Some moments in life are stitched together like the seams of a well-loved garment, their fabric woven with laughter, reinvention, and a refusal to let the world dictate what is possible. On today's episode, we welcome Rhonda Shear, a woman who embodies this spirit of transformation with a playful wink and an unstoppable drive. Many remember her as the effervescent host of USA Up All Night, where she brought an entire generation into the cult world of late-night B-movies, but her journey extends far beyond the glow of a television screen.Rhonda Shear is an actress, comedian, entrepreneur, and accidental feminist, though “accidental” may not quite capture the intentionality with which she has shaped her life. Her story arcs from the glitz of Hollywood to the entrepreneurial success of her intimate apparel empire, with plenty of misadventures and revelations in between. She grew up in New Orleans, a city that instilled in her a sense of pageantry and performance, leading her from beauty pageants to acting, stand-up comedy, and ultimately, to building the number one selling bra in the world, the Ahh Bra.From the outside, her career may look like a sequence of lucky breaks, but Rhonda speaks to something deeper—the power of embracing reinvention without losing authenticity. Hollywood tried to confine her to a singular image, the bubbly blonde bombshell, but she turned it into her own brand of comedy, injecting intelligence into satire and challenging expectations. “People told me, ‘You can't be sexy and be funny.' And I said, ‘Watch me,'” she recalls. Her experiences in the entertainment industry—auditioning against preconceived notions, breaking into stand-up at a time when female comedians were still a rarity, and later navigating the world of business—illustrate the universal lesson that one does not have to be what the world expects. Rhonda's path has been a testament to self-creation, a refusal to be boxed in by labels. In her book Up All Night: From Hollywood Bombshell to Lingerie Mogul, she shares the lessons gleaned from a life spent dancing between entertainment and entrepreneurship, always with an eye on what's next. One of the most refreshing things about Rhonda is her unwillingness to bow to negativity. When the reality TV industry came knocking, hoping to manufacture conflict in her life, she turned them down. “I don't do drama,” she says. “I don't need to create problems where there are none.” This philosophy extends into her approach to life and business—where others see obstacles, she sees opportunities. Whether it's transitioning from comedy to commerce or proving that reinvention is possible at any stage of life, Shear radiates the certainty that success is about mindset as much as talent. Her journey isn't just about professional transformation; it's about love, too. In a twist straight out of a romantic comedy, she reunited with her high school sweetheart decades later, and together they built an empire. Their story reminds us that some things are destined to find their way back to us, no matter how much time has passed.Life, as Rhonda Shear so effortlessly demonstrates, is about embracing every chapter with humor and grace. The journey from late-night TV to the boardroom isn't as unlikely as it seems—it's simply the next scene in a story written by someone unwilling to accept limitations.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Gwendolyn Kiste, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Rust Maidens and Boneset and Feathers (among other things), joins us to talk about a movie she somehow saw as a seven or eight year old: Red Wind. Gwendolyn is awesome, and we encourage you to check out her work!Image Description: Therapist Kris Morrow goes through a gate next to an “EXOTIC SEX” sign in search of the club her patient frequents. Gwendolyn posted about this movie on Facebook, and Julia immediately knew we had to cover it. Here’s what Gwendolyn posted:Okay, everybody: there's a movie I've been trying to remember the title of for years, so let's see if someone can help me with it.(Full disclosure: I saw this film for the first and only time more than twenty-five years ago when I was a kid, so some of these details may not be exact.)So first off, this movie was fairly sleazy, like one of those low-rent thrillers they produced a lot of in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I think it was made-for-TV, but like Showtime or Cinemax or USA Up All Night made-for-TV. Again, pretty sleazy. Way too sleazy for a kid to be watching, but too late now. I swear it was called something like "Red Willows" or another title with Red in it, but that might be totally wrong. The plot was typical thriller stuff: a plucky heroine dealing with a serial killer. I'm fairly sure it takes place in the Pacific Northwest since there's a lot of logging equipment hanging around, which comes up later. As the heroine is dealing with the murder plot, she falls in love with a guy who's helping her, and--who would have guessed it?--but that dude turns out to be the killer. When she discovers he's the killer, he tries to kill her too, but she fends him off, at which point he asks her to kill him so that he stops killing people. Rather than, you know, calling the police or something, she obliges by putting him in a contraption that looked a lot like a wood chipper. Which seems like the most difficult way possible to casually murder someone, but hey, I'm not a plucky heroine in a sleazy 80s/90s thriller, so what do I know? Now here's the part I remember most clearly: as she puts him through the wood chipper, he says "I love you," only the words are all warbly and distorted because he's obviously being put through a wood chipper. She goes into absolute hysterics at this point, as though she's been waiting a long time to hear him say those three special words to her, and now he's done it, only it's too late because there's tons of blood running out of the wood chipper (the movie is very specific in showing her both feeding his body into the chipper and the resultant blood seeping out the other end). The reason this movie has stuck with me is specifically this scene, and not for its violence but for its inexplicable take on relationships. It led me to the unshakeable conclusion that adult relationships must be both terrifying and confusing, and I promptly resolved to live a life without relationships ever because that seemed better than being expected to put your serial killer-lover in a wood chipper (which again, just seemed like a lot of needless work). Then the last scene has her musing all philosophically in voiceover as she walks through her Pacific Northwest wilderness property where she put her killer-lover in the aforementioned wood chipper, and I think there's even a dog frolicking beside her, because this movie managed to be both sleazy AND maudlin. Now, again, some of these details are probably off. Perhaps it's not a wood chipper she uses but instead something like a stump grinder or a harvester. I don't know. I was like seven when I saw this. It looked like a wood chipper to me. And this was absolutely before the wood chipper scene in Fargo, because I distinctly remember when I saw Fargo for the first time thinking, "Oh this is like that other sleazy movie!"I've searched for the title repeatedly over the years, and I've never been able to come up with what it is, leading me to believe that perhaps I've slipped into a Berenstain Bears reality in which this strange little sleazy movie does not exist. Which is probably kinder for everyone in this reality, to be honest. At any rate, if I did not in fact dream up this film, I would love it if someone could tell me the title, if for no other reason really than morbid, sleazy curiosity.Gwendolyn was pretty spot on in that summary, though there was no dog, and the movie is set in Miami, Florida. It’s also just dreadful, and full of sleazy insinuation without any on screen sex, but plenty of blood coming out of a wood chipper at the end. It also has one of the least believable S&M club scenes we’ve ever seen. This led Geoffrey and Gwendolyn to compare it to Exit to Eden, a 90s BDSM comedy starring Rosie O’Donnell and Dan Akroyd. We didn’t discuss this in the podcast, but apparently that one was based on an Ann Rampling (Anne Rice’s erotica pen name) novel, but Hollywood decided to add in a comedy plot? How… how did Anne Rice feel about the Exit to Eden movie? We would 100% not show this movie to a child, and we also note that this podcast episode contains discussions of murder by wood chipper, and S&M, so, you know, take that under advisement. If you’re having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us! Gwendolyn Kiste, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Rust Maidens and Boneset and Feathers (among other things), joins us to talk about a movie she somehow saw as a seven or eight year old: Red Wind. Gwendolyn is awesome, and we encourage you to check out her work!Image Description: Therapist Kris Morrow goes through a gate next to an "EXOTIC SEX" sign in search of the club her patient frequents. Gwendolyn posted about this movie on Facebook, and Julia immediately knew we had to cover it. Here's what Gwendolyn posted:Okay, everybody: there's a movie I've been trying to remember the title of for years, so let's see if someone can help me with it.(Full disclosure: I saw this film for the first and only time more than twenty-five years ago when I was a kid, so some of these details may not be exact.)So first off, this movie was fairly sleazy, like one of those low-rent thrillers they produced a lot of in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It's also just dreadful, and full of sleazy insinuation without any on screen sex, but plenty of blood coming out of a wood chipper at the end. It also has one of the least believable S&M club scenes we've ever seen. This led Geoffrey and Gwendolyn to compare it to Exit to Eden, a 90s BDSM comedy starring Rosie O'Donnell and Dan Akroyd. We didn't discuss this in the podcast, but apparently that one was based on an Ann Rampling (Anne Rice's erotica pen name) novel, but Hollywood decided to add in a comedy plot? How… how did Anne Rice feel about the Exit to Eden movie? We would 100% not show this movie to a child, and we also note that this podcast episode contains discussions of murder by wood chipper, and S&M, so, you know, take that under advisement. If you're having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us! Board our submarine as we take deep dives into Aquaman, Waterworld, Lost, Pacific Rim, and Down Periscope. Put on your swim trunks as we go for quick dips into Earth Girls Are Easy, Hot Tub Time Machine, The Princess Bride (Andruw finds a way of justifying that entry), Leviathan, Deep Star Six, Last Resort, USA Up All Night, and Silk Stalkings. And, put on your floaties as we splash around in the shallow end of the pool with at least brief mentions of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Muppet Treasure Island, Battleship, The Shape of Water, Splash, Cocoon, and much much more. Superheroes, mutants, mysterious islands, monsters & giant robots, antique submarines, hot tubs, nuclear submarines... Prepare for dive! We've got it all as we cover lots of geeky things related to the ocean, beach, and water. Hosts of the USA Up All Night show said they used to tape over the old shows to save money. The Maltin on Movies podcast with Gilbert Gottfried does not feature the discussion of lost episodes, it’s Gilbert’s podcast with Rhonda Shear. Or: “You’re on Camera Whether You Like It or Not” This is part deux of our conversation with Carolyn Fung & Paul Juricic who were grad students at The Centre for Digital Media. Their final project at the CDM was Project ACME, a personal archiving tool to collect and sort your digital data. We start off talking about the amazing physical archives they visited. For the sake of your sanity in the following notes, “Paul” is our guest. “Host Paul” is the co-host who says he loves pop music. Carolyn tells us about the treasures of The Museum of Vancouver and the Planitarium. Organizations like the institutions mentioned above don’t have the funds to create a digital archive for their treasures. Chris mentions the amazing Storycorps project as an example of a successful archive project. Carolyn shares that part of her work with NGX Interactive is about making an interpretive design. How do you make things relevant to people? It turns out that many TV shows in the late 80s and 90s reused tapes so there is no official record of the show USA Up All Night. Paul suggests we seek out Mél Hogan to learn more about the opportunities in archived data. Chris shares a fiction book that deals with digitizing books in a unique way, Vernor Vinge’s Rainbow’s End. We talk about the volume of pictures we take these days versus the past when we used film. Carolyn mentioned that she recently did a hike at Deep Cove and when they reached the top everyone pulled out their phones instead of enjoying the view. Paul says that he wishes the criticism around twitter wasn’t focused on the stream of conscience, or somewhat silly posts and concentrated on the broadcast or spam of companies that get in the way of communication. Paul uses BBM with a group of friends to stay in touch. There’s less corporate distractions and therefore it is a better tool than twitter for him. Paul tells the story of a This American Life episode where two friends were exchanging old pictures of themselves and one noticed his grandmother was in the background of his friend’s picture. Chris wants a Mr. Show with Bob & David sketch about people looking at old photos recalling the documentation process of the picture and not the subject matter. Paul wonders if there is any inch of Grandville Island that hasn’t been documented by people’s pictures. Paul discusses the future of Project ACME. Paul uses his traditional podcast plug time to tell us all that we should watch Fargo. Carolyn tells us to all go out to our local spaces that are trying to teach us about the local history, no matter the scale. They need our support and input. Host Paul is very happy that we had a tremendous number of live listeners during this show. Listen live at 7pm MST or 9pm EST on Thursday evenings. Find Carolyn on twitter, @carofung and Paul says you can find him on a sidewalk in East Vancouver. (Or Linkedin.) Two words, Kevin Kostner. Now you know why we’ve watched this film. Armin Mortazavi, one of the awesome people we met during the Montreal Sauce podcast live from CDM graciously joined us to experience Waterworld. Where can you watch it? (Or, avoid it?) Buy the Blu-Ray Or stream it: iTunes Amazon Here’s our notes, although be warned, they got wet and were hard to transcribe: Water is expensive. In 1995, this was the most expensive movie to date until Titanic was made two years later. Batman Forever made more money than this film at the box office. Yet, Waterworld finished above great films like Braveheart and Outbreak. There’s a live Waterworld show at Universal Studios theme park? According to Wikipedia it was award winning and ran for 10 years. This film is bold in its world-building, but cartoonish like a USA Up All Night movie, something like Hell Comes To Frogtown. Armin drops science on us. Why not convert sea water to drinking water instead of urine? Who does Kostner think he is, Chris Hadfield? Chris calls the film Von Dutch Punk. There’s lots of lipstick in the dystopian future for Jeanne Tripplehorn. Michael Jeter speaks his own strange language in this film, much like in The Green Mile. Is it recycling or Soylent Green? Dennis Hopper is our satirical villain and sort of fun. Baymax in Big Hero 6 has more dialogue than Kostner in this film. When Chris berates the little girl’s drawing, Arturo in the chatroom chimes in to ask, “How many opportunities does one get to draw on a Waterworld. Armin says Kostner is taking Tripplehorn to Futurama’s old New York. The guys are confused that people don’t remember dry land but do remember Captain Joseph Hazelwood. Kostner does the rear axle movie trick to an airplane? Paul wonders if Waterworld is the sequel to Zardoz. Armin’s review, “I don’t even know why I am watching this?” Chris says this is no Space Truckers which is not saying much. Lots of fun lore included on the imdb page and Wikipedia page for this film. Armin suggests that you watch Blade Runner instead of this film. If you see have seen Waterworld, Paul suggests that you watch Armageddon and pretend Michael Bay directed both. If you haven’t seen it, watch Splash instead. Chris suggests Damnation Alley for your post apocalyptic needs or The Incredible Mr. Limpet if you’re into fish-people. Thanks to Armin for joining the guys. Check out his “cartoon endeavors” at biasedcat.blogspot.ca. Hopefully, we can get Armin back if he wasn’t scared away by the Kostner film.
