This weekend was OCRWC in Mammoth Lakes, CA and you will totally hear about that ... next week when I have time to schedule an interview with an athlete but it is Tuesday and people are still traveling home! Instead we finally had Kevin "The Mudman" LaPlatney, on the show who has been in the sport since 2010 and has seen a lot of events come and go during his time living on Long Island. He owned Obstacle Athletics which was a well known OCR gym in the area for many years, and continues to be a prominent member in the northeast OCR community. We discuss his favorite events over the years, his love of ultras, being a dad, his thoughts on the changes in the sport, the fact that OCR is not dead yet, and more! 0:00 – 5:11 – Intro 5:11 – 9:39 – Quick News 9:39 – 10:18 – Content Preface 10:18 - 1:12:54 - Kevin LaPlatney Interview 1:12:54 - End – Outro Next weekend we will hopefully have an athlete on to talk about OCRWC or cover Naticook Challenge or BoldrDash's Doggie Dash! ____ News Stories: Rose Wetzel's Dad Spartan 2025 US National Series WTM Community Dinner Matt Caroll and Cassandra (Ohman) Caroll Baby's 1st Birthday Spartan Nashville Super Podiums OCRWC 3K Podiums: Men and Women OCRWC 15K Podiums: Women and Men Portopotty Mile Secret Link $1,000,000 Kiss Secret Link Calisthenics Gravity Secret Link Undercover Homeless Secret Link Llama Groomsman Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 275. With US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signalling interest rate cuts ahead, the US dollar's likely to weaken with the Kiwi dollar rising against it, Imre Speizer, Head of NZ Markets Strategy at Westpac Institutional Bank, says.Speaking in a new episode of the Of Interest podcast, Speizer says although the expected central bank interest rate trajectory is very similar in NZ and the US over the next 12 months, financial markets will focus much more on the US."If the two racehorses go neck and neck, that should probably be neutral for the Kiwi dollar. [But] I don't think it will be, because the market will put a lot more importance on the US side of things. So even though the yield spread between New Zealand rates and US rates might not move too much, just the fact that the Fed is cutting aggressively will actually weigh on the broader US dollar," Speizer says."So you'll get the market selling the US dollar against all of the major G10 currencies and that will have a ripple effect into the Kiwi-US exchange rate... And therefore, if we see that US dollar weakening, which is our view over the next few quarters, you should see the Kiwi-US, all things equal, rising a bit."Speizer also expects local swap rates, already down significantly over the last couple of months, to continue falling."The swap rates are going to fall a bit further over the next few quarters, and that's simply mechanical. So even if views around the economy don't change, the markets have already priced in this whole easing cycle. So think of it as they're priced in, they know the Official Cash Rate is 5.25% today. They believe it'll be below 5% by the end of the year. And in a year's time, into the threes [3% range], that's already priced in," Speizer says."So as you move forward in time, those high OCRs drop out of the calculation of a swap rate and you just mechanically end up with a lower rate. So even if nothing in the world changed, you would see, for example, that two year swap rate moving from its current rate of about 3.85% down towards somewhere in the lower threes over time. So that's just time and the mathematics doing its work. It's not really the market moving as such.""Swap rates are very important in the New Zealand financial markets. They're arguably the most important interest rate instrument. Whatever swap rates do, other interest rates will follow. So, for example, if your two year swap rate went up by 100 basis points, you would find mortgage rates following suit, other business lending rates, bond yields, pretty much anything. They are the foundation of all interest rates in New Zealand. And the swap rates themselves are constructed by expectations of the OCR mostly," says Speizer. In the podcast audio he also talks about what in Powell's Jackson Hole comments surprised financial markets, what to watch ahead of September's Federal Open Markets Committee meeting, OCR market expectations, what the yield curve is telling us at the moment, how commodities might start to exert more influence on exchange rates, the NZ government bond market following the issuing last week of a $6 billion bond that attracted record interest of $22.7 billion, the yen carry trade, Australia, China, geopolitical risk, and where he sees the NZ dollar at year's end.

On Today's episode Pretty Mike talks with Jeremy "Captain" Kaufmann about his company Core Events. They run 4 in person events and 4 virtual events annually and the Double Down bicycling challenge starts July 1st. Get signed up. It's going to be lots of fun. https://www.corefitnesspdx.com/Mike and Jeremy also spend a lot of time talking about the state of OCR in the PNW. With the nationals all combining over the last few years and pulling out of the PNW we are left without OCR. Not including Terrain Race or their other companies we have less than a dozen OCRs in the Seattle Portland area of which 3 are national brands. Spartan has dropped Portland, Tough Mudder failed to deliver Portland last year and backed out of Portland going forward, Rugged Maniac stopped doing Seattle before covid and doesn't appear to be coming back. So we have one Trifecta weekend in Monroe Wa, one Tough Mudder event in Black Diamond WA, and one Rugged Maniac in Portland. So, it's up to us all to support all the local OCRs and event companies like Core Events to help grow a local community and not rely on the nationals that all appear to be abandoning the PNW. Again, sign up for these events. We need more. https://www.corefitnesspdx.com/www.BeastNetPod.com Music Info: https://beastnetpod.com/music #beastnetpod #OCRBuddy #OCRStrong #teamnuun #madetougher #defineyourlegacy #raceLOCAL --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beastnetpod/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beastnetpod/support
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.14.536950v1?rss=1 Authors: Merrill, C. B., Titos, I., Pabon, M. A., Montgomery, A. B., Rodan, A. R., Rothenfluh, A. Abstract: The Drosophila brain contains tens of thousands of distinct cell types. Thousands of different transgenic lines reproducibly target specific neuron subsets, yet most still express in several cell types. Furthermore, most lines were developed without a priori knowledge of where the transgenes would be expressed. To aid in the development of cell type-specific tools for neuronal identification and manipulation, we developed an iterative assay for transposase-accessible chromatin (ATAC) approach. Open chromatin regions (OCRs) enriched in neurons, compared to whole bodies, drove transgene expression preferentially in subsets of neurons. A second round of ATAC-seq from these specific neuron subsets revealed additional enriched OCR2s that further restricted transgene expression within the chosen neuron subset. This approach allows for continued refinement of transgene expression, and we used it to identify neurons relevant for sleep behavior. Furthermore, this approach is widely applicable to other cell types and to other organisms. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC
Other Conversational Responses (OCRs) are all the ways people tend to respond that are not empathy. In this Episode, Dr. B shares about a recent situation where someone was upset and all the folks around her responded in those OCRs. Dr. B and Heather discuss why this was not connecting and the unconscious fallout that often occurs from these habitual ways of responding.

After hearing that Bonefrog's event season was going to wrap up after their Charlemont, MA and Stanhope, NJ events this year Mike blocked off the weekend for the New Jersey event and registered for the golden trident course! Bonefrog has been around for a while and offers a unique military feel to their course and festival area that other races do not. However, due to low registration numbers (which most OCRs are currently dealing with) and high prices to put on events (which everyone is dealing with), they announced that they will be pausing their events until things go back to normal. Originally Katelyn was supposed to cover the event as media as Mike ran 3 laps of the course to earn his trident medal but she was needed as a last minute volunteer at bag check. Due to this, all interviews were done after Mike had been thrashed on the course by the 60 obstacles in 9 miles. We are wishing the staff and crew of Bonefrog luck on getting back on their feet, be sure to follow along for updates and support these struggling races! 0:00 - 2:23 - Intro 2:23 - 10:19 - Quick News 10:19 - 11:31 - Content Preface 11:31 - 20:22 - Interviews with Ainsley Rogers (Bonefrog's registration director), Alyssa from Strong Together, and Reggie Walker 20:22 - 36:39 - Interviews with Brian Carney (owner of Bonefrog), and Amine Dib (founder of Hannibal Race) 36:39 - 44:13 - Gator Ride, audio from dips, burpees, and pull ups, as well as a volunteer rant 44:13 - 1:01:04 - Mike and Katelyn event recap 1:01:04 - End - Outro ____ News Stories: Asheville Spartan Venue Final Update Heidi Williams Back Surgery Recovery Ohio Savage Podiums: Men and Women Savage Series Final Top 10 AT&T Spartan Stadium Results Spartan Ohio Beast Results Spartan Ohio Super Results Spartan Ohio Sprint Results Spartan Montreal Beast Results Spartan Montreal Ultra Results Spartan Montreal Super Results Spartan Montreal Sprint Results Spartan North American Series Leaderboard: Men and Women Bonefrog Results Chaos Secret Link Duck Secret Link Conservation Secret Link Duckling Secret Link Abandoned Track Secret Link Annoying Secret Link GOAT Poetry Secret Link Shady Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 20. The 1st Bulldog Challenge in 3 years! This local 10k obstacle race has been a challenge I've done 4 times previously and had high hopes for its return this year. Did it live up to the hype? What is it? How did my amazing team do? And more. Spoiler... it wasn't like the previous 4 times I've done this. Better? Worst? Listen and find out! Do you do OCRs? It's pretty clear that OCR has taken a massive hit due to the outbreak of COVID back in 2020 but many were optimistic about a strong return after. Unfortunately, things still aren't looking much better with low turnouts at many events, race brands rapidly downsizing, and from what we and other friends can vouch for a large hit to podcast listeners. Robb McCoy from FIT Challenge has won awards from Best of OCR for his role as a race director, his race itself, and for the unique obstacles that are featured in them! Yet due to the effect of low registrations, it is looking like this almost decade old OCR company will be coming to an end in 2023. We had him on to talk about what hs considered going into making this decision, what he believes it means for the sport of OCR, and his plans moving forward! Stoke Shed's Bobby Ross joins Evan Perperis to add some commentary to his book "Ultra-OCR Man: From Special Forces Soldier to Record Setting OCR Athlete". If you don't own the book, don't worry you can still listen to the podcast and get a lot of great information, however, it works best when used in conjunction with the book (available in hard copy, digital or audiobook, available here: https://www.teamstrengthspeed.com/ultra-ocr-man ). This episode cover chapters 10 and 11 including OCR America 2016 when Evan attempting to run a marathon of obstacles at seven different venues in seven different days. For the second half of the episode Bobby and Evan talk Ultra-OCR Grand Slam, attempting to do well at every 24 hour OCR in the USA. Head over and check out Bobby Ross at www.StokeShed.com
After a much too long break from the last episode, I'm back with a jammed show. 2021 is here and hopefully, we see some OCRs get going more and more. In this episode, I share my strategy for planning out my 2021 race season. If you need help laying it out, make sure you check out the Venga CBD's training calendar. Do you use HIIT for your OCR training? Most miss the mark when they are using intervals. I discuss the point behind why you should use interval training and where so many go wrong. In my research review, I share really interesting research on a jumping test that can predict your running speed. If you want to make the most out of your training to improve your running speed, you will want to listen to this one. And finally, I interview Dr. Brianne Showman from Get Your Fix Physical Therapy. Brianne has a unique background as a therapist and a performance coach, so I was excited to get her on. We discussed some of the common areas that OCR athletes go wrong leading to an increased risk of injuries. I particularly enjoyed the topic of racing versus training and how these should look different. Brianne also shared some of her insight on barefoot training explaining how and how not to incorporate it. Full show notes at www.ocrunderground.com/episode-76

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.27.358218v1?rss=1 Authors: Shen, Y., Chen, L.-L., Gao, J. Abstract: Chromatin accessibility is a highly informative structural feature for understanding gene transcription regulation because it indicates the degree to which nuclear macromolecules such as proteins and RNA can access chromosomal DNA. Studies show that chromatin accessibility is highly dynamic during stress response, stimulus response, and developmental transition. Moreover, physical access to chromosomal DNA in eukaryotes is highly cell-specific. Therefore, current technologies such as DNase-seq, ATAC-seq, and FAIRE-seq reveal only a portion of the open chromatin regions (OCRs) present in a given species. Thus, the genome-wide distribution of OCRs remains unknown. In this study, we developed a bioinformatics tool called CharPlant for the de novo prediction of chromatin accessible regions in plant genomes. To develop this tool, we constructed a three-layer convolutional neural network (CNN) and subsequently trained the CNN using DNase-seq and ATAC-seq datasets of four plant species. The model simultaneously learns the sequence motifs and regulatory logics, which are jointly used to determine DNA accessibility. All of these steps are integrated into CharPlant, which can be run using a simple command line. The results of data analysis using CharPlant in this study demonstrate its prediction power and computational efficiency. To our knowledge, CharPlant is the first de novo prediction tool that can identify potential OCRs in the whole genome. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.27.356733v1?rss=1 Authors: Wirthlin, M. E., Kaplow, I. M., Lawler, A. J., He, J., Phan, B. N., Brown, A. R., Stauffer, W. R., Pfenning, A. R. Abstract: In mammals, fine motor control is essential for skilled behavior, and is subserved by specialized subdivisions of the primary motor cortex (M1) and other components of the brain's motor circuitry. We profiled the epigenomic state of several components of the Rhesus macaque motor system, including subdivisions of M1 corresponding to hand and orofacial control. We compared this to open chromatin data from M1 in rat, mouse, and human. We found broad similarities as well as unique specializations in open chromatin regions (OCRs) between M1 subdivisions and other brain regions, as well as species- and lineage-specific differences reflecting their evolutionary histories. By distinguishing shared mammalian M1 OCRs from primate- and human-specific specializations, we highlight gene regulatory programs that could subserve the evolution of skilled motor behaviors such as speech and tool use. Let me set a scene for you: It was a little while back, Spartan and everyone was gearing up for the 2020 race season. BeastNet invited Ashley Heller on the show(Episode 174) to talk about what looked to be a big season for her. Hammer and her had a great conversation about expectations and aspirations. And then, COVID19 shuts down the whole world. No Spartans, no Gyms, no OCRs. Even with all that Ashley continued training and working towards better health since there were no races. Mike and Ashley talk about that, home gyms and more. If you follow us on FaceBook you saw a couple weeks ago a pretty gruesome photo from a hit and run that sent Ashley to the hospital. Mike and Ashley discuss the accident and the feelings involved. But, even being run down by a car can't slow Ashley down, she's a survivor, after a little healing shes back in action. In this episode we chat with one of OCRs most successful and inspirational power couples, Jade and Brendan Hunt. They have been competing in the sport since 2013 and have amassed a total of 66 elite Spartan podiums between them - we’ll find out during the episode who has the most of these out of the two! They live in Sydney Australia but outside of their home country have competed in Asia, Europe and the U.S. On this worldwide journey are are the only couple to have podiumed in two different countries on the same weekend - they very much see the sport as an integral part of their lives. We hear about their OCR journey, how they found each other, what motivates them, who inspires them and how they have maintained focus during the setbacks of injuries and now with the current COVID-19 situation.
Today Mike talks with Amber Johnston, she's part of the BROCR team and a Machete Madness Pro athlete. We had her on back, way back 204 episodes ago on Episode 4. Much has changed, we last spoke with her she had just moved to Alaska, now three years later she is in Texas and running OCRs down there. Recently before the shutdown she won BoneFrog and has continued training during the pandemic. They also talk home Gyms, scuba diving, and more. Facebook - Amber Johnston and IG - @ajohnstonocr Surviving the pandemic takes social contact. We created the Survivors group as a way for you to connect. It's a common theme with many Spartans out there, At this point in your life you have already Survived the worst thing you have lived through. You are a Survivor. Jeremy Ogle joins us today and we throw a bunch of listener questions his way and we also discuss his nude photo shoot, the impacts of cancelled events, media outlets missing some major parts of his story, impacts of discussing severe depression, improving the adaptive community, if he’ll ever settle down, competing, and a bunch more. Jeremy Ogle is an Athlete, speaker, and founder of You Adapt. More about Jeremy Ogle For Jeremy Ogle, failure was not an option for him. When his daughter came along and once she was placed in his arm all his fears went away. Jeremy knew he had to be strong for her and himself. Jeremy has earned countless medals in multiple sports, including Adaptive CrossFit, OCRs, Running Comps, and U.S. Paralympic Nationals and has the pleasure of being a motivational speaker. Jeremy states, "At the end of the day medals are just medals - material things. The real rewarding part of my journey is seeing my daughter and other people’s faces light up when they see me finish a race that was said to be impossible for someone with a disability. At that moment, I can see a light bulb turning on in their mind, illuminating the endless possibilities of what they can accomplish, too. I am proving to them that anyone can achieve anything by believing in it and working hard for it. I do this for them.” Jeremy lives to show others that "when life presents you with a challenge, You Adapt.” https://www.instagram.com/armsolo_/ https://www.instagram.com/youadapt/ https://www.facebook.com/youadapt/ https://www.facebook.com/arm.solo This episode is brought to you by Living Adaptive with Scott Davidson. Randy Nantz is a Green Beret (retired) that was wounded in combat. He’s an elite athlete receiving notice with his involvement in adventure sports, OCRs, etc. and is one of the more well known ATF grads. Randy Nantz has managed and supports various veteran and adaptive organizations since injury. Note this, Randy Nantz is one of the bright lights of the adaptive community. He’s one of my favorite interviews. I love being around Nantz and I believe his story will shed some light as to why Nantz is very beloved. Today Pretty Mike talks with "tiny but MIGHTY" Kate West. They talk about what got her into OCR, starting with soccer and moving on to running. She tlaks about how she passes the time with "dad" jokes and having fun trailing and lifting. This episode they spend a lot of time talking about #raceLOCAL in the Midwest and how these smaller family run OCRs are what got her hooked into the sport before she hit the Spartan circuit. They also touch on running AG and her transitioning into elite in 2020. With her being 4'11.25" many of the obstacles are huge by comparison but she tackles them and hopes to inspire more people to give it a shot. This episode again ties in to #raceLOCAL and #runLOCAL where we talk about running smaller independent races. Even though Kate is in the Midwest you can join her in this virtual challenge. You’ll hear from the latest and now former Tough Mudder (TM) CEO Kyle McLaughlin. This is perhaps Kyle’s last interview prior to departing TM. I don’t have details to share as to why Kyle left Tough Mudder, but I suggest following our friends over at Obstacle Racing Media (links below) for up-to-date information regarding TM, Spartan, and OCRs in general. In this interview you will find a very sincere TM CEO looking to bring TM in a different direction than past years. Kyle was totally cool to talk with behind the scenes, he’s real and approachable. I don’t know the direction of TM now because TM is facing potentially involuntary bankruptcy and this could include getting acquired by our friends at Spartan Race. Anyways, you can hear Kyle McLaughlin talk about: Athletes that grab the attention of TM and the TM mission going into 2020 Para athletes in TM and the potentials Kyle tips his hat to Spartan for pushing OCRs towards the olympics and carrying the torch for the structured OCR competitions. Kyle explains the difference between Spartan and TM What Kyle views as the power of the TM OCR community TM offers a place for therapy and a realm to help others Find https://www.instagram.com/obstacleracingmedia/ https://www.facebook.com/ObstacleMedia/ https://obstacleracingmedia.com https://toughmudder.com https://www.instagram.com/tough_mudder/ https://www.facebook.com/toughmudder/ https://twitter.com/ToughMudder Personalities mention in this interview: Jesi Stracham https://www.instagram.com/jesistracham/?hl=en Jamie Gane https://www.instagram.com/jamieganeadaptiveathlete/?hl=en Jeremy Ogle https://www.instagram.com/armsolo_/?hl=en This episode is brought to you by Living Adaptive with Scott Davidson. Here’s that Run Ragged recap we promised- we’re visited by the one and only Joe Nuara, 3rd place finisher. Or 2nd to last DNF, whatever. We go deep inside Joe’s brain to see what it takes to go hour after hour after hour (29 to be exact) and what the heart of a warrior looks like- Joe gives us a really important “why” to the whole experience. He talks about his 100-mile experience from a few years back, flipping burgers with none other than #hundojoe at the NJ 3-Day. We also learn the ins-and-outs of Obstacle Course Racing life, as Joe is an elite competitor not only at ultras but also at OCRs. We also hear from the RDs perspective as Brian and Stacey not only battled sleep but the real fight- having access to unlimited Oreos and Mountain Dew (allegedly). What is it like to direct Connecticut’s premier Last Person Standing event? Find out here. Mad props to woodworking artist extraordinaire Stefan Rodriguez- that winner's trophy is the truth. We vaguely visit BleesterGate and skim over #ultradrama, because who gives a shit? Evil Becky is back and she is hilarious as she informs us that she’s all caught up on past CULTRA episodes. Finally we say goodbye to the incomparable Stacey Clark as she readies herself to move to Fort Collins, Colorado next week. It’s an action-packed episode you won’t want to miss. Welcome to our first ever listener question episode! Thanks to Deb for this intriguing idea. 1:00 Tom Shippey, sources 1:20 Hi Deb! 1:37 Orc clans - warlike 1:50 Sauron and Morgoth found ways to unite them. 2:00 Nature of evil 2:30 People asked Tolkien this very question! Specifically Peter Hastings, the manager of the Newman Catholic Bookshop. 2:50 Naturally bad, but not irredeemably bad. 3:20 Who is Tom Shippey? 4:20 Orcs made by Morgoth 4:30 Evil can’t create, can only corrupt. 5:00 Morgoth made orcs in mockery of the elves and Eru. 5:15 It’s an example of subverting God’s will. 5:30 Orcs in other literature are generally derived from Tolkien (discussion of Bright). 7:10 Orcs and loyalty. See Tom Shippey’s Orcs, Wraiths, and Wights. Orcs show knowledge of good and evil. 7:38 “Regular Elvish Trick” 8:00 Elvish = bad, orcs are the opposite of elves. 8:20 Dan thought orcs would have opposite morals but they don’t. 8:40 Elves can be bad too, just look at Fëanor (or Eöl). 8:50 Orcs are the infantry of the old war against the Vala and the elves in the first age. 9:18 Morgoth put his power into his works, the evil dilutes. 9:40 Erica’s amazing hand gestures. 9:50 Morgoth’s diluted evil - this idea has spread to other fantasy. 10:14 The dilution of evil is also dilution of control, so Sauron has a harder time controlling them than Morgoth did. 10:20 Tolkien tossed around the idea of a hive mind, but never really settled on it. They misbehave. 10:40 Ocrs that were elves vs. orcs that were men? 11:00 Orcs vs. goblins - idea for future research for Erica! Or, if you know, please tell us where Erica can look it up! 11:20 Goblins/elves = Moria, Orcs/men = Mordor? (upon further consideration, Erica doesn’t think this part is terribly likely because both of those places are extremely far East considering when orcs came into being) 12:10 We solved everything! Wait… not in any way… 12:27 Melkor corrupted orcs and they serve him out of fear. 12:47 The alternative is unpleasant 13:00 Born, not manufactured like the goo chamber in Orthanc in the movies. 14:00 Initial group created in the first age and the rest descended from them. 14:20 Is the goo chamber in Orthanc corruption? (Erica needs to watch the special features again) 14:54 Could there be a good orc? Yes. Not irredeemable. 15:00 It’s important to Tolkien to have redemption as an option. 15:24 Catholic background - post-fall beings with free will 15:50 Nothing can be created without Eru Tokien’s letters p 195 - “by accepting or tolerating their making… orcs would become part of the World, which is God’s and ultimately good”. 16:28 Orcs know good and evil so they MUST be redeemable. 16:40 Only Eru could create things with independent thought 17:05 Eru wouldn’t sanction Melkor’s works like he did Aulë’s. 17:24 Corruption isn’t inheritable 17:50 Don’t know about socialization of orcs. 18:00 Children of a warlike, violent life. Elite OCR athlete Ryan Kempson joins me this week to talk all about his win at the Spartan US National Series Super in Jacksonville last weekend, the series as a whole, the sport of OCR, and how he trains for such a long season. We start with Ryan giving me his background and how he got into OCR. We then dive into Jacksonville and Ryan break down how his race went and the competition. We discuss the new obstacles, and then dive into the topic of officiating at races, and how Ryan feels Spartan is doing in that respect. We talk about penalties, and the degree to which they should or perhaps shouldn't be penalized, especially when compared to other sports. Ryan then tells me about how he trains for such a long OCR season without burning out, and we talk about the diversity of the courses in Spartan's US National Series and how it may affect the competition. I ask Ryan about his race preferences, and he tells me more about other OCRs he has run and how they differ from Spartan. We end with Ryan sharing his goals and the races he's focusing on this year, and how consistency is key in the sport of OCR.

From March 28th to August 28th of this year, OCR competitor Ben Mitchell hiked the entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail, so I brought him on the show to talk all about his journey. Ben starts by introducing himself and how he got into OCRs, then tells me when and why he decided to hike the entire PCT. We talk about how long it took him to prepare, what it involved, and what he carried on him every day (and the lessons he learned about what not to carry). He tells me about his worst day he had out on the trail, and we talk about trail logistics. Ben also shares what food and nutrition he relied on throughout the months he was hiking, and tells me more about his itinerary and breaks, also known as "zero days". Ben also shares his favorite parts of the trail, and walks me through the different states and sections of the trail and their defining characteristics. Lastly, he tells me about how it felt to finish the trail, and talks about the lessons he learned and the biggest takeaways from the entire trip.

David starts by sharing how he got started in OCR and the creation of the British Military Fitness team, which leads us into a discussion about the evolution of OCR and the OCR scene in Europe and the UK. We discuss the importance of race brands finding a balance between accessibility for the general public and challenge for the competitive athletes, and how that affects the success of a race. We then talk about this year's OCR World Championships, and how it's new location in the UK will affect the competition. David also talks about his recent win at the Somaliland Marathon, and the difference between race mentality in marathons versus OCR. We're kicking off the new year by talking with Yancy Camp athlete and elite OCR competitor Morgan Mckay all about her win at the Spartan Ultra World Championships in Iceland. Morgan tells Heather all about the inaugural Ultra Championship race, from the overall format, to the penalties, the gear, the competition, and what she found to be the most challenging part. She also discusses how this race compares to other endurance OCRs, and what set this particular event apart. Morgan also talks about her medical DQ at World's Toughest Mudder, and coming back from that to win in Iceland. She and Heather discuss course safety as well, and how race companies handle it. They then discuss goals for 2018, what races (and goals) Morgan is focusing on, and what it is about endurance races that appeals so much to her and why she chooses to specialize in longer distances.

For the past several years, you’d be hard-pressed to scroll through your Facebook feed, especially in the summertime, without seeing some of your friends posting pictures of themselves at the finish line of a mud run or obstacle race. Events like the Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, and Tough Mudder have become well-known parts of the modern recreational scene. Many of you listening have probably done one yourself. But why exactly have obstacle races, known as OCRs, exploded in popularity in recent times? Why do millions of affluent suburbanites pay as much as $200 to have their bodies bruised and banged and sometimes subjected to extreme cold, electrical shocks, and even tear gas? My guest today has spent the past few years exploring that question and he’s made a documentary sharing the answers he’s found. His name is Scott Keneally and his documentary is called Rise of the Sufferfests. In today's show, Scott and I discuss how the little-known origins of obstacle racing can be traced to a farm in England, how enterprising businessmen turned that idea into a multi-billion dollar industry, and the cultural forces that have provided the soil for obstacle courses to grow so rapidly. We also discuss the criticism levied at obstacle racing and what Scott thinks the future holds for OCRs.
Heather talks to Scott Keneally, director and creator of the new documentary Rise of the Sufferfests. They talk about the film and what it took to create it, the deeper reasons why people run OCRs and why this sport has exploded in popularity, and Scott's personal experience with the world of OCR.

The week after this interview, he would finish 2nd at the Saturday Carolina Spartan Sprint. Then, Kaitlin Stein does her first interview for the podcast with Margaret Schlachter. If you have not heard by now. Hobie Call lost for the first time in any obstacle race less than half marathon distance. He was beaten by Hunter "The Sheriff" McIntyre at the Superhero Scramble Intimidator in Clermont, Florida on Saturday. With less than a mile to go, he was actually in 5th place before turning it on to finish 2nd. In today's episode, you will hear interviews with Hobie, Hunter, and David Magida. David placed 4th less than 30 seconds behind Hobie. They will all talk about how important swimming was at this race and how that race affected the future of OCR. I will then play my interview with Rachel Moraes. She is a mom, an english teacher, and part time college student. She runs marathons, OCRs, and ultras. We crossed paths online one day and I was excited to speak with her. This interview took place a few months ago, so I am glad to finally bring it to you.
