SHOW NOTES: On today's program, a proposed State Department rule could impact employment regulations for nonprofits…and some ministry leaders are voicing concern. We'll take a look. And, the North Carolina pastor who went viral for remarks he made from the pulpit about rape has apologized—but the controversy, which has sparked ongoing protests, caught the attention of lawmakers and inflamed the state's debate over school vouchers. We'll have details. Also, Salem Media—one of the only Christian publicly traded companies—has reported a $46 million operating loss in its latest annual report. That story later in the program. But first two Christian Colleges face legal challenges due to their names. I was in Indianapolis this week meeting with donors and others there. COMPLETE TRANSCRIPT: FIRST SEGMENT Warren Hello everybody. I'm Warren Smith, coming to you from Charlotte, North Carolina. Natasha I'm Natasha Cowden in Denver, Colorado. We'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Warren On today's program, a proposed State Department rule could impact employment regulations for nonprofits…and some ministry leaders are voicing concern. Natasha But first two Christian Colleges face legal challenges due to their names. Warren: Lubbock Christian University in Texas and newly renamed Rochester Christian University in Michigan —Both schools are associated with Churches of Christ. Lubbock Christian University found itself in court defending the use of its LCU moniker against Louisiana Christian University, which adopted that name only two and a half years ago after more than a century as Louisiana College. Natasha: So what's happening between the schools? Warren: A January 2023 letter to the Louisiana school stated, “Lubbock Christian University will again request an amicable discussion between our institution[s] on this matter. But we are prepared to defend our right to our trademark if necessary.” As of January, the case had been transferred to a new judge and assigned to a magistrate for a report and recommendation. While the parties await a ruling, both universities continue to use their LCU logos. Natasha:

Today's guest is Erin Brady – she serves as a College Associate Minister at The Way - a ministry to college students at Indiana Ave Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX. She holds a business degree from Lubbock Christian University. She would describe herself as happily belonging to Jesus Christ and she gets fired up about people knowing Jesus and allowing Him to change their lives. In this podcast episode, Monica and Erin discuss the importance of having intentional spiritual conversations with parents in church-based preschools. They highlight the fact that not all parents who enroll their children in Christian preschools are Christians themselves, and emphasize the responsibility and privilege of building connections with these families. They suggest using the "SALT" method, which stands for Start a conversation, Ask questions, Listen, and Tell the story. Both Monica and Erin encourage teachers to ask open-ended questions, actively listen to parents' responses, and share their own personal stories of faith when appropriate. They also emphasize the power of a simple smile and the importance of being obedient to God's leading in engaging with parents. They continue by reminding teachers that they are planting seeds and that the growth and response are ultimately in God's hands. God has intentionally placed them in their current roles and He is always with them as they seek to make disciples and share the love of Christ. As they close, they discuss the importance of being content in the uncomfortable to break out of our shells to share the gospel. You have an opportunity to interact with exactly who you're supposed to interact with. Who knows if God hasn't already cultivated the soil, so to speak, of some of the parents in your class? If you'd like to connect with Erin, you can find her HERE! If you're interested in The Way, a ministry to college students in Lubbock, TX, you can connect HERE. As always, we would love to connect with you on Instagram HERE and on Facebook HERE.

Focusing on the next play, next pitch, next snap, or next shot is one of the most difficult things to do in all of sports, whether you're a Christian or not. Knowing this, athletes will do whatever it takes to stay locked in while playing, even if it means weird rituals, gimmicks, or lucky charms. Focusing on the next play and not dwelling in the past is never easy, and even the highest level of athletes still struggle with this. So how do we navigate that as athletes AND as Christians? Landon Hughey, Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Lubbock Christian University, joins the podcast to discuss this intriguing topic of focusing on the next play. With experiences as a player and now as a coach, his wisdom throughout the episode is made known through his answers to specific questions on this issue. As someone who has coached at every level including the University of Oklahoma, Arizona State University, and more, Coach Hughey offers guidance on how this topic can apply to Christian athletes, how letting go of the past can push an athlete from good to great, and specific examples and quotes from people that used this to help them succeed. Coach Hughey and Ken talk about topics related to this subject, such as WHY athletes continuously focus on the wrong things, how social media has now brought a new problem to this, and how this issue shows Christian athletes where their priorities lie. Therapists on the Hostage Negotiation Team and Supporting Police Work: An interview with Dr. Andy Young Curt and Katie interview Andy Young about hostage (crisis) negotiation and his work with SWAT and crisis negotiation in Lubbock, TX. Content warning: discussion of violence, suicide, and homicide. We talk about what therapists can do within police departments, the interplay between mental health and law enforcement, what that work looks like – especially when involved in crisis negotiation, and skills therapists need when working in these settings. We also look at trauma response and how it is handled when things go south. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! An Interview with Dr. Andy Young Dr. Andy Young has been a Professor of Psychology and Counseling at Lubbock Christian University since 1996 and a negotiator and psychological consultant with the Lubbock Police Department's SWAT team since 2000. He also heads LPD's Victim Services Unit and is the director of the department's Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He has been on the negotiating team at the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office since 2008 and is on the team at the Texas Department of Public Safety (Texas Rangers, Special Operations, Region 5). He is the author of, “Fight or Flight: Negotiating Crisis on the Frontline” and “When Every Word Counts: An Insider's View of Crisis Negotiations.” He was recently added as a third author for the 6th Edition of “Crisis Negotiations: Managing Critical Incidents and Hostage Situations in Law Enforcement and Corrections”. In this podcast episode, we talk about the role therapists can play in crisis negotiation There have been many calls to defund the police and create roles for mental health professionals in law enforcement. Dr. Andy Young has already been doing this for 20 years. We talked with him about what that experience looks like. What can therapists do for law enforcement? Crisis counseling Hostage or Crisis Negotiation support (advising on the negotiation) Psychiatric consultation Predicting violence or suicide, assessing subjects' mental health What is the interplay between mental health and law enforcement? Police officers get 40 hours of active listening and mental health Officers started out a bit stand-offish, reported increased mental load due to needing to protect mental health professionals at the scene Finding value in taking mental health out of scope of law enforcement There is a huge importance in developing relationship with the officers Specialized training needed that can support integrating mental health providers into law enforcement teams What does work look like for therapists in law enforcement and crisis negotiation? Coaching on communication Assessing the situation and the subject Strategizing interventions to de-escalate the situation Provide context and reassurance to law enforcement professionals Hostage Negotiation calls are typically once to twice a month (and not every month). There are successful outcomes 97% of the time How do these law enforcement and mental health providers handle things when they go south? “There's me and other people like me – therapists who understand the law enforcement culture, and even are trusted by the law enforcement culture – where officers will reach out for additional assistance if they believe that they need it [after a traumatic incident]. And of course, me being around just walking through the halls of the police department, inevitably, somebody will say, 'Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?' and then it gets personal”. – Dr. Andy Young Crisis support Critical Incident Stress Management Mental health providers who are accepted within the law enforcement culture The political, investigative and personal elements of a lethal force incident Processing and debriefing within the team What skills should therapists have to work with law enforcement and hostage negotiation? “People get to make decisions for themselves. And we might be able to coach people on how to land the airplane, but they get to land the airplane themselves. And in my office, that's one thing. But out on the street where there's guns or elevated positions that we can jump off of or innocent people that we can kill. It's the same principle, but at its extreme, and it really tests a person about being able to apply that to yourself and your circumstances.” – Dr. Andy Young Pragmatic and understanding the situation you're in Practical, knowing your own limits Ability to manage emotional situations calmly Navigating the extreme stakes out in the streets Understanding law enforcement The benefit of having a mental health provider on a hostage negotiation team Training the team on mental health concerns Improving “batting average” on successful outcomes The importance of a well-trained team Our Generous Sponsor for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. Travis Warren has extensive experience securing access for renewable energy development across the United States. He discusses with Chad Hughes some of the key differences between access needs for renewable energy projects versus access required for pipeline projects.Travis began his career in land access in 2006 in the renewable sector. He trained on the job with a company in Texas and learned both access and renewable energy at the same time. While the majority of his career has been supporting renewable energy projects, he has also supported power transmission and oil and gas development requiring access. He understands the difference in approaches and what considerations are important from sector to sector.Chad and Travis discuss how much broad renewable energy knowledge was required, especially when Travis first started in the renewable sector. The expectation of stakeholders was for Travis to know about everything, from how wind turbines were built to how they were accessed inside, and how low to the ground the blades would get. Everything was questioned including where the equipment was from and what it looked like as well as the history of the developer behind the project. Travis has sound advice on strategizing and preparation for agents and insight on how green energy is slowly gaining more recognition and acceptance from land owners.“There's always been two things I've tried to press on my staff in the past. 1. You really need a sense of ownership in the project. Without that it is just a job and it's just you knocking on a door trying to get a signature…. 2. Be prepared to be challenged and critiqued.” - Travis WarrenAbout Travis WarrenTravis Warren is a Business Development Officer for AmTrust Title Insurance focused on energy transactions, specifically in the renewable energy space. His project experience involves development, land acquisition, title research and curative, landowner engagement and community outreach, and project management. Prior to joining the AmTrust Title team in Houston, Travis spent 15 years in the land service industry working on renewable energy, oil and gas, and transmission projects throughout the United States. After graduating from college at Lubbock Christian University, he joined a land service firm in Midland, TX working on several land acquisition assignments for wind energy companies before joining an aggressive development at Padoma Wind Power as an Assistant Development Manager. In 2010 he began working independently as a land agent for numerous renewable companies which grew into his own right of way firm, MAS Field Services, LLC, that he later merged with Contract Land Staff and subsequently took over as Vice President of Renewable Energy. Travis has worked for many of the key development firms in the renewable space in wind, solar, and storage projects from coast to coast. A few of the project highlights that he has been involved in are the Roadrunner Solar Farm in Upton County, TX, the Buckthron Solar Farm in Pecos County, TX, the Holstein Solar Project in Nolan County, TX, the Langford Wind Project in Tom Green County, TX, The Amazon Solar Farm Ohio in Brown County, OH, the Skeleton Creek Wind project in Major, Alfalfa and Garfield Counties, OK, and the Sagamore Wind Project in Roosevelt County, NM.---Chad Hughes | CEO, Entrepreneurial Leader, Author: website | linkedinTravis Warren |Business Development Officer: website | linkedin

Episode description: Dr. Shauna Frisbie is a Licensed Professional Counselor, an approved Supervisor for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC-S), a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She has taught psychology, family studies, and counseling since 2001 and is currently a Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Lubbock Christian University. Shauna joins us in this episode of Peace Meal to discuss the value of sharing and discussing visual content in therapy. Her phototherapy techniques are described in her 2020 book, A Therapist’s Guide to Treating Eating Disorders in a Social Media Age. Images, Shauna explains, and the stories we attach to them provide insight into deep emotional processes and responses. “When I do phototherapy with clients, I’m really trying to help them explore the meaning behind these images,” she says. In treating images as communicators of meaning, she and other trained therapists can help facilitate emotional awareness and processing with clients. Shauna outlines how social media and smartphones have made images more relevant than ever, especially for young adults in a developmental stage of identity searching and relational skill development. For those susceptible to eating disorders, this increased exposure to images can be especially problematic. Shauna explains how phototherapy can help uncover how visual content impacts clients’ relationship to their bodies and/or sense of identity, as well as offer means of healing. What is the difference between the Crisis (Hostage) Negotiation tactics we see on TV and in movies versus what actually happens in real life? Adam sits down (via phone) with Dr. Young to discuss what Crisis Negotiation is and how it affects everyone responding to the call, not just the negotiator on the phone. They discuss current training developed by Dr. Young for officers and SWAT members, as well as a look at his new book. Episode 274 Steve Gomez is the women's basketball coach for the 2018-19 NCAA Division II champion Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps. Gomez led his club to their second title in four seasons after capturing the championship on Friday March 29 in Columbus, Ohio. The championship game was a thriller, with Lubbock Christian prevailing in double-overtime 95-85 over Southwestern Oklahoma State. A former WBCA NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year, Gomez also led LCU to a title in 2015-16, going a perfect 35-0. An LCU graduate, Gomez was a standout perimeter player for Coach John Copeland in the late 1980s, and to this day, he still holds the school record for career free throw percentage at .855. He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mathematics and consistently used his degree to teach in the classroom while pursuing coaching on the sidelines. Gomez’s career began at Lubbock Monterey High School where he served as an assistant coach in the men’s basketball program from 1988 to 1995. In 1996, Gomez accepted the men’s basketball head coaching position at Lubbock Cooper High School, where he remained until returning to Lubbock Christian University to take over the reigns of the Lady Chaps in 2003. On this episode of the podcast, we talk with Coach Gomez about winning the Division II championship, what that pressure feels like to be on the sidelines in a double-overtime title game, how his players grew this season in their walk with the Lord, how Christ guides him as a coach and living out that faith everyday. Since beginning this podcast, Ryan has talked to composers, directors, singers, tour managers, authors, and teachers from around the country and the world. But one significant part of our audience has remained a mystery to him until now: parents. Today Ryan talks with Chris and Sarah Jarvis, who both teach at the same high school, and who are the parents of 3 year old Liam. They acknowledge the extra challenges that teaching parents face. The struggle is real, especially when your toddler wants to play with the iPad you are currently directing from. Listen [Subscribe on iTunes] [Subscribe on Android] Highlight to Tweet: “‘Can I play with your iPad? No, son, I’m directing from it.’” - Chris Jarvis Show Notes: Making it work, when both parents are working in the arts, takes some extra planning and effort. Family comes first. There are lots of school obligations: concerts, competitions, grades, shows, but you can’t let that overrun your parenting obligations. Block off time just for family, and protect it. Tag team when necessary; track and manage schedules to minimize conflicts. Use those great volunteers who want to help entertain your child while you are in rehearsal. Recognize each other’s need for adult conversation, or the need for no conversation. Bio: Chris Jarvis was born in Abilene, Texas, but moved to New Mexico when he was 5 years old. He graduated from high school there, and then rushed back to Texas, where he graduated from Lubbock Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Sarah Jarvis was born and raised in Brownfield, Texas, and she lived there until she also attended Lubbock Christian University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, and stalked Chris until he married her. They have been married for 6 years, and work as full time parents to Liam Jarvis. As a side gig, they also both teach at Wichita Falls High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, where Chris is the Choir Director and Sarah is the Theatre Director. They also perform regularly together in community theatre productions. Resources/links Mentioned: Wichita Falls High School Choir Nation group on Facebook - Going to TMEA? Richard (Rick) Secklin is the author of Parkinson’s disease – Looking down the Barrel, and an inspirational speaker. He was once the national gold’s classic bodybuilding champion, a health club owner and a career Texas law enforcement officer. At 50 years of age, he was completing his lifetime goal successfully graduating Cum Laude from Lubbock Christian University. That same year 2003, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In his battle of combating the disease, Rick, as a Texas Deputy, made a tough decision in his life to use marijuana for his relief of Parkinson’s symptoms. Four years into his battle; Rick’s eighteen year marriage was dissolved and his son moved away. Ridden with guilt, confusion, and hate for God, he quit his career as a once community awarded law enforcement officer and he found himself looking down the barrel of a gun contemplating suicide. Rick is a survivor living with Parkinson’s and will join us to share his story.
