On Today's Show, we have Scott Keneally - the creator of the documentary, Rise of The Sufferfests. This is a documentary that goes deep into the abnormal world of obstacle course races and the suffering that goes on inside. Scott went on his own personal journey through these sufferfests while documenting the process, not knowing what to expect but coming out of it a completely different person (in a very positive way). In general, I think it would be safe to assume that we, as a people have become weak. The average man or woman seems more likely to face obesity, autoimmune disease, and an overall reduction in happiness and fulfillment. As we continue to seek a life of ease and comfort, it is becoming painfully obvious that our quest for perpetual comfort might be the very thing that will kill us. My guest today, New York Times Bestselling author, Scott Carney, share with us how to introduce environmental stressors, how to build up more resilience, and the strategies he uses for making himself a stronger human being. Scott Carney Men, I am honored to introduce you to my guest today, Scott Carney. I came across Scott's work while connecting with another podcast Alumni, Scott Keneally. He recently wrote a book titled, What Doesn't Kill Us, and, as I read the premise of the book which is how Scott used Wim Hof's methods to improve his level of health, I knew he was someone I needed to have on the show. What I like most about Scott's work is that he is an investigative journalist who set out to expose Wim Hof as a fraud. He talks about that and how, rather than exposing Wim Hof, he ended up reaping the benefits of his work to lose weight, and build up resiliency using environmental training. In the meantime, he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in shorts and completed the Tough Guy, one of the world's most difficult - and coldest - obstacle course races in the world. He's here to talk about how he did it. Please leave us a review at http://www.orderofman.com/itunes Shownotes: http://www.orderofman.com/101 Website: http://www.orderofman.com

No doubt by now you've either heard of obstacle course racing or have participated in one. Whether you take pleasure in submitting yourself to pain and discomfort or not, I can tell you that these types of races have helped me push beyond my perceived limitations. Today writer and director, Scott Keneally, joins me to talk about his documentary, Rise of the Sufferfests, the driving force behind the incredible growth of obstacle course racing, and what you can learn about yourself through participating in a race of your own. SCOTT KENEALLY Scott Keneally is the writer/director behind Rise of the Sufferfests, the first feature documentary about the global obstacle course racing phenomenon. The film explores the history of the sport, psychology behind it, personalities that drive it, and asks what it says about the world we’re living in. Specifically: why is everyone suddenly paying for pain? He is a self-proclaimed “beta male” and in 2011 he tackled his first Tough Mudder. His articles and interviews documenting his experiences have been featured on the cover of Outside Magazine,  60 Minutes Sports, and a speaking engagement at Stanford Business School. Scott is a treatment writer for some of the top directors in music videos and commercials. And, over the past 15 years, he has collaborated on videos for Rihanna, Madonna, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, as well as Paris Hilton. Today, he's here to talk about his documentary, Rise of the Sufferfests and why all of us should consider embracing the suffering. For the past several years, you’d be hard-pressed to scroll through your Facebook feed, especially in the summertime, without seeing some of your friends posting pictures of themselves at the finish line of a mud run or obstacle race. Events like the Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, and Tough Mudder have become well-known parts of the modern recreational scene. Many of you listening have probably done one yourself. But why exactly have obstacle races, known as OCRs, exploded in popularity in recent times? Why do millions of affluent suburbanites pay as much as $200 to have their bodies bruised and banged and sometimes subjected to extreme cold, electrical shocks, and even tear gas? My guest today has spent the past few years exploring that question and he’s made a documentary sharing the answers he’s found. His name is Scott Keneally and his documentary is called Rise of the Sufferfests. In today's show, Scott and I discuss how the little-known origins of obstacle racing can be traced to a farm in England, how enterprising businessmen turned that idea into a multi-billion dollar industry, and the cultural forces that have provided the soil for obstacle courses to grow so rapidly. We also discuss the criticism levied at obstacle racing and what Scott thinks the future holds for OCRs.

Rise of the Sufferfests - Interview with the editor Erik Swanson: Episode 57

We welcome editor Erik Swanson on the show, who recently completed work on his first feature length credit: Rise of the Sufferfests, a documentary that explores the rising trend of OCR (Obstacle Course Racing). You may have heard me talk about OCR occasionally as it's become an obsession of mine in the past year. If you've heard of Tough Mudder, Spartan races or anything similar then you've probably thought one of two things: 1) "That sounds like fun!" or 2) "Why do people actually do this??" Rise of the Sufferfests sets out to answer that latter question, as director Scott Keneally investigates the world of OCR using himself as a guinea pig and interviews with multiple racers. Erik Swanson got started in filmmaking working mostly with sports editorial footage for 11 years before jumping into the world of freelancing and becoming attached to RotS with Scott and his group. Documentary filmmaking is not for the faint of heart. It can involve insanely large amounts of dedicated time, endless hours of footage to sift through and a story to find. It's not like scripted content where you always start the timeline with some semblance of a story prepared. The editor has a lot of creative control when it comes to crafting the story of a doc, but it's also a huge responsibility. In this episode Erik and I discussed: how he rose to the challenge of editing Rise of the Sufferfests how he looks for the story in the footage how does documentary editing differ from scripted content will he continue pursuing documentaries and also will he be signing up for an obstacle course race in the future? You can watch Rise of the Sufferfests right now (as of Sept 1st, 2016) on iTunes.   Episode 119 - Today’s first interview is with Scott Keneally. For those that don’t know, Scott broke the story that rocked OCR back in November of 2012 about the history of Tough Mudder.  A few months later, he parlayed that into a piece about OCR for 60 Minutes Sports. Since then, he has been hard at work at producing Rise Of The Sufferfests, a documentary which examines OCR as a whole, and what it says about our culture.    The 2nd interview is with Julia Webb. We talked to her shortly after she placed third at the Warrior Dash World Championships (WDWC) back in October. Julia discussed why she signed up for WDWC, setting baby stroller running records, and her OCR plans for the future.   Please support the sponsors of this episode:   Rugged Maniac  - Promo code is "orm5"   Udder Mud Run - Promo code is "runorm"    Battlefrog  - Promo code is "battleorm"   Show Notes:   Scott Playing Dirty by Scott Keneally Races from Hell-60 Minutes Sports More about Rise Of The Sufferfests Scott's "hypothermia video" from this most recent Tough Guy   Julia Episode 103 where we talked to Julia's friends Renee and Kimber 10k Baby Stroller World Record Atlas Pro Team Profile
