How can mentoring lead to a whole new career? How do dinner conversations and AI come together to drive entrepreneurship? How are some people changing the world as they change gears? Talk about REINVENTION! Well, I did. Meet two more honorees of the Folio: awards named to the Hall of Fame, in this "two-fer" episode on Doug Olson and David Adler, both of whom have gone from being presidents of publishing companies to reinventing themselves...and parts of the industry. First up: Doug Olson. Doug went from a career in the tech side to the publishing side, ultimately running Meredith Magazines (think: "Time," "People," "Better Homes & Gardens"...) to NOW hangin' with the digital natives doing bling-meets-social media, as Co-CEO of "Bomb Party," with its TikTok-famous jewelry reveals! Bet you didn't see THAT coming. Creating Partnerships He discusses the evolution of Meredith, its major acquisitions, the partnership he headed with Walmart, and how Meredith navigated its own transition -- adding digital to print media. "Reveals" on TikTok Doug also describes his transition to #BombParty, a thriving and unique jewelry company that uses social media to engage customers. Then there's David Adler. I cannot even keep track of all the ways David has reinvented himself: from launching a magazine on DC society back in the 70s, which he sold 10 years later for a handy profit -- and is now turning those archival images into songs and content! I kid you not. But wait, there's more. He helmed big PR shops, but is perhaps best know for founding one of the best magazines on events, called "BizBash." And now? SO MUCH -- from recently launching an online events mag, "GatheringPoint.news" to yet another startup. gatheringoint.news He highlights how he is an unabashed #AI acolyte and explains how it has revolutionized his latest ventures, supporting creative storytelling and increased efficiency. But David is also stopping to smell "The Roses", making the most of his author father's legacy by helping enable that current box office hit! from "The Roses" Like roses themselves, these guests exemplify the concept of 'perennials,' described by David as individuals who continuously evolve and remain curious, regardless of generational labels. Their stories illustrate the importance of adaptability, lifelong learning, and embracing new technologies in media or just for mental well-being! "I took my entire severance pay and blew it on a two-month trip to Asia — and that decision changed my life." - Hao TranIn this episode, I felt a strong sense of kindred spirit with Hao. We both came to Vietnam almost exactly nine years ago and ended up building something rooted in storytelling. I loved Hao's honesty about how Vietcetera started from nothing — no business plan, no roadmap — just curiosity and persistence. What stuck with me most was his idea that podcasting and media aren't just about broadcasting, but about representation: Vietnam telling its own story, from the inside out.He reminded me of the importance of long-term vision. When people told him they'd run out of stories, he proved that Vietnam is overflowing with them. This is more than media; it's cultural documentation. And honestly, that's what I hope the Vietnam Podcast becomes as well.Top 5 Takeaways - Hao came to Vietnam with no plans and just $300/month: A leap of faith that would unknowingly launch Vietcetera.- Vietcetera's first-ever feature was rejected by its subject: A lesson in humility, editing, and persistence.- The first paid advertorial turned out to be a voucher, not cash: Business lessons in transparency and expectation-setting.- There was no business model — it was built on energy, value exchange, and curiosity.- Mission to “bring Vietnam to the world” is not only alive — it's overflowing with untold stories.Chapters & Timestamps04:30-From Tech Layoff to Vietnam Leap06:30-Meeting Andrew Frazier & Early Immersions09:30-The First Vietcetera Blog: Rejection & Rewrite19:00-Living on $300 a Month in Vietnam22:00-Language, Culture & Being a Vietnamese-American Boss24:30- Remote Work, Human Connection & Gen Z Trends31:00-Youth Identity, Content Influence & the Monoculture39:00-Mission to Bring Vietnam to the World41:00-Supporting the Next Generation of Vietnamese Talent"Send me a message!"This Season is sponsored by Premier Dental.Discover the potential of a confident and healthy smile with the excellent dental clinic in Ho Chi Minh Support the show

On Sunday, June 1st, 1980, Ted Turner pressed a button—and CNN went live, beaming 24/7 news into homes across America and changing the media landscape forever, while shrinking time and space forever. In this episode, we sent Julia Thompson to track down and interview people who were at CNN's Atlanta headquarters on day one. What follows is the story of a visionary who dared to build a 24-hour news network on a tight budget—in a world dominated by 30-minute broadcasts and networks spending over $100 million a year on their news. With his own money and a vow to stay on the air “until the world ends,” Ted Turner took on the giants. It's a modern-day David and Goliath tale—driven by technology, entertainment, risk, and pure tenacity. This is how CNN was born. This episode features interviews with: Richard Roth (CNN original. Covered Gulf War, Berlin Wall fall, Tiananmen Square protests, and more) John Huey (former Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief, Fortune Editor. WSJ journalist covering CNN's launch) Jack Lechner (TV/Film Producer. Professor. Multiple-Time Jeopardy! Winner) Steven Livingston (Author, The CNN Effect. Jake BrennanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jake Brennan. You probably know Jake as the creator and host of the immensley popular Disgraceland podcast; but you are about to learn a bit more about him! In this episode, we chat about Jake growing up in Clinton, Mass. in the burgeoning punk / hardcore scene. We talk about his early musician days with Cast Iron Hike, and Bodega Girls, and what led him in the direction of music in the first place. One of Jake's bands even opened up for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at a Hometown Throwdown! We talk about Victory Records, Island Records, Def Jam Records, and even how George H.W. Bush and the C.I.A. are connected to Bob Marley. We touch on Helter Skelter and Chaos by Tom O'Neill, and how those two stories helped inspire Disgraceland. I get Jake to explain exactly what the hell a MELLOTRON is, and why he decided to rely on it for the opening of his music-based true crime podcast. Then we get into his years with Bodega Girls, and how that came about; before he lets me play my favorite song of theirs (Surf's Up America). Jake explains the origin story of Disgraceland, and we touch on some of my favorite episodes, featuring: Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, and John Denver. I pry into how Double Elvis Media unfolded, and we talk about a few of the podcasts under that banner. Obviously, I have to know all about the April Fool's Day fiasco, and when we can look forward to another one. Super big thanks to Jake for sitting down with me and sharing the details on some of the things that work, and some that don't; when trying to capture the attention of new listeners, plus, what one can expect by being an ALL ACCESS supporter. Be sure to check out Disgraceland, and some of the other Double Elvis pods, including: Badlands, Blood on the Tracks, and The 27 Club.

While some may say 2023 may have been “the year of the girl,” we say, unapologetically, it was the year of the woman. Just take a look at Taylor Swift. In 2023, the term “Swiftonomics'' was coined — because Swift generated significant revenue, tourism, and jobs in every city where she performed. Like many other incredible women, she owned her power in a new way, and the world took notice. Betches Media took this concept — that ALL women should celebrate being powerful, and own our instincts to never back down — and they created a media empire out of it. Sami Sage, co-founder, and Chief Creative Officer of Betches Media joins us to talk about selling the brand, and why she's not afraid to say that she cares about making and spending money in alignment with her goals. In Mailbag, we hear from someone who's wondering if it's worth it to maintain two credit cards, and Julia Chatzky asks about best practices for sharing a credit card with your partner.
