This week on Hammer Pub, your hosts will still be sitting down with yet another marvelous Hammer horror film while having a few drinks and providing a running commentary on a gothic horror classic. At fifty episodes, your hosts have reached the end of their journey with the Hammer Pub (for now!), tackling the final Hammer horror film to have been released by this point - 2019's The Lodge. Joining them to send off the show is author, comedian, podcaster and Youtuber Philip Faiss! Perhaps we should apologize in advance for this episode of Foyeurism? This month’s movie was chosen because it falls into that very special category of movies so many of us have; films you have a soft spot for even though you cannot fathom why because you are fully aware the movie is utter dreck. Such a film is the ultra obscure video store barrel scraper titled The P.A.C.K. Or, as Foy gleefully describes it, “Starman vs. Predator” or the “Rocky V of Predator movies,” dubbed so since much of the movie boils down to the humanoid alien and a Predator wannabe punching each other endlessly in open fields, much to the dismay of Jinx. But then what do we know? I mean, this is an award winning film. It says so right on the VHS case. “Winner of Film Fantastic Award Best Sci-Fi Film 1997” And if anyone out there can confirm that such an award exists we’d love to hear from you because we damn sure cannot find any proof. For this second episode of our new Scream Addicts side project FOYEURISM, Jinx and Scott Foy were both slightly under the weather and suffering from a touch of brain fog, which, in retrospect, may not have been the best circumstances when having to discuss a film that virtually defies description: DEAFULA aka the first motion picture ever done entirely in American Sign Language. Even we were occasionally at a loss for words and just wanted to throw up our hands in the air trying to explain this psychotronic art film. Yes, art film! Despite having one of the goofiest titles in movie history, would you believe Deafula is actually a black & white, mostly silent, quasi-religious art film about a seminary student cursed with vampirism searching for the horrifying truth about his lethal affliction while questioning God on the nature of good and evil, all set within a cinematic world in which everyone is deaf and can only communicates via sign language? It’s also a frequently preposterous film that features a hunchback with soup can hands, a detective who uses peanuts to crack the case of the vampire killer, a magic ring, and a protagonist who frequently transforms into a Bela Lugosi-inspired vampire actually named Deafula who, for reasons unknown, boasts a big phony Cyrano de Bergerac nose. This truly one-of-a-kind celluloid curio runs the gamut from creepy, artistic, and poignant to disorienting, ridiculous, and, yes, even a tad pretentious. We’ll try our best to tell you all about one of the most fascinating horror films you’ll ever hear about (that wasn’t even made for the hearing)! The Scream Addicts lineup continues to expand! In addition to the flagship show and Hammer Pub, we’re now introducing a brand new, monthly series which will find your stalwart host Jinx at the mercy of notorious schlock jock Scott Foy as they tackle a single movie of Foy’s choosing. Rest assured, these are not your normal horror films. Each episodes free-wheelin' discussion will focus on a cinematic oddity of Foy's choosing that's shock or schlock value, possibly both, warrants merit even if this film itself does not fall into the traditional realm of film criticims. Movies whose strengths are their weakness and weakness are their strengths. Prepare to peer into the funhouse mirror of filmdom and see them through the warped eyes of FOYEURISM. For our first episode, we buy two tickets to watch an amusement park go down in flames thanks to matters of the unexplained in the genre-bending 1979 made-to-television thriller THE DEATH OF OCEAN VIEW PARK. The tried and true tropes of Seventies-style disaster, supernatural, and Love Boat quality romantic dramedy collide in a one-of-a-kind oddball opus that includes a pregnant psychic woman witnessing premonitions of doom, romantic subplots that are wrong on so many levels, Martin Landau rocking the finest fashions straight out of the 1979 Sears catalogue, and a climax that is as bonkers as it is impressive, culminating with the demolition of an actual full-scale rollercoaster. It's a bizarre little slice of polyester era made-for-TV mayhem that has mostly fallen through the cracks, but here we are to crack this thing wide open for your entertainment. It’s another crazy side project for Scream Addicts that we’re hoping you’ll love! Before their commentary, the trio chats the Gerard Butler disaster film Greenland, the new version of Stephen King’s The Stand, Willy’s Wonderland, and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Once the film begins, the three discuss their overall feelings on the film, Andrew Keir’s Father Sandor vs. Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing, Christopher Lee’s feral and mute performance, Joss Whedon, and…Jinx may or may not sing Happy Birthday to Paul?! A Scream Addicts veteran at this point, Foy has chosen Jon Hall’s 1965 horror flick The Beach Girls and the Monster for discussion this week. Kicking off with a deep dive into the film’s shallow plot, the trio attack the film’s scant story elements, the dodgy writing and thing characters, and its absolutely bonkers ending. Afterwards, Foy puts forth an interesting theory about the film’s place in slasher film history, back up with a list of tropes from that very subgenre! After the main chat, the guys continue on chatting about such things as long movie runtimes, Lawnmower Man 2, the current state of the theatre industry, and…Freejack?!
