Feel the freedom of an organized house when you give in to the 'urge to purge'. It's even more fun than buying something new. Take a listen and see what we mean. Firstly, please find someone to give your discards to. If you have old towels or blankets, check with your local humane society to see if they will take them. Secondly try to do a declutter at least once a year. If you don't the job will become too overwhelming and you won't even want to start it. Put like things together, that way you'll be able to find things and know where everything is. Now you will be less likely to accidentally buy something you already have. In this episode, we're talking to Daniel Charny, a creative director, curator and educator with an inquiring mind and an entrepreneurial streak. Alongside Dee Halligan, he is co-founder and director of From Now On, where he works with clients from Google to the Design Museum. Describing themselves as ‘part R&D Lab and part consultancy, small, connected and serious about finding better responses to our changing world,' their most recent initiative is the creative education think-and-do-tank FixEd.Daniel is also Professor of Design at Kingston University and guest lecturer on the Master in Design for Emergent Futures at IAAC, Barcelona. We discuss:- The mindset around fixing and the impact it has. - The importance of ‘applied creativity' in education. - Why young and older makers need to come together to create change. - The differences between formal, informal and non-formal education and why all three are important. - His time spent working with Zeev Aram and The Aram Gallery- Fixperts, an award-winning learning programme for applied creativity and social sustainability.… and more! Here are some highlights. The connection between making and mending“I think they are completely connected, but there are different values sometimes behind them and different reasons for doing them. Menders have material intelligence, they have acquired skills. Making is, I think, completely integral to mending. I don't think it works the other way around. I think a lot of makers can mend, but it's not necessarily their driver. There are lots of tribes of makers, and some of them are interested in innovation. And so improving is more of their state of making. And yes, they are mending something, but not in order to mend it back to what it was. We then just think about it as a kind of access of care, and you think about conservation, you think about maintenance, you think about care in daily life and repair, and then hacking and then adapting and so on.”Waking people up to remember that we have making“It was kind of like, ‘Okay, let's open that cupboard and remember we have it.' We don't have to invent it, it's there, we just kind of forgot about it. Too many people forget about it. And Fixperts, Maker Library Network, they really are taking that notion with a social agenda together. So there was an area in ‘The Power of Making' that was very much about communities making together, so it wasn't so much DIY culture, it was ‘MIY' culture, and it was very much the early 3D printers. […] Or materials like Sugru are about fixing but also inventing and maybe doing repair for someone else, and there was this whole notion of the social of communities doing things for themselves and for others.”The importance of engaging with young people to create change“When you think about the challenges we're facing with the environment, it's not just about coming up with how to clean in the ocean or how to reduce carbon footprints, you need a major cultural shift to support young people to even learn to think like that. We have to engage much earlier with younger people at the stage when they are thinking about what their values are, how they understand themselves and creativity. It becomes a different kind of premise for me than teaching design. It's not just the sense and the mindset, it's actually enabling. The idea is not enough, they also have to have the skills. It's the imagination and the skills together in order to achieve these shifts.”The book Katie mentions towards the end of the episode, from which she has taken the term ‘stubborn optimism' is The Future We Choose by Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, which you can buy here. In this episode, we are in conversation with designer and technologist Jude Pullen. Winner of the 2020 Alastair Graham-Bryce "Imagineering" Award (Institution of Mechanical Engineers), Jude is a Product Design Engineer with an unparalleled appetite to investigate each subject matter that crosses his path. With a passion for bridging seemingly disparate disciplines, he is fascinated by fresh design challenges, be they human, mechanical or virtual. Exceptionally skilled at creating physical prototypes, he uses these models to explore design ideas, be they concepts for Dyson, a medical device for NHS, a fire-fighting robot or a mini space-pod. Jude has worked with Speck Design, Dyson, Sugru and LEGO but is possibly best known to design and technology teachers for his appearance as part of the design team on the BBCs Big Life Fix which has become something of an iconic show for design and technology teachers nationally (currently being repeated). Jude recently delivered a keynote as part of the Design and Technology Association's Autumn School. In the conversations leading to this keynote entitled "Not a Ted Talk", he was keen to avoid the 'easy option' of delivering a speech detailing his rich career to date. He was instead eager to explore the nature of design and technology teaching and what the future might hold for the subject. Teachers attending the Autumn School session were challenged to step forward to help form a group raising a hand to explore what might be possible in school with the support of Jude and some of his professional network of colleagues. That invitation is extended to D&T teachers listening to this podcast. This episode has something for teachers, students of D&T and for parents alike. So sit back, plug in and enjoy the D&T Association in conversation with Jude Pullen.

Important Events 1501 Today is the birthday of the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs. Leonard and his wife had ten children. The genus Fuchsia is named after Fuchs. Leonhart published the first drawing of a corn plant. He also drew one of the first illustrations of the pumpkin plant. It took Leonard 31 years to write his herbal masterpiece called Historia Stirpium. In the book, he describes 497 plants and 500 illustrations. In 1542, the book was published, and the medicinal uses for each plant were included in the descriptions. His goal was to make the knowledge of herbs accessible to the people. The fact that his book contained so many illustrations definitely helped him achieve his goal. Leonard’s book described over a hundred plants that had never been written about - like Pumpkins, Chili Peppers, Corn, and Squash. Leonard's Historia Stirpium is regarded as one of the most historically valuable and significant books of all time. Now, I wanted to share that the cover of the book - which is beautiful - was a bit of a mystery to me. It shows a tree with a coffin in its branches. It turns out it was a printer mark of the printer, Michael Isingrin, who was the printer of Historia Stirpium. The image of the coffin in a tree forms a Christian cross, and the tree holding the coffin was a holly tree. The inscription "Palma Ising" (i.e., by the hand of Isingrin) is the mark that identifies Michael Isingrin, the printer. " The depiction of a holly tree (Ilex spp. ) was deliberate. Holly is a symbol of eternal life. So essentially, the image represents life and death - the coffin in the tree. Incidentally, the holly tree is regarded as the evergreen twin of the oak. 1560 Today is the 460th birthday of the Swiss botanist Gaspard Bauhin. Gaspard spent his life classifying plants, and he ordered plants in a way that's familiar to us today - using binomial names, one name for the genus, and one name for the species. Gaspard was also the first to document a vegetable he named the napobrassica, the vegetable we know today as the rutabaga. Gaspard’s name for the rutabaga was prophetic because DNA testing has proven that the rutabaga is the result of a turnip crossing with a cabbage. Gaspard mentioned in his work that the rutabaga was grown in the northern fields of Bohemia, where the people simply called it “root.” Can you survive on rutabaga’s or Swedish turnips, as they are sometimes called? Yes. Yes, you can. Rutabagas can grow to be as big or bigger than a bowling ball. Almost a year ago, Helen Rosner wrote an article called, “What Rutabaga Does Better Than Anything Else.” It turns out; the rutagaba is perfect for making neutral-tasting, nicely-textured vegetable noodles. Use turnips and the noodles are too spicy. Use zucchini, and the noodles are meh. Use carrots, the noodles are too sweet. But, rutabaga noodles are just right. Rosner’s favorite restaurant in Brooklyn makes rutabaga noodles using a Japanese slicer resulting in perfect paper ribbons of rutabaga. If you look at the finished dish, you’d never know they weren’t real pasta. Gaspard wrote, “Pinax Theatri Botanici” (“An Illustrated Exposition of Plants”). In his book, he described thousands of plants, and he classified them using binomial nomenclature. Naturally, his work is considered a forerunner to that of Carl Linnaeus. 1705 Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist and theologian John Ray. Ray is regarded as the most distinguished British naturalist of the seventeenth century and “The Father of English Botany.” Ray was born to a blacksmith, and his mother was an herbalist. He was ordained as a minister but then turned his attention to zoology and botany after the King of England ordered the clergy to condemn their covenant with the church. In 1650, twenty-five years before the first maps of Europe were written for the masses; Ray went on a quest. He traveled around Europe for three years - with two friends - and he observed flora and fauna. Ray coined the botanical terms ‘petal’ and ‘pollen.’ His book, Historia Plantarum, was the first textbook of modern botany. The naturalist Gilbert White wrote, ”Our countryman, the excellent Mr. Ray, is the only describer [of plants and animals] who conveys some precise idea in every term or word, maintaining his superiority over his followers and imitators.” The sculptor, Faith Winter, created a distinguished-looking statue of John Ray. It was unveiled by the botanist David Bellamy on October 11, 1986. 1890 Today is the anniversary of the death of the Scottish-American plantsman Peter Henderson. Known as “The Father of America Horticulture,” he published "Gardening for Profit" in 1866, followed by "Gardening for Pleasure." "Gardening for Profit" was the first to book ever written about market gardening in the United States. When Peter arrived in the US, he worked for a time for the nurserymen George Thorburn and Robert Buist. After years of refining his growing systems and practices, he established his seed company on his 49th birthday. Peter ran the company - alongside his two sons, Alfred and Charles. In Peter’s biography written by his son, Alfred, it said: “His long experience as a market gardener probably made him realize more than most seedsmen, the necessity of testing seeds before offering them for sale, but whatever the cause, the fact remains, that he was the first in this country to initiate the true and natural way of proving the vitality of seeds—that is, by sowing them in the soil, the seedman's usual plan being to germinate them in moist cotton or flannel—nearly always a misleading method.” Peter lived nearly his whole life in Jersey City. He began of friendship with Andrew Carnegie after reading his book called Triumphant Democracy. He also became friends with the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher; they shared a giddy love for flowers. Mr. William R. Smith, the superintendent of the Botanic Gardens at Washington, paid Peter the highest possible tribute in calling him "The Great Horticultural Missionary." Unearthed Words Here are some poems that use a sleeping metaphor to describe the Landscape in Winter. The hiss was now becoming a roar - the whole world was a vast moving screen of snow - but even now it said peace, it said remoteness, it said cold, it said sleep. — Conrad Aiken, American Writer I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” — Lewis Carroll, English Writer The cold earth slept below; Above the cold sky shone; And all around, With a chilling sound, From caves of ice and fields of snow The breath of night like death did flow Beneath the sinking moon. — The moon made thy lips pale, beloved; The wind made thy bosom chill; The night did shed On thy dear head Its frozen dew, and thou didst lie Where the bitter breath of the naked sky Might visit thee at will. — Percy Bysshe Shelley, English Romantic Poet, The cold earth slept below When against earth a wooden heel Clicks as loud as stone on steel, When stone turns flour instead of flakes, And frost bakes clay as fire bakes, When the hard-bitten fields at last Crack like iron flawed in the cast, When the world is wicked and cross and old, I long to be quit of the cruel cold. Little birds like bubbles of glass Fly to other Americas, Birds as bright as sparkles of wine Fly in the nite to the Argentine, Birds of azure and flame-birds go To the tropical Gulf of Mexico: They chase the sun; they follow the heat, It is sweet in their bones, O sweet, sweet, sweet! It's not with them that I'd love to be, But under the roots of the balsam tree. Just as the spiniest chestnut-burr Is lined within with the finest fur, So the stoney-walled, snow-roofed house Of every squirrel and mole and mouse Is lined with thistledown, sea-gull's feather, Velvet mullein-leaf heaped together With balsam and juniper, dry and curled, Sweeter than anything else in the world. O what a warm and darksome nest Where the wildest things are hidden to rest! It's there that I'd love to lie and sleep, Soft, soft, soft, and deep, deep, deep! — Elinor Wylie, American Poet, Winter Sleep Grow That Garden Library The Herb Lover's Spa Book by Sue Goetz This book came out in 2015, and the subtitle to this book is: Create a Luxury Spa Experience at Home with Fragrant Herbs from Your Garden. Adrian Higgins wrote about David’s founding of Hortus in the Washington Post eight years ago saying: “A curious throwback to the analog age landed in my mailbox the other day: Hortus, a journal of garden writing. Almost everything about the quarterly periodical is wonderfully old-fashioned: It produces tactile and aesthetic pleasures once taken for granted ... Flop in a soft chair, thumb the pages and ponder that Hortus doesn’t exist in some electronic ether ... David Wheeler started Hortus 31 years ago, and he has a motto that Hortus “is for gardeners who read and readers who garden.” Thirty-one years later, the subscription list continues to stay modest. Subscriptions are about $75 a year, which includes airmail postage. Wheeler also writes for newspapers and other periodicals to supplement his income. He tells his friends that Hortus “pays for the tonic, but not the gin.” FYI: I just bought a subscription myself — Merry Christmas to me.
Zengineering: A Philosophy of Science, Technology, Art & Engineering
Hi, Zengineers! That's right! It's time to learn about stuff. You know, those everyday things that we all interact with but we don't always take time to think too much about. This week, that stuff, is headphones! These crazy things are everywhere these days (mostly because we all carry a portable music player at all times). Just 25 years ago, you were probably still a bit of an audiophile if you were rocking headphones on the reg. These days, you'd be the weirdo if you weren't. This episode is an interview with the talented Jeff Samsonow, who wears a number of hats. He’s been a journalist, producer, writer, product strategist, content director and more. Thus, we gave him the title, Media Mogul. Jeff shares his stories about his radio days, the importance of Universal design and rock shows in basement scooter shops. We also learn about Jeff’s latest journalistic adventure and comedy productions. Treat yourself to some Sugru. Get yours from your not so local Amazon site. Jeff is a graduate of Fanshawe and did not attend Community. Chris & Paul learn the difference between universities and colleges in Canada with many examples: Western, Ryerson, MacEwan, NAIT, Edmonton Digital Arts College. Jeff spent several years with Corus at 630 CHED, AM 640 and CJOB. If you’re interested in the Edmonton podcast meetup Chris referenced, check out Meetup.com. Jeff’s very talented partner and spouse is Sally Poulsen. AMI is an amazing organization that produces content for the blind, deaf and Canadians with mobility issues. Paul mentions that one organization in Grand Rapids that also work in the accessible area is the UICA. Universal design is about creating inclusive things, yo. Jeff tells us about Blind Sighted with Kelly MacDonald, an AMI show in Toronto. Jeff & Sally started The Edmontonian back in 2009. Jeff adds that Sally did time as a journalist prior to their site for the Portage Daily Graphic in Manitoba. The two eventually started The Edmonton Media Co.. Chris discusses the SNL sketch about Michigan accents. He managed to track it down and you can watch it at the bottom of this article. You can watch the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV here. We didn’t always save everything. Hosts of the USA Up All Night show said they used to tape over the old shows to save money. Permission to Speak Podcast. Hosted by Leadership Communications Expert Kelly Vandever. Episode #12 - Deb Lavoy. Permission to Speak is the video blog and podcast that loiters at the intersections of leaders who want their people to speak up, technology that facilitates connections, and results that serve an organization’s higher purpose. Topics covered in this episode include: - Solving problems that actually mean something to people - Selling products & value propositions - Narratives from the visionary through to the details that make it real - How narratives take over to filter the way we see things - The persuasive power of narratives - Narrative focused organizations made decisions that make sense - Defining narrative versus a brand story - Narrative is a system of beliefs that you can use to interpret the meaning of things - An organizational narrative needs to have at least 4 components: (1) the big why, the big vision, what is the impact you hope to have on the world. This is generally where you’ll make an emotional connection with your audience. (2) the how, what is your approach that enables you to make progress against the vision. (3) the offer or the ask, what is it that you’re offering, your product, what is it that you deliver against that vision. (4) proof such as data and testimonials. - If you use the organizational narrative in a participatory way, people will adopt it as their own, they’ll have a stake in it - An organizational narrative aligns the way people are thinking so you can work more effectively together - The narrative hierarchy - As companies grow, it becomes harder to explain the essence of what they do, most companies take it for granted that everybody knows, and this is a big mistake. - A good narrative helps bridge the gap between different parts of the organization - Simon Synek – Start with Why - “Why” is not enough - Narrative versus storytelling - Stories within your organizations should have something in common, they should be rooted in your organizational narrative - Any manager has the ability to build a narrative for their team. In a perfect world, the manager will build the narrative based on the organization’s narrative. In a less than perfect world, expressing your narrative will help you work better with your team and the other parts of your organization - In the absences of a meaningful narrative, it becomes a matter of opinion. And then it becomes political and collaboration starts to breakdown - Nike’s narrative is that if you have a body, you are an athlete, their job is to make clothing and equipment to power that athlete - “If you have a body, you are an athlete” leads them to make sneakers that you can tie without your hands… it’s almost like the narrative makes it their responsibility to make those sneakers - Sugru founder decided that everyday people should be able to fix things, and create and customize things for themselves. That everyone should be a maker, not just people with special skills. - Great teams - Google’s research on great teams - Google research confirmed earlier research in that the best teams were equalitarian with regards to how much each team member spoke - Communication tools are important - Teams need a shared sense of mission - Teams need a common operating picture - Great team software facilitates great communications, facilitates relationships and create a common operating picture that teams can use easily - Teams that are amazing are the ones where there is mutual respect and trust. It’s not about blaming, it’s about what went wrong and let’s fix it. The make one another feel good. - When teams aren’t functioning well, the problem to fix is how to restore trust. - Pleasant surprises along the way… there’s always great people who are willing to help and there’s always great people who need help. - People want a connected relationship, you just need to let it happen

We spend a lot of time thinking about the legacy we're building. What is the thing that threads everything you've done together? What is the mark you're leaving on the world, both in the career or work you do and the way you live your life? These are big questions. And they're what we're exploring in this week's episode with Jocelyn Glei. From the time she was a kid, Jocelyn had been drawn to writing, publishing and entrepreneurship. In high school, she launched her first "zine," printed on copiers at her dad's office. Her interest in language deepened through college, and upon graduating she moved through a series of ventures that kept putting her in charge of bigger and bigger editorial teams and budgets. Then, in 2009, Glei hooked with Behance founder, Scott Belsky, to head up now legendary creative mega-site and the annual conference for creative pros, 99U.Along the way, she's also curated a powerful three-book series, the latest of which, Make Your Mark, releases this week, boasting extraordinary essays from creative legends like John Maeda, Warby Parker co-founder and CEO, Neil Blumenthal, SY founder, Keith Yamashita, Sugru inventor, Jane ni Dhulchaointigh and many others.
Kevin and Mike discuss Sugru ... whatever that is.
Will and Trent get far too geeky early in the morning talking Marvel movies, Infinity Gems, the smell of patriotism, and fun with Sugru. All of this and an announcement of a live NetHeads show at the SLCC on 4/18/2014.
A very small thing is going to make a very big difference to many people's lives!

Davin Granroth joins Tim Keirnan for a discussion of a structured design review method. This way to critique a design obtains maximum useful feedback with minimum pain to people's feelings. Tim refers to it now as "The Granroth Review Method" but Davin is quick to thank some writing professors at Michigan State University for the concept, which Davin has adapted well to our UX professional needs. You can read about this method over at Davin's blog:http://blog.davingranroth.com/2011/01/a-model-for-ux-design-reviews/You can read about Sugru, a clay-like fixit and "mechanical hacking" material, attheir very well-done and fun website:http://sugru.comFinally, here's a link to Red Green, whom I referred to in the closing minute:http://www.redgreen.com
