Dan and Garrett are joined by filmmaker and illustrator Chris Tauber to talk about Alice Lowe's dark comedy PREVENGE. The gang discuss Lowe's tour de force as writer, director, and star of her film, which she made while eight months pregnant, as well as her character's arc and motivations and Lowe's editing choices that shift the audience's perspective on her character. Chris is the director of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RAILWAY, a horror short that is an I Like To Movie Movie favorite (and that Dan and Garrett happen to do the DVD Commentary for - you should buy it), and one of the creators of SURVIVOR GIRL, a horror web comic that we highly recommend. twitter | Facebook | tumblr | iTunes
How do you make a meta slasher movie in the mid-2000s without it being tired and late to the party? Well, making it a stealthy satire of true crime fandom is a pretty good starting place. Or: What if Cabin in the Woods had been made several years earlier by people who liked the horror genre a whole lot rather than being obviously, openly contemptuous of it? It's a pretty great hidden gem...but the screenwriters need to stop trying to make "Survivor Girl" happen. We've had a word for that for 30 years. 2:00 Wes Craven roots 4:00 The Vanilla Ice defense 7:00 Found footage 9:30 A cast of unknowns 14;00 That true crime shade 20:00 Stop saying "survivor girl" 24:00 "We couldn't get Donald Pleasence" 27:00 Leslie the sociopath 35:00 Those gender politics 40:00 Final girl as complicit 45:00 TURTLE MAN 49:00 Taylor woes 56:00 Cabin in the Woods 60:00 Should you watch this? John Carpenter’s Halloween with Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon co-writer David J. Stieve Jinx welcomes David J. Stieve to the show this week! Mr. Stieve is the co-writer of the fantastic satirical horror comedy Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and he’s chosen John Carpenter’s seminal slasher masterpiece Halloween for discussion. One of the greatest horror films ever made, Halloween inspires a conversation which touches on its themes, its “Ahab” and “Survivor Girl”, whether or not the film provides any sort of moral commentary on its teenaged characters, and the film’s many sequels and remakes. Along the way, Mister Stieve discusses how the film inspired Behind the Mask, and where that long-awaited Leslie Vernon follow-up is currently at. It’s a great chat with a wonderful guest, and is the perfect way to celebrate the season that’s now upon us! Be sure to subscribe to our show on iTunes, leave feedback, tell your friends about us, check out our YouTube show, use the Amazon links below to purchase Behind the Mask and Halloween, and give us a yell on Facebook and Twitter.
