A monthly roundup of films and events coming soon to the historic Metro Cinema in Edmonton, Alberta. As well as an overall look at the calendar for April with some of our regular contributors - Owen Armstrong, Heather Noel, Talicia Dutchin - this episode also features interviews with Panorama: Latin American Cinema curator Andrea Barragán, and Sally Poulsen, who brings Seeing The Unseen in acknowledgment of World Autism Day. NOTE: Due to developments regarding COVID-19 following the recording of this episode, we understand that many of the films discussed, if not all, will not be screened in the month of April. Instead, we urge our listeners to find these films and watch them in the midst of our current social isolation, if at all possible. Many streaming services can be accessed with a free 14-day trial, including criterionchannel.com, which is currently streaming both Safe, and Come and See, and First Reformed can also be found on Crave. Otherwise, we hope that we are at least able to provide informative discussion and opinion in light of circumstances beyond our control. Throughout the episode, you'll also hear music from local artists Mark Templeton, Soft Ions, excerpts from Leonard J. Paul's excellent procedural film score to Beep - A Documentary History Of Game Sound, and also Brighton's Mighty Lord Deathman. The second half of our chat with Jeff Samsonow is all about his indie media production adventures. We learn about the company started by he and Sally Poulsen, The Edmontonian Media Co. Some of the things discussed: Comedy that punches up, other talented Edmontonians, and advertising in this digital age. Where did our guest go after AMI? Jeff shares his adventures with Postmedia and Capital Ideas. He also mentions gastropost. Karen Unland and Brittney Le Blanc started Capital Ideas according to our guest. Jeff also adds how he got to know them through McEwan and 630 CHED. Karen runs Seen and Heard in Edmonton, the Edmonton podcast meetups and is trying to start a podcast network. The Edmontonian Media Co. was born from the work Jeff & Sally Poulsen put into The Edmontonian. Their first production was called, wait for it, Sick Day. The first short was inspired by the cold opens they did on the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV. Jeff tells us about Startups, another short they made featuring Karen Unland, Owen Brierley of EDAC and former guest Marty Chan. The Edmontonian Media Co. also produced Obstacles. Jeff worked with Christian Zyp during Startups. The most recent production from Sally & Jeff was the amazing Underdogs of Comedy. They were inspired by The Meltdown. Simon Gorsak and Brett McCrindle often host the Underdog Comedy Show. Dion Arnold started the show, originally. More comedians in the area mentioned: Clare Belford, Carina Morton & Simon Glassman. Speaking of places to find comedy in Edmonton, try The Underdog, The Empress Ale House and El Cortez. Keep your fingers crossed, Jeff & Sally have submitted The Underdogs of Comedy to AMPIA’s web series award category. Jeff’s newest venture is Edmonton Quotient, telling the stories of Edmonton in an online magazine. Chris always makes it weird and tells a story of companies reaching out to advertise in porn. Chris also makes a pitch for Someday in February. Learn more about podcasting in Edmonton at seenandheardyeg.com. Thanks so much for listening. Really grateful that Jeff Samsonow took time to drop in at Chris’ place to do the podcast. Be sure to check out Edmonton Quotient and The Underdogs of Comedy. Questions, comments? This episode is an interview with the talented Jeff Samsonow, who wears a number of hats. He’s been a journalist, producer, writer, product strategist, content director and more. Thus, we gave him the title, Media Mogul. Jeff shares his stories about his radio days, the importance of Universal design and rock shows in basement scooter shops. We also learn about Jeff’s latest journalistic adventure and comedy productions. Treat yourself to some Sugru. Get yours from your not so local Amazon site. Jeff is a graduate of Fanshawe and did not attend Community. Chris & Paul learn the difference between universities and colleges in Canada with many examples: Western, Ryerson, MacEwan, NAIT, Edmonton Digital Arts College. Jeff spent several years with Corus at 630 CHED, AM 640 and CJOB. If you’re interested in the Edmonton podcast meetup Chris referenced, check out Meetup.com. Jeff’s very talented partner and spouse is Sally Poulsen. AMI is an amazing organization that produces content for the blind, deaf and Canadians with mobility issues. Paul mentions that one organization in Grand Rapids that also work in the accessible area is the UICA. Universal design is about creating inclusive things, yo. Jeff tells us about Blind Sighted with Kelly MacDonald, an AMI show in Toronto. Jeff & Sally started The Edmontonian back in 2009. Jeff adds that Sally did time as a journalist prior to their site for the Portage Daily Graphic in Manitoba. The two eventually started The Edmonton Media Co.. Chris discusses the SNL sketch about Michigan accents. He managed to track it down and you can watch it at the bottom of this article. You can watch the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV here. We didn’t always save everything. Hosts of the USA Up All Night show said they used to tape over the old shows to save money. The Maltin on Movies podcast with Gilbert Gottfried does not feature the discussion of lost episodes, it’s Gilbert’s podcast with Rhonda Shear. Thanks for listening, you’ve just earned 32,018 MSauce points with which you can use to purchase our collection of sound effects for film editing called Mouth Foley 2: Atrocious Boogaloo. A very special thanks to Jeff Samsonow for coming to a stranger’s home to be recorded in front of a live internet audience. This week’s podcast features the audio from our meetup with Jeff Samsonow of the edmontonian media co. on the subject of how to ask good questions. Jeff first started asking questions in a professional capacity when he got into journalism in high school, which put him on a path that led him to radio and then Accessible Media. Along the way, he and his partner Sally Poulsen founded the edmontonian, a blog that gave many other bloggers and podcasters their start. Jeff now runs Capital Ideas in Edmonton and Calgary. You can hear his past interviews with local business owners about what they’ve learned along the way on the Capital Ideas Edmonton podcast. And be sure to check out Jeff and Sally’s latest production, The Underdogs of Comedy. The next meetup will take place at Variant Edition on June 19 at 1 pm. We’ll be talking about how to get good sound. Sign up here, and watch for details in the coming days. As you’ll hear in the podcast, I’m making some schedule changes to give myself more time to work on the podcast networkand Taproot Edmonton. The blog roundups and podcast roundups will now come out every two weeks, and starting next week, the podcast will come out every two weeks, too. The newsletter will likely follow the same schedule, though I will send an extra if I’ve got something important to tell you.

Episode the Eleventh: On hyperlocal websites and how they fit into local media

The Unknown Studio

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 9, 2009

Since June 2009, Edmonton has had the benefit of a great local resource to information on just about anything you can think of — from festivals to concerts to art shows to political issues and discussions, TheEdmontonian.com launched with a mind to try and bring topics of interest to citizens in a conversational, interesting way. Jeff Samsonow and Sally Poulsen are the website's creators. They're the kind of people who, when you meet them for the first time, you'll probably think to yourself that you'd really like to be friends with them, and that the best way to do that is to have them over for dinner, and oh I wonder if they'd like a course involving butternut squash. Both Jeff and Sally are hyper-intelligent individuals with media backgrounds who decided to try and enrich the place they've chosen to live. They both also have killer senses of humour. That's where TheEdmontonian.com comes in. Scott and I sat down with Jeff and Sally to talk about why they started the website, some of the challenges they've had to deal with since its inception (hilariously enough, it launch in the same month as the Unknown Studio. So, we're like internet brethren), and where they hope the website goes. We had a blast talking with Jeff and Sally, and I'm hoping they'll come to subsequent recordings of the show, since Scott and I are always looking for great conversation, and more content for our blooper reel. Other things we learned about Jeff and Sally: Jeff must screen movies for Sally before she watches them in case they're too scary or upsetting; they met in Winnipeg, though neither one of them is from there; they both have razor-sharp wits.
