985, though the Hated faded into history more quickly than some of their counterparts. But the scholars at the venerated Numero Group label recently launched a reissue series that takes a deep dive into the Hated's discography, starting with a compilation called Best Piece of Shit Vol. 4. Now what does an ‘80s hardcore band have to do with an ambient folk artist currently bubbling? Well, the Numero folks had the brilliant idea of asking Skullcrusher to cover a Hated song, and once she heard “Words Come Back,” she was all in. Check out the original below; the cover is available on your favorite streaming service starting today. In this conversation, Ballentine and Littleton—who are chatting for the first time—talk about how this unusual cover version actually makes complete sense, and how sometimes radically different sounds can actually come from very similar places. Dan describes the emotional teenage years that inspired the original, and Helen talks about how she layered the unusual sounds on her version. It's an inspiring lovefest of sincerity and creativity, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Helen Ballentine and Dan Littleton for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all we've got to offer on Talkhouse.com. Japanese rock. Ohio soul. UK rave. Country noir. Those are just a few of the many playlists curated by the folks at Numero Group, a Chicago record label that focuses on curating collections of archival music. Reset checks in with Numero Group co-founders Rob Sevier and Ken Shipley about giving new life to records from the past that have been neglected, overlooked or not widely distributed.
Today on the podcast we welcome Daniel Littleton from The Hated. Daniel has a whole other band called Ida and that's a whole separate episode. Today, we just stick to The Hated, which has had their catalog meticulously handled by our friends at Numero Group and recently played some reunion shows. The Hated were an early emo band. Daniel goes to great lengths to explain his fascination and frustration with the word but in the end he weaves a tale that talks about his upbringing in a biracial family that shaped his life and also seeing bands like Bad Brains or women in music helped guide where he is today. A true legend and I invite you to sit back and listen, which I do for most of this, on a time and place before the word was even uttered. This one is an absolute trip to listen back to and I hope you enjoy.
Today on the podcast we welcome Ken Shipley from Numero Group and Tree Records. Many may know Numero Group for their fantastic reissues and they have a show coming up this weekend in LA celebrating 20 years called Numero 20. A very special show with bands we've featured on the podcast the last few weeks and more to come. What we're going to touch on more for this episode is how he got to Numero and his first experiences figuring out the world of record making under the name Tree Records. A fantastic run of releases highlighted by a series called Post Marked Stamps that put many bands we love in the emo genre on the map. A true honor to spend an hour with a person that I look up to professionally.
Today we welcome Ted Leo from Chisel. You may know Ted Leo or Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Or you're wondering what Ted is doing on the podcast. We're deep in our Numero Group 20 Celebration and if you heard the last episode with John Dugan of Chisel, Ted has a great history in hardcore in the NYC area going to shows at ABC No Rio among others and we talk about those days, his thoughts on emo from DC, the early 2000s scene and how special this upcoming "Set You Free" reissue and shows with Numero Group means to him. Ted was an absolute blast to chat with and you'll wonder where the time went as he weaves stories and moments together that at one point says he's never said in any other interview. A true honor to have a DIY legend on the podcast and couldn't have been happier to have it line up with Numero Group's reissue of “Set You Free” and their upcoming shows.
Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they're about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn't realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John's younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I've spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I'd see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. We even talk Fall Out Boy and the renewed interest in Chisel.
Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you're not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas.Chris and I talk a lot about where he's from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they're playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss.I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in the day. Girl and guy vocals, super dissonant and great peaks and valleys. Heaven.
Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Go search it out.Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven't had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on emo, his band, and music and philosophy. My favorite part is when Erik talks about seeing Rites of Spring for the first time. Holy shit, fucking epic. I can't wait for you to listen.

Adam Luksetich is a musician, DJ and resident "metal head" at The Numero Group. He is also the producer of Bound For Hell-On The Sunset Strip, a multi-medium release that explores and celebrates the lesser known bands of the early 80's Los Angeles glam rock scene, just before the ultra popular Poisons and Motley Crue's of the same era. In this episode, Adam shares what he gleaned from his extensive research, why some of these bands went unnoticed and the difference between "glam" metal and "hair" metal. Joe and Adam speculate on the demise of the genre, the influence behind it and why women were underrepresented. We get a some insight on the process of making this extensive box set and hear a couple tunes. https://numerogroup.com/Use coupon code FRET10 to claim 10% off your iZotope plug-in purchase or try Music Production Suite Pro free for 30 days.Go to www.izotope.com/en/lp/ruinous @thetourstories

Three iconic sixties artists adapt to a changing musical landscape by releasing divisive albums which left fans scratching their heads. On today's Fretboard Journal Podcast, we talk to Geoff Farina of the band Karate. In the mid-'90s, the Boston-based group earned a cult following with their indie rock-meets-jazz sound. Geoff recounts the band's early days, when he was working part-time for Bill Finnegan assembling Klon Centaurs. He talks about life on the road, the group's breakup, and how they eventually were able to reissue their out-of-print albums on the Numero Group. Most importantly, Geoff is just a rabid guitar nut: He's currently a music educator in Chicago, where he spends his free time buying and selling guitars (acoustic and electric) and building tube amplifiers. July 2022: Karate is currently reunited and back on the road. Follow their tour dates here: https://karateallston.bandcamp.com To order the Numero Group's Karate reissues, click here. WASTOIDS With is back with Trevor Shelley de Brauw, guitarist of Chicago art metal band Pelican, Chord, and RLYR, who just released a new self-titled record on Gilead Media, and it blends thrash elements with shoegaze textures, drones, and a sense of triumphant melodicism. When de Brauw isn't playing music, he serves as the “emo ambassador” to Chicago's Numero Group label and works with the publicity firm Biz 3. He joined us to discuss it all–the new RLYR, the music of prog rockers Yes, the origins of “post rock,” and Pelican's new partnership with Thrill Jockey, which will reissue the band's first three albums, 2005's The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw, 2003's Australasia and 2007's City of Echoes. He's written, recorded and toured with a multitude of bands and projects over the last two decades, with his main efforts focussed on E and Karate. In this episode Gavin catches us up on his life during the involuntary break, gives us the low down on the Boston venue scene and tells us how taking a break from music changed his self-identity. He also gives us his thoughts on reunion tours, why he's looking forward to this summers Karate dates and why the concept of a live record is odd.
