With a rematch scheduled this Sunday, we figured a replay of one of our favorite episodes was in order.  From 2023 - Joining us for the first time is Erik Johanson, Philadelphia sports fanatic. In the last 5 months, Philly fans have gotten quite a bit of excitement with both the Phillies and the Eagles competing in championship games. We talk to Erik about how his love for Phladelphia and it's sports teams developed, and how it has become a thin place for him. And we explore one more important piece of Erik's story: his complicated relationship with his father and where Erik is left after his father's death last summer.

If I know deep inside that I can do it, without that I can logically prove it … I believe. And that might be for other people fanaticism. So deeper my belief for a positive outcome so better. What is if I believe the doctor is right that I have for instance terminal cancer? Then this belief will kill me. For instance, the doctors found out that the father in law from Antonie Robbins had a terminal brain tumor and would die soon. A. Robbins forbade the doctors to tell his father in law anything about his tumor. And so his father in law lived happily for years… After some years, a doctor told his father in law, he has a terminal brain tumor, the father in law died within 14 days. In this case, the father had the fanaticism to believe in the doctors and so he died. I had at least 6 times incurable diseases,- cured them all by myself. I was two times killed by doctors (clinical dad)… If I believe that every disease can be cured with the help of God, regardless what any stupid doctor is telling me, the disease can be healed. We need a good concept (how to cure our disease) in that we believe and with the faith in God we can cure every disease. A belief is always positive and a fanaticism is always negative. We need to believe in God and without demanding anything. So that God can choose (he will do it in any case). If we fanatic believe in God/Allah and sacrifice our life for the sake of a Religion leader we harm us, the believer in God, the society, and our family.  This never will work out. Fanaticism has always a negative outcome! What is if we believe in God; - that God knows it better for us and should decide for us. Through this belief in God, we get peace in our mind and don't demand things we could not get, even we have done everything. Because we can't calculate any outcome. We depend on so many things, that we even can fail in any way. Still, we are thankful for any outcome. Because everything is in the hands of God. And God knows it better. Through that, we gain trust and faith in God and can live a positive life. Even more, after some time we experience miracles because of our faith in God. And that discriminates a God believer from the rest of the world. Deep Faith in God is priceless and I think there exists nothing better. Fanaticism has never a positive outcome. And still, everybody has such fanaticism inside of us, that harms us.  Discover your negative beliefs or fanaticism that are inside of you.My Video: Is Belief = Fanaticism? https://youtu.be/ji_C9AiXttgMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.B/Is-Belief-Fanaticism.mp3

This is Part 2 of a two-part interview. This episode of Some Stutter, Luh! podcast continues the conversation with Daniel Allen Cox, exploring his journey as writer of “I Felt the End Before it Came: Memoirs of a Queer Ex-Jehovah's Witness.” and also a person who stutters. Daniel discusses his life experiences, including leaving the Jehovah's Witness community, his struggles with substance use, and finding his authentic self. Notes: Daniel discusses leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses, elaborating on the varied experiences of those who drift in and out of the religion. His journey was more definitive, marked by rejection due to his sexuality, which contrasts with others. He also critiques how certain groups, including Jehovah's Witnesses and Alcoholics Anonymous, use language to manipulate and control individuals, particularly through the concept of reliance on higher powers. He refers to “Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism” written by Amanda Montell to point out how different groups use cultish language. Initially hesitant to publicly read his work due to his stutter, Daniel overcame his fear with encouragement from friends, realizing that his authentic voice, including his stutter, is integral to his story. He prefers the term "queer" over "gay," as it better represents his identity and relationships. Daniel is touring his memoir, engaging in workshops, and editing books for others. He aims to continue writing, mentoring, and advocating for marginalized communities while merging activism with his art. “Those of us growing up in consumerist society, when confronted with a problem, our tendency is to add a whole bunch of cumbersome variables to the equation. So, if we're experiencing pain in our relationship, I'll speak for myself, every time we were really, really suffering and not doing well. It did not occur to me once to break up. I was like, you know what we need to do? We need to go on another vacation. Or we need to get another cat. Or we need to replace all our furniture. I don't regret any of my cats. But I was like, we need to add variables to the equation in order to fix this problem. Even though the much more efficient decision would have been maybe to scale back, reassess, take something away. And, I quote a study when talking about that subject, where participants were presented with a spatial puzzle involving colored blocks, and they could either solve the puzzle by adding or taking away colored blocks from this puzzle. The vast majority of participants opted for the much more overly complicated solution, which was to add a whole bunch of color blocks, whereas the much simpler but less intuitive solution would just be to take one single colored block away. We don't often think to take things away to solve a problem.” So says Amanda Montell, the author of the New York Times bestseller The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality, as well as Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism and Wordslut. Amanda is a linguistics major from NYU and all of her work centers around the way that words—and thoughts—shape our minds, and how our minds are permeable to other factors, whether it's the halo effect, confirmation bias, or Cult-like sensibilities.      For a cult to form, it takes a balance; a symmetry of circumstances and encounters for cults to find their footing, drawing both followers and leaders into their circle. For the followers, it's like standing alone on the edge of a cliff, feeling the weight of loneliness until a welcoming hand reaches out, promising unity and acceptance. The allure lies in never facing solitude again, even if it means abandoning reason and logic...jumping into something mysterious. As for the leaders, it's the pursuit of power, wealth, or maybe the deep impulse to destroy. Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalists and no purpose other than perhaps, destruction...  It was Friedrich Nietzsche who argued that nihilism and its corrosive effects would eventually destroy all moral, religious and metaphysical convictions and precipitate the greatest crisis in human history.  Is that time now?  We are going to review 5 types of the most well-known cults in human history.  Decades and times apart, and at the end, we will discuss possibly one of the most frightening modern-day cults, one that has yet to reach true destruction...   In 1982 I stood in front of a group of employees of the retail company I was running to tell them, "Who would have thought we'd reach a time when saying "please" and "thank you," "sir" and "ma'am" would be a competitive edge?" That was then. This is now. Superior customer service is rare. That means the opportunities are extraordinary! Seize the day. Abel seized the day. Here's his story, as posted on my Facebook profile. Abel with Schlotzsky's in Grapevine, Texas Schlotzsky's Grand Prairie, Texas Is Today's Customer Service HORROR Story (Small Hill Drive location) Rhonda placed an order via the app (something she's done with great frequency). Location: Grapevine, Texas. Problem: during checkout, the app encountered a problem with her saved credit card requiring that it be re-entered. Done. Order placed. Problem #2: during that payment problem evidently the order location changed from Grapevine to Grand Prairie. She didn't notice that until we were in the drive-through of the Grapevine location. She explained the problem and they politely said, "No problem. Just call them to get a refund and we'll make the sandwiches here." So we pulled into a parking spot to call Grand Prairie. She explained the problem and as they seemed to be helping her the connection went dead. I suspect they hung up on her (she was on the speakerphone). She dialed back. Explained it again, but this time it was a different person. "No, we've already made the sandwiches. No refund!" (Do this in the voice/tone of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld and you'll be dangerously close to the sound of this man on the phone). She asked for the manager. "I am the manager." I took the phone to ply my powers of persuasion but without success. The Sandwich Nazi wasn't going to bend an inch. This $22 transaction was more meaningful than a long-time customer. I entered the Grapevine store to see what I could do. A pleasant gentleman behind the counter was taking orders. I was 3rd in line. Immediately I thought, "This store isn't run by the same folks that operate Grand Prairie." Turns out, I was right. As I explained our quandary, the gentleman said, "Oh yeah, you were just in the drive-through." I told him Grand Prairie refused to issue a refund. He was shocked. I asked what I could do. He asked me what we ordered and I told him. He punched it into his computer and said, "I got you." No, no, no - that wasn't the solution I was looking for and I insisted on paying. "No," he insisted, "I got you." I thanked him and told him I was going to share this story. I gave him my business card, took a quick selfie as he handed me the order, gave him a bro hug, and thanked him asking, "What's your name?" I'm pretty sure he said, "Able." If not, I apologize. It was busy and I didn't want to detain him. Schlotzsky's in Grand Prairie - Small Hill Drive - boos and hisses to your ownership and management for pathetic customer services Schlotzsky's in Grapevine - kudos and salutes to your ownership and management for stepping up to do the right thing. A special shout-out to the gentleman in the picture. He understands how to be excellent! NOTE: Abel is his name! Hours later and I'm still very impressed with this man. Visit Abel and his staff at the Schlotzsky's in Grapevine, Texas and tell them you saw this post. Pursue excellence. Chase consistency in that excellence. Do it in your professional life. I thought today's episode needed a long rationalization.  But as I was writing it, I thought f*** it, I don't need to be doing  verbal gymnastics. I know human beings, there, and our guest does too. So we'll just let these stories speak. About soccer, about trauma, about peace and coexistence, and about youth cultures both left and right of center in what is a diverse and divided country. This was a hard episode for me to prepare and process. But I am deeply grateful it came together. From Israeli ultras killed or kidnapped, to the Arab soccer club that won the Israeli cup, to what football and medicine in Israel have in common, we go to Ashdod, in the south of Israel, to Felix Tamsut. He is a self described lefty journalist who covers football and fan cultures for outlets in Germany and Israel. Chapter 1 What's The True Believer Book by Eric Hoffer"The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements" is a book written by Eric Hoffer, a social philosopher and longshoreman. It was first published in 1951. In this book, Hoffer explores the psychological and sociological factors that drive individuals to join and participate in mass movements, whether political, religious, or social. He examines the characteristics and motivations of true believers, why they are susceptible to the appeal of mass movements, and how these movements can arise and gain momentum. Hoffer argues that mass movements often attract people who feel dissatisfied with their individual lives and seek purpose and identity through collective action. He also warns about the potential dangers and destructive tendencies of these movements. "The True Believer" is considered a classic work on mass psychology and remains relevant in understanding contemporary political and social dynamics.Chapter 2 Is The True Believer Book A Good BookOpinions on the book "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer will vary, as it is subjective to individual tastes and perspectives. However, it is generally regarded as a thought-provoking and influential work. Hoffer explores the psychology behind mass movements and the motivations of individuals who join them. The book delves into topics such as fanaticism, extremism, and the need for a sense of identity and purpose. It offers insights into the nature of human behavior and the reasons behind people's adherence to ideologies or causes. If you are interested in understanding the dynamics of mass movements, the book may be worth exploring.Chapter 3 The True Believer Book by Eric Hoffer Summary"The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements" by Eric Hoffer is a non-fiction book that explores the psychological and sociological factors behind the rise of mass movements and the behavior of their followers. Published in 1951, the book is divided into three parts: The Appeal of Mass Movements, The Potential Converts, and United Action and Self-Sacrifice.In the first part, Hoffer examines why people are drawn to mass movements. He argues that individuals who feel disconnected or dissatisfied with their own lives seek a sense of identity and purpose through belonging to a collective. He delves into the underlying motivations of the true believer and identifies certain commonalities such as a deep sense of frustration, a need for absolute certainty, and a desire for a complete transformation of self. Hoffer explains that these individuals project their personal insecurities onto the movement, finding meaning and meaninglessness in its ideology. The second part of the book explores the psychology of potential converts and the circumstances that make them receptive to mass movements. Hoffer argues that discontentment and a lack of individual meaning make individuals vulnerable to the indoctrination and seduction of charismatic leaders. The author emphasizes that a mass movement is most likely to attract the discontented middle class who feel insecure about their social status, as well as those who see themselves as failures and are desperate for a new purpose. In the final part, Hoffer investigates how mass movements maintain their momentum and the mechanisms through which they unite their followers. He highlights the role of fanaticism, self-sacrifice, and the suppression of individuality in strengthening the collective identity. Hoffer asserts that true believers are willing to sacrifice themselves for the movement because it helps them escape from the burden of their own existence and provides them with a sense of belonging and significance.Throughout the book, Hoffer draws on examples from...

First up is the Amanda Montell, a writer, language scholar, and the author of two critically acclaimed books: Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism and Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language (HarperWave). Amanda's writing has been featured in Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, Refinery29, and Who What Wear, where she formerly served as the Features & Beauty Editor. We caught up with Evan to talk about her journey to hell and back, how she's doing now, and why she won't ever stop blowing the whistle on complete fuckery. As a note to our listeners, and our lawyers, Mr. Manson has repeatedly denied multiple sexual assault allegations from multiple women and is currently suing Evan for defamation over the accusations, claiming it's all part of an elaborate organized attack. Please note that conversations like the one you're about to hear can be traumatizing for abuse survivors. Listen to this episode with caution, and if you or anyone you know needs support, see our site for free resources. Also please note that we love Evan Rachel Wood and believe her without reservation. Sorry, not fucking sorry Manson Stans.   Finally - and perhaps most controversially – is Ekhart Tolle – who is widely recognized as one of the most inspiring spiritual leaders in the world. His international bestsellers have been translated into 52 languages. And we can't verify this, but he might be one of the MOST quoted and/or misquoted contemporary spiritual gurus ever.
