Euthyphro by Plato audiobook. Awaiting his trial on charges of impiety and heresy, Socrates encounters Euthyphro, a self-proclaimed authority on matters of piety and the will of the gods. Socrates, desiring instruction in these matters, converses with Euthyphro, but as usual, the man who professes to know nothing fares better than the man who claims to be an expert. One of Plato's well-known Socratic Dialogues, Euthyphro probes the nature of piety, and notably poses the so-called Euthyphro Dilemma: Do the gods love a thing because it is holy, or is a thing holy because it is loved by the gods?

How does one become a 'Philosopher King'? Plato's 'Republic' is one of the seminal works of philosophy and one that has had a tremendous impact on critical thought and culture. It follows Socrates as he converses with friends and interlocutors on the purpose of defining the nature of 'justice'. As part of his argument, Socrates develops the concept of a perfect 'Republic' led by his Philosopher Kings. Another famous cultural icon to emerge from the book was his allegory of the cave (Plato's Cave), a way to describe the effect of education and seeking higher knowledge.Kyrin had this to say about 'Republic': "It was hugely influential and a pivotal book that requires attention and work. This isn't the sort of book that you can read flippantly and think that you've got it. For me it was largely not enjoyable but did provoke some insights. I feel this is one of those books you need to read a couple of times to really delve into all of its themes."Timeline:(0:00) - Introduction & synopsis(2:17) - The nature of 'justice'(5:07) - Philosopher Kings and finding the true reality(7:43) - The 5 types of regimes(10:25) - Personal observations(14:14) - Summary(15:18) - Pragmatic takeaway: compassionAs always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Connect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast

Are you willing to put it all on the line and to die for your beliefs? In 'The Trial And Death Of Socrates' we indeed find someone who is willing to do this. This short book is composed from three of the four Socratic Dialogues (Apology/Crito/Phaedo) by the Athenian philosopher, Plato. It mostly takes the form of monologues by Socrates with some short back and forth with his friends. It tells of his trial, reasons for not fleeing, musings on death & the soul before his final suicide by poison.Kyrin of the Mere Mortals crew had this to say. "What does one owe the state? Is suicide morally acceptable? Is the soul immortal? These are several questions that arise when one reads of Socrates final days and his rhetorical arguments. He obviously was a man who thought deeply and indeed contained much wisdom. Unfortunately his argumentative and holier than thou personality resulted in making too many enemies and subsequently led to his unfair punishment. A short and quick read but one that requires concentration, perfect for those who love philosophy."Connect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/

Many conversations we have are just casual. A chat at the coffee machine, a gossip about the mistakes of a colleague, an exchange about a customer project with your manager… But some conversations require a bit more attention and depth: difficult dilemma’s, strategic choices that have to be made, or conversations to clarity why we’re doing certain things. In this episode I speak with Erik Boers. Erik is a philosopher who helps companies and organizations to have deeper conversations about topics that matter. He owns his own company Het Nieuwe Trivium to facilitate deeper dialogues in organizations, and he educates other professionals in this ‘art’. Erik is a colleague of mine, with whom I work already for many years. His interventions in teams, boardrooms and the public space are very powerful, and in this episode we will learn more about his field of work. We will speak about why we find it so difficult to have a good conversation, and why good conversations are an art that requires purposeful attention. Erik will share how he ensures teams are prepared to go in-depth and spend time on so-called Socratic dialogues, while many business professionals will initially be skeptical about anything that costs valuable time. Also, Erik will reflect on dialogues in the public space, to which he switched his attention recently. Els de Maeijer, researcher Communication and Innovation at Fontys University of Applied Science in The Netherlands, reflects on the interview with Erik Boers, and gives some further thoughts about the “old school” model of communication (sender-receiver) versus the current view of conversations: meaning only is created in interaction. Like every week, the podcast ends with some practical tips to enhance the Clarity of your Conversations, in the office and at home. For more information about Erik Boers, check his company website (https://www.hetnieuwetrivium.nl/index.php?id=173) .

On today’s episode of the Socratic Dialogues, Kristin Luna and Kristin Llamas chat it up about the meaning of community! Luna shares with us how community has become so important to her and how she truly gets to know an area as a travel journalist.Luna had always aspired to be a writer, and before graduating from the University of Tennessee in 2005, she had 7 years of experience in journalism.  While originally interested in sports journalism,  she got her feet wet in the travel industry by writing a hotel and restaurant column for Newsweek, and authored more than a dozen guidebooks for Frommer's. Today, she still freelances for such publications as Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, Parade and AAA Living. But she more regularly works with city and state tourism boards on their content efforts through her media production agency, Odinn Media, and 12-year-old blog Camels & Chocolate. Kristin’s ability to connect with people and community has allowed her to maintain a successful career as a freelance journalist. She genuinely loves people and credits being interested and curious to helping her build trusting relationships. Her career began well before social media was used to make connections, and she still believes that face to face relationships are invaluable to building community. In 2018, Kristin and her husband created a mural program that is focused on helping cities add public art to the streets as a way to benefit local communities. They have seen first hand how much murals and public art can benefit neighborhoods, bringing people of all age, race, and background together. Her involvement in boosting the morale in communities all around is truly inspiring! How do you connect with the community around you?
