Slam the Gavel welcomes Heather Bendl to the podcast. Heather is originally from Round Lake, Illinois but now resides in the Daytona, Florida area.     She has four children ages 18, 17, 13, and 8. She was married to their father Justin Serlick from 2003 to 2013. Upon her divorce she was awarded sole custody of the oldest three. Justin Serlick refused to move out of Heather's home with her children after the divorce and he continued to emotionally and physically abuse the children and Heather.      In 2017 Heather had her fourth child with Justin, this was not a planned pregnancy. In fact, she was in school full-time working on her Bachelor's of Science Degree at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Justin was taking advantage of Heather after she would take her Ambien to sleep. Heather had tried over the years to get Justin to move out of her home but his mother had threatened Heather over the years that if she removed Justin from the home she would make sure Heather never saw her children again......Non-Profit Email Address:JusticefortheSerlickChildren@gmail.comNon-Profit YouTube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@JusticefortheSerlickChildrenNon-Profit FB Page:https://www.facebook.com/JusticefortheSerlickChildrenSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536  Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.comhttps://ko-fi.com/maryannpetri*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. In this flashback episode, we're not just talking the talk; we're taking a deep dive into personal struggles both therapists and clients face, challenging the stigma around seeking mental health care and embracing our vulnerabilities.I talk with Sandtrice Russell as she opens up about the need for safe spaces and advocacy, particularly for the BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ communities.3 key themes:Vulnerability as a Bridge: Therapists' self-disclosure and openness about personal struggles can build rapport and trust, making it easier for clients to open up and be vulnerable in turn.Authenticity in Practice: Showcasing your true values and creating an accepting space for clients of all backgrounds, including LGBTQIA2+, Neurodivergent, and BIPOC individuals, is not just good practice—it's essential for safety and relatability. The Human Connection: Therapy is more than a checklist; it's about actual authentic human connection and openness to change. We must prioritize the rapport and right fit in the therapist-client relationship.Note from Sandtrice:I've been in the helping profession since 2004. I've been working in my respective field for over 18 years. Marilyn Waite leads the Climate Finance Fund. She has worked across four continents in renewable and nuclear energy, climate modeling, and investment. Author of Sustainability at Work: Careers That Make a Difference, Marilyn's writing has been featured in the Financial Times, the Boston Globe, and Trellis (formerly GreenBiz), where she served as editor at large. Marilyn holds a Master's Degree with distinction in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, magna cum laude, from Princeton University. She serves on multiple boards and investment committees, including Climate First Bank. In this episode, we discuss: ●     The role of established companies and start-ups in battling climate change ●     What being intentional about “where your money sleeps” means ●     What a JEDI lens—justice, equity, diversity, inclusion—means when investing in climate solutions Key Takeaways: ●     Maslow's Hierarchy and Climate Impact: Imagine mapping global spending against Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Right now, we can afford to focus higher up on the pyramid—on esteem and self-actualization—but climate change could drastically shift that. Depending on how climate scenarios unfold, global spending may be forced back to the basics: food, water, shelter, and safety. This raises an essential question: how do we prepare to protect those foundational needs while enabling humanity to thrive at every level of the hierarchy and ensure we do so equitably? ●     Interconnected Ecosystems for Climate Solutions: Human survival is deeply intertwined with the natural ecosystems around us. We can't thrive in isolation from the world we depend on. Solving climate change requires more than a single silver-bullet solution; it demands an ecosystem of tools and approaches—just like the ecosystems we're working to protect. There's a beautiful symmetry in this: to preserve the balance of nature, we must harness the collective power of diverse, interconnected solutions. ●     The Role of Startups in Transforming Big Business: While large, established companies can spark change, the reality is that creating rapid, sweeping transformations within massive global organizations is incredibly challenging. This is where startups step in, bringing fresh ideas, agile solutions, and new ways of operating. Large companies can play a critical role by supporting these startups—scaling their innovations or integrating new processes. Together, they create a powerful dynamic where nimble startups help established giants move the needle on sustainability and vice versa. Happy National Honey Month! In honor of Honey Month, we wanted to celebrate beekeepers and the humble honey bees. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers share their adventures with beekeeping. Part 1: When Julie Carrick Dalton goes to check on her bees one day, she notices something isn't right. This story was shared at the Urban Waggle, a live storytelling event in support of the mission and programs at the Urban Bee Lab, in Somerville, MA in November 2023. Part 2: Jon Schulz thinks rescuing a neglected apiary is the perfect opportunity to expand his beekeeping business. Julie Carrick Dalton is the Boston-based author of The Last Beekeeper and Waiting for the Night Song, a CNN, USA Today, Newsweek, and Parade Most Anticipated novel. A former farmer and beekeeper, she is a frequent speaker and teacher on the topic of fiction in the age of climate crisis. Recently, Jon and his wife Amanda launched Blackland Bees, an apiculture business focusing on honeybee rescue, education, conservation and pollination services. Jon and Amanda can be found managing beehives at local community gardens, designing pollinator landscapes for schools and churches, rescuing and rehabilitating bee colonies and supporting Blackland Prairie restoration projects. Our guest this week is a key player in two important research and policy initiatives. First, she led the Army Comprehensive Body Composition (ACBC) study that led to the recent updates to body composition policy. Second, she leads the Female Elite Warfighter (FEW) research initiative which focuses on identifying the characteristics that make women successful in elite combat training courses. We discuss both of these ongoing efforts in this conversation. Holly McClung is a Nutritional Physiologist for the Military Performance Division at the United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) in Natick, MA. She earned her Master of Science Degree in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire and obtained her certification as a Registered Dietitian through course work at Cornell University and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Holly is dual-trained in nutrition and exercise physiology, holding certifications as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics and Certified Exercise Physiologist. On the Military Performance Team Holly functions as a principal investigator leading work in the female Warfighter and special populations workspace. Her work group is focused on designing and implementing research to quantify and model individualized energy and nutritional needs of modern Warfighters. She led the Army's modern body composition study, and her research supports the 2023 updates to the Army Body Composition Policy (AR 600-9). Holly has published more than 45 peer-reviewed publications and holds two patents on a mobile metabolic sensor system intended for personal use. Most recently her attention has been on characterizing the physiological, metabolic, and cognitive profile of elite Warfighters going through the modern Ranger Training Course to determinewhether differences exist between sexes. She also has some really interesting forthcoming research based on the Army body composition study pending publication that we'll keep you guys posted on. And most importantly, she's a member of Leg Tuck Nation.
