Throughout history, when nations have turned from God, He has raised men to try to bring them back. The Prophets of the Old Testament, the Apostles of the New Testament, and ultimately Jesus—all performed this role. These men are the Tough Guys of the Bible. Where did they get their courage? What are their secrets? What can we learn from them to become tougher? That's our focus—this week on The Land and the Book.Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/landandthebookSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Yesterday, the Canadian writer Diane Francis argued that Donald Trump should consider Xi Jinping's China a competitor rather than an enemy. Perhaps. But in this zero-sum “competition” between Trump and Xi for top tough guy, there can only be one winner. As Xi Jinping's father's biographer, Joseph Torigian explains, Xi had a brutally harsh upbringing. In his new book about Xi's father, Xi Zhongxun, Torigian explains that it was a childhood descent from privileged son of a communist party aristocrat to utter poverty, political exile and literal homelessness. That's the kind of tough guy that our self-styled “tough guy” President is competing with in today's Hobbesian bipolar world of international politics. I'm pretty sure that only one of these tough guys will come out on top. And it won't be the pampered middle son of a real-estate mogul from Queens.1. Xi Jinping's "Toughness" is Genuine, Not PerformativeUnlike privileged leaders who talk tough, Xi was forged by real hardship - his father was purged five times, spent 16 years in political exile, and Xi himself experienced homelessness, street battles, and rural exile. This created authentic resilience, not manufactured bravado.2. China's System Remains Dangerously Leader-DependentDespite assumptions about "collective leadership," Chinese politics never escaped the strongman model. Even Deng Xiaoping, supposedly constrained by colleagues, made unilateral decisions like Tiananmen. Xi isn't breaking the system - he's following its core logic that only a powerful "core" leader can hold China together.3. Taiwan is Personal, Not Just Political for XiHis father Xi Zhongxun was the party's leading "United Front" strategist who handled Taiwan relations in the 1980s through secret back-channels. For Xi, Taiwan represents both unfinished family business and his promise not to be "the one to lose" Chinese territory bequeathed by ancestors.4. Xi's Strategy is Patience, Not RecklessnessGrowing up watching his father navigate purges taught Xi when to act and when to "bide his time." Unlike Putin's sledgehammer approach, Xi moves "deliberately and competitively, but cautiously" - preferring to win without fighting rather than risk catastrophic failure.5. The Party's Biggest Fear is Losing the Next GenerationXi obsesses over whether young Chinese will remain loyal to the revolutionary cause without experiencing the hardship that dedicated his generation. With property crashes and youth unemployment, he's trying to recreate commitment through "national sacrifice" narratives - but it's unclear if this will work on a generation that expects prosperity, not suffering.1. Plus, signs of resistance from Harvard, independent veterans, and the surprising impact of punching the bully in the nose. From Charlie Syke's To The Contrary Podcast: Paul Rieckhoff: Why Hegseth Has to Go Pity the poor parodists. Mike Giardina has spent decades grinding.Being tough. Gritty — in the U.S. Navy, as an Operations Specialist 2nd Class. As a high-level CrossFit athlete and Seminar Staff Flowmaster. And as a survivor of trauma. He'd grown up dodging the shrapnel of his father's explosive outbursts, using drugs to cope. He watched friends overdose around him. And after he left the Navy in 2009 — while dealing with the shock of reentry into civilian life — his father killed himself. Mike found the body. Fourteen years later, his sister followed suit. At a retreat organized by the Heroic Hearts Project, Mike and other veterans stepped back into their traumas through a supervised psilocybin mushroom ceremony.“I was faced with an extremely concentrated experience of fear,” he says. The experience led him to a profound realization: “The tiny bits of fear that I feel daily, that force me to keep my walls up and protect myself and keep tension within the body — it fucking hit me in the face. Hard,” he says.“And the only way I could get through that fear to the other side was by learning how to let go.” In this episode of the Infinitely Scalable podcast, a host of self-proclaimed recovering “alphas” — win-at-all-costs tough guys obsessed with dominance in the gym and in life — talk about finding a more real kind of strength. The kind of strength that comes with vulnerability. “The shames and the traumas and the embarrassments… we'll bring them with us in so many different ways,” says co-host Tony Ronchi. “At some point, you've got to actually go back to the root to figure out why those things are the way that they are.” Co-host and CrossFit Seminar Staff member Andrew Charlesworth agrees. “The most alpha thing you can do is talk like this to other dudes,” he says.Listen in as the guys share glimpses of their own journeys and how their definition of success has shifted over time. “My metrics of success now are the relationships that I continue to strengthen with my loved ones and my friends,” Mike says. “That's the kind of stuff that really is important to me now.” 60 Minutes Overtime: Veteran faces childhood trauma on psychedelic journey: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/veteran-faces-childhood-trauma-on-psychedelic-journey-60-minutes/Heroic Hearts Project: https://heroicheartsproject.org/---Infinitely Scalable Podcast: Helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and humans everywhere find freedom. In this two-part episode, Keith shares the first part of his story. Growing up as a child of color, Keith learned early on what was and wasn't acceptable to express around his family and friends, especially the men and boys. While the women in his life supported his artistic side and sensitivity, Keith feared being labeled as weak or ridiculed by the men. His culture taught him that toughness and strength were the key qualities of being a "real" man.As a result, Keith struggled with his emotions in his marriage. He longed for a deeper connection with his wife, but nothing he'd been taught from tough-guy culture seemed to work. Feelings of confusion and resentment grew, and he felt rejected and unwanted. When his wife tried to express her wants and needs, he couldn't hear her without becoming very defensive. After finding Janna's work, Keith begins to unpack what he has learned to make sense of his jumbled emotions and find the real connection he was seeking.Janna's new Wanting It More Foundations self-paced course for women is open for registration. The next round of Doing It Together runs June/July 2025. Tough Guys was a Phelps family household favourite in the late 1980's and this week we take a look back at a movie long since forgotten. Tough Guys brought together two Hollywood legends, Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster, marking their seventh on-screen collaboration and injecting star power into this comedy crime caper. Directed by Jeff Kanew, who had worked with Douglas on Eddie Macon's Run, the film aimed to blend comedy and nostalgia with action. Set against the backdrop of the rapidly changing 1980s, the production team leaned into the contrast between the golden age of Hollywood and the modern era, using this as a thematic anchor. Filming primarily took place in Los Angeles, utilizing both urban settings and iconic locations to underscore the characters' struggle to adapt to contemporary life. The film was produced by Touchstone Pictures, a subsidiary of Disney, which aimed to target a slightly more mature audience with its blend of lighthearted humor and action. Douglas and Lancaster, already familiar with each other's rhythms and dynamics, brought a natural chemistry to their roles, making their performances one of the film's standout elements. Composer James Newton Howard provided a score that balanced upbeat, jazzy tunes with more sentimental pieces to reflect the characters' journey. This movie was a fond farewell to the screen partnership of Douglas and Lancaster, celebrating their enduring legacy in cinema. Struggling to adjust to the modern world of the 1980s, the duo quickly realise that society has moved on without them, and their old-school ways no longer fit in. Despite their attempts to go straight, the allure of one final heist proves irresistible as they plot to steal the same train they hijacked decades ago. Meanwhile, a relentless parole officer and their old nemesis, now a retired police officer, are hot on their trail. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Stigall believes one of the most dangerous of today's Democrats hit the DNC stage last night - Gov. Tim Walz. Invoking his time as a "coach" of football is very intentional. Salena Zito joins the show to explain whether that's landing with voters as they watch this convention this week. The Heritage Foundation economist EJ Antoni combs over the jobs revision yesterday - down 800K jobs - and just what it says about the overall health of the economy. Plus, Stigall lays out the case that you don't have to like conservatism, but challenges you to point out the "lies" in it. Is there anything Democrats are explaining or being honest about this week other than their commitment to abortion? Today's show is a pretty compelling argument. -For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPodListen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
