These novels are seeped in Canadiana – set in Montreal, Quebec in 2012, the novel explores the emerging fentanyl problem in Canada and the havoc it wrecks on people in Denny's life. The first in a series of detective novels, this is a great tale, I read it in a few sittings. With a background in poetry, Chris has a deft hand in painting scenes, truly bringing us into feeling the scenes he's painted. It's a good read.We also talk “inside baseball” about the process of publishing a book, independently. The big benefit – you have total creative control. There's good insight here if self-publishing is on your mind.I hope you enjoy this episode. While he'd started soaring as a teen, Ian sought it out again when he immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1980. In reconnecting with the soaring community, he built lifelong friendships, now more than 40 years old. His life is richer with soaring in it - the connection to nature, the challenge of an ever-changing environment of wind and temperature, and the alchemy of mixing science and creativity, art and whimsey, keeps bringing him back to the sport year after year. It truly lights Ian up to be in the air, travelling with the birds, that much is clear. It was such a joy for me to chat with him about his passion.I hope you enjoy this episode. Discerning happiness versus joy is where Angie starts, as we wrestle with these big questions. “But happiness is a short-lived drug when it comes from outside of us,” she reminds us. And we meander from there, landing in a formula of “love is a noun and a verb + begin again + community” as one tonic for getting through these perilous times.I hope you enjoy this wee chat. It's about choice. Knowing who you BE, understanding your habits in who you are, how they get in your way, and how to develop a way to choose. We all have habits of being that were grooved into us long ago. In how we were raised, in who we are when we're born, and in what we go through in our lives. These are unconscious, and help us navigate our world. Just as we outgrow our jeans, we can also outgrow our habits, but we don't often realize that this has happened. So how do you gain awareness of this, so that you can stop getting in your own way and choose a life of intention? How do we manage to feel steady enough to see who we really are, so that we can ask these questions of ourselves? Well, I think, joy is key. It supports us in our humanity, in seeing ourselves without judgement, and in seeing the humanity of others as well. It enables both hope, and grace. Hope in something better, and grace for lapses in ourselves and others. All this is why, in my fifth year, I'm doing these podcasts. These topics matter. More than ever.Thoughts and comments are welcome. Send them to meanderingswithtrudy@gmail.com.Episode links:Chapman Coaching Inc.Royalty free music is called Sunday Stroll – by Huma-Huma
My break went well, full of writing, and a little travel. I talk a bit about that. I also explore how I find calm, and make way for joy, despite the crazy that is so much of our world right now.As usual, I've dipped into "Embers" by Richard Wagamese, and also “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” for inspiration. Coming out of that, I have an invitation for you to consider… What beauty do you care for in your life? And how does it enhance your world? Drop me a note and share what you find... I read everything you send me.I hope you've subscribed to this wherever you get your podcasts. Please, share my work widely, give us a review or a drop us a few stars, it really does help. We start this cold, dark winter day with discussions on pre-show conversations. The Mayor knocked us out with an interesting fact about dogs and how they can't catch colds or flu from humans. He was so happy to find out that his wife, Dona, couldn't get Milton sick. Undoubtedly, it IS interesting, but he was simply giddy about it! Maino admits that he's eating a ton of sardines. I guess we should be happy...for...him? Then, the guys, with the help of our listeners, talk about the upcoming draft. Click HERE to send us a text message! On our first (and dear Gods probably only) episode of Sidetracks and Meanderings of Old Seattle, we host a full cast Q&A! This is a bit late and was supposed to come out after episode 28, but if there is ANYTHING you wanna know about our show, we probably cover it in this self-indulgent spectacular! This episode is a RIDICULOUS 3+ hours, so remember the rules for marathons: pace yourself, bring plenty of water and don't be afraid to take breaks. Maaaybe don't carb load before this thing though! Our opening theme is “Myths and Legends” by Robert Bruckmayer which you can pick up at his bandcamp or stream on Spotify. The day starts with the news that Maino is using crutches. He thinks he strained his Achilles tendon while working out. This guy can't catch a break. He starts working out, and now he's injured. Plus he has the root canal on Thursday. Then, our new but very good friend, Kim Paul joins via the phone to talk a bit about our LIVE broadcast coming on Thursday morning. In April, Bob Dylan is coming to Northeast Wisconsin with a show at the Weidner Center in Green Bay. The guys discuss ticket prices, and that spurs conversation about shows that you missed that you kick yourself for missing. Johnny Cash, Elton John, Paul McCartney, George Carlin, Tom Petty, and the Eagles are shared by our listeners. Jim announces he's lost quite a bit of weight. We're so proud of him, but we find out he's taking Ozempic. Nothing wrong with that, and we're happy he came clean. Jim says he's taking a cruise, and that sparks conversations about cruises and vacations, in general. Then, it's Linda Blair's birthday today. She was in the movie "The Exorcist". John shares a very funny story about something that happened when he saw the movie. It made for some great laughs. The guys break down the first 48 hours of the Trump administration. And Maino teaches us about Heikki Lunta in the U.P. The discussion begins with the Vikings' loss last night on Monday Night Football. John and Todd are thrilled with the loss, while Jim is unsure. They also discuss the Packer fan being bullied at the Eagles game on Sunday afternoon. The video has gone viral and has been viewed millions of times. Maino calls for Roger Goodell to ban that Eagles fan for life. The guys also discuss Mike McCarthy's firing from the Cowboys and what they think Jerry Jones will do next. Then, Maino gives the recipe details on the soup he promised to make for the team. It kinda sounds good, but he may need a few additional flavor enhancers. The guys start the morning off talking about the horrendous Packer loss to the Bears. That takes the conversation to the winning Bears team, who won the Superbowl and did the "Superbowl Shuffle" video. Maino brings up "Let's Ram It" from the Rams and a listener texts in with "Jump In The Stands" from the Packers. All of the videos are bad but worthy of a watch on YouTube. We're not sure how but the the discussion turns to the price of hotel rooms for the NFL Draft. Hotels and porn shops. That's where it all ended! Can you say "off the rails?" The guys discuss everything from this week's weather forecast to the Aaron Rodgers miniseries on Netflix. Maino gives the program a thumbs down, and The Mayor says he wouldn't waste his time watching it! Maino also discusses the Superior Dome in Michigan. It's the largest wooden dome in the world, but Jim doesn't believe it. Todd looks it up, and Maino is right! Jim comes up with ideas for marketing the dome. We don't think it needs any help. They talk a bit about skiing and cross-country skiing. The conversations include stories about The Mayor wearing sweats to put up in Christmas lights over the weekend. A neighbor didn't recognize him and said he was sore this morning. (He may need to hire it out). Maino was grocery shopping in pants that were too big, with no belt, and without underwear. (Must who hear this stuff so early in the morning?) After several days away, the guys are ready to roll into the new week! Maino spent most of the long weekend watching football, and The Mayor spent the weekend in New York for Thanksgiving. Today is Cake Day, and we hear something very shocking from Jim. Apparently, he's not a fan of cake. This news blows away Maino & Todd and the listeners. It may be the most incredible information we've ever heard! Jim's in a good mood because he's going on vacation immediately following the show. (He's actually in a giggly mood!) The guys talk about cuff links, french cuffs, and the fact that Jim needs to put together a finishing school for young men. We started the morning by discussing last night's UWGB men's basketball game. The guys won, but Jim was unhappy about the conversations around him during the game. How do you feel about that? Maino continues to hunt for his 30-point buck, so Nikki Z. sits in with The Mayor. In the paper today, there is a poll that states Green Bay is in the top 12 best places to live and the top 11 for cities to retire. It's pretty cool stuff! Jim also tells us about one of the city's former mayors who only had a 4th-grade education. (I guess it doesn't take much to get the gig.) Jim also has an idea for a Christmas card for Todd. (Todd doesn't do Christmas cards...so this should be interesting.) Maino's at deer camp, so Nikki Z. sits in with Jim. We start the morning off talking about the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks, and the Herd. Jim talks about taking his real estate license online. He claims he aced the tests but hopes they don't check to make sure he read the text and watched the videos (cuz he didn't). Somehow, the conversation turns to holiday plans, and Jim steps up with ideas for making YOUR holidays special. Friday morning meanderings begin with talk about meat sticks. Yes. Meat sticks. (This IS Maino & The Mayor, after all). The conversation turns to "fat clothes". It's a great topic: what would you do? If you lost weight, would you get rid of your "fat clothes," or would you keep them with the possibility of gaining weight again? They guys revisit the story of John melting a plastic spoon in his soup. Jim admits to burning soup on the stove. He took a nap and forgot he was cooking. Lisa Hale joins from NEWisco Weekend to let us know what's planned for this weekend's show, which is all about libraries and books! By coincidence, the guys all wear black today. They've all lost a few pounds and probably want to look even more svelt. Excellent work, guys! It's Sadie Hawkins Day, so the guys discuss whether they were invited to "the dance" back in the day. The Mayor says yes, but Maino says no. The discussion turns to the Green Lake man who staged his death and left the country. Both Jim and John admit they've thought about doing something like that. Johnny Carson, game shows and more meanderings round out the hour. The guys start the morning by complaining about being sick. At a radio station, the sickness keeps swirling around. They also talk about quick ways to save money, and then "trading books" join the list of morning topics. Somehow, the conversation turns to the old Columbia House album program where you could get 12 records for a penny. Maino also talks about Saturday night's event at the Northland Hotel in Green Bay. The hotel celebrated its 100th anniversary. Get this. Somehow, he remembers being at the hotel 50 years ago, in 1974, for an autograph session with the Packers and the Bears.
