Growing up in Red Bluff, California, Chelsey Bushnell pictured her rope taking her to the biggest stages in rodeo.She roped calves and team roped, won back-to-back California high school state titles and carried that with her into college, once dreaming of becoming the first woman to rope at the NFR. Flash forward and her career did end up revolving around a rope—it just took a route she never expected.On this episode of The Score, Bushnell chats with host Calli Montague about moving from college rodeo into the marketing world, working with brands including Cactus Ropes and turning a trick-roping talent she learned as a kid into the recognizable Chelsey Trick Ropes social presence. What began with hours spent roping the dummy eventually grew into brand collaborations, her own trick rope and another way to make a living in the industry she grew up loving.Bushnell also explains why the trick roping has always been about more than entertaining people. The story is told of a businessman whose company was failing. Creditors were calling. He was desperate for some move that would turn things around. He went to his lawyer. "Rabbi," he said, "please give me one idea that could save my business."The rabbi thought for a long moment. Then he said, "All wisdom is in the Torah. "Chapter 11."I thought of that old joke this summer while reading Chapter 11 of a different book: Jim Collins's new book, What to Make of a Life. Chapter 11 contains two teachings that stopped me in my tracks. The moment I read them, I thought: I have to share these on Yom Kippur.The first teaching is what Collins calls the Mothershead Mantra. John Mothershead Jr. was a philosophy professor at Stanford. When Collins was an undergraduate, he invited Professor Mothershead, then in his late sixties, to dinner and asked him a question: "When you look back on your life, how do you sum up what you've learned from your long experience?"Professor Mothershead responded: "I reject your question." Then he explained:"There are two ways to go through life. The first is to ride through life sitting in the saddle looking backward. The second is to ride through life sitting in the saddle pointed forward. I'm the second. I have no interest in looking backward. I'm not done yet."There are two ways to sit in the saddle. Facing backward. Or facing forward.And on Yom Kippur, that raises a question for every one of us: How are you sitting in the saddle?

Bob Moorhouse worked for Pitchfork Land & Cattle Co. for four decades, and for most of his tenure he directed the historic West Texas ranch as general manager and vice president. Established in 1883, "The Forks" is located 80 miles east of Lubbock and stretches across 170,000 acres of both open rolling plains and brushy river breaks. Moorhouse was raised nearby and then built a career as a respected cowboy, horseman, rancher and manager. He turned the spotlight on cowboy life with his camera, packing it along as he covered thousands of miles horseback and publishing his photos in The Cattleman, Field & Stream, Quarter Horse Journal, Texas Highways and Western Horseman, as well as in his coffee table book, Pitchfork Country, published in 2000. Moorhouse has continued to make an impact on the cowboy world as a director for organizations such as the American Quarter Horse Association, Ranch Horse Association of America and the Working Ranch Cowboys Association. He and Linda, his wife of 53 years, now live in Weatherford, Texas.

Richard shows up to hear the students' pitches on their made up invention they want to create. Paris pitches her idea - tricked out first aid kits. Richard presses her on it but she doesn't back down and he loves it. She gets home and has a billion Dean messages. Lorelai seems like something is bothering this boy. She's like I don't know what his deal is. Richard has all the kids over to his house and he is absolutely eating this project up! Dean comes over to wash Rory's car. Lorelai is like hey bud maybe tone it down a bit. You're not losing Rory but if you keep this up, you will. Michel gets mad at Lorelai for telling his mom that he doesn't eat carbs! It's time to find out the winner of the project and...Rory's team doesn't win. Richard can't believe it! So he goes to talk to Headmaster Charleston and gives him a piece of his mind and demands a recount. Headmaster Charleston is like ok I just recounted and you still lose. Your project was in the running. Richard is like it's not my project, it's theirs! Charleston is like well they're not the one causing a scene, you are and he storms out. Unfortunately, it's also Friday night dinner. When they get there, it's clear that Emily has had herself a day. She says that Richard hasn't come out of his room since he got home. Lorelai tells Emily that maybe Richard should go to therapy. Emily isn't having it. WE DON'T GO TO THERAPY! Just then, Richard comes out of his study and he seems perfectly fine. He has news - he doesn't want to be retired. They head back to Stars Hollow and Rory asks to be dropped off in town. She'll call Dean later. For most non-human animals, if you think about it hard enough, you can place yourself inside their brains and assume their experience of the world based on their behaviour.  We observe, infer motivation, project our own experience onto theirs, and arrive at some rough approximation of an inner life. The further down the mammalian ladder you go, the easier this can seem. A small mammal wants food, wants sex, wants to avoid being eaten. A reptile might want much the same. Strip away the elaborate machinery of human society, and it's not really all that different from our own lives, at the end of it all. If there is something it is like to be something, something we can relate to through our own experience, then bang, you're in the territory of consciousness. Or so said Thomas Nagel in his 1974 essay, What Is It Like to Be a Bat? The essay became one of the foundational attempts to articulate the problem of consciousness: not simply what a brain does, but what it is actually like to be the thing possessing it. It is one of the enduring problems in the philosophy of mind, and one science has yet to put entirely to bed. But it's 2026 now, and the literature is due for an update. Surely it's about time someone wrote the follow-up:  What Is It Like to Be Mason Ho? One would imagine that, were we somehow able to peer directly into the subjective experience of Mason, to see the world, for a moment, as Mason sees it, the implications for our understanding of consciousness would be considerable. Is it like something to be Mason Ho? After watching this episode, it is difficult to say. What we can establish is that he is a gifted storyteller, and a particularly unusual one. In this episode, he touches on rubbing Andy Irons' face, punching Kelly Slater, forgetting his own age, his new passion for farming and how it has improved his surfing, being nice to judges even when he feels wronged by them, Jimi Hendrix, LSD, his dad and uncle, and much, much, much more.
