Paul touches on some of the basic concerns the Thessalonians had about those who sleep in Jesus. He doesn't answer all possible questions about those who have gone on before us, but he does tell us what we need to know and explains it in a way that can help us understand.
What is the rapture? When is it? Why is it? The what is not that hard, and neither is the why, but when has proved a little challenging. Students of this have come to different conclusions. There are reasons for all the views, but only one can be right. Let’s see if we can get close.

We don’t stop sharing the Good News with people once they become believers; that’s actually when we can talk about it even more!
All Saints Day often reminds us of the sadness, loss and mourning we experience when a loved one dies. While this is considered a normal response to death, there is a significant difference in the type of grief evidenced at funerals. In our text, Paul reminds us that mixed in with our sadness is our Christian hope. He speaks of a significant difference in grieving when he writes in the words of our text, "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope" (v 13). In other words, unlike the people of the world, believers in Christ, by contrast, grieve with hope

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Though there is much debate concerning the timing of the rapture, Paul’s purpose in this passage is less concerned with when it will take place but far more concerned that his words be comforting & assuring to a grief-stricken church. Though we will experience immense grief and pain with the loss of a loved one, our grief is anchored in the beautiful reminder that upon his return, Jesus will gather all of his children with him – we will live forever with Jesus and those we’ve lost in the Lord.
