An Expert on the One Thing Parents are Getting Wrong About Girls and their Friendships

This Glorious Mess

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2025 32:28 Transcription Available

In this special final episode of This Glorious Mess, leading psychologist and one of Australia's most sought-after voices on child development, Claire Rowe shares her insights on guiding our daughters through the emotionally intense world of female friendships. Claire unpacks normal friendship drama and actual bullying, from playground politics to social media pressures; and the big mistake we are all making and hindering their resilience. And after ten years of parenting conversations, confessions and chaos, the TGM team bids a final farewell and the OG team pop in to say goodbye - Holly Wainwright, Andrew Daddo, Leigh Campbell, Libby Trickett and Sarah Marie Fahd. They reminisce about how the show has guided countless parents through their "glorious messes" and celebrate the show's legacy of embracing imperfect parenting and creating a supportive community where the chaos, triumphs and challenges of raising children have been shared with honesty and humour. We’ve got a new family brand coming, so watch this space and keep your eye on this feed for something special coming in June. Parenting expert Gen Muir: this hack will stop 90% of sibling fights

Parent educator and mother of four boys Gen Muir returns with a counterintuitive approach to sibling rivalry, and some desperately needed strategies to get to the root cause of sibling fights. Gen offers a refreshing perspective on why conflicts between siblings occur and what they're really about (hint: it's often not what parents think!) Her approach helps parents understand when to step in, when to step back, and how to transform these challenging moments into opportunities for growth. The reassuring takeaway? We only need to get parenting right 30% of the time to raise emotionally healthy children. The Know Show – the golden age of hypocrisy

Are you guffawing a lot at the news these days? The hypocrisy of it all? Whether it's the “gift” of a $400 million luxury plane to Donald Trump (which will cost $1 billion to get off the ground), the idea of white Afrikaners as refugees, or even the Pope's style of Christianity too woke according to MAGA, there's definitely a lot to guffaw at these days. The hypocrisy is quite stunning, so what are we to make of it all? Is it good for the world, or is it the beginning of a new and confusing dark age? Meanwhile, Trump and the CEOs of America's most prominent companies are signing major deals in the Middle East, mainly in defense, aviation, energy, mining and artificial intelligence, sanctions on Syria have been lifted, Netanyahu is out in the cold (or is he) and deep sea mining is going to happen in order to counter China's mineral dominance – a “deep sea gold rush” is on the way – but at what cost to life on earth?Beyond the US and the shenanigans happening on a daily basis, Africa is being hit extremely hard by climate change, children born in 2020 will face 'unprecedented lifetime exposure' to climate extremes, extreme weather events in Australia (only two events) will cost insurers nearly $1 billion so far in 2025, Putin isn't going to Turkey for peace talks, and bombs continue to fall on women and children in Gaza. There's a lot to take on board, so come and join us, Friday 16th May, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG and 6pm AEST.To help us this week, we have Rebecca Downie joining us. Rebecca is passionate about the news and world affairs, and professionally is a personal branding photographer, the go-to photographer for entrepreneurs who are the face of their brand, a professional speaker, personal branding expert, as well as leader of The Athena Network Singapore, a professional networking community for female professionals. She is a great addition to our show and we're thrilled she said yes. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that's getting everyone's attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. We'll talk about what it means to us, the world and we hope to inspire great conversations on the news that matters in the world today. The Know Show is based on Andrea T Edwards Weekend Reads, which are published every Saturday on andreatedwards.com, and covers the planetary crisis, topical moments in the world, global politics and war, business and technology, social issues, and passion/humour/history. If your Meta Ads have been underperforming for months, you're not alone. February, March and April were rough across the board. High costs. Low returns. And plenty of head-scratching. But something's shifted. In May, we've seen a dramatic turnaround, some clients are getting the best results they've seen in six months. And it's not just luck. Meta has been quietly rolling out major changes behind the scenes. Some ad accounts have been switched over, others haven't. And that's exactly what we're diving into in today's episode. Inside this episode, I'll walk you through: What's changed with the removal of Advantage+ Shopping and the move to Advantage+ Sales campaigns Why only some accounts have been affected so far (and what to look for) What's different with the new campaign structure, more control, more automation, and fewer manual options Why detailed targeting, custom audiences and retargeting are fading fast What to do now to make sure your ads stay profitable as Meta continues to evolve If your ads have been expensive, inconsistent or just plain confusing this year, this episode will give you clarity and confidence moving forward.

It was more than a month ago when outback Australia was swamped by floods, experiencing a years' worth of rain in a week, which not only devastated lives and livelihoods, it devastated livestock as well. The floods were bigger than the size of Texas and to this day, locals are still waiting for the water to drain away completely. What were the final numbers of livestock lost? What was the impact and cost? How are local people feeling about this event and the future? We'll get to the bottom of that, as well as other major news on climate from around the world, including new information on the AMOC, some promising news from Antarctica (or is it?), the farmers in the UK have raised the alarm on crops, Tony Blair putting his foot in it, extreme heat events, a significant decline in bird numbers reported in the US and what it means, we'll delve into Overshoot following Nate Hagens definition, the war between India and Pakistan because our world can not afford war, especially at this fragile moment for our world, and so much more. As always, there's a lot to discuss, so come and join us, 9th May, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG, 5pm AEST. To help us dig into the conversation, we are delighted to have Heather Cameron joining us from the outback of Australia. Hailing from Gunderbooka near Bourke in New South Wales, she's a born and bred outback gal, but today, is running her own country retreat, so everyone can enjoy the peace of Australia's stunning nature. The Lower Lila retreat is 64,000 acres, grazing sheep, cattle, and goats, and has a carbon project to conserve areas of native bush lands for future generations to come. But she's doing more than that, Heather is a credentialed practitioner of coaching, while also studying to become a master practitioner of coaching, and she is also author of ‘Never Underestimate a Woman' with book three in the series coming out soon. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Just when you thought the world couldn't get any more dangerous, India and Pakistan are rattling sabres, following a terrible massacre in the Kashmir-administered region of India. While we know a response is imminent, the idea of two of the world's nuclear powers heading into confrontation is not a good sign in a world already overwhelmed by war. Will sanity prevail, or will Nationalism in both countries push us further towards a world of violence? Can the world even survive it?On the other side of the world, in Portugal, Spain, as well as part of France and Belgium, we saw the grid go out and it was chaos. There are many interesting aspects to this story, but the most interesting was the “facts” being shared (and believed) before the engineers even had time to understand what actually happened! Mis- and disinformation is now out there and no matter the facts shared, it will continue to be believed. It was also Trump's first 100 days in power and the media around the world is reporting on this, so how did he honour himself? We'll discuss it tomorrow. We'll also talk about Bezos bending down, China not bending down, how aligning with Trump isn't great for your electoral chances, Australia and Singapore's forthcoming elections, the extreme heat events hammering India, Pakistan and the Middle East, and more, so come and join us, Friday 2nd May, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG and 6pm AEST.To help us this week, we've got two special guests. Dr. Saurabh Patil is joining us from India, and he is a renowned keynote speaker, coach, author and accomplished restaurateur. His work focuses on men's mental health, where he has made significant strides in breaking down barriers and fostering open conversations. Saurabh's book is The Alchemy of Anger, harness your rage, transform your purpose – available now. We also have Xintian Zhang, who has spent half her life in China and the other half in Singapore, bringing a unique perspective to the discussion. Xintian has bilingual fluency and a bicultural understanding of both societies, and she works in cross-cultural communication to promote collaboration between China and Southeast Asia. Prior to this, she worked in digital transformation, branding and marketing strategies for multi-national corporations, and now she leverages her consumer knowledge, research skills, and project management competency to facilitate cross-border engagement. Anita explains why teaching kids organisational skills equips them with essential life tools, sharing age-appropriate strategies for decluttering without guilt (yes, you can toss those kindergarten drawings!) and breaking overwhelming spaces into "bite-sized pieces" that make organisation achievable for even the most chaotic households. In this special mother-son episode, beloved comedian and broadcaster Kate Langbroek and her 21-year-old son Lewis Lewis (yes, same first and last name) share the kitchen table wisdom that created their enviable mother-son relationship, and what really works in raising boys to become good men. Lewis reveals the parenting "nails" that shaped him - from Kate's emphasis on cooking together as a way to connect, to her positive approach to masculinity; while Kate shares how parenting evolves with each child (the inevitable relaxing of rules for younger siblings!) Lewis also reflects on how challenging experiences - like their family's move to Italy during COVID - ultimately shaped his character. Their playful banter showcases a relationship many parents aspire to have with their adult children, offering a heartwarming glimpse into a relationship built on mutual respect, shared laughter, and the simple power of gathering around a home-cooked meal. Send us a textLuxury meets adventure at Sandstone Point Holiday Resort, where traditional camping transforms into an all-inclusive vacation experience that's dividing the caravanning community. We dive deep into what makes this Queensland destination arguably Australia's most expensive campground, with sites reaching a jaw-dropping $1,669 per week during peak periods. From the moment you arrive, you're immersed in a resort atmosphere that prompted our nine-year-old son Jasper to declare, "It's not a caravan park, Dad. It's a theme park for caravaners." The facilities are genuinely extraordinary – swim-up bars, water slides, splash zones, pump tracks, recreation areas, and a unique wristband system that serves as both your access key and wallet throughout the resort. While the price tag might cause sticker shock for traditional campers, we explore whether the value proposition makes sense for families seeking a complete holiday destination where kids can play endlessly and parents can relax poolside. Our midweek visit (30% discount applied!) gave us the perfect opportunity to experience the luxury without the weekend crowds. We also catch up with Brad and Hayley from Our Australia Trip, who share their journey of turning a planned one-year adventure into three years of full-time travel. They offer practical advice on working remotely, with Brad securing truck driving positions and Hayley working as a relief teacher. Their key suggestion for aspiring nomads? "Set a date and just go – you can always come back for special occasions."The couple shares insights on their favorite Australian destination (the Ningaloo Coast), hints at an exciting vehicle upgrade in their future, and discusses how they're transitioning from a short-term adventure to a sustainable traveling lifestyle that might eventually include children.Whether you're dreaming of luxury camping experiences or seeking practical advice on how to make long-term travel work, this episode delivers inspiration and real-world strategies from those living the dream. What's your take – would you splurge on Australia's most luxurious campground?

In today's candid episode, fitness guru and girl-dad Sam Wood gets refreshingly honest about the behind-the-scenes challenges of raising four daughters. He shares the very relatable conundrum of what happens when different parenting styles cause tension, and how couples counselling helped him and his wife Snez navigate their way through. Sam opens up about his initial hesitations and the common misconception that therapy is just for relationships in serious trouble - which theirs wasn't. And, he reveals how it's been game-changing for their relationship that was already 'good' but how it made it 'even better'. This conversation goes beyond the perfect Instagram family moments, offers real talk, and lifts a stigma on what so many parents experience, but rarely openly discuss.
