Dec 19 2023- Bike Lane Plan Facing A Fight in Winnipeg's West End

Episode 35 is a special report about our coverage of Winnipeg's troubled bike lane projects. There's more trouble for the Moving on Marion scheme- and after an interview with a city councilor, we found trouble on the horizon for another City parking-killing project, after we clued in the area businesses. When we interviewed Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt on October 19, he had just heard something. A favorite guest of ours on Kick-FM and on City Circus on Shaw-TV, Russ Wyatt was invited to explain why he raised the Osborne Village bike lane process with area Councilor Sherri Rollins at a committee. 7:04 Bike lane going where?? In the discussion with Marty Gold about the need to "change the culture" at City Hall, he interjected that he just found out about the next target of the urban visionaries- the street synonymous with Winnipeg's working class melting pot. You'll hear the big reveal and the mutual concerns which led to us investigating. 8:16  We kept our eyes on it, and went down to Sargent Avenue. Listen to the details: the West End Biz director confirmed something was in the air and that they hadn't been consulted. Business owners told TGCTS they reject any idea of eliminating parking on Sargent, as they already struggle with rampant theft, crime and inflation. And another factor raised- bike lanes will impede police and emergency response in the West End and to Health Sciences Centre. Marty does some educated guesswork of where the bike lanes would go, how gridlocked it would be, and why no one at 510 Main Street cares- but we do. DONATE HERE- SUPPORT WINNIPEG'S ONLY PUBLIC AFFAIRS PODCAST AND ACTIONLINE 19:32  Part 2- Around the City, the Bike Lanes review: In Wolseley- traffic jams every morning. How's that idling going for ya? In Osborne Village- Stradbrook is now a narrowed clogjam, with parking in the area slashed by over 180 spots. As Wyatt pointed out, why are property owners treated differently for bike lane proposals than for local improvements? On Provencher, the BIZ set the standard, and still are, for taking a stand that bike lanes should "strike a balance between promoting sustainable transportation and preserving the heritage and vitality of our local business community." But on Marion Street a few blocks south, the Norwood Grove BIZ members were caught off-guard and kept in the dark, as we exclusively reported. We have exclusive details on how the City was forced to do another Open House just with them after our investigative series- and we learned the insincere consultation session in September made Marion St. merchants even angrier. Then, hear all about the other half of 'Moving on Marion'- Goulet Street. We describe the fiasco left behind after the project started this summer before council approved the plan - see the photos at Goulet Bike Lane Barricaded, New Lanes A Treacherous Wreck And a good news story- we report the latest from the Transcona BIZ. They caught on to what the City was up to, took a strong stand, and we report the result- the City backed off from taking away parking spots. 40:21-  Listen to more from Russ Wyatt: he agrees the principles of the Assiniboine Bike Lane audit - "we will never do this again" and to provide fairness for all stakeholders - should be enforced by the 7 current Council members who voted for it in 2012, including him. But he stresses - the problem with these faulty bike lane projects starts at the top. 45:00 Part 3- Why hasn't the mainstream media reported on any of this? And, why we do. Marty explains his extensive history at City Hall going back decades and as an advocate for the average Winnipegger and small businesses. Now, it's more important than ever for you to have a watchdog. Unlike the narratives and agendas set out by newsrooms, we are focused on you and your family. A rouges' gallery of thieves, thugs, gang-bangers and zonked-out zombies are running roughshod on Winnipeg streets. But among the subsets of violent criminals intimidating peaceful and defenceless residents and businesses, is a grouping that elected officials and the experts chosen by the media refuse to speak of, or ask questions about. In Episode 26, you will hear a sampling of the muggings and mayhem Winnipeggers are enduring. Pay special attention to these numbers- 12, 14 (twice), 15, 16, 17, 19. Those are the ages included in the latest round of accused goons. Teenagers - especially under the age of majority - and actual 'youths' not yet teenaged but just as violent and remorseless. Armed with machetes, knives, bearspray, and a shotgun, in the last ten days the unprovoked mayhem spread far beyond the Main Street strip and Point Douglas where police chief Danny Smyth wants the public to focus on. Not all involved are under 20, and they get special attention in this podcast too, as Marty describes the reports- from St. Vital and St. Boniface in particular- as bus stop users, cashiers and other teens were targetted and traumatized. ** Support our independent citizen journalism via paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia ** No one ever talks about who is responsible for these kids - are there parents involved, CFS, the Public Trustee? Why is the community made to suffer for the failures of child welfare workers, Danny Smyth, and the courts? TGCTS will keep demanding accountability and speaking out for the victims- many of them also youths, and senior citizens- and the ripple effect on morale in the community. Marty also previews some upcoming stories: Thanks to the unwarranted media attacks on Coun. Jeff Browaty, our 2019 investigation into free needle programs will recap the facts the 'public health experts' can't cover-up with name-calling; More Bike Lane Battles coming to St. Boniface, with Provencher Blvd. next on the bike lobby list - we continue to stand up for the small businesses, residents and employees in the St. Boniface Hospital district being screwed over by the biased planning process that cut them out; Ramped-up Provincial election coverage, and contrary to the 'professional journalists at work', we will explain why the amazing comeback victory of Danielle Smith in the Alberta election does indeed have resonance in the Manitoba race. ** To Sponsor or Advertise, for Public Speaking, and for more information on the CWE wrestling events: martygoldlive@gmail.com TGCTS provides institutional memory, decades of experience in the field, roots in the history of the community, and investigative skills to help ensure balance in the public square. James is a champion for conscious leadership and walking each day of adult life with our younger selves. Being a leader for momentum and growth is something that has come natural to him. With over two decades of hands-on experience in personal and business growth, he is motivated to help people face their challenges, uncover their truth, and reconnect to the wonder of youth so they can truly live the life of their dreams, by design.

With a background formed in the arena of rowing, James competed for nearly twenty years as a high performance rower and coach in both the USA and Canada. At a young age he entered the US National Development System and won a highly coveted Gold Medal at the 1991 US Olympic Festival. Resurfacing years later as a masters athlete and coach, James has put the cap on a career that accumulated over 100 top three finishes throughout North America.

His highly developed motivational and leadership skills forged in his early rowing days accompanied his creative side as he took to the acting stages of New York City and Los Angeles while in the entertainment industry. It is here in this arena that James was privileged enough to bring many characters to life on stage and screen and learn how to command an audience. During his fourteen year tenure, James immersed himself into various aspects of production and post-production, helming many of his own scripted and directed offerings.

The business stage called as well and James soon found himself helping to orchestrate the development of exclusive hospitality properties on both coasts as well as in Vancouver, Canada. His strength lay in his ability to foster an environment that promoted team unity for growth, whether overseeing a team of twelve or two hundred and fifty, that never changed for James. Understanding the power that lies in a “team dynamic” and consciously leading others towards a common objective was a key part to his success.

His deeply enriched life tapestry furthered him to speak, motivate, and inspire those before him via the stage, podcasts and as the host of “The Inspirational 30”; a television show where he had the privilege of sitting down with inspirational guests from all walks of life to share their unique and inspiring roads to authenticity. The show and its 23 episodes played in re-run style fashion all over Vancouver and even into other large markets of Canada on Shaw TV.

Most recently James has embarked on traveling and speaking about his powerful new memoir, ALL IN WITH LOVE: my journey to the hero within. This book chronicles his amazing life experiences and accomplishments as well as showcases how he turned poor choices and failure into a recipe for personal growth. But above all it is a story of reconnection. Of getting back to the wonder and curiosity of the inner child and living life to its glorious potential. Beautifully and compellingly written, his story telling is not only entertaining its readers but also providing them with deep introspective questions and thoughts about life and their younger selves. 5:00 We note the passing of 'climate crisis' debunker Dr. Tim Ball, who supported us on Kick-Fm and Shaw-TV. Here is one of his excellent videos. 11:30 The flyer of St. Boniface candidate Marcel Boille makes some important points about how St. B has lost out by joining Unicity and watching their tax dollars go to "Winnipeg" and got nothing in return except for spiraling crime rates and deteriorating services. He touts separation but Spirited Kenny doesn't think it's very realistic (Headingley anyone?) 22:00 Glen Murray claims the city has gone to shit and only he can fix it, BUT he always A) leaves out the responsibility of Mayor Brian Bowman and B) never mentions that the first thing he did when he retruned to the city in 2018 was to... endorse Brian Bowman. Listen to Bowman's hint why Murray won't dare speak truth to power at City Hall. 25:40 Glen Murray tried to guilt Winnipeggers into picking up the tab to restore Thunderbird House. we tell the truth about why it failed - a $40k air conditioner it didn't need and irresponsible governance. Meanwhile Robbie Ouellette says he'd move the Mayor's office there. 37:00 - The media loves to tell about how *certain* politicians endured childhood poverty and family struggles, but the Free Press proves that it isn't only the kind of 'disadvantaged' folks usually promoted. Hear of 2 unexpected tales of mayoral hopefuls who overcame the odds to build successful careers, Kevin Klein (who spent time in a Sally Ann shelter) in corporate media, and Jenny Motkaluk - who went to University at age 16 and earned advanced science degrees before her successful careers in sales and business consulting. 47:25 - CBC has a list of Mayoral campaign planks and a discussion about how complete/accurate it is. For instance the Motkaluk housing plan had a 'help the homeless' component CBC missed, but she is way ahead in Arts and Culture proposals; meanwhile the Scott Gillingham camp was satisfied overall but added a few notes we pass along. 52:00 - RFO's transit ideas - like a buck a ride and allowing tap payment - get a good/sceptical look, as does Klein's 'trailers for the homeless' concept. We go over the CBC investigative report on Glen Murray's departure from the Pembina Institute which Marty also discussed here. Was this Murray's "Principal Skinner" moment? Tom Brodbeck rejected his apology and Kenny remarked "It's the same old Glen no matter where he goes." We then recap the Motkaluk promises to fudn the Sanat Claus parade and other events like Cruise Nites to build civic spirit. 1:10:50 - Part 2 Crime, crime and more crime - and 2 more murders. Marty thinks this election may lead to a serious discussion of the concept of Unicity as a whole.

We open Episode 16 by talking about Marty's coverage in TheJ.ca of antisemitism in the federal government, and his upcoming story about the relationship of Queen Elizabeth II with Canada and with Manitobans. Then he offers some personal comments about his experience in Los Angeles on Sept. 11, 2001 and how the aftermath led him back to Winnipeg, noting it eventually led to meeting Spirited Kenny. After discussing some changes to our planned coverage of the civic election, we get into the latest entrants onto the ballot - such as Sargent Ave. icon Sal Infante taking a run at Coun. Cindy Gilroy in Daniel McIntyre, turning that into a serious race. In particular we talk about one of our favorite guests on Kick-FM and Shaw TV, former Councilor Russ Wyatt! He is once again looking to represent Transcona at City Hall and was always a big supporter of our work. Marty tosses in a few quotes from and about Russ, from the past. Part 2 31.40 - Mayoral candidates have ideas: - Did Shaun Loney calculate 2000 trust fund housing units at $50,000 a door? He also has the idea of the city hiring people who face 'employment barriers' and what it means; - Scott Gillingham promises to invest in roads and blasted Glen Murray for his infrastructure record, but his proposal to hire "Chief Construction Officer' generated some banter; - Coun. Jeff Browaty had some sobering news.Whoever becomes Mayor will be facing a $50M shortfall in the rainy day fund, (not to mention transit shortfalls) meaning scope creep and wants vs needs will factor in to opcoming council budgets. - Rick Shone, one way or the other, was first out of the gate to echo our call months, nay years, ago - Police Chief Danny Smyth gotta go. Meanwhile police board chair Coun. Markus Chambers says the have confidence in Smyth. - In light of that, we discuss an open letter organizing North End businesses to fight crime before it becomes a 'rough neighborhood' and they lose even MORE customers, employees, windows, and insurance coverage. "We're back to boarding up our windows" and they don't want "to go downhill." Perhaps Chambers can square that circle, since unlike the Police Board the taxpaying North End businesses DO NOT have confidence in the Chief, or they wouldn't be in this position - the meeting doesn't even invite the cops. We discuss how the policing system under Smyth has failed businesses in Winnipeg. - Lastly we try to figure out what really happened befoe the first lawsuit was filed in relation to the election, and try to provide some context to what went sideways at Bronx Park. When a well-intentioned community group hosts a Meet the Candidates event, a moderator can find the meeting is commandeered by candidates eyeing publicity before they know what hit them. We wrap up by discussing the media coverage of the election this summer - shame on radio, but bigger shame on the CRTC - and how we are going to persevere to add to the analysis and coverage that's out there. The Magic Word Is 'Starter' as Marty finally got to the bottom of the car problems! But even without getting to live events with candidates this week, we had lots to talk about in Episode 14. And as we predicted - crime, policing and public safety continue to get big attention from the Mayoral hopefuls. 2:45 - We get a couple of small corrections on the record from Episode 13 (Attn: S. Dobson and E. Duncan) 4:08 - An email from Rick Shone, running for Mayor and making a good impression along the way, is Part 1. He was responding to Spirited Kenny's remarks about police shifts in supermarkets and Shone clarifies who's paying. Kenny makes an important point about WPS officer burnout and whether taking extra special duty shifts might be adding risk instead of rest. Shone also describes his views as a small retailer of the shoplifting problem in Winnipeg which he says was made worse by lax big box stores, slams the Manitoba Liquor store "solution", and explains how he handles it at Wilderness Supply. We talk about his email and note how candidates like him and Don Woodstock have first-hand experience at street level with crime- and their ideas are worth looking at. 18:45 - Part 2 starts with a fast review of Kevin Klein's announcement this week. He would try to coordinate all the groups working on homelessness issues and try to ensure we get the best results from the grants City Council gives to them. Kenny and Marty assess that idea given the rivalries between the competing groups, and also Klein's proposal to have BIZ organizations (and the City) give entry-level jobs to recovering homeless folks. 25:38 - Robert-Falcon Ouellette took to the progressive line of "re-defining policing". His goal is to find ways to improve crime response and prevention. RFO also wants Winnipeg police training to be revised, based on ideas from the failed former police chief of the 1990s David Cassels, who walked away from the job after barely 2 years. Hear what we think of their idea for the federal government to create national training standards. We discuss how the feds are responsible for the rise in brazen criminal violence by eliminating deterrence and trial delays, and we tie it back to Shone's comments about the LCs. 34:20 - An in-progress robbery at a St. James business got no police response on Friday afternoon. The owner of Red Bomb Fireworks corresponded with Hal Anderson, who is running to replace Klein in Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood. We go over the details of how an exasperated Matt Bialek watched on security cameras - while on the line with 911 - as the criminal, who had zero fear of being caught, taunted his staff. ******* As we enter the last half of our independent coverage of the election, we thank all of you for listening, talking with us, sending us opinions questions and tips, and helping us keep alive the spirit of citizen journalism that was pioneered on 92.9 KICK-FM and City Circus on Shaw-TV. I remember seeing those in Canada, so they were a great experience. I'm here with Kim Kim Hayden. Kim, I know it's very early for you. And I guess you've got a coffee in order to keep you going.Kim Hayden  00:41I have I have my tea. Actually. I don't drink coffee. I'm not old enough for coffee yet. But yes, this is my phoenix mug. Because in the last few days in Calgary, we have dropped in this wicked Deep Freeze with lots of snow. So I'm just pretending inside it gets a little warmer underneath my feet and blanket from my legs. And I got my phoenix bug.Stuart Webb  01:07I don't blame you. So Kim Kim is here to talk about her programme she she creates authority authority assets for women in entrepreneurship. She and talking about speakers and videos. I'm really looking forward to this conversation, Kim. So I hope you're ready to go. Let's start with the first question, which is, what is the sort of ideal client you try and work with?Kim Hayden  01:33Alrighty, so our ideal client is going to be female, more likely in the 30, between 30 and 55, kind of 35 to 55, she will be a practitioner, or a coach with some sort of education background within that, right? She is or a professional speaker. And these women are all going to be just that next level into, you can actually see the six figures like you know, with that little added a tweak to their business with their presentation, they will actually land in the six figure range. So the average female in that classification in North America is $46,000 a year. And so our goal is to take the ones that are ready to move into the hunter K year.Stuart Webb  02:27That's a really interesting nation. So how do you find that the people who are in that sort of space who are ready to go to that next level? What have they tried to do on their own without, without help that hasn't quite gotten there?Kim Hayden  02:41So for women, we have three key objections, okay, I don't have any money, I have to talk to my husband, or I think I may have already tried that. Okay. So the first one you don't have anybody will you don't make money without actually investing money in assets. And I'm not talking about, you know, a new shirt or something like that, I'm talking about things that you can actually send to people who will potentially hire you pay you to do something. And if you're not investing 7%, so if whatever you're investing, as long as it's 7%, of what you want to make, you're investing enough. But if you're investing a few $100, to do something on the cheap, and you want to make $100,000, you're not going to make it people see cheap, they don't people know quality. So we come in and do that the challenges is most women are, are especially women who are in solid relationships, or marriages or partnerships, laptops, they don't want to talk to their partner, because they think they've already tried something like that. And so they're afraid to broach the conversation of financial investment or putting money into this. So they then try and do it on the cell, say, you know, yes, it's okay, if you're already known to do all the videos, you know, on your phone and stuff. But you could do a video on phone, but if you don't edit it, right, you don't cut it right, if you don't light it, right. It's just a video on phone that anybody else can do. So what are you doing that's above the grade? That's, that's, you know, the biggest challenge is they, they're like, I already did it. It didn't work. It's like he didn't do it. Right.Stuart Webb  04:25It's interesting, isn't it? I was having a conversation with somebody only two days ago. And their conversation with me was along the same lines. And it was very much along the sort of what I would describe as the poverty mindset, their their their attitude was very much one off. Well, I don't want to I don't want to I don't want to spend that much because I don't want to look too expensive for my clients because I want I don't want to increase my prices, because I'll end up putting the people off that I want to reach and my answer to them was Well, to start with nobody buys cheap and hope for the best. They always look around and say what's the most I can afford to start off by peeling To that, and use that step that expense it, you know, to make that investment in yourself to value and to justify the value that you're going to bring. So it's sometimes it's a poverty mindset, isn't it?Kim Hayden  05:13Oh, absolutely. I think of it like this, the reality and I because of in watching the Olympics, by the way, the UK snowboarder, that little girl's story is awesome. But she didn't get to the Olympics with the coach that she started with when she was six years old. But she started with a coach when she was six years old. So you need to start somewhere and escalate upward if you want to make it to the big games. Otherwise, you don't get there. You don't get there. And, and nobody, I want to make this very clear. I'm looking RED camera, you are not that special. I am not that special. Nobody's gonna save you. And nobody's going to magically find you Brene, brown spent 30,030 30 years and hundreds of 1000s of dollars in her messaging, before she was discovered overnight. So you know, what you what you put in is what you're gonna get out?Stuart Webb  06:14Yeah, no, you're very, you're very right. You're very right. Now, I'm gonna hope that the next question is going to be the answer to some of that stuff that we've just doing. Is there a valuable free asset or valuable free resource that you are, you're hoping that people will be able to come away from it. And at this point, I hope what I'm going to do is click on your website, and that's scrolling across the bottom of the screen now. So tell us is a thing to go and see where we can actually sort of get the help that we're sort of looking for?Kim Hayden  06:39Absolutely, I so first off, I do live streams all throughout the week, podcasts all throughout the week, I'm constantly talking. And the best resource is finding the right questions, listen to the people out there and ask the right questions. That's it. That's huge. I get a lot of that information. There are, you know, so much, there's so much you can learn from there. I do give everybody I always have six months free with no credit card information or anything like that. I have six months free to my membership. So you know, get in there and that includes if we're going to do a book launch, they can come to that for free. Like it's all included. So it's Yeah. Yes. Nice point with the poverty. You know what I want to share with you my mom always said so I was raised very, very, very poor. I am from a trailer park originally from a trailer park in Wichita, Kansas. I dropped out of high school and was a hairdresser at a single mom by the time I was 20. So the reality is my mother would always say and she'd have us put our skirts on a straightener tops and clean ourselves up even though all of our clothes are secondhand. And she say Kimberly Joe, poverty is a state of mind not a state of economic setup straight. And, you know, we were the charity case at school. We weren't that we were we were everybody knew, Oh, the McFadden girls, right. Everybody knew that. But we didn't look it. We didn't act it because we walked in with pride because we were good people. And we invested in ourselves, and we invested in the relationship with our family.Stuart Webb  08:23I like that, Kim, I really do. Listen, I really recommend people go to resilient series.com Listen to some more Kim's doing in terms of the podcasting and the live streaming. There's some great stuff on there, I poked around, I'm not a woman, so therefore, it's not necessarily your target audience but but I've had a good look around and there's some really excellent stuff in that even I decided I can pick up on so get into resilient series.com and have a look around what's going on what's going on. There's some really interesting stuff in there. Kim, listen, I'm hoping that the next question is going to be equally fascinating. Is there a particular book or concept or programme which really you think drove your thinking and also can add some value to the audience? We've got watching at the moment.Kim Hayden  09:02Oh, you know, that's a that's a good i. I'm like used to or I learned from every person I come across, right. I learned from all my clients. I will say that one of my favourite people that I follow that I've been following for a few years now is Mel Robbins I can really understand a lot of what she's gone through the you know, the near bankruptcy of the the loss of business that the fear of financials, the male even talks about how she was afraid to even get out of bed because it was rough. Right? And if you're sitting in that spot, I don't have a book for you. But I will tell you go and listen to the Mel Robbins five second rule because she gets really raw and gritty and we have all been there.Stuart Webb  09:54I love I love Mel Robbins five second rule is a really important one if you're struggling to get out of bed can't f5 Just do it. It's it is such a great way of overcoming that resistance and stopping that thought of, I can't do this or I'm not good enough. 12345 go. It's a really brilliant way of just breaking through all those barriers, isn'tKim Hayden  10:15it? Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.Stuart Webb  10:18Terrific. Now, Ken, I guess there's one question. You're currently sitting there thinking, I guess I wish he'd asked. I wish he'd asked. I wish. Yeah. So what's the question you wish that I was going to ask you at the moment? And then once you've asked that question, you're the best one to do it, you answer that question for us.Kim Hayden  10:35Okay, what's the one question? So why? Why the resilient series? Why the authority accelerator? That's the question I would love for you to ask. Why? Because we it's, I'm, I'm good at producing, I've produced lots of TV shows, and for CTV and Shaw TV here in Canada. So these are broadcast level. And I love seeing an amazing story, wait to unfurl. And that's what I see all my clients as these, these incredible stories that people need to hear. But I take it seamlessly from their digital TV documentary, which is a six to eight minute series, all the way through to their sizzle reel from their speaking. So it literally, you know, TV book, speaking, and all the digital assets to promote them in that. And that's what I love to do. I love to produce amazing women.Stuart Webb  11:35Brilliant. I love it. I absolutely love it. Kim, it's been fascinating having you on. Thank you so much for getting up in the cold. And getting out with your tea. I've still got like, this is my, this is the grizzly bear that I remember seeing just off the coast of Vancouver. So I was I was really impressed by doing that. Thank you so much. Thank you so much for being here with us. Really appreciate you being here for a few minutes. Kim, thank you so much for being on. I really appreciate the time you spent with us. And I hope the rest of the day is going to be good as you look into it.Kim Hayden  12:55Thank you Stuart. Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by Myke Macapinlac. Myke went from a shy immigrant who used to work as a structural designer to becoming a podcast host, a social skills coach, and a lifestyle entrepreneur. He now teaches shy people who are technically skilled to improve their social confidence so they can create meaningful connections in their personal, romantic, and professional lives. His work has been featured in the Calgary Herald, on Breakfast Television, on Shaw TV, and in the Huffington Post. A little bit of backstory now. I actually went on Myke's show to talk about my latest book, The Only Skill That Matters, and I was so impressed by the little bits of his story that he shared with me that I immediately asked him to get on the show to talk to you. As you can tell, he agreed, and thus this episode was born. I really enjoyed talking to Myke because he and I both strolled down memory lane of our own journey going from being socially awkward, uncomfortable, and lacking in confidence to where we are today. It was a great conversation, and I think there is a lot of benefit in it for all of you, both men and women. Please enjoy! -Jonathan Levi

The second half of our chat with Jeff Samsonow is all about his indie media production adventures. We learn about the company started by he and Sally Poulsen, The Edmontonian Media Co. Some of the things discussed: Comedy that punches up, other talented Edmontonians, and advertising in this digital age. Where did our guest go after AMI? Jeff shares his adventures with Postmedia and Capital Ideas. He also mentions gastropost. Karen Unland and Brittney Le Blanc started Capital Ideas according to our guest. Jeff also adds how he got to know them through McEwan and 630 CHED. Karen runs Seen and Heard in Edmonton, the Edmonton podcast meetups and is trying to start a podcast network. The Edmontonian Media Co. was born from the work Jeff & Sally Poulsen put into The Edmontonian. Their first production was called, wait for it, Sick Day. The first short was inspired by the cold opens they did on the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV. Jeff tells us about Startups, another short they made featuring Karen Unland, Owen Brierley of EDAC and former guest Marty Chan. The Edmontonian Media Co. also produced Obstacles. Jeff worked with Christian Zyp during Startups. The most recent production from Sally & Jeff was the amazing Underdogs of Comedy. They were inspired by The Meltdown. Simon Gorsak and Brett McCrindle often host the Underdog Comedy Show. Dion Arnold started the show, originally. More comedians in the area mentioned: Clare Belford, Carina Morton & Simon Glassman. Speaking of places to find comedy in Edmonton, try The Underdog, The Empress Ale House and El Cortez. Keep your fingers crossed, Jeff & Sally have submitted The Underdogs of Comedy to AMPIA’s web series award category. Jeff’s newest venture is Edmonton Quotient, telling the stories of Edmonton in an online magazine. Chris always makes it weird and tells a story of companies reaching out to advertise in porn. Chris also makes a pitch for Someday in February. Learn more about podcasting in Edmonton at seenandheardyeg.com. Thanks so much for listening. Jeff’s very talented partner and spouse is Sally Poulsen. AMI is an amazing organization that produces content for the blind, deaf and Canadians with mobility issues. Paul mentions that one organization in Grand Rapids that also work in the accessible area is the UICA. Universal design is about creating inclusive things, yo. Jeff tells us about Blind Sighted with Kelly MacDonald, an AMI show in Toronto. Jeff & Sally started The Edmontonian back in 2009. Jeff adds that Sally did time as a journalist prior to their site for the Portage Daily Graphic in Manitoba. The two eventually started The Edmonton Media Co.. Chris discusses the SNL sketch about Michigan accents. He managed to track it down and you can watch it at the bottom of this article. You can watch the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV here. We didn’t always save everything. Hosts of the USA Up All Night show said they used to tape over the old shows to save money. A wizard is practiced at using the elements to create life and magick. Tien Neo Eamas is a modern day wizard, creating life, beauty, magic out of his artwork, his teachings, his alchemy, his consultations and his presence and lessons. His life has been a journey of transformation, from one end of the spectrum to the other, from despair to joy, from self-hatred to deep self-love, from seriousness to comical delight. The first Asian Transgendered man to publicly transition in the Vancouver in the early 2000’s, Tien has pioneered a new vision of freedom from gender constraints, having the courage and audacity to begin a trans conversation that is about creation, celebration, and Joy as opposed to the realities of hardship and oppression. In 2008, Tien created Happy Tranny Day, a day to celebrate Trans people. This event was the first of its kind in the world and has since become the Transgender Day of Celebration that takes place in annually in April. Tien is a silver/goldsmith and alchemist, smithing since 1996 and practicing the mystical arts since 1991. He has a Bachelor of Fine and Performing Arts from Simon Fraser University, Interior Design and Classical Feng Shui Certificates. His mystical and spiritual life training ranges from Buddhism, Law of Attraction, Feng Shui and Chinese elemental studies, pagan and faerie studies, herb and plant magick to personal development training with Landmark Worldwide. He divides his time between Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. Apart from being in business as an artist, Tien is also a Feng Shui consultant, performer, inspirational speaker, provides ‘kick ass’ Wizard and elemental coaching, and is working on his novel and a series of workshops, spreading the power and magick of Wizardry, harnessing the elements for a magickal life. Media appearances include CBC, CTV, Home Makeover Magazine, Shaw TV, Ming Pao, The Transgender Project, MakeIt TV. He has also hosted on News For the Soul. His work has been shown at the Vancouver Art Gallery, USA, and Europe. Why I Do What I Do: I was born in Singapore in 1968. I was born a female into a mixed race, and class, fundamentalist Christian family; and my childhood was filled with fear, pain, abuse, unhappiness and confusion. In 1987, I came to Canada and had more years of struggles with family, immigration, finances, self-esteem and gender challenges. I was the first Asian transman to publicly transition in the Vancouver gay and lesbian community in 2001. I was incredibly lonely, self-hating, struggling in my new male gender and my business, and I was in debt. In 2009, I attempted suicide. The next morning, I had a hard talk with myself, ’Tien, live or die, it’s your choice. If you choose to live, promise me you will have loads of fun, otherwise go home to your maker.’ I decided to Live! Having experienced such depth of self-loathing, fear, pain and loss, I now know the heights of immense joy and freedom. This energy of joy, beauty and magick are in all that I do. I CHOOSE all that I do, and in this choice, I promise you my true essence, my love and delight of being alive. Choosing Joy is like creating a life of Magick. The Premier has asked Albertans to provide him and his caucus with feedback on the approach to health care known as the Third Way. Premier Klein wants to know what we have to say and he has given us until the end of March to speak up. SACPA is providing an opportunity for you to come and have your say. The meeting will not follow the usual format. There will be no speaker with all the answers. Nobody has all the answers. All we know is the Third Way is coming to the Legislature and that Albertans have been asked to provide their views on it. So the speakers will be you – the people gathered. The gathering will be moderated and covered by Shaw TV as usual. SACPA will thus be facilitating the Premier's request for feedback. The end of March is soon upon us. This is an opportunity for persons of all persuasions to be heard.
