Collin Cone is the head men's soccer coach at Lubbock Christian University. Cone is entering his third season as head coach of the Chaparrals, guiding LCU to a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents in his first year and has had seven players named to the Lone Star All-Conference Team, along with one Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year Award winner.   Cone is a graduate of Grace College, where he registered a 23-16-7 mark in goal for the Lancers, making 203 saves and posting 15 shutouts, guiding Grace to back-to-back NCCAA Division I Men's Soccer National Championship appearances. In his time as an assistant coach at Grace College, the Lancers won the Crossroads League Championship for the first time in 25 years and made it to the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the first time in 35 years.   In this episode, Cone shares his experience growing up as the son of two missionaries in Cameroon, how he came to play and coach soccer at Grace College, and his experience now as a head soccer coach and as a new father to twins.

Warren:  Lubbock Christian University in Texas and newly renamed Rochester Christian University in Michigan —Both schools are associated with Churches of Christ. Lubbock Christian University found itself in court defending the use of its LCU moniker against Louisiana Christian University, which adopted that name only two and a half years ago after more than a century as Louisiana College.  Natasha:  So what's happening between the schools? Warren: A January 2023 letter to the Louisiana school stated, “Lubbock Christian University will again request an amicable discussion between our institution[s] on this matter. But we are prepared to defend our right to our trademark if necessary.” As of January, the case had been transferred to a new judge and assigned to a magistrate for a report and recommendation.   While the parties await a ruling, both universities continue to use their LCU logos.   Natasha:

Three International Students share where they are from, how did they get here, and what they love about LCU.

Steve Gomez is the 3x NCAA Champion women's basketball coach at Lubbock Christian University. He graduated from LCU in 1988 with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Mathematics, and played on the mens basketball team where he is still in the top of many categories in the record books. He then taught math and coached at Lubbock Monterey High School where he served as an assistant coach in the men's basketball program from 1988 to 1995.  In 1996, Gomez accepted the men's basketball head coaching position at Lubbock Cooper High School, where he remained until returning to Lubbock Christian University to take over the reins of the Lady Chaps in 2003. He led the Lady Chaps to 10 straight NAIA tournament appearances and oversaw their transition to NCAA Division II. Since then, the Lady Chaps have won the NCAA II National Championship in 2016, 2019 and 2021, He also served with USA Basketball as an assistant coach for the U16 and U17 girls National Team, winning the FIBA America's Cup in 2017 and the FIBA World Cup in 2018. In our talk today, we discuss having a higher purpose than winning, the difference between coaching male and female athletes, selflessness, sacrifice, and how to recruit athletes into your program that fit your values and team culture.
