The Her Hoop Stats Podcast: WNBA & Women’s College Basketball
Things weren't always rosy for Southwestern Oklahoma State women's basketball. After a dominant 1980's run as one of the top NAIA teams in the country, the move to Division II was grinding on the Lady Bulldogs. Enter Kelsi Bond (now Musick). The brash young head coach arrived with a wild plan. Run and gun. Push the tempo. Dribble drive motion. Threes and layups. No mid-range jumpers. She won three games (3!) in her first year. But she and the Lady Dawgs kept at it, believing in their wildly aggressive system, and things came around. They won the 2012 Great American Conference Tournament championship, starting a run that eventually culminated in a 35-2 season in 2018-19. The Lady Dawgs came up just short in the Division II National Championship game, falling to Lubbock Christian in double overtime. In this interview Musick explains why she stayed with her system through thick and thin, and talks about the big defensive switch that turned her team from a good team to a great team. Ari Chambers (@ariivory) has been a social media staple for WNBA fans for many years. The multi-talented journalist has parlayed that coverage into a job with Bleacher Report/House of Highlights. Ari knows the game, but more importantly, wants to connect the fans with the personal stories of the WNBA athlete. Maybe one day Ari will be doing a story on our next guest, Hailey Tucker. The lanky 6-3 guard who shoots the ball routinely from 35' had multiple D1 offers when coming out of Bartlesville (OK) High School. But in the end, she chose Southwestern Oklahoma State, and Division 2. She became an All-American, two time conference player of the year, and led her team to the D2 title game as a senior. Hailey just announced she would start her pro career in Sweden. Make sure to subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts. There's a new feature conversation every Monday, and in between you'll get some tremendous bonus content. Episode 274 Steve Gomez is the women's basketball coach for the 2018-19 NCAA Division II champion Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps. Gomez led his club to their second title in four seasons after capturing the championship on Friday March 29 in Columbus, Ohio. The championship game was a thriller, with Lubbock Christian prevailing in double-overtime 95-85 over Southwestern Oklahoma State. A former WBCA NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year, Gomez also led LCU to a title in 2015-16, going a perfect 35-0. An LCU graduate, Gomez was a standout perimeter player for Coach John Copeland in the late 1980s, and to this day, he still holds the school record for career free throw percentage at .855. He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mathematics and consistently used his degree to teach in the classroom while pursuing coaching on the sidelines. Gomez’s career began at Lubbock Monterey High School where he served as an assistant coach in the men’s basketball program from 1988 to 1995. In 1996, Gomez accepted the men’s basketball head coaching position at Lubbock Cooper High School, where he remained until returning to Lubbock Christian University to take over the reigns of the Lady Chaps in 2003. On this episode of the podcast, we talk with Coach Gomez about winning the Division II championship, what that pressure feels like to be on the sidelines in a double-overtime title game, how his players grew this season in their walk with the Lord, how Christ guides him as a coach and living out that faith everyday.
