Most of you probably don't know who Kenny Epstein is, but you should. He's the owner and CEO of El Cortez. Much more than that, he's the guy that made the conscious decision to not remodel the property but to refresh it while retaining the vintage feel the property permeates. Kenny understands what El Cortez does so well and sees the value in continuing to service those customers. So instead he upgraded just about everything in the property, all without changing the esthetic. This year, the El Cortez, and Kenny, celebrate their 80th birthday. So we took the opportunity to talk history and the El Cortez with the man himself in the first ever 360 Vintage Vegas Interview.

Plus, there's all the Vegas news and views you can stuff into your insatiable maw. Which would make a pretty good bad name.
The El Cortez Downtown Las Vegas casino hotel and the operator Kenny Epstein are legends in the industry. Founded by Bugsy Siegel, later owned by Jackie Gaughan, Kenny Epstein has been in charge for at least 50 years. The Downtown renovation has given new life to the old lady, and constant renovations have made it a “hip” destination who's demographics are largely 50-50 instead of the previous 70-30 local. He was jointed in the discussion with his longtime partner Mike Nolan. He spoke with GGB Publisher Roger Gros at the El Cortez last fall.

The Curse of the LuxorA few Celebrity ghosts.Zac Bagans' Haunted MuseumNotes:Three storytellers, Thurkettle, Townsend, and Hodur, rendezvoused in Sin City for a special My Dark Path field trip, recording clips of discussions had in key places surrounded by stories of supernatural happenings. The first clip was recorded in The El Cortez where the supposedly haunted room, 3300, sits in the historic wing our team was exploring. One of the biggest major criminal entities who made a fortune in driving the evolution of Las Vegas was Benny Binion; his hotel tells all about its ghosts. Despite being a convicted murderer and an experienced gambling hall boss even before his initial arrival to Vegas, there is a statue of Benny in Vegas today. His story started in Texas where he was born in 1904, but couldn't go to school due to chronic poor health. Hence, Benny got his education by accompanying his father, a horse trader, on trips throughout the wild, wild west where many fellow horse traders also gambled. As a teenager, Benny got more involved in the gambling business till he moved to El Paso where he began bootlegging and even committed murders, but walked scot-free based on his influence. When his destructive nature attracted attention beyond his influence, he moved to Las Vegas where he set up the Binion's Horseshoe Casino, leveraging higher stakes than other casinos to attract high rollers, as well as many other perks that transformed gambling in Vegas to what it would evolve to become today. In the end, the law caught up with Benny as he was arrested for tax evasion and lost his Nevada gaming license but "The hotel Apache", the only section of Binion's with its name restored, is the only hotel that will openly tell you it is haunted. At the front desk, there's a pamphlet describing its history of haunted encounters with a card to report yours; this list is on the Dark Path Website. Interestingly, most cases were reported in the same rooms or areas of the hotel, with no explanation from the hotel as to why. Another place in the suburbs known for supernatural events is the La Palazza Mansion also known as The Death Mansion, The Devil's Mansion, and The Hell House. Located in a residential neighborhood, miles from the Las Vegas strip, it was once owned by Tony “The Ant” Spilotro, who was an enforcer for one of the deadliest gangs in Vegas. Rumored to be the place where many of Tony's heinous acts were carried out, the house is also known for legends surrounding it like having dead bodies in the backyard and a drain in a room for spilled blood to flow out. La Palazza does not offer ghost tours but there are stories of previous owners like Chris Martinez, who led the Ghost Ad

COMIC-CON BEGINS: Origin Stories of the San Diego Comic-Con and the Rise of Modern Fandom
We forge ahead at light speed into the complex scenario of how the first San Diego Comic-Con was cobbled together by our illustrious cast of kooky characters. From there, we venture onward through the mid-1970s as the Con grows exponentially in both physical size and attendance, heralding the “golden years” at a ramshackle downtown hotel that had seen better days called the El Cortez.Narrated by Brinke StevensCreated and Directed by Mathew KlicksteinExecutive Produced by Rob SchulteWritten and Produced by Mathew Klickstein, Rob Schulte, and Christopher TylerEdited by Rob Shulte, and Christopher TylerMixed by James Bilodeau Original Music Composed by Max DeVincenzo and Produced by Fox Tracks MusicWith help from Brannan Goetschius and Michael FischeAll interviews (unless otherwise noted) conducted by Mathew Klickstein.Principal interviewees/contributors (in alphabetical order):Al Jean, Anthony Russo, Barry Alfonso, Barry Short, Bill Lund, Bill Mumy (provided by contributor), Bill Schanes, Bjo Trimble, Bob Arendt, Brinke Stevens, Bruce Campbell, Caseen Gaines, Chuck Graham (provided by SDSU), Clayton Moore, Dave Clark, Dave Scroggy, Erin Hanna, Gene Henderson, Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, Gus Krueger, Felicia Day, Frank Miller, Ho Che Anderson, Igor Goldkind (provided by SDSU), Jackie Estrada, Jeanne Graham (provided by SDSU), Jim Cornelius, Jim Means, Jim Valentino, Joe Russo, John Pound, John Trimble, Kevin Eastman, Linda Yeh, Lloyd Kaufman, Kevin Smith (provided by contributor), Len Wein (provided by M. Their origins are not linked to organized crime and their stories aren’t the sort of things people make movies about. However they would become the shining examples that the gaming industry could not only exist without the Mob but could continue to grow. A fact that was established in 1941 and continues to endure to this day. The El Cortez is the city’s oldest hotel casino to continuously operate under the same name and only the 2nd casino ever added to the nation’s historical preservation list. It’s also the only casino on that list still open to this day. This is the story of the people and the properties that shaped Downtown Las Vegas.
Random Vegas In 1968, just before his 2-week residency in the lounge at the Riviera was coming to an end, Shecky Greene was informed that plans were to turn the showroom into a Keno lounge. In an attempt to be funny, Greene came to the stage that final night and began chopping up the stage floor and giving out pieces to guests in attendance as souvenirs The next morning, unaware of this antics, ownership informed Greene they were going to extend his run in the lounge for another month. Ah, hello. My deepest “apologies” for missing a whole week of podcast content *eye roll*. Well, we're back now. Really, t's not like we pumped out some bullshit for 41 consecutive weeks or anything. And maybe I just needed to chill a little bit and get my internet situation sorted out. Honestly, there shouldn't even be internet out here, we're in the middle of the god dang desert. But don't worry, Tony and I are both getting 5 bars and we're here to party. Today, the guys unload some more of their leftist “bullshit” while the USA melts down. Then, Griff marvels at how quickly he was able to flood his new home with beers, not to mention picking up his 29 bottles of sugar stout from Horus. There's barely anywhere to stand in here! Finally, Tony tries his best to reminisce on the halcyon days of drunkenly stumbling through the slot banks at the El Cortez in a Vegas-themed game of “This or That.” What is this like a 300 word show description? Barely says anything about the show. Alright well, I guess bye!

n an effort to promote the reopening of Las Vegas, casino mogul Derek Stevens is giving away 1000 free flights to town. Many of the flights will originate from his home town of Detroit. Grand Rapids is another city in Michigan with a number of scheduled flights. Stevens owns the D Casino and The Golden Gate in the downtown section of Las Vegas. His goal is to help jump start the sagging local economy. Las Vegas tourism the past two and a half months all but disappeared. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak shut things down in mid-March to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Tracking The Updated Las Vegas Casino OpeningsLas Vegas is once again abuzz with activity. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak gave casinos the green light to reopen their doors for business starting Thursday, June 4. Many area properties are busy preparing their casinos, bars and restaurants for the return of guests in the coming days. Downtown casinos Plaza, El Cortez and the Golden Nuggets all plan to be open right away. Caesars Entertainment has targeted Caesars Palace and the Flamingo for June 4. Other prominent casinos on the Las Vegas Strip planning to open include the Bellagio, MGM Grand and New York-New York. The Venetian is also on the list. Thermal Cameras Checking Temperatures at Casino EntrancesThe Nevada Gaming Control Board has been rather specific when it comes to the requirements to reopen a casino. The earliest date is Thursday, June 4 and an approved plan needs to already be in place. That plan includes safety protocols for sanitizing facilities and promoting social distancing on the casino floor. Another requirement is checking the temperature of guests as they enter the building. One option is the use of thermal cameras as a noninvasive way to accomplish this task. Installing these types of cameras is a costly proposition. There is also no guarantee they will work as planned. GamebetDC Makes Its Official DebutIt took longer than expected but GamebetDC is finally up and running. Powered by the DC Lottery, this brings online sports betting to Washington, DC. The original start-up date was in March but this was delayed by the coronavirus outbreak. Betting is currently available on the website. There are plans to launch the mobile betting app some time later in June. The initial delay took place last year because of a lawsuit. Last October, the Washington DC Superior Court ruled in the District’s favor. This enabled the Greek-based company Intralot to continue its effort to build the online betting platform.

The latest winner from Wigan is Vicky Bevan. She is relatively new to playing bingo for real money online. Yet, after four months she must feel like a pro with a jackpot hit of more than 35,000 pounds. She won with just a two pound stake. The other big winner is from Rochdale. In early April, she walked away with close to 50,000 pounds off a 3.60 stake.Bitcoin Yearly Moving Price Average Nears All-Time HighEver since the market value of Bitcoin (BTC) crashed in March, it has been on the move. One tracking variable used by some investors is the yearly moving average price. This key market indicator is on pace to hit a record high if markets can sustain their current trends. Late 2018 was the floor for this indicator at $3,100. The slow grind upward in 2019 and through the first four months this year has pushed BTC to this new landmark. The yearly moving average price is currently close to $9,000 for just the second time in the history of cryptocurrency. #Bitcoinnews #BitcoinGambling #GamblingNews Las Vegas Design Firms Working on Safety Shields for Area CasinosNevada’s governor has yet to give state casinos the greenlight to reopen their doors to the public. Yet, many of the casino properties in Las Vegas are busy making plans. The No. 1 concern is the safety and welfare of workers and patrons. One product manufactured by Screaming Images is a clear acrylic safety shield. They could be used to help separate players from dealers at table games. They could also be used to separate one slot machine from another. Testing is underway at one downtown Las Vegas casino, El Cortez. The product can be quickly installed through the use of a divider system.NASCAR Returns to Live Racing at Darlington Raceway on May 17After idling its engines for close to two months, NASCAR recently announced plans to resume its 2020 racing schedule. In this episode of the Hotel Design Podcast we welcome designer Kimberly Daoust, who is principal at Tandem - a Las Vegas-based interior design firm that she co-founded in 2005. While she lives in Austin, TX, she commutes by plane to Vegas. The conversation starts out with how Las Vegas is a great place for design freedom. Kim loves that by nature, the city is impermanent and so is its design. Glenn and Kim then discuss the first casino resort project that she ever took part in 25 years ago. The project was a riverboat casino, which she did with Paul Steelman - another visionary who was previously featured on The Hotel Design Podcast. Kim then shares her experiences working on creating The Cromwell, which was the first project that her company Tandem completed on The Strip. The project challenged her to utilize original structural and design elements of the former Bill’s Gambling Saloon, such as the existing chandeliers, as a starting point for a modern boutique hotel design experience. She also shares details about what it was like working with Las Vegas icon and nightclub visionary Victor Drai, and how he inspired her to utilize a more feminine design approach throughout the property. They also discuss the opportunities and limitations designing new guestrooms in older guestrooms ideally built for a previous era, and how the small scale of the entire property has affected its overall evolution. The conversation shifts to her role in designing the Bret Michaels suite at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya, and then back again to Las Vegas to discuss recreating the historic El Cortez. Kim discussed tying in a graphic street art element into the design, and the notion of designing something seemingly timeless in a city where timeless is anything but that. She also discusses the Black Hawk Casino expansion project in Colorado outside Denver. It has a Wild West feel in an area that goes back to the days of gold rushes back in the 1800s. Kim goes into detail about how she created a sense of authenticity for the 500-room hotel expansion. The area is also exceptionally small, and the one-lane roads to leading to the hotel are curvy and narrow, so she talks about how that challenge affected the entire project from design to execution. Finally, Glenn and Kim discuss how she found her calling as a designer, how her dad’s role in the fabric business affected that goal, and how she found her way into casino and resort design through residential design. She also shares an emotional story regarding designing and building the Hard Rock Biloxi, MS, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina just before it was set to open. Kim also provides many incredible tips that you have to listen to. Visit us at www.hoteldesignpodcast.com for more episodes, or feel free to email us at info@hoteldesignpodcast.com.

We start out 2019 with an explosion not a bang. Our guests are award-winning investigative journalist May Jeong, award-winning writer/stand up comedian Josh Gondelman and singular blues punk rock n’ roll bad ass musician Shilpa Ray. Along with special surprise guest Mitch The Enthusiasm Coach and Megan Fitzpatrick Gets It Off Her Chest. Christian and Shonali catch up on the holidays, mom talk, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Schulz' signature and the opportunity which 2019 will hopefully bring. Their first guest is investigative journalist May Jeong. May is a wunderkind. She's spent years living in Afghanistan covering the war and received high accolades for reporting from there. We discuss her courage, smarts and as she calls it being "young and dumb" in terms of saying yes to every opportunity to get the real story. Look for her upcoming work in the New Yorker regarding another explosive ground breaking story. Shonali's new 2019 positive attitude is due to the new man in her life, Mitch The Enthusiasm Coach. Mitch who also wears two headbands at one time shows Christian how to get inspired about the year and take charge of his life. The second guest in the lineup is award winning writer and stand up comedian Josh Gondelman. He was a former writer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and currently write for the new late night show on Showtime with Desus and Mero. What Christian and Shonali find most interesting about Josh is that he is from Boston, has no accent AND was a former preschool teacher. 2019 is going to be a big one for Josh. He just recorded a one hour comedy live special and has written a new book "Nice Try - Story of Best Intentions and Mixed Results" to come out this year. Oh and Desus and Mero's show debuts on February 21st. Get It Off Your Chest with audience member Megan Fitzpatrick. She comes forth with martini in hand. Our problems stem mostly from the weather and inconsiderate people. Whew, don't you feel better. Our last guest is the amazing multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter punk rock blues musician Shilpa Ray. Wow. Shonali bonds with Shilpa on being Bengali Female Desis who play rock n' roll. Unbelievably she had a music pageant dad who had to force her to practice her harmonium and vocals at a young age. Believably he also still wants her to go to med school. Shilpa says she is actually shy which is shocking. Shilpa kindly answers Christian's template musician question beautifully. Please go see Shilpa play live at El Cortez on February 8th with James Chance to find out why people call her god. Shilpa performs two songs live on piano in the Red Room, 1) Same Sociopath and 2). Cry For the Cameras Enjoy! Happy New Year! Also special thanks to Matt Hunziker for coming in a crushing it as Mitch the Enthusiasm Coach!

The second half of our chat with Jeff Samsonow is all about his indie media production adventures. We learn about the company started by he and Sally Poulsen, The Edmontonian Media Co. Some of the things discussed: Comedy that punches up, other talented Edmontonians, and advertising in this digital age. Where did our guest go after AMI? Jeff shares his adventures with Postmedia and Capital Ideas. He also mentions gastropost. Karen Unland and Brittney Le Blanc started Capital Ideas according to our guest. Jeff also adds how he got to know them through McEwan and 630 CHED. Karen runs Seen and Heard in Edmonton, the Edmonton podcast meetups and is trying to start a podcast network. The Edmontonian Media Co. was born from the work Jeff & Sally Poulsen put into The Edmontonian. Their first production was called, wait for it, Sick Day. The first short was inspired by the cold opens they did on the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV. Jeff tells us about Startups, another short they made featuring Karen Unland, Owen Brierley of EDAC and former guest Marty Chan. The Edmontonian Media Co. also produced Obstacles. Jeff worked with Christian Zyp during Startups. The most recent production from Sally & Jeff was the amazing Underdogs of Comedy. They were inspired by The Meltdown. Simon Gorsak and Brett McCrindle often host the Underdog Comedy Show. Dion Arnold started the show, originally. More comedians in the area mentioned: Clare Belford, Carina Morton & Simon Glassman. Speaking of places to find comedy in Edmonton, try The Underdog, The Empress Ale House and El Cortez. Keep your fingers crossed, Jeff & Sally have submitted The Underdogs of Comedy to AMPIA’s web series award category. Jeff’s newest venture is Edmonton Quotient, telling the stories of Edmonton in an online magazine. Chris always makes it weird and tells a story of companies reaching out to advertise in porn. Chris also makes a pitch for Someday in February. Learn more about podcasting in Edmonton at seenandheardyeg.com. Thanks so much for listening. Really grateful that Jeff Samsonow took time to drop in at Chris’ place to do the podcast. Be sure to check out Edmonton Quotient and The Underdogs of Comedy. Questions, comments?
