Episode 140 – 15 Minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones – Dogs and Car Journeys   Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals! The rules of the game are as follows: ·         Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted. ·         Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish… ·         Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!   In this episode, I chat to Canine Dog Trainer and Behaviourist, Sharon Jones, about the challenges of working through cases where dogs show fear- or stress behaviours on car journeys. How do we know if this is a physical health concern (nausea or pain), fear or anxiety, fear learning, anticipatory excitement, frustration or something else? And, how do we start unpicking behaviours to find the emotional motivation and behavioural drivers? Have a listen as we chat through different thoughts and approaches, which medications may be useful and the discussions we have about this topic on the ACVB List serve.   One of my passion projects – and indeed the topic of my residency research – is stress management during air travel in pets and while air- and car travel are different in some respects, they also share a LOT of commonalities. Here's a link to my review paper on Feline Stress Management during Air Travel, which I mention in the episode, and, of course, so much of this information can be extrapolated to dogs too ! https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1098612X221145521   I absolutely loved chatting to Sharon, and I really hope you find this episode useful !   If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both!   If you'd like to know more about my case-based Veterinary Behaviour Membership – The Behaviour Case Collective – then you can do this right here:   https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective   And… if YOU would like to be part of a 15-Minute Podcast Speed Coaching episode, then apply right here: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/assessments/2148527544   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!   Facebook Group: Join The Veterinary Behaviour Community on Facebook   You can CONNECT with me: Website: Visit my website Trinity Veterinary Behaviour Instagram: Follow Trinity Veterinary Behaviour on Instagram Trinity Veterinary Behaviour Facebook: Join us on Trinity Veterinary Behaviour's Facebook page Trinity Veterinary Behaviour YouTube: Subscribe to Trinity Veterinary Behaviour on YouTube LinkedIn Profile: Connect with me on LinkedIn   Thank you for tuning in!

Episode 139 – Can I offer Veterinary Behaviour Consultations without being a Trainer?   This episode was inspired by a Zoom Call question from one of my lovely participants of Learn To Speak Dog and Learn To Speak Cat, who is in the process of setting up a Veterinary Behaviour Service in a new hospital she has started working in. Her concern is that she can't yet offer consultations as she has not yet found aligned trainers to work with who can support her in her cases.   What do you think my thoughts and advice were to her? Have a listen to this episode to find out and to hear more about my own personal journey and how I currently manage the "Behaviour Modification" or "Training" element of the Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan.   If you'd like the chance to ask me your questions in person, you can do that in our Live Group Zoom Calls in the following courses: Learn To Speak Dog - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-dog Learn To Speak Cat - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat Psychoactive - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive   And, of course, in my Membership Program – "The Behaviour Case Collective" https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

138 To Avoid or not to Avoid – That is the Question!   The avoidance of triggers and stimuli is such an important part of the treatment plan and falls into the Management "M" of the "7 Ms" Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan Template! However, it is also the part that gets possibly the most pushback from caregivers for a number of different reasons.   In this episode, I chat through those reasons as well as why I believe avoidance is so important for brain processes and eventually achieving a successful outcome. I also talk about the risks to the pet when we don't avoid and continue to expose them to threatening or frustrating triggers.   Finally, I talk about some of the strategies I use to get caregivers on board and how we eventually do start the process of re-introduction to those triggers, stimuli and contexts.   If you are a behaviourist or trainer working in practice, you may be very familiar with this topic and listening to my approach and reasoning may give you a different way of tackling some of these conversations.   If you'd like to learn more about the "7 Ms" approach to Veterianry Beahviour Treatment Plans, then my Masterclass on exactly this topic is for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/treatment-plans   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

During this conversation, the idea of Interoception was spoken about, and I thought it would be a GREAT topic to dive into!   Interoception is one of the 3 "Hidden Senses" and is essentially a sensory system that provides a dialogue between the brain and the inside of the body.   In this episode you will learn: 1.      What Interoception is and how it fits in with the other 7 senses. 2.      How altered Interoception can affect our patients. 3.      How to apply treatment and therapy strategies to improve Interoception.   I really hope you find this episode valuable and that it gives you food for thought when assessing your own Behaviour Patients!   If you would like to learn more about our amazing, monthly, case-based membership, "The Behaviour Case Collective", then click the link below: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 136 – Cooperative Care with Charlotte Lewis   I am always talking about bridging the gap between Veterinary Professionals and great non-Veterinary Professionals and encouraging more collaborative ways of working to best serve our patients and their families. So, when I heard that Charlotte runs a Cooperative Care Service at her local Veterinary Practice, provides CPD to the Vets at the practice as well as educational classes to the practice's clients, I just knew I had to chat to her to find out more!   In this episode, Charlotte and I chat about the benefits of Cooperative Care and Gentle Handling for the patients, the caregivers and the veterinary teams, and the kinds of cases that could benefit most from these approaches.   Charlotte also provides some really simple, easy and effective tools for helping patients feel safer in the veterinary practice – tools that anyone working in most practices can easily learn and implement!   We round up the podcast with an emotional conversation about the things Charlotte has learned from the veterinary team at the practice – resilience, a desire to show up no matter how big the emotional strain and a true love and commitment to the profession and the patients they serve – which left us both a little teary!   This is one you'll definitely not want to miss !   If you'd like to learn more about reducing Fear and Stress at the Veterinary Clinic, then my brand new Masterclass – "The 4 Pillars of reducing Fear and Stress at the Veterinary Clinic" is just the thing for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/four-pillars   You can find Charlotte at www.cannycaninesuk.com and on social media @cannycaninesuk   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

What if the belly fat, the exhaustion, and the 3 a.m. wake-ups were never about willpower or effort at all? In this episode, Dr. Siobhan Mitchell, a neuroscientist with 25 years of nutrition and cellular health research behind her, breaks down exactly what is happening inside the body during midlife and why the same habits that worked at 35 stop working at 45. Dr. Mitchell is currently the Chief Science Officer at MitoQ, a cellular health company with over $60 million in research, and she brings a level of scientific depth to this conversation that is genuinely rare. What unfolds is not the standard hormone health conversation. Dr. Mitchell explains the critical difference between the two estrogen receptor types, why visceral belly fat is actually a metabolic warning sign and not just a cosmetic frustration, and the truth behind decades of fear-mongering around soy. She also introduces a compound called S-equol that most women have never heard of, despite research showing it may outperform soy isoflavones for menopausal symptoms, joint pain, blood sugar, bone density, and brain health. The catch? Only 20 to 30 percent of Western women can produce it naturally, and the rest need to approach it differently. The conversation goes deeper into mitochondria, aging, oxidative stress, and why protecting your cellular energy production may be one of the most important things you can do in midlife. Natalie also opens up about her own experience with cortisol, soy, and the mom guilt she carried for 18 years over a decision she now knows was completely fine. This one is packed. Whether you are on HRT, avoiding it, or somewhere in the middle, there is something in this episode that will change how you understand your own body. Being under constant threat from Iranian missiles and hearing the loud "booms" of the interceptors taking care of them has been like nothing I have experienced before.   Living in this state of unrest really got me thinking about what we take for granted – the feeling of safety and predictability in our everyday lives and being able to live with a sense of control, choice and agency. I also know that this is not the case for many of my patients. Living in a constant state of fear or anxiety with little predictability of the environment and/or social relationships can be hugely debilitating and will affect quality of life, wellbeing and welfare.   There are some really easy ways to introduce more of these important welfare factors into your pets' and patients' lives and I chat you through some of my favourite ways of doing so.   All it takes is to make some small changes to implement these foundational needs!   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 125 – Behaviour and Thyroid Disease   This is a big topic, and I really enjoyed diving into it. I think we can all agree that the outdated notion that low thyroid hormone levels in dogs directly causes aggression is exactly that – outdated. However, changes or dysregulation in thyroid hormone levels in both dogs and cats can still affect behaviour and this is what I chat about in this episode.   Here are some of the things I mention in the episode: ·         The differences in canine and feline thyroid disease ·         Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs ·         Incidence of hypothyroidism in the canine population ·         Hormone cascade regulation ·         Clinical signs of hypothyroidism and how these can affect behaviour   I also talk about the complexities of diagnosis of thyroid disease and how this can be influenced by certain medications.   Here are the studies I reference in the episode: Gulikers, K.P. and Panciera, D.L., 2003. Evaluation of the effects of clomipramine on canine thyroid function tests. Journal of veterinary internal medicine, 17(1), pp.44-49.   Radosta, L.A., Shofer, F.S. and Reisner, I.R., 2012. Episode 120 – Suspicion of Chronic Pain with Dr Hannah Capon   One of the questions I get asked most frequently is how, if you are suspicious that your patient may be experiencing pain or discomfort, to relay this suspicion to the pet's GP vet or caregiver. Oftentimes, we see something during a consultation – a change in capability, posture, gait or behaviour – that makes us think there may be an underlying physical health challenge for our patient. But convincing GP vets or caregivers of the same can be challenging and frustrating.   That is why, when I saw Dr Hannah Capon present her "Suspicion of Chronic Pain" document at one of the conferences we attended together last year, I had a light bulb moment of "this is exactly what we need". In this episode, Hannah and I chat about how the resource came into existence, how we like to use it and we highlight all the different scenarios this document might be so valuable in.   It is important to note that this is not a validated tool, but rather an amazing, easy-to-use resource to be scribbled on during consultations and then presented to whomever needs to see it – be it caregiver or GP vet. It is also an incredible teaching tool to demonstrate that a patient is in pain or discomfort, and exactly which signs are raising red flags for us. I honestly wouldn't be without it anymore and I have it on my desk for literally ALL of my consultations – canine and feline.   This amazing resource is included in Trinity's Professional Guides E-Book, which you can purchase right here: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/trinity-ebook   And, you can, of course find it in CAM's MemberZone: www.caninearthritis.co.uk   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 117 – Melatonin   This was such an interesting episode to record and one that certainly left me with more questions than answers. In response to a question posed by a listener, I did a bit of a deep dive into melatonin, which resulted in some very interesting findings…   The general consensus about the use of melatonin within the Veterinary Behaviour world is that we simply don't have enough evidence of its anxiolytic or calming properties – both anecdotally as well as in the literature. I did, however, find some other very interesting uses of melatonin, which I talk about in the episode.   I also chat about the use of melatonin as part of the "Chill Protocol" as described by Costa et.al. in JAVMA, 2023: Costa, R.S., Jones, T., Robbins, S., Stein, A. and Borns-Weil, S., 2023. Gabapentin, melatonin, and acepromazine combination prior to hospital visits decreased stress scores in aggressive and anxious dogs in a prospective clinical trial. Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 261(11), pp.1660-1665.   In summary, melatonin is an extremely interesting neurohormone that has so many incredible effects, however, the jury is still out on its use and effectiveness as an anxiolytic. It may, however, be a useful agent for canine and feline patients showing sleep-wake-cycle abnormalities due to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 113 – Equine Behaviour Medicine with Dr Gemma Pearson   Wow, wow, wow, what a great episode and, obviously, a topic that, as an owner of 2 Sports Horses, is so very close to my heart. Dr Gemma Pearson is a truly inspiring individual who has carved out an impressive career niche in Equine Veterinary Behaviour Medicine. This has allowed her to make an incredible difference in the equestrian sports world and massively improve the welfare and wellbeing of so many horses.   In this episode, we chat about what initially sparked Gemma's interest in Equine Behaviour Medicine, how she was able to build an Equine Behaviour Service during her residency at Edinburgh University and some of the incredible cases that she has encountered during her career. We also chat about her PhD, the use of psychopharmacology (and its limitations) in equine patients and Gemma's great work with BEVA on the "Don't Break Your Vet" campaign and the "Hold Your Horses" course.   If you love horses this will be a truly inspiring episode to listen to, and even if you're not a horse person, but love hearing about inspirational stories and Veterinary Behaviour Medicine in general, this is an episode not to miss!   Here is the link to the "Hold Your Horses" course: https://www.beva.org.uk/News/Latest-News/Details/Hold-Your-Horses-the-low-stress-way-with-our-new-online-course   And, you can find the "Don't Break Your Vet" campaign videos by searching for them on YouTube.   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 112 – Feline Human Directed Aggression   Aggressive cats can be just as scary as aggressive dogs – to some people even more so as their body language may not be as easy to understand as that of dogs.   Feline Human Directed Aggression can be difficult to pick apart and coming up with a diagnosis really requires a good understanding of feline behaviour. In this episode, I chat through my main list of differential diagnoses when approaching these cases and how I use feline body language and facial expressions to help guide my decision making.   I talk about the most common physical health contributors to feline human directed aggression, how to differentiate between emotionally driven and predatory behaviours and how early life experiences, the physical and social environment and human-feline interactions can contribute to aggressive behaviours.   If you would like to learn more about Feline Behaviour, then my "Learn To Speak Cat" course is a great resource for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat   If you'd like support with a Feline case, then you can book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both!   And, if you'd like to learn more about Veterinary Psychopharmacology, my PSYCHOACTIVE course is the perfect fit for you! https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 106 – Multi-Cat Households - Treating more than just the Patients   Here in the UAE, I see many multi-cat households with behavioural presentations. These households can range from 2 to 32 (my biggest ever MCH!) cats and are hugely complex to understand, assess, evaluate and treat.   If you know anything about feline behaviour, you know that cats are socially flexible, non-socially obligate, obsessed with resources and often unable to reconcile differences or hostile relationships with other cats. This can lead to a whole host of problems including undesirable elimination outside the litter box, inter-cat aggression and physical health manifestations of stress.   In this episode I chat through my approach to large multi-cat households and how, even if the caregivers highlight only some specific cats in the household as showing problematic behaviours, I always consider the effect that these situations have on ALL the cats in the home.   If you'd like to learn more about Feline Behaviour, then my "Learn To Speak Cat" course is an absolute must for you! https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat   If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both!   And if you'd like some amazing Client Handouts to give to your clients to help them understand the situation and their pet a little better, then here is the link to my amazing Trinity Client Handouts E-Book: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/trinity-e-book   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Episode 104 – Why Behaviour and Pain are Intertwined   I had an incredible time at the WSAVA Congress in Rio and one of the things that I really took away as a musing from the Congress is the question as to whether or how we can differentiate pain from emotional states such as anxiety. We know that pain has an emotional component – often fear or anxiety – so do we therefore need to be more comprehensive in treating our painful patients by treating both pain and anxiety?   I'm not sure we have all the answers yet and we definitely don't have any research looking at this, however, my suspicion is that we probably should be treating both!   In this episode I give you my 3 top explanations of why pain and emotional state are so interwoven and intertwined and how I think about treating my Behaviour Patients that are also in pain!   If you'd like to learn more about the medications that can treat both pain and emotional state, then have a look at my AMAZING PSYCHOACTIVE course: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive   And if you'd like some help or input on a Behaviour Patient that is also painful then you can book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both!   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!

Introduction In this episode, we explore the power of integrating body, mind, and subconscious to release long-held emotional knots and reclaim wholeness. Our guest, Esin Pinrali, is a holistic psychotherapist and relationship expert specializing in imago therapy, brain spotting, internal family systems, and somatic practices. With her experiential approach, she helps people move beyond anxiety, trauma, and codependency to become fully alive and connected.     3 Key Takeaways Labels don't heal—untangling the root does. The body stores unresolved trauma and reveals the knots that block freedom. Regulation is unique—find practices that soothe your nervous system, not someone else's.     Main Topics 1. The Limits of Labels (00:10) “You're not broken and you're not here to get fixed. You're here to sort of untangle some of the roadblocks that are holding you back.” Labels can provide temporary relief, but they can also trap you in false identity. True change happens when the underlying knots are worked through, not when they're named. This shift creates space for transformation instead of self-limiting beliefs.     2. Healing Through the Body (12:00) “There's this emotional knot being held in the body… and you can't talk your way out of it.” Unprocessed trauma lives in the nervous system and resurfaces as automatic reactions. Bringing the body into the healing process allows old memories and energy to be completed and released. This frees you from subconscious loops and opens the door to different choices.     3. Nervous System Regulation and True Self-Care (29:00) “It's not a one size fits all approach. You are a unique individual. You need to try things on for size and see if it works for you.” Regulation isn't about copying routines or forcing “the solution du jour.” It's about discovering practices that genuinely calm your system. Whether it's nature, music, movement, or meditation, the right fit fosters resilience, flexibility, and authentic joy.     Connections: Visit Esin's Website Visit us: MarniBattista.Com Ready To Create Your Corporate Escape Plan? Asher's excited to spot dolphins—maybe Common Dolphins joining the ocean party, or Bottlenose, Pacific White-sided, and even the scarred Risso's with their doodle-like marks. We explore what dolphins eat (think fish, squid, shrimp, and even jellyfish), learn how orcas are actually dolphins (mind = blown), and gasp when a pod appears, circling and leaping around the boat like nature's own ballet. We play along in our imagination—snorkels, life jackets, and all—while respecting that in real life, wild dolphins need space. Underwater, we dive deeper into dolphin superpowers: echolocation clicks, signature whistles (each dolphin's name song), and self-awareness—yes, dolphins recognize themselves in mirrors! Then, we pivot to an important message—real dolphins face dangers like fishing nets and pollution. Small choices to recycle, reduce plastic, and protect the ocean are big wins for our sea friends. To wrap up, we sun-dry on the deck, feel joyful, and invite Culture Kids families to dream with us—seahorses, sea turtles, sea creatures not yet discovered.
