Arif es un apasionado divulgador y explorador del reino fungi, cuya relación con los hongos comenzó en su infancia en las montañas del Estado de México. Desde muy joven inició un camino autodidacta que combinó el aprendizaje de claves taxonómicas con el conocimiento tradicional de su comunidad. A los 16 años ya cultivaba hongos Pleurotus y desarrollaba proyectos de autosuficiencia en entornos urbanos, para luego profundizar su labor en Oaxaca, donde participó en iniciativas comunitarias de reforestación, cultivo e identificación de hongos silvestres, guiado por maestras y maestros especializados en taxonomía y técnicas avanzadas de cultivo. En 2014 fundó Simbiosis en San Miguel de Allende, un proyecto que inició como un esfuerzo de cultivo de hongos comestibles y medicinales y que hoy se ha transformado en un referente regional. Ha colaborado con distintas comunidades de Guanajuato para impulsar el aprovechamiento sostenible de recursos fúngicos, proveer productos gourmet a la industria restaurantera e introducir el micoturismo en la región. On this episode, we turn to Sudan where violence is escalating as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have seized full control of Darfur, including el-Fasher, amid reports of mass killings, ethnically targeted atrocities, and a worsening humanitarian crisis.  We'll speak with Dr. Arif Gamal, born and raised in Khartoum, Sudan.  Dr. Arif is a Nubian poet, environmental scholar, and author of Morning in Serra Mattu: A Nubian Ode. After earning a doctorate in environmental science in France, he moved to the U.S. as a Senior Fulbright Scholar at UC Berkeley. Gamal's work blends storytelling with reflections on history, identity, and the environment.
