Standing at one chapter, 21 verses, it's a quick yet pointed announcement of judgment against the land of Edom. While the book is short, it didn't stop my guest and me from talking about it for nearly 45 minutes. Obadiah has a lot to teach us on what God is judging Edom about, while also warning us what to be on the lookout for in our own lives. It's a book about the results of pride, violence, and apathy. Love and Torah – what's love got to do with it? This study series is based on the “Two Great Commands” – love Yahweh and love your neighbor. Beginning this teaching in John 15:5, Rabbi Steve Berkson explains what Messiah Yeshua meant when He was exhorting His disciples to “stay in Me and He in them,” and how that statement could also be understood as, “if you are in covenant with Me.” Without the Spirit of Messiah (His intrinsic nature) in us, it is impossible to be in covenant with Him and His Father. • What is Covenantal Fruit? Moving on, Rabbi Berkson expands on a crucial point for developing a correct mindset when dealing with those around us, centered on the phrase “he is broken off and thrown away.” This leads him into passages in Matthew 13 and Romans 11 that were not in his notes. • What is the role for the Kingdom that surpasses all of our ‘pay grades'? • Is your being considered a “darnel” or a “tare” predestined? • Do you hold preconceptions about what leadership should look or sound like? It's not known for being the most fun of the minor prophets. It doesn't pop up in many sermons, you don't see many Bible studies focused on it. There are many reasons why this is the case. Amos is a harsh book - he doesn't hold back on what he has to say. In chapter 8 it says, “The Lord said, ‘Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again. In that day the singing in the Temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence.'” Again . . . not the most fun read. However, the true heart of the book of Amos is an incredibly important message about how you view God. It's a book about justice. It's a book about repentance. It's a book about the true heart of worship. To help us navigate the book of Amos is Dr. Danny Carroll, Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College. It can be translated evenness, level, rightness, uprightness, equity. He shall judge the world in righteousness, and He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness (H4339). -Ps. 9:8All those who trust and worship the Lord will be with Him through God's righteousness attributed to them solely by ____________________ (Gen. 15:6); all those who reject Christ will remain in their sin, eternally judged (John 3:36). We've been walking through this series on Navigating the Bible we're currently neck deep in talking about the Prophets. Return to the Lord for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.” Joel 2:12-13The book of Joel, the second of the minor prophets, is such a beautiful book. It's not long, only three chapters, but packs quite a spiritual punch. It tells of a locust swarm. It tells of a call to repentance and what it means to rejoice in the Lord. It tells of the promise of the Spirit of the Lord. It tells of God's judgment against enemy nations and blessings for God's people. Joel is surely a book that, even though it might not be the most taught-through, has a lot of recognizable truths. To help us navigate the book of Joel is Dr. David Baker. “O Israel and Judah, what should I do with you?” asks the Lord. “For your love vanishes like the morning mist and disappears like dew in the sunlight. I sent my prophets to cut you to pieces - to slaughter you with my words, with judgments as inescapable as light. I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. But like Adam, you broke my covenant and betrayed my trust.” - Hosea 6:4-7We're getting deeper into the prophets now as we've moved from what are considered the major prophets to the minor prophets. Now don't let these terms color your view of these next books - the minor prophets have a lot to say. In fact, this conversation on Hosea has been one of my favorites. Honestly, I had not spent much time in Hosea before but man did re-reading it and spending time prepping for this conversation really impact me. Hosea is, yes, another prophet trying to warn Israel of the coming judgment of the Lord, but the approach Hosea takes hits home in a fresh way. To help us navigate the book of Hosea is Dr. Duane Garrett - chair of Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and author of a commentary on Hosea. Stephanie and Amanda discussed their journey of faith and the importance of biblical love in the church, introducing a podcast series aimed at addressing a lack of love within the body of believers and promoting steps to reconciliation. Stephanie highlighted gaps in both Christianity and Judaism, emphasizing that while Christianity focuses on the Messiah but often neglects the commandments, Judaism lacks belief in the Messiah. She expressed her belief that a body of believers seeking to follow the commandments and uphold the testimony of Yahusha should also prioritize love for one another.Amanda discussed the importance of self-love and healing in order to truly love others and glorify Yahuah the way that Scripture instructs us to. She explained how wounds and trauma can be used by the enemy to hinder our growth and relationships if not addressed. Amanda emphasized the need to overcome pride, fear, and the desire for validation from others, encouraging people to allow themselves to be seen and loved by Yah. Soon, everyone was clapping and cheering and snapping photographs, and at least ten others, who knew how to polka, joined in, including Heidi Ho! We're clearly off to something a little different with Ezekiel. And there's nobody better to help us navigate this different book than Dr. Daniel Block. Dan is the Gunther H. Knoedler Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Wheaton College and wrote a commentary on Ezekiel in 1998 that is still considered the gold standard commentary on Ezekiel. This episode from the beginning of Sukkot starts with Rabbi Steve Berkson taking us to the passage in the Gospel of John, chapter 7, where we see Yeshua Messiah standing up at the day called Shemini Atzerat which finishes the feast, declaring Himself to be the Waters of Life. Rabbi Berkson points out that Messiah said “Anyone who thirsts…” – but does everyone get to drink? From there Rabbi Berkson takes us to John 4:5-15, the story of the woman at the well, where Messiah Yeshua offered Living Water to her and also declared to her, one of only two people, that He was the Messiah. Rabbi Berkson points out the time of day this happened from which he brings a “deeper understanding” as to what the time of day had to do with the story which was the sixth hour of the day. What could be the “hour of man”? From there we go back to Psalm 119, but before he gets into that Rabbi Berkson gives instruction and encouragement in regards to studying the Word. It matters not how you do it – just do it, the way you do it. Then going into Psalm 119 starting in verse 114, Rabbi Berkson reminds us the purpose of taking this psalm verse-by-verse is that you would place yourself in the shoes of King David. You should feel what he felt through the words he wrote. Then you should apply the same love for Torah and place the same value and importance to your walk as he did. Who are the “evil-doers”? How does the Scripture define evil? Rabbi Berkson shows us plainly. Who or what are the “witnesses”? Rabbi Berkson expounds how these impact our lives. Lamentations, though not necessarily easy to read, is a beautiful book showing the heart of a man so burdened with grief for the choices that the people of Jerusalem had made. It's also a picture of God's heart, grieving for his chosen people to return to him. But like the book of Jeremiah, Lamentations is not without hope. We are treated to a beautiful reminder of the faithfulness of God and that hope continues to rest in him and him alone. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land. - Jeremiah 32:37-41Jeremiah is a book not for the faint of heart. It's a big book, 52 chapters and with a greater word count than any other book in the Bible. It's a troubling book - the warnings from a prophet of God telling people what is going to befall them if they don't repent and turn back to the God of their ancestors. It's a sad book as it tells of the destruction of Jerusalem. There's no doubt, Jeremiah is a behemoth of an Old Testament book. But, it's not a book to ignore by any means. At its heart, even with the difficult things in the book, Jeremiah is still a book about hope. It's still a book about the faithfulness of God. The passage I read at the beginning from Jeremiah 32 makes that clear. We learn so much about God in this book - it's truly a rich, theological text.
