The Thessalonian church still struggled with certain aspects of the Christian life. Paul reminds them that because they are called by God to holiness, pursuing and walking with God means that their actions–including their sexual ethic—will look different from the world's.

1-Thessalonians 4-5
The hope of heaven and the promise of the second coming of Jesus change how you understand and experience the hardships of this world. There are many things you will never experience, but the Bible declares that until Jesus comes again, there is one thing that everyone will experience, and that is death.Grief is the common bond between every generation, every culture, and every people group. When confronted with death, it draws your attention to the big questions concerning eternity, entrance into heaven, and the judgment of God and hell. The Thessalonians were new Christians and had many questions, but their greatest concern was about the Christians who had died before Christ's return.Paul writes these instructions to inform and encourage the church with GoGod'sruth. Confusion was causing them to worry and grieve, but Paul wanted them to be encouraged by the word of God. This passage teaches three ways that the word of God encourages and gives you hope.Ben Smith is the pastor of Central Baptist Church, Waycross, GA.Sermon preached 3/23/2025.Books and downloadable PDFs of Pastor Ben's sermon notes are available at http://bensmithsr.org/resources.For more information on Central Baptist Church, visit www.cbcwaycross.org.
The focus in our "One Anothers" series today is to encourage one another with Jesus' resurrection and return.
Pastor Ben Smith preaches from 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 on how growing in brotherly love transforms your relationship with the saints, the direction of your life, and your testimony before the world. The transformation of the gospel has both a restrictive and empowering effect on your life. In the previous verse (1-8), the Bible declares that the transforming work of God in the lives of true Christians is to cause you to abstain from sexual immorality. Most read this only as something restrictive. However, in verse 4, the Bible teaches that Christians are able to abstain from sexual immorality because, through the empowerment of God, Christians have mastery over their bodies and are no longer controlled by the passion of lust like the world (5). Building on this, verses 9-12 declare that the transforming work of God in the lives of true Christians enables you to love one another and that this love transforms everything about your life. This passage identifies three ways brotherly love transforms your life.Ben Smith is the pastor of Central Baptist Church, Waycross, GA.Sermon preached 3/16/2025.Books and downloadable PDFs of Pastor Ben's sermon notes are available at http://bensmithsr.org/resources.For more information on Central Baptist Church, visit www.cbcwaycross.org.
Are you giving God your leftovers? In this soul-searching episode, Jesse Cope challenges us to examine how we allocate our time and what those choices reveal about our true priorities. When we honestly assess the minutes and hours devoted to scrolling, watching sports, or working out compared to our time with God, the results can be uncomfortable—even convicting. With raw honesty, Jesse admits his own struggle with rushing through spiritual disciplines just to check them off a list. "Why in the world would we rush through time with the God of the universe?" he asks. This powerful question opens a deeper exploration into what we truly trust and value in our lives. The podcast moves seamlessly from personal devotion to marital relationships, drawing parallels between how we approach God and how we treat our spouses. Jesse highlights the danger of demanding that our partners fulfill biblical roles while neglecting our own responsibilities—a hypocrisy that has led to countless broken marriages. "If you're not loving your spouse each day," he cautions, "then you don't really love them."The heart of this episode lies in its compelling accounts of Christian martyrs from history. Through the stories of John Hooper and John Bradford, who were executed during "Bloody Mary" Tudor's reign, listeners are reminded of the supreme courage of those who chose death over denying their faith. Jesse's retelling of Bradford's final words before execution—"Brother, be of good comfort, for we shall have a merry supper with the Lord this night"—provides a powerful perspective on what matters most in life.Join the conversation that might just reshape your priorities, strengthen your faith, and inspire you to stand firm in your convictions, regardless of the cost. What would you sacrifice for what you believe? Listen now and discover what your daily choices say about what you truly value.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe
God's will for your sanctification requires that you abstain from sexual immorality, possess your body in honor, and live holy before God.We are living in a hyper-sexualized culture. It seems sexual perversion and sexual immorality are everywhere. However, though the world may be full of sexual immorality, the command of God and the evidence of salvation is that Christians must abstain from sexual immorality. How, then, can you live sexually pure in a sexually perverse world? This passage teaches three requirements that you must do to live a life holy before God.You must be saved. (1-3a) You must be self-controlled. (3b-6) You must be submissive before God. Lust, when left unchecked, deforms our view of others, our sexual appetites, our sense of commitment, and our sense of self. It reduces others to objects and distorts our understanding of relationships. However, God's call to holiness is not about achieving perfect purity but about setting our lives apart for Him. Holiness is about reordering our lives and loves towards God and His kingdom.
Kevin Anderson speaks from 1 Thessalonians 4 on the hope of Christ while looking to the end times.
Always with the Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) by Harvest Church
We all wrestle with the reality of death, but in Jesus, we find deep hope. Because of Him, we don't grieve like the world—we grieve with hope, knowing that death is not the end but a doorway to a resurrected life with Christ.

A Sanctified Life (1 Thessalonians 4:1-12) by Harvest Church
In this episode, I explain what Paul is doing when he exhorts the Thessalonians to “mind your own business and work with your hands” in 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12. I discuss the problems with historical anachronism and the difference between ancient and modern economic thought. I then discuss the wider context of Paul's though, explaining how his fundamental moral principle is cruciformity (living a life of sacrifice for others) and his views on the nature and responsibility of the church. Paul works to fund his own ministry (1 Cor. 9) as an example of cruciform sacrifice towards his congregations. I explain how Thessalonica was a diverse, cosmopolitan trading city with an independent government, and how Paul's trip to Thessalonica (Acts 17) resulted in synagogue leaders leveraging the local government to harass those that believe in the Gospel. I then turn to 1 Thessalonians as a letter, showing how persecution and eschatology are the two major themes that run through the letter. Paul wants the Thessalonians to imitate him (1:6-7) and explains how he is willing to work to provide for his own needs (2:9-12). Before the final section of 1 Thessalonians, Paul explains how cruciform love and the identity of the church shapes the rest of his exhortation (3:11-13). We then finally come to 1 Thess. 4:9-12. The historical and sociological background of the passage is the Roman patron-client system, where wealthy patrons give gifts of money, clothing, and food to clients in exchange for social clout and political support. Paul wants all Christians to become charitable and benefactors, and his language in 4:9-12 is a rejection of the patron-client system. Paul encourages Christians to leave and reject the patron-client system and instead work with their hands, so that they will not be in need and can help those that genuinely are. This is also an example of the cruciform character of the church to outsiders. I then explain some principles that Christians should derive from this passage and how they should shape our perception of Christian responsibility in the modern world. Until you move from a set of rules to a relationship, your life will always be about a fence and you will find yourself in slavery to the law. It's not about being on this side or that side of the fence. It's not actually about a fence at all. It's about a cross. It's about loving the one who went to the cross and who is coming back again.
