Surface Noise | Do Record Collectors Eventually Hit a Midlife Crisis?

Is there such a thing as a Record Collector Mid Life Crisis? This week on Surface Noise our special guest Amanda Schutzman helps us discuss whether longtime vinyl collectors eventually reach a point where the hobby fundamentally changes—from chasing more records to becoming far more selective about what deserves a place on the shelf. Other things such a "crisis" may make us ponder: When do you realize you might have too many records? Are you buying less vinyl than you were five years ago? We debate quality vs. quantity, upgrading existing copies vs. discovering new music, downsizing a record collection, and whether a vinyl collection can ever truly be considered “finished.” After years—or decades—of collecting, is there a natural phase shift where accumulation gives way to curation? Before that exercise in psychoanalysis we tackle the latest vinyl record and music news, including the new Bee Gees Vinylphyle release, Weezer's Pinkerton selling out through Interscope Vinyl Collective (IVC), the latest from Capitol Music Club, including the 40th anniversary of Crowded House, a new Miley Cyrus release, developments involving Suno and Jason Isbell, and the passing of acclaimed jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson. If you're a longtime record collector questioning why you still need another pressing, a newer collector building your first serious vinyl collection, or simply a music fan wondering where this hobby eventually leads, join us for another round of opinions, debates, laughs, and a little collector existential crisis. A show was attempted but cut short due to the massive emergency power grid failure in SE Michigan that we are all experiencing together at this time. We get updated on the big court cases, roll through rocker news, squeeze in a Bonerline and then... President Donald Trump said something EVERYONE can agree on. Mark Dolan and Dan Wootton are beefing. The Lindsay Clancy jury is still "delibbing." Tyler Robinson is going to stand trial for the murder of Charlie Kirk. Mackenzie Shirilla lost her appeal. Sorry, Sharilla tha Killa. Keefe D is guilty of murdering Tupac Shakur. Miley Cyrus dropped Billy Ray's last name and has one of those hip one-word names now. Congratulations to John Lennon on the birth of his first grandchild. He is dead! Twisted Sister is Dee Snider-less. However, Sebastian Bach is filling in! BUT... Sebastian has what doctor's call a little bit of an alcohol problem. Journey is falling apart. It's a total disaster. Axl Rose has been perfecting his Mickey Mouse impersonation on stage. A brand new Bonerline. Call or text 209-66-Boner to communicate with the show. Some AMAZING content was on the way... but disaster strikes. Merch is available if you want to rep the show. Rep. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has not been seen in public for 80+ days. The last real update from his office is almost a month old. He has missed 60 Senate votes — Iran war powers, housing, even the confirmation of a new attorney general — while Republicans hang onto a thin majority where every vote is supposed to matter. Pat starts with the question everybody is already asking: Where is Mitch? The Kentucky senator, 84, was rushed to the hospital on June 14. Dispatch audio said first responders treated someone in cardiac arrest and used CPR. Weeks later, his team said it was a fall, that he was briefly unconscious, that it was not a heart attack or a stroke, and that he had mild pneumonia. He left a rehab center on August 6. Since then: two old, smiling photos with Elaine Chao, staffers reading statements at Kentucky events he used to attend, security outside the D.C. townhouse, and no video, no call-in, no proof of life that would settle this. His office is not answering when he comes back on September 14. Pat also covered:  Clancy jury is back for day six after two deadlock votes — one more and it may be a mistrial Miley Cyrus dropped the last name. From now on, it's just Miley Universal's kids' park in Frisco is already being called a major flop Calvin Klein is back making the old “hot girl” commercials — Sadie Sink's new denim ads are the proof South Africa's traditional circumcision rites killed 43 more boys this season Should a senator this silent still hold that vote? Vin Diesel's Emotional Tribute & Keanu's Dolly Connection

Just when you thought Vin Diesel's greatest contribution to emotional storytelling involved family, fast cars, and staring intensely into the middle distance, he goes and surprises everybody with a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton.Welcome back to The Rizzuto Show, the funny podcast where we apparently begin with Vin Diesel singing “I Will Always Love You” and somehow get MORE unpredictable from there. The crew tries to identify the mystery celebrity behind the surprisingly vulnerable performance before learning it's Vin Diesel—and, against all reasonable expectations, everybody is impressed. His deep voice and emotional delivery lead to the obvious conclusion that somebody should probably get this man “Ol' Man River” immediately. Then comes another Dolly Parton connection we absolutely did not have on the bingo card: Keanu Reeves.Keanu's mother, Patricia Taylor, worked as a costume designer for Dolly, including creating the famous black bunny outfit Dolly wore for her 1978 Playboy cover. That outfit eventually made its way into the Reeves household, where teenage Keanu reportedly wore it for Halloween—bunny ears, bustier, fishnets, bow tie, sneakers and all. Somehow, this only strengthens the crew's argument that Keanu Reeves may be next in line for the title of universally beloved celebrity. From there, Crap on Celebrities gets moving with Miley Cyrus seemingly entering her one-name era, discussion surrounding Kelly Osbourne and public speculation about her appearance, and Bad Wolves releasing their metal version of “Jolene.” The crew also gets into the Sphere making The Wizard of Oz even more ridiculous, chart talk, Lionel Richie's health scare following his St. Louis performance, ZZ Top continuing forward, Kelly Clarkson wrapping her talk show, Jamie Pressley's reported hotel drama, and Mel Gibson apologizing after an awkward moment involving a sign-language interpreter. You know. Normal morning activities. Then Chad Gray joins the show ahead of his 30 Years of Madness stop at Delmar Hall, and the conversation turns into a trip through three decades of heavy music.Chad talks about building a set from roughly 12 albums of material across Mudvayne and HELLYEAH, including deep cuts that force him to keep lyric sheets nearby because apparently even the guy who wrote the songs occasionally needs the musical equivalent of checking his notes. He explains how he's kept his voice intact after decades of screaming and singing, what he learned from vocal coach Melissa Cross, and how his approach has evolved from essentially hitting every note “like a linebacker” to using more technique and finesse. The conversation gets deeper as Chad remembers being an outcast kid in Illinois and discovering heavy metal as both an identity and a tribe. That eventually leads into the incredible story of how HELLYEAH came together and Chad's first nerve-racking phone call with Vinnie Paul. Chad remembers going to Texas, entering the studio connected to Dimebag Darrell, and seeing firsthand how emotional returning to music was for Vinnie.Playing those HELLYEAH songs today remains emotional for Chad because, as he explains, performing them is one way of keeping Vinnie's memory alive.Chad also opens up about reaching five years of sobriety and how dramatically his life has changed. Rafe shares his own experience with 15 years without drinking, giving this funny podcast one of those rare moments where everybody stops roasting each other long enough to have an unexpectedly meaningful conversation.Don't worry. It doesn't become responsible for too long. The crew and Chad also revisit Mudvayne's unforgettable early-2000s rise, including their MTV appearance, winning the inaugural MTV2 award, meeting major stars backstage, and the absolutely stacked Ozzfest era. Chad reflects on what Ozzy Osbourne did for generations of metal bands by putting younger artists in front of enormous audiences and helping create opportunities that changed careers. There's talk of Peoria, Decatur, Illinois metal culture, touring, Mudvayne's future, Chad's current band, the legacy of HELLYEAH, and why sitting around waiting for something to happen simply isn't in his DNA.So yes, this episode begins with Vin Diesel singing Dolly Parton and eventually arrives at Vinnie Paul, Ozzfest, sobriety, Mudvayne history and Keanu Reeves wearing fishnets. We'd explain how those things belong together, but that would suggest this show has a plan.It does not. That's why you listen to this funny podcast in the first place.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rizz is preparing for his extremely prestigious duties as a Wing Ding judge, specifically in the traditional buffalo category, which is apparently the kind of responsibility this show has been training him for his entire life. The crew debates proper wing-eating strategy, whether fasting beforehand is genius or idiotic, and naturally gets Joey Chestnut involved in the conversation without Joey Chestnut actually being there to defend himself. Then there's actual rock-star business: Chad Gray of Mudvayne is coming into the studio. That sends everybody down memory lane with LD 50, old Mudvayne tattoos, central Illinois geography and the important question nobody else had the courage to ask: what exactly does “Mudvayne” mean? Welcome to the hard-hitting journalism portion of your favorite funny podcast.September also means Sober September, an idea Rizz immediately rejects because there's a wedding coming up and apparently his liver already accepted the calendar invite. The gang talks declining alcohol consumption, cocktail attire, velvet suits, bolo ties and the possibility of Rafe attending a wedding dressed like a cowboy who recently discovered formalwear. The substance discussion somehow gives way to altitude sickness, canned oxygen and e-bikes capable of sending a teenager to school at highway speeds. With local schools introducing new rules for electric bikes and scooters, the crew reminisces about riding regular bikes to school—the primitive version that required legs, poor planning and occasionally missing first period. The crew dives into reports of understaffing, blind spots, online creep behavior and the increasingly obvious conclusion that some people desperately need hobbies that don't result in police reports.Just when you thought Vin Diesel's greatest contribution to emotional storytelling involved family, fast cars, and staring intensely into the middle distance, he goes and surprises everybody with a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton.Welcome back to The Rizzuto Show, the funny podcast where we apparently begin with Vin Diesel singing “I Will Always Love You” and somehow get MORE unpredictable from there. The crew tries to identify the mystery celebrity behind the surprisingly vulnerable performance before learning it's Vin Diesel—and, against all reasonable expectations, everybody is impressed. Apparently, you get a social media controversy, an apology, a payment, an angry bakery owner, and millions of people choosing sides over four dollars' worth of dessert. Welcome back to The Rizzuto Show, where today's funny podcast begins with celebrity birthdays and quickly escalates into the Great Cake Pop Incident.First, Rizz runs through another batch of celebrity birthdays, including Zendaya, Gloria Estefan, Billy Blanks, Dr. Phil, Barry Gibb, and Lily Tomlin. Naturally, Billy Blanks gives Rafe the opportunity to explain how knowing Tae Bo has apparently prepared him for street combat. Nothing says “please don't fight me” quite like threatening a man with a dance kick. After dessert-based international diplomacy fails, First Alert 4 morning anchors Claire Kellett and Maurice Drummond join the show to talk about the launch of First Alert 4 on ABC in St. Louis. We compare morning-show schedules and discover that waking up around 2:30 a.m. is apparently a perfectly normal lifestyle choice when you've abandoned all hope of respecting your circadian rhythm.Claire and Maurice talk about balancing early mornings with family life, the changing television business, working alongside people who become family, and what it means to be part of the daily routine for viewers across St. Louis. Maurice looks back on his years covering sports, including Cardinals World Series celebrations, the Blues winning the Stanley Cup, and Mizzou's huge win over Kansas at Arrowhead. While there's no question Dolly Parton was popular, she had no intention of “going pop” throughout her 60-plus-year career. On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are chatting about the relationship Parton — who died on Aug. 25 at age 80 — had with pop music, from her crossover hits to collaborating with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus. In a 1977 interview with Country Music magazine — the same year she released one of her poppiest hits, “Here You Come Again” — Parton addressed the genre question head-on. “I never considered the fact that I was going pop,” she said at the time. “I will go pop, as far as crossing over, sooner or later. But I will go there as me. I will go there with my own music, not by trying to be something different than I am. “If my music has to have a label, I will call it country, mainly because I am country,” she added. “You cannot leave what you are. But I really prefer to call it Dolly Parton music.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Monitor engineer Kevin “KG” Glendinning joins you live from a Roman amphitheater in Pula, Croatia: eight countries in seven days into the Lorde world tour…and he’s got the receipts. You’ll hear how fifteen trips through the SNL stage started with a Carson Daly taping, why the rooms that treat you well are the rooms you remember, and what happens when a 32-year veteran finally plugs in a source expander and realizes the “new guys” were right. That’s the through-line: always be learning, always be open-minded, and never let a get-off-my-lawn attitude about new tech be the reason your phone stops ringing. Then it gets into the real in-ear monitor conversations: recreating a Celestion cab with a 2.6mm armature, the one-ear trick that quietly costs Adam Levine and John Mayer another 25% of volume, and why ear fatigue deserves the same respect a pitcher gives his arm. The road stories land hard from there. Super Bowl XLV in Dallas with snow, the Black Eyed Peas, and a lesson in letting the pros run their own show. Red Rocks (aka “Wet Rocks”) and why a mountain full of shuttle trucks is worth every minute. A locked-up console mid-residency and telling Christina Aguilera the audio will come back, all while genuinely hoping it would. A charter plane struck by lightning over the Amazon, an emergency landing at a decommissioned airfield, and waking up to the news about Taylor Hawkins. Plus the covert phone call that became seven years with Justin Timberlake, and the soft ask years earlier that made it happen. Rehearse enough that nerves turn into muscle memory, thank the people who opened doors for you, ask for the gig you want…and Always Be Performing. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 549 – Monday, August 31st, 2026 August 31st: Eat Outside Day Guest co-host: Kevin Glendinning 00:02:38 Pula, Croatia. 8 countries in 7 days 00:04:36 SNL stage for The Deftones with the Carson Daly show 00:06:20 Making an impression on touring musicians with 00:08:35 Always be learning about the new tech Learning from the “new” guys Neve 5045 Primary Source Expander Waves PSE Plugin Digico Mustard Source Enhancer 00:13:55 Always be open-minded 00:18:57 Mixing ears and the respect of it all 00:21:02 Chris Rabold mixing monitors for REM 00:22:06 Now some REM stories 00:24:23 Helping get Adam Levine & John Mayer through ear fatigue with one ear monitor 00:26:46 OzFest System Engineers and hearing fatigue 00:27:45 Sometimes it just doesn't sound right 00:30:44 Super Bowl in 2011 in Dallas…with snow! Straight Talk About Dolly Parton

Video Store Podcast

Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. I'm back today with some lesser known film and TV appearances from the late, great Dolly Parton, Queen of Country Music, Patron Saint of the Smokies, and “the greatest hick whoever lived,” handpicked by someone who grew up in Dolly's neck of the woods. Dolly Parton embodies the best qualities of all the best people I grew up around at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, and she never lost that kind, generous, salt of the earth quality when she made it big. Here are 4 Dolly deep cuts that you might have missed in her career that spanned across 8 decades. Straight Talk (1992)Pour one out for the radio gals here. Straight Talk focuses on Shirlee Kenyon, played by Dolly Parton, a small town girl who moves to Chicago for a fresh start. Shirlee by sheer accident is mistaken for a psychologist and ends up behind the mic of a call-in radio show. Turns out she's a natural, but is pressured to maintain her doctor persona by the radio station. When a reporter gets suspicious, Shirlee's career threatens to come crashing down around her. Watch Straight Talk to find out what happens! Make sure you watch all the end credits on this one!Hannah Montana Season 2 Episode 20 “I Will Always Loathe You”“I Will Always Loathe You” from Hannah Montana is the second of Dolly's four appearances as Miley Stewart's godmother in this Disney Channel original series. Fun fact: Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus' real-life godmother. This episode is notable because Dolly gets to go head-to-head with comedy genius Vicki Lawrence, who plays Miley's Mamaw Ruthie. There's great comedy and great music in this episode of this family-friendly TV series. Joyful Noise (2012)Showcasing Dolly's musical prowess and ability to share the spotlight is her final theatrical film appearance, Joyful Noise. Starring alongside Queen Latifah, KeKe Palmer, Kris Kristofferson, Dexter Darden, Courtney B. Vance, Jesse L. Martin, and Angela Grovey, this film tells the story of two headstrong women, G. G. Sparrow (Dolly Parton) and Vi Rose Hill (Queen Latifah) who are at odds over the direction of their small town church choir. The choir is about to face off against some tough contenders in the upcoming national church choir competition. Can they work out their differences by the time they hit the big stage? You'll have to watch and find out! Designing Women Season 4 Episodes 13 & 14 “The First Day of the Last Decade of the Entire Twentieth Century Parts 1 & 2”This two-parter from Designing Women will make you laugh and cry. Charlene is close to her due date and nervous about motherhood. After having a dream featuring her “Guardian Movie Star” Dolly Parton, Charlene goes into labor. This episode of Designing Women is perhaps one of the series funniest, but also most poignant, especially now that Dolly has left us. Grab some tissues and your bestie for this one.If you want to hear more about Dolly's film work, check out my coverage of 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias in my “Wonder Women” episode. Dolly Parton left some sparkly shoes for us to fill. May we all take a little bit of her kindness, generosity, and good humor with us as we go. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Welcome to The Other Side of Midnight with Walter Sterling, where the late-night airwaves belong to the nocturnal, the highly creative, and the beautifully disorganized. In this mind-bending hour, Walter pays tribute to the legendary, multi-layered life of Dolly Parton—before diving headfirst down one of the wildest rabbit holes in radio history with psychic medium Dr. Linda Salvin. From bizarre claims of a secret Freemason upbringing to Miley Cyrus and a shocking, ritualistic Illuminati conspiracy, no topic is too extreme for the late-night misfits. Just as the darkness threatens to consume the studio, Walter and Dr. Salvin pivot to the comforting light of the spiritual realm, discussing the psychic gifts of autistic children, angelic visitations, and sweet messages from deceased loved ones.

Jim Hill and Lauren Hersey remember Dolly Parton by exploring her long and surprisingly deep connection to Disney. Jim recounts the ambitious Feature Animation Florida project that nearly gave Dolly a starring role in a hand-drawn/CG hybrid set in Appalachia, variously known as My Peoples, Angel and Her No Good Sister, and A Few Good Ghosts. They also look back at Dolly's appearances with Disney, her relationship with Miley Cyrus, the growth of Dollywood and the Imagination Library, and Jim's own conversation with the country music legend. HIGHLIGHTS • How Dolly Parton became Miley Cyrus's Aunt Dolly on Hannah Montana. • Dolly's Disney connection stretching back to Walt Disney World's 15th anniversary celebration. • The story behind Barry Cook's abandoned Feature Animation Florida project My Peoples. • Why Disney paired traditional human animation with CG Appalachian folk-art characters. • The all-star voice cast that included Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, Ashley Judd, Travis Tritt, Hal Holbrook, and more. • How the project evolved through titles including Elgin's Peoples, Once in a Blue Moon, Angel and Her No Good Sister, and A Few Good Ghosts. • Michael Eisner's enthusiastic reaction shortly before Disney ultimately shut the project down. • How changing attitudes toward hand-drawn animation and Disney's strained relationship with Pixar helped bring the film - and Feature Animation Florida - to an end. • Jim remembers interviewing Dolly about the Imagination Library and asking her about the Disney movie that never made it to theaters. The world is mourning the loss of country music legend, actor, and philanthropist Dolly Parton, who has passed away in Nashville at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer. In this special tribute episode of The Quicky, we celebrate the extraordinary life, sharp business acumen, and generous spirit of an icon who brought light to generations. In this episode, you'll learn: The surprising alternative currency her family used to pay the local doctor on the day she was born, long before she built a multi-million-dollar empire. Why she boldly turned down Elvis Presley over one of her biggest songs—and how that single decision reshaped music history for future generations of artists. The staggering scale of her quiet philanthropic work, from donating millions of books to funding major medical breakthroughs behind the scenes. The secret track locked away at Dollywood that no one is allowed to hear yet, and the massive collection of unreleased music she left behind. We're joined by Cameron Adams, Australia's leading music journalist, who reflects on meeting Dolly at her Nashville compound and breaks down why she was perhaps "the last person on Earth that everyone loved." Also in today's headlines: Why Commissioner Virginia Bell has requested a short delay for the Anti-Semitism Royal Commission's final report, and the solemn anniversary the move aims to respect. The proposed green energy rules for massive new AI data centres, and why key state leaders are already pushing back against Anthony Albanese.
