In Episode 16, you'll hear our conversation with Harold "Mr. Bones" Brazil discussing why he is looking at returning to his north end roots and vying to become a city councillor. Part 1- Listeners are brought up to date on the latest ground breaking columns from Marty in the Winnipeg Sun:NDP floats “better health care” and “lower costs” slogans to the masses Asagwara swamped by multiple disasters in health careCity encampment policy failing to protect neighborhood residents 9.44 Part 2- He's "98% sure" he's going to put his name on the ballot in the October election. But first, Harold Brazil wants to gauge public opinion about the issues and public support for a political outsider taking on 16 year Mynarski representative Ross Eadie. With varied careers including starting the Mr. Bones Pizza franchise, becoming an emergency room nurse, and more recently working as a realtor, Brazil has always been an optimist, as well as a hustler. Coming from the Lord Selkirk housing projects, as a kid he collected beer bottles with his wagon to cash in. But the decline of the area troubles him:"I would not let my 9 year old walk that area now, it's not safe... people do not feel safe in Mynarski and the North End and I would like to bring back safety."He says problems with Transit, potholes, snow removal on sidewalks, and community parks are being raised by people urging him to stand for election. Also, how "we have not taken care of downtown." 26.22 Part 3- Brazil talks about the marketing successes of Mr. Bones Pizza in the 90's, and admits that their business model would be challenged nowadays by safety concerns for their delivery drivers and store staff. He also speaks about his experiences as an ER nurse.33.40- Brazil explains that city council's failure to deal with public disorder and arson is undercutting the investment of longtime homeowners in Winnipeg neighborhoods. "The closer you get to downtown, it gets harder to sell and these houses are on the market for 30 days or more."Hear him describe how private mortgage lenders are redlining certain areas of the city, including the North End near St. John's Park. They won't finance a home purchase, "even with a 35% down payment."40.35- Harold Brazil reflects on the fight he had in the 1990's against the Manitoba Telephone System hiking prices on small businesses- and how Peter Warren of CJOB took up the cause. The publicity helped force MTS to back down within 3 weeks. "I helped save Manitoba businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars. As a 22 year old, I went against the big corporate, and I'll do the same thing for my ward when it's time. I think they need a fresh new energy... to try to make change." He can be reached through his Facebook page- https://www.facebook.com/harold.brazil.bones***** With a civic election coming in six months, we are asking listeners of the TGCTS Podcast and readers of our columns in the Winnipeg Sun to support this independent reporting and help us meet our operating costs.* The Season Seven Support campaign has a target of $7500 - there is no funding from government solicited or accepted! Okay... The Winnipeg Jets slayed the latest dragon Tuesday night, knocking off the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1. Now comes the real test. A massive home-and-home with the Colorado Avalanche looms Thursday and Saturday -- and it may not be an overstatement to say the season hangs in the balance if Winnipeg can't come away with at least three or four points. Cam doesn't think that's hyperbole. He dug into the remaining schedules for the Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Seattle Kraken -- the teams battling for that final Western wild card spot -- to see who might have the clearest path down the stretch. And the results? You might be surprised -- especially when it comes to Nashville and Los Angeles. Plus, Bob Irving, a major voice on 680 CJOB, joins the show to share his thoughts on the Jets' win over Vegas and what lies ahead over the final 11 games. We'll also dive into which elite NHL defenseman is driving the most production at five-on-five -- and whether the Ottawa Senators have laid out a blueprint the Jets can follow to reach the postseason. There are 82 games in an NHL season -- but some carry more weight than others. What may look like a routine matchup on the schedule can quickly turn into a pivotal moment, and Tuesday night's game is exactly that. The Winnipeg Jets host the Nashville Predators at Canada Life Centre in a crucial Western Conference showdown. Nashville sits just one point ahead of Winnipeg, while the Jets remain five points back of the Seattle Kraken for the final playoff spot. If Winnipeg wants its final 16 games to mean anything, this is a game it simply has to win. Cam and Jim tee up the matchup and dive into the biggest storylines surrounding the Jets -- including the play of Kyle Connor. With Patrick Kane climbing to fourth all-time among U.S.-born goal scorers, where does Connor project on that list? The answer may surprise some. After a contentious previous appearance that sparked plenty of buzz, Ross Levitan of 680 CJOB returns with more strong takes on the Jets' season and where the team is headed. Cam Poitras is flying solo today with Jim Toth still on the mend. Neal Pionk is day-to-day, which means that Elias Salomonsson might be soon making his NHL debut after being called up with the Manitoba Moose and being paired with Dylan Samberg. CJOB's Kelly Moore joins to discuss that and the upcoming road trip starting in Washington on Wednesday. So… what's really hurting the Winnipeg Jets? Cam has two theories about why the Jets, now past the quarter mark of the season, find themselves on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture — and both might surprise you. Let's just say overtime plays a bigger role than you'd think. A listener also asks whether the Jets should consider splitting up Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele to spark more offense. Is it the right move? After wrestling with the reasons behind the Jets' struggles, Cam starts to come around on the idea. Plus, trades are tough to pull off right now with so few clear sellers across the NHL… at least for the moment. But two teams have emerged that appear ready to deal — and could be searching for the right trade partner. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I'm leaving Winnipeg. So it seems only fitting that I interview the man responsible for bringing me here 19 years ago. Garth Buchko was the General Manager at CJOB/Power 97 when we met in July 2006. "Butch" shares his journey from a young radio enthusiast to becoming a successful general manager at Corus Entertainment He discusses the competitive Winnipeg radio market, highlighting the importance of relationships, hard work, and innovative sales strategies. The conversation covers Garth's experiences with notable personalities like Ralph Warrington who programmed CJOB for many years, and Howard Stern during his stint at Q107 Toronto. After leaving Winnipeg, Buchko took on roles with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and later became a part-owner and general manager of NL Radio in Kamloops. The interview concludes with Buchko reflecting on his career, the changes in the radio industry, and his retirement in Victoria, emphasizing the joy and camaraderie that made radio special during his time in the business. Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Podderapp: Where podcasters can get access to their advanced data dashboard here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For the long weekend, a special interview with Paul Edmonds, the radio voice of the Winnipeg Jets! Every season hockey fans tune out the TV feed and tune in their radio to hear Paul on CJOB & Power 97. Part 1 - Marty's imitation of Peter Warren inspired Paul to show off his own. He tells about handling sports radio call-in shows and why doing the morning drive is a challenge. They exchange memories of their earliest days covering sports (in Marty's case, at CJUM-FM) and the influence the legendary characters of CJOB, the sports leader in the city for decades. The programming techniques to retain the audience all day was unmatched. Paul believes the shift to fans being able to listen to podcasts on demand benefits everyone. A slight detour takes listeners to review of the grub sports reporters are provided in the press box. 16.35 - Paul attended the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association event inducting Peter Young to the media Roll of Honour. On local TV for over 30 years, Peter championed local amateur athletes and teams and proved that extended sports reports could draw a big audience. Most importantly, The Sports Star of the Week feature helped develop a sense of community in the region. "It was a drawing card," Paul says of the fifteen minutes of sports that CTV allotted. "It was much watch TV." Listen for his Cactus Jack imitation! 24.45 Part 2 - The honouring of Peter Young leads to a discussion in Episode 39 of the great figures in Winnipeg sports broadcasting history. Paul tells a story about a predecessor behind the Jets microphone, Curt Keilback. In an era when TV carried perhaps 1 game on weeknights, radio play by play was the lifeline for hockey fans to follow their team. Paul loves Curt's book, Two Minutes for Talking to Myself35.20 - Keilback was made famous because of his big calls on play by play for the Jets. Now, Paul's description of the Game 7 comeback by the Jets against the St. Louis Blues stands as an all-time great. Marty asks Paul for his favorite call of a big play, which is a World Series at-bat that lasted for 9 minutes.********Thank you to our donors in July, who helped us surpass $2600 in donations so far for the Season Six campaign. With a goal of $10,000, we're counting on listeners of TGCTS and readers of Marty's columns in the Winnipeg Sun to continue the momentum in August.
