On today's episode, I talk to musician Jeff Mueller. Originally from Louisville, KY, Jeff formed the band Rodan in 1992 with his friend Jason Noble, releasing the seminal album Rusty two years later on Quarterstick Records. After Rodan broke up, Jeff formed June of 44, and they put out almost an album a year until they stopped playing together in 1999. Rodan's break-up also blossomed into a new band for Jeff and Jason, Shipping News. Shipping News released numerous albums over the next fifteen years, many of them on Quarterstick, until Jason's death in 2012. Most recently, Solid Brass Records released Jeff and Jason's first high school group King G & the J Krew, which is somewhere in-between Rodan and the Beastie Boys, and it is a delight! Send us Fan MailGodzilla doesn't just fight monsters in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He fights our attention spans, our nostalgia, and a human plot that sometimes feels like it was written by a committee of eco-terrorists and stressed-out scientists. We lean into all of it, because the MonsterVerse is at its best when it's loud, mythic, and just a little ridiculous. We start with Rich's MonsterVerse on-ramp and his homework watch: Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island. That contrast sparks a real debate about pacing, visibility, and vibe. Do you want a slow, shadowy build where the kaiju are treated like a natural disaster, or do you want bright daylight brawls and an instantly lovable Kong who shows up and earns your loyalty fast? Then we get to the main event: Monarch, Titans, and the chaos of Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah (Monster Zero). We dig into the lore that makes this movie catnip for fans, including ancient worship, the idea of Godzilla as nature's balance, and the franchise callbacks baked into the iconic sounds and themes. We also call out what doesn't work, especially Emma Russell's plan and the way the human drama can undercut the stakes, even as the set pieces, like the Fenway Park destruction, absolutely deliver. If you're into kaiju movies, MonsterVerse worldbuilding, or you're gearing up for Godzilla vs Kong, hit play and come argue with us. The episode opens with the hosts fumbling the video intro cue — a recurring live-production hazard they blame on aging — before Daniel delivers a running update: four years into a habit started to lower his cholesterol, he's benching himself through the end of May to recover a back injury (a pulled muscle that resurfaced during a mid-week run after the Dollywood race weekend). He uses the injury news as a pivot into a pair of birthday acknowledgments: Pride48 network fixture "Auntie Scott" turning 60, and Daniel's partner Zach hitting 39 — the latter celebrated with a dinner reservation at Jiko at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, joined by friends Rodan and Darwin. The middle third of the show runs through the episode's recurring segments in sequence. Survivor Season 50 gets a lengthy debrief: both hosts' preferred players, Ozzy and Christian, are now sitting on the jury, with Daniel laying blame squarely on Ozzy for going home with an unplayed idol. Listener mail surfaces via voicemail and texts from regulars Kathy Bacon, Cat, Kathy Marshall, and Mel — topics ranging from a Florida Wawa gas station sighting to Adam's vaping habits to the long-overdue "So-So Question" game winner announcement. The News Game segment follows, with Adam reading five questions from the New York Times weekly quiz; Daniel correctly identifies the Hantavirus cruise ship outbreak, gas prices crossing $4.50, Ted Turner's ownership of the Atlanta Braves, Heidi Klum's Met Gala marble-sculpture look, and GameStop's reported bid to acquire eBay. A Disney Trivia Pursuit bonus round caps the game block. The final stretch meanders through Discord listener content — a cast-iron skillet restoration that launches both hosts into a mutual review of why they've abandoned cast iron cooking — then settles into a tech-and-AI conversation sparked by Adam's interest in learning machine learning from a programming angle. Daniel advocates using current AI models as personalized coding tutors over structured courses, and both reflect on where the AI development community's culture is heading relative to early programming pioneer eras. The show closes with Daniel apologizing for a late edit the previous week and the two locking in tentative dates for a May camping trip.Email: Contact@MixMinusPodcast.comVoice/SMS: 707-613-3284

This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl buckle up for a finale-heavy week with the last two episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord, the Season 2 finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the Season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again, The Boys Season 5 Episode 6, and Netflix's 2026 limited series Lord of the Flies. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Lord of the Flies: 7:02 Maul: 12:47 Monarch: 29:32 Daredevil: 46:50 The Boys: 1:02:16 Lord of the Flies, Netflix Limited Series Limited Series Episodes: 4 Titles: Piggy, Jack, Simon, Ralph Netflix release date: May 4, 2026 in the U.S. Original release date: February 8, 2026 Director: Marc Munden Writer: Jack Thorne Summary: Netflix's 2026 Lord of the Flies limited series adapts William Golding's classic survival nightmare into a four-episode TV format, following a group of British schoolboys stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. Ralph and Piggy try to build order, rules, and rescue plans, while Jack's need for power and violence slowly turns the group into rival camps. The series tracks the collapse through four character-focused episodes: Piggy brings the boys together, Jack embraces the hunt, Simon becomes the tragic victim of the island's growing hysteria, and Ralph watches the last pieces of civilization burn down around him. By the end, Piggy and Simon are dead, Ralph is hunted, and rescue arrives only after the boys have already proven that the real monster was never hiding in the jungle. Rating Out of 10 It Would Have Been Better Not to Try at All Brian: 1/10 Darryl: DNW Maul: Shadow Lord (Disney Plus) Title: Chapter 9: Strange Allies Air date: May 4, 2026 Director: Steward Lee Writer: Christopher Yost Summary: Dryden Vos enters the picture with an offer Maul absolutely cannot ignore: safe passage off Janix in exchange for Maul taking the reins of Crimson Dawn. Meanwhile, Maul reaches out to Devon through their Force connection, drawing her and the rest of the group into a desperate alliance. Lawson suggests a dangerous underground route out of the city, but the escape turns into a nightmare when the group has to cross a toxic river while the Inquisitors close in. Maul holds them off long enough for everyone to make it across, only for Darth Vader to arrive outside the city and casually remind everyone that there is always a bigger monster in the room. Title: Chapter 10: The Dark Lord Air date: May 4, 2026 Director: Nathaniel Villanueva Writer: Matt Michnovetz & Brad Rau Summary: The season finale throws Maul, Devon, Daki, the Lawsons, and the rest of the survivors straight into Vader's shadow. Maul and the Jedi fight Vader and the Inquisitors while the others try to reach Dryden Vos's ship through a wall of Imperial troops. Daki gets a brief victory over Marrok, but Vader kills him after Maul chooses self-preservation over loyalty. Devon's grief and rage push her closer to Maul, who promises to train her for revenge. Lawson sacrifices himself so Rylee, Two-Boots, and Vario can escape, and by the time Vos's ship leaves Janix, Devon agrees to become Maul's apprentice. Good news: they escaped. Bad news: the emotional damage is now fully weaponized. Kong battles Titan X while Cate escapes Isabel's base and Keiko rescues her. Tim and May try to shut down the neural implants, but the real fix comes from returning Titan X's egg, which pacifies the creature and ends the fight. Titan X returns to Axis Mundi with the egg, Shaw and Keiko get a brief emotional vision of younger Shaw, and six weeks later Monarch officially recruits Cate, Keiko, May, and Tim. Meanwhile, Shaw tracks Kentaro and Isabel to Thailand and finds Rodan waiting near a volcano, because this show simply refuses to end on a normal workplace update. MacDonald Writer: Dario Scardapane & Jesse Wigutow Summary: Karen Page's trial becomes the pressure cooker for the entire season as Matt calls Wilson Fisk to the stand, presents Savva's video testimony, and publicly reveals that he is Daredevil to prove what Fisk has done. Dex stops AVTF officers from killing Matt, then takes a shot at Fisk, causing chaos inside the courthouse. Outside, Daredevil's supporters rise up after BB Urich pushes the city to fight back. Fisk is offered exile to avoid charges, but because he is Wilson Fisk and subtlety has never once entered the chat, he lashes out and kills multiple protestors before Matt convinces him to take the deal. Fisk leaves New York, the AVTF collapses, BB lands at the New York Bulletin, Jessica reunites with Luke Cage, Heather Glenn starts sliding into Muse territory, and Matt ends the season arrested and imprisoned for being Daredevil. That is one hell of a “victory,” Matt. Deep responds like the emotionally stable aquatic nightmare he is and murders Noir in retaliation. Meanwhile, Sage incapacitates Ashley and pulls information from Bashley, discovering that Soldier Boy may know where to find a lead on V1. That sends Sage into full defection mode as the final season keeps pushing everyone toward the inevitable blood-soaked endgame. The episode opens with Adam disclosing that he is currently unemployed and wrestling with depression-fueled boredom — the paradox of having nothing to do while lacking the motivation to do anything. He reports filling his days with chores, daily Peloton rides, occasional haircuts, and no travel on the calendar until July. Daniel follows with his running update: he completed his fourth Springtime Surprise event at Walt Disney World — a Joy and Sadness–themed 10-miler — marking roughly three years of running. Friends Zach, Taylor, and Rodan tackled the full 19.3-mile challenge over three days. Daniel's next race target is a Peanut Butter and Jelly Run in September; in the meantime, he plans a low-intensity summer of 5K and 10K maintenance runs. Adam then recounts a pre-theater taco dinner before seeing Mamma Mia with his partner Marc, and relays an incident where his elderly mother — on oxycodone for a pinched nerve in her wrist, compounded by chronic back pain and two knee replacements — fell out of bed and couldn't get up. Adam drove over to help, and the two managed to lift her back onto the bed, with an involuntary gas release from the patient marking the climactic moment of the story. The middle section of the show is dominated by two extended recaps. First, Daniel delivers his long-teased Survivor debrief, skewering a game twist in which contestant Christian Hubeki was sent to a time-limited floating-raft puzzle with no upside if he lost — he was forced to return to camp and publicly announce both a lost vote and a pre-placed urn vote against himself, eliminating any strategic maneuvering. Daniel and Adam agree the compelled public confession was the design flaw, not the puzzle itself. A follow-up two-hour episode featuring MrBeast and a food auction (fries, charcuterie, sea slugs, and a whole cheesecake) rounds out the Survivor talk. Second, Daniel delivers the episode's anchor segment: a full recap of the inaugural Dollywood Half Marathon weekend in the Smoky Mountains. He and Zach stayed at the DreamMore Resort, collected their bibs from a comically undersized expo, ran their respective races, and spent two days in the park. Daniel extensively praises Dollywood's immaculate landscaping and overall cleanliness, visits the Dolly Parton museum and life show, and comes away newly converted to the Dolly Parton canon after learning how many songs she wrote. The back half of the episode cycles through several recurring and one-off segments. The Contact segment produces one voicemail from friend-of-the-show Scotty Aussie Battler, which launches a debate about hot pot and fondue restaurants, with both hosts arriving at the same verdict: you are paying restaurant prices to cook your own inferior food. The Gay Mix News Game follows, with Daniel answering five NYT current-events questions perfectly — touching on the Supreme Court Louisiana redistricting ruling, the White House Correspondents' Dinner assassination attempt, demands to fire Jimmy Kimmel, a Trump-portrait anniversary passport, and the Elon Musk vs. OpenAI trial — before stumbling slightly in a Trivial Pursuit bonus round. A semi-comedic side story involves Daniel being recruited by friend Joe Betance for a cross-promotional appearance on an escape-room podcast, only for his Riverside recording app to crash immediately upon joining, leaving Adam to carry the interview solo. The episode closes with the Birthday Segment — featuring Kate Mulgrew (71) and Jerry Seinfeld (72), identified via themed audio clips — and a coda in which Daniel recounts discovering an Air Supply YouTube recording from Epcot's Garden Rocks concert series and concluding, with audible relief, that he had not missed anything of value.Email: Contact@MixMinusPodcast.comVoice/SMS: 707-613-3284

Summary — The Gay Mix (Recorded April 17, 2026)This episode opens with Daniel and Adam's standard banter before Daniel delivers his running update, the segment he describes as the show's primary draw. He confirms he is running the Walt Disney World Springtime Surprise 10-miler that Sunday alongside friends Zach, Rodan, and Taylor — spread across corrals A through E — before flying to Tennessee the following Thursday for the inaugural Dollywood Half Marathon weekend. The show will be dark the following week as a result. Daniel also uses the update as an opportunity to air a grievance: the unbuttered toast included in the post-race snack pack is not a reward for running 10 miles, and he wants that on the record. The bulk of the episode is a detailed debrief of Adam's multi-day visit to Florida. Day one's itinerary included a bowling session at Splitsville (Adam won; the lanes went dark mid-10th-frame), an escape room with a Jungle Cruise/Society of Adventurers aesthetic completed 10 minutes under the clock, and a group dinner in Lakeland with the extended co-pilot friend circle. Day two was a full day at EPCOT, highlighted by Adam losing Zach's permanent cast member guest pass near the Living with the Land queue, causing interpersonal tension that Daniel diagnoses in real time using a hormones-and-personality-types framework. They still managed Ratatouille, Soarin', and the American Adventure — which Adam and Daniel agree is technically impressive and historically selective in roughly equal measure. Day three covered Kennedy Space Center: the Apollo control room simulation, the Saturn V exhibit (Daniel has personal memories of the facility from 1976), and the Space Shuttle Atlantis reveal, during which Daniel was, as he puts it, "very much not" emotional. The episode closes with the two recurring game segments. In the News Game, Adam reads five multiple-choice questions sourced from the New York Times; Daniel scores 4 out of 5, correctly identifying the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire duration, the Minnesota Boundary Waters mining vote, the World Cup as the cause of NJ transit price gouging, and Justin Bieber's Coachella hologram stunt, while whiffing on the Trump AI-Jesus-image question. The 60-second Disney Trivial Pursuit bonus round adds two more points. Adam confirms the trip was a genuine success and clarifies for the record that he doesn't require a packed itinerary — he came to see Daniel, not to be entertained. Daniel issues a formal satisfaction questionnaire disclaimer anyway.Email: Contact@MixMinusPodcast.comVoice/SMS: 707-613-3284

A long time ago, a demon was trapped in a medallion and that medallion was then buried. While two martial artists, Luke Curtis (Warhawk Tanzania) and Rodan (Wilfredo Roldan), vacation in Hong Kong, Rodan finds It and brings it back to the U.S. That demon, now loose, does NOT like that business! So, it tracks these fellas back to New York City (where you get picante sauce). This monster then takes residence in the subway system where it starts attacking people. Between gang fights, inept policing and friends doing weird things, Luke is juggling a lot! Now, he has to take care of some smelly (we assume) subway monster. Good luck, buddy! RTS grabs some lunch with the Red Dragons. It's amazing! Jeremy paints on some eyes and roams the streets. Another day on Colfax! La-Mar gets questionable spiritual assistance from a man whose face is falling apart. The real takeaway from this film (also known as Gang Wars) is: put all of your problems in an ancient, magical amulet and bury it deep! You'll be fine.

The hosts dig into why this entry feels like Toho trying to juggle a heartfelt custody battle with giant kaiju brawls, how the revamped Mechagodzilla might be the slickest design of the era, and why Baby Godzilla looks both adorable and vaguely cursed.
