The Street Cats are a grassroots harm reduction group that has formed as a reaction to what aren't cracks in the system, but gaping chasms in it that all too many vulnerable Calgarians are at risk of falling through. With a commitment to radical compassion and the principles of harm reduction, the street cats are reaching out to vulnerable Calgarians in incredibly effective ways. We not only sat down with them to learn more, but we also were grateful to be able to join them as observers for one of their outreach nights and it was an incredibly powerful experience. Bashayer Arif is an Emirati writer, and the author of a wonderful new children's book - The Secret Life of Dubai's Street Cats. Her book about three street cats exploring the city of Dubai is about cats (obviously!) but it's also a beautiful story of friendship and forgiveness. We discussed the profound power of storytelling, why empathy is so important, and the danger of seeing the world in black and white.Bashayer also shared tips for anyone wanting to write a book - and get published - and she talked through her writing process.I was so touched by Bashayer's beautiful book, and our conversation around animals and what they have to teach us left me hopeful and happy. Cats... you might love them or hate them. But, no matter which one of these, a cat is still a beautiful creation put here on earth... for loving, to love, to chase mice, or be chased by dogs, to scratch sofas, to rub up against your leg... or just sit there and be doted on hand and foot until they're satisfied. No matter what, cats have a place on this earth, just like any other creature.Sadly though, many cities or even countries don't have plans or actions in place to control what has become somewhat of an excessive population. Due to a lack of knowledge, a lack of care, and perhaps a level of greed... In one area of Dubai however, there are a group of dedicated airline crew, trying to combat this problem. Through an overabundance of care, hard work and persistence they are really trying to make a difference, firstly with care of the street cats, education to those that might not have knowledge about cats, and through their hard earned money.Join us for part one as we chat with Anamarija and Monika, the two girls at the centre of the Facebook group Crew4Paws, and find out what the story is with these cats, and how you could maybe help this situation, and perhaps fall in love with your own furry little feline.
Episode 24 - This week we talk about how we try not to get raped while jogging (thanks men), we apologize in advance to potential rapists for not being "presentable" down there, Brandy complains about not getting human trafficked, we barrel through some craigslist weirdos, and interview street person Melissa V! We examine Brandy's street cat's love languages, say "I do" to getting married again to - I mean, with - Melissa, and derail our own interview by talking about getting mental health help.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/comicallyanxious)
