In this episode, Andrew sits down with Naya to discuss her volleyball journey from a young athlete in Hawai‘i to competing at the Division I level. Naya shares how she first discovered volleyball after trying several sports as a child, the impact of club volleyball and travel tournaments on her development, and how competing alongside and against high-level athletes helped her realize that playing collegiate volleyball was possible. She also reflects on growing up in Hawai‘i's year-round volleyball culture and the lessons learned through training, competition, and pursuing goals at increasingly higher levels. The conversation explores the recruiting process, her commitment to the University of Utah, and the excitement surrounding her high school career as she continued to develop as both an athlete and person. However, her journey was far from straightforward. Naya shares the challenges of sustaining an ACL injury and surgery during her sophomore year of high school, only to later suffer an ACL injury to her opposite knee during her senior season. She discusses the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of rehabilitation, staying connected to her team, communicating with college coaches throughout the recruiting process, and learning to focus on what she could control each day.Throughout the episode, Naya provides an honest look at resilience, patience, and perseverance during some of the most difficult moments of her athletic career. She discusses returning to the court, rebuilding confidence in her body, continuing to pursue her goals, and eventually competing at both the University of Utah and UC San Diego. These experiences not only shaped her as an athlete but also inspired her passion for helping others, ultimately leading her toward a career in physical therapy. Whether you're an athlete, coach, parent, or healthcare professional, this episode offers valuable lessons on overcoming adversity, pursuing long-term goals, and finding growth through life's challenges. Enjoy the episode!

On today's episode we're focusing on rehabilitation of ACL surgery with Candace Townley Cox, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and body movement expert at Evolution Physical Therapy. Today's discussion will center around tips and tricks to optimize outcomes and some common pitfalls that may hold patients back from a full recovery. We have some great articles for you that contribute well to our conversation on the surgical treatment of knee cartilage disease. As always, links to all of the papers that we discuss on this show can be found on our podcast website. The first article is a level 3 case-control study published in the October 2020 issue of OJSM, titled Anterior Knee Pain After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction. Gustavo Constantino de Campos and his team in Sao Paulo, Brazil retrospectively reviewed the records of 438 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction. Anterior knee pain was reported in 6.2% of cases. Patients who underwent ACL reconstruction with a patellar tendon autograft were 3.4 times more likely to experience anterior knee pain. Also, patients who experienced an extension deficit in the post-op period were also more likely to experience anterior knee pain, with an odds-ratio of 5.3. The authors fund that anterior knee pain was not correlated with patient sex, age or surgical technique. We are joined today by Dr. Candace Townley Cox. Candace is a Colorado native who received her Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Following undergrad Candace returned to Colorado as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Regis University in Denver. There, she earned her Master's degree in Sports Performance while working specifically with the Women's Volleyball and Softball teams. Candace continued her education at Regis University earning her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Since graduating Candace has spent countless hours in Sport Science Labs assessing movement quality, efficiency, as well as bone and muscle performance. As a movement expert, she is able to address the body's impairments both from a table assessment and from functional movement assessments.

In this episode of Hurdle, host Emily sits down with elite volleyball champion, Carli Lloyd. Carli shares her journey of grit and professional longevity, from a decorated 13-season international career to leading LOVB Austin to back-to-back League One Volleyball (LOVB) championships. She opens up about the "hurdle" of being cut from the national team multiple times before ultimately reaching the Olympic podium and discusses how she maintains an elite mindset through personal tragedy and the transition into motherhood. IN THIS EPISODE The Power of One Ball at a Time: Carli explains how her team overcame a rocky regular season by staying committed to the micro-process, eventually securing the 2026 LOVB title. Embracing the Hardship: Why she views failures and professional setbacks as mandatory opportunities for human evolution. The "Hurdle" of the National Team: Carli details the grueling four-year cycle of being cut and released from her dream, only to re-commit and finally earn her spot on the 2016 Olympic roster. Healing the Mind: An inside look at her multi-year investment in therapy, life coaching, and energy work to overcome the "not good enough" narrative. Legacy on Home Soil: The significance of playing professionally in the U.S. after over a decade abroad, and what it means for the next generation of young athletes to see the sport within reach. The Morning Routine: How meditation and journaling serve as non-negotiable "reps" for her mental health. QUOTABLE MOMENTS "I’m here and still playing because I’ve been committed to the hard things. I’ve been committed to getting through them and welcoming them so I can learn and grow." "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." "Hardship is where we learn the greatest lessons. When it presents itself, it’s here for a reason." "The way you’re talking to yourself—the story you’re telling yourself—is the most important thing you’re going to hear. It will change your life if you nurture it."
