On this Artist Spotlight episode, we visit with Grammy Award winning engineer, Michael O'Reilly.Michael is a Grammy Award winning engineer for his work recording and mixing Dianne Reeves' A Little Moonlight (Best Jazz Vocal Album). Michael is also the mixer/engineer of 11 Grammy Award winning albums and 6 Grammy Award nominated albums, as well as 15 Platinum,19 Gold and 8 Multi-Platinum records. Simply put, most of us have heard the familiar sounds he's captured. Take for instance the Prince song “I Feel For You”, recorded by Chaka Kahn, or the very first single, “You Give Good Love”, from Whitney Houston's debut album, Whitney Houston.Michael began his career at New York's legendary Atlantic Records Recording Studios as an assistant engineer where he honed his craft. He gained experience working with a range of mega artists-- from The Rolling Stones, Bette Midler, Average White Band, George Carlin, and James Taylor to Aretha Franklin and Charles Mingus. Michael had the distinguished honor of working alongside legendary Producer Arif Mardin on virtually all of Arif's projects over the last 30 years. In addition, he has taught as an adjunct instructor of Music Engineering at NYU.
Defying Barriers is the memoir of a man told by his own government to vanish — and who turned the threat into a business empire spanning two countries. In this interview with Irakli, businessman and author Sam Montši recounts how a 1987 order to "disappear" from military-ruled Lesotho drove him into apartheid South Africa, where he joined the mighty South African Breweries. There, he says, "I was the first Black general manager in the SAB Group at the time. And white people, sadly, were not used to having a Black person overseeing them. So some of them behaved in an unfortunate fashion, and I had to get rid of one of them." Montši explains the operating instinct behind a portfolio that broke barriers from fishing to shipbuilding — "a business needs to move, and move fast" — and reflects candidly on succession, recalling how his son Arif joined him: "Dad, I'm coming to work with you. I'm not coming to work for you. I'm not going to carry your briefcase." He reveres Nelson Mandela as a nation builder — "we were lucky to have him when we had him" — but delivers a stinging critique of Black Economic Empowerment, charging that it "has pitted the Black man against the white person, rather than getting them to work together," and that requiring white firms to take on Black partners is "in a sense, suggesting that Black people cannot create these things themselves." Montši also shares the leadership philosophy that carried him from a Soweto childhood to West African boardrooms: "for you to shine, you must make the people that work directly under you shine." He outlines in detail the journey of crossing boundaries others said could not be crossed — and what it means to now hand the family business to the next generation.

Lauren Arif alerts the podcast listeners to the dangers of self-pity by answering the following questions: Life is hard, so why is self-pity wrong when we are experiencing a trial? What are some biblical examples of self-pity, and how did God respond to that? Why is instruction or correction often a catalyst for someone to sink into self-pity? If someone has a habit of seeking pity from others, what might that look like, and how would you exhort them? How does practicing self-pity harm those around us? God often shows us mercy. How can this truth reshape our thinking when we are having a “pity party”? What practical strategies can someone practice when they sense self-pity pulling them down?Website: smilingatthefuturepodcast.com Email: smilingatthefuturepodcast@gmail.com Support The Podcast: https://donorbox.org/smiling-at-2024Recommended Book: "Dead End Desire: Biblical Strategies for Overcoming Self-Pity" by Phil Moser

Through his experience training as a monk and helping to build a monastery in the West, he reflects on how practice, service, and community are not competing priorities, but interconnected expressions of the same path. This conversation offers a grounded look at how the Dhamma can remain authentic while meeting the needs of a modern, diverse world, showing that with care and clarity, depth and accessibility can coexist without losing the essence of the teachings.✨ Key Takeaways:

In a recent episode of the GeriPal podcast, we explored whether the field of palliative care is in need of saving—and, if so, how to save it—with guests Ira Byock, Kristi Newport, and Brynn Bowman. Today, we shift focus to one actionable way to improve palliative care: through quality improvement (QI) collaboratives, registries, and benchmarking. To guide this discussion, we've invited three leading experts in the field—Drs. Steve Pantilat, David Currow, and Arif Kamal—who bring invaluable experience as pioneers in developing QI collaboratives and registries. Together, they authored a recent paper in JPSM titled "The Case for Collaboration to Optimize Quality," which underscores the importance of these efforts. In this episode, Dr. David Currow shares lessons from Australia's Palliative Care Outcomes Collaborative (PCOC), a national model for standardized data collection and benchmarking that has driven measurable improvements in palliative care. Meanwhile, Drs. Steve Pantilat and Arif Kamal reflect on the history of the Palliative Care Quality Collaborative (PCQC), a U.S.-based initiative formed in 2019 by merging the National Palliative Care Registry (NPCR), the Palliative Care Quality Network (PCQN), and the Global Palliative Care Quality Alliance (GPCQA). Although the PCQC had ambitious goals, it ultimately closed earlier this year. Together, the panelists unpack the reasons behind its closure and discuss the lessons future registries can take away from its challenges. Throughout the conversation, we tackle some of the field's biggest questions about registries and QI collaboratives: What data should be collected to create meaningful quality indicators? How can we minimize the administrative burden of data collection on clinicians? And how do we balance the risk of becoming narrowly focused "symptomatologists" with the need to maintain holistic, person-centered care? By addressing these questions, the panel highlights the immense potential of QI initiatives to enhance palliative care while remaining true to the field's core mission: ensuring that patients and their families feel deeply cared for during life's most vulnerable moments.
