Welcome to Stupid Hearts Club. The Entertainment Community for everyone with a creative, open, loving, romantic and gloriously stupid heart!-------------------Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.Alice Lowe is possibly the most fruitful creative person I know. In fact, when I went to her house, even her actual fruit bowl contained turnips, bananas, peppers, a pomegranate and much much more. I think that image kind of works as a very strong analogy for her output. As the reigning indie queen of UK cinema Alice has already delivered three cult classics with Sightseers, Prevenge and last years Timestalker, and in my opinion she is only just getting going. This chat is part 2 of a recording I did when I visited her near Stroud in my camper van Linda. This weeks chat is more about Alices career and our shared (and differing) experiences as UK writers in and around the world of comedy and the arts. It's a fantastic conversation that any budding or (struggling) creative will benefit from. There is a section of the conversation that is a little compromised by a zip or a button tapping Alices mic that I could not get rid of as it's woven into her words. So sorry about that, but I still think its v listenable, and Alices wisdom and wit will see us all through.EnjoyyyyStupid Hearts Club Forever Baby-------------------If you enjoy what I do and would like to help support all the time and effort I lovingly put into the world of Stupid Hearts Club, which now includes, podcasts, live music events, music collabs and more, then please consider becoming a paid subcriber to my Patreon! Hannah, Yosra and Mick are all big fans of Alice Lowe. But will that translate into loving Timestalker, which she wrote, directed and stars in? Does an excellent supporting cast (Tanya Reynolds, Jacob Anderson, Nick Frost and Aneurin Barnard) get enough to do? And will the fast cuts and repetition leave them confused or swooning? Find out! Welcome to Stupid Hearts Club. The Entertainment Community for everyone with a creative, open, loving, romantic and gloriously stupid heart!-------------------Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.A couple of weeks back I took my darling Linda the camper van on another rain-sodden jaunt. This time in the direction of Cardiff, where I was to stay a couple of nights with my good pal Conor, before using 'Search For Sites' again to find somewhere to get my head down on the way back. First I headed to Porthcawl for a little admin errand that brought a very sweet surprise with it. At the end of the episode I am poised to go and visit Alice Lowe to record the episode that will follow this one. It wasn't my best stopover choice but making underwhelming choices is all part of the journey and always gives something for you lot to laugh at me about. In this case, a very disappointing carvery failure.Am looking forward to the nights getting lighter and will soon be putting more Vanventures in the diary so please feel free to suggest stop-offs and places for me and Linda to visit. You might even end up on the podcast.Beep Beep!Stupid Hearts Club Forever Baby-------------------If you enjoy what I do and would like to help support all the time and effort I lovingly put into the world of Stupid Hearts Club, which now includes, podcasts, live music events, music collabs and more, then please consider becoming a paid subcriber to my Patreon! He broods magnificently in HBO's Interview with the Vampire, but actor Jacob Anderson shows his looser side in Alice Lowe's romantic comedy Timestalker, landing in US theaters and on demand this Valentine's Day. And he's here to share the gospel of Hot Rod, the 2007 comedy that brought Andy Samberg and his pals in The Lonely Island to the big screen a bit before the big screen was ready for them. Your genial host Norm Wilner, though? He was ready.

“I think a lot of my work is about aspiring to something lofty. And then failing at it. Which I find funny”, says Alice Lowe, director and star of ‘Timestalker', showed on the Piazza Grande at the 77th Locarno Film Festival. In a free-flowing conversation on her influences and artistic aspirations, Lowe – a major star of UK sketch comedy of the 2000s, director of “Prevenge” and co-writer of “Sightseers” – sat down on Locarno Meets to talk through the sheer Britishness of her latest time travel comedy extravaganza, influenced by everything from Sally Potter to Powell & Pressburger to “Doctor Zhivago”, and getting her start at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival walking through a giant tambourine.

While Lee tries to fold time and space making a long video shorter and faster but also longer. And he also watches the second season of The Old Man on Disney+ After that its on to a couple of questions in Asking for Trouble and finally we move on to a nice holiday around National Trust land with Alice Lowe, Steve Oram and a fine pair of crochet knickers as we review Ben Wheatleys Sightseers. One of the most recognizable faces of British cinema, known best for “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”, actor Nick Frost stopped over at Locarno to show his latest film, the centuries-spanning time travel romantic comedy “Timestalker”, on the Piazza Grande. While in town, he sat down for a conversation on Locarno Meets to discuss the genesis of this one-of-a-kind new movie, expound on his admiration for director Alice Lowe – another beloved staple of British television comedy – and reflect on what it means to play a pretty evil dude across dozens of historical eras on screen.

Lucy Fenwick Elliott speaks to Alice Lowe, the writer, director and star of Timestalker, as well as the film's leading men, Nick Frost and Aneurin Barnard. Timestalker is a bawdy reincarnation rom-com romp that will take you back to the past, and then into the future. From the creative team behind Prevenge comes a romantic comedy about the eternal humiliation that is the search for love, spanning the most romantic epochs of history right into the future. Timestalker follows hapless heroine Agnes (Lowe) through time as she repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, gets reincarnated a century later, before meeting him again and starting the cycle anew. It is one story told over many periods, all with the messy thrills and spills that come with daring to follow your heart. Or maybe your loins... Agnes' only hope in avoiding this violent fate is by finally reaching spiritual enlightenment; but how can she ever wise up when she's destined to be a fool for love? Some lessons are just too hard to learn in one lifetime. If you'd like to send us a voice memo for use in a future episode, please email podcast@picturehouses.co.uk. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. It's time for that summer break you deserve, as we turn our attention to Lady Jennifer's Birthday choice - Ben Wheatley's magnificent “Sightseers”. A film which teaches you that G.B.H. stands for Great British Holiday; that dogs and knitting don't mix; and that, at a push, faecal matter can be an interesting alternative to lipstick. The minds of writers/stars Alice Lowe and Steve Oram blend perfectly with director Ben Wheatley's cinematic (and sometimes brutal) vision in this pitch black comedy that pulls no punches; transposing the serial killer road movie over the mundanity of a pair of British misfits on a camping holiday. A film for anyone who knows that true horror is being trapped in a caravan, having a row, in the pouring rain. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

Through his career he's won everything, worked for the best agencies in the business, and the visual techniques he uses to squeeze every ounce of juice from an idea are frankly unparalleled. The pair have joined forces to pen and produce ‘The Howard Gossage Show', a fitting celebration of the fun and fame peddling ad man; one of the industry's lesser known greats. We gossip on Gossage's showmanship, breaking conventions, having half an interesting conversation through his ads, writing to somebody, stunts, fame, and so much more. At a time when advertising is disliked and avoided by most people, his legacy feels even more important now than it was 60 years ago. So listen up. ///// Here's The Howard Gossage Show Follow Steve and Dave on LinkedIn Check out Dave's Stuff From the Loft And Steve's biography on Howard Gossage Timestamps (02:34) - Quick fire questions (Posh Spice or Persil?) Episode 2 of Series 2 sees another crossover with the Best Pick Podcast as another of its hosts Jessica Regan (our second guest after Tom Salinsky) joins to talk about the 2012 darkest of dark comedies Sightseers. Jess provided unparalleled insight into director Ben Wheatley's process, starring as she did in his 2009 sketch show The Wrong Door. We take a closer look at The Wrong Door, a show in which dinosaurs are dates, Pirates hijack commuter trains and Matt Berry puts John Virgo's trick shots in the shade, as well as a deep dive into Wheatley's third feature-length film, which became the first big screen starring roles for comedy collaborators Steve Oram and Alice Lowe. It helped to have a voice of Irish sanity to help assess a movie that so precisely captures a slice of English eccentricity, repressed anger and downright insanity! We also take a look at the use of double, double pop covers for needle drops and a supporting cast of some of the British movie industry's very best bit players. How would Guy and Rob get on with Jess' questions on the Oram and Lowe and could we have a new contender for the top spot? Find out in episode two. En este episodio conversamos sobre la película del año 2007, “Hot Fuzz” del director Edgar Wright, protagonizada por Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent y Timothy Dalton.
Ah-ha! Two of the most acclaimed British directors of the 2010s take centre stage in this episode, albeit with very, very different films.Christopher Nolan originally envisaged his dreamy heist movie Inception as a low budget feature. But just after he'd made Insomnia, he got 80 pages into what he felt the film should be and hit a stumbling block. Two Batman movies and The Prestige later and he finally began to crack it - and things built from there. It was a lengthy journey too to bring the dark British comedy Sightseers to the screen, a road that began when Alice Lowe and Steve Oram started working on the two lead characters in an Ealing comedy club. And - with a helping hand from Edgar Wright - their work would come to the attention of a fast-rising director by the name of Ben Wheatley...The stories of both films are told in this episode. ---Film Stories print magazines can be found at store.filmstories.co.uk---Find Simon on Twitter and Bluesky at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstories Hosted on Acast. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode don their red raincoats to celebrate the 50th anniversary of haunting British thriller Don't Look Now. Originally released in 1973, Don't Look Now is a spine-tingling psychodrama in which Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play a married couple grieving the death of their young daughter in Venice. Adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier and directed by Nicolas Roeg, the film manages to be an eerie occult chiller, a heart breaking meditation upon love and grief, and a shaggy dog story with a grisly sting in its tail. Ellen speaks to Allan Scott, who co-wrote the screenplay for Don't Look Now with his partner Chris Bryant, about his memories of the film, including its notorious sex scene, and about his long working relationship with Nicolas Roeg. And Mark talks to two filmmakers for whom Don't Look Now has been a touchstone. Writer, actor and director Alice Lowe reveals how the film, and an encounter with Nicolas Roeg, influenced her black comedy thriller Prevenge. And the director of Another Round, Thomas Vinterberg discusses the impact Don't Look Now has had on his work, and the new resonance he finds in the film following the tragic death of his own daughter. Where do we get those wonderful guests? This week's Empire Podcast brings you the audio from our recent Empire VIP Club Q&A with the one, the only Michael Keaton, on the occasion of his return to the role of Batman in Andy Muschietti's The Flash. Hear Keaton talk to Alex Godfrey about why he signed on to play Batman for Tim Burton, coming up with that voice, and the fun he's having reteaming with Burton on Beetlejuice 2, and then sign up to the Empire VIP Club, why don't you, so you can experience events like this in person. Our other guest this week is the wonderful Alice Lowe, who talks to Mike Muncer about her Take That musical comedy, Greatest Days, and about what we can expect from her next film as a director, Timestalker. Then, in the podbooth, Chris Hewitt hosts and is joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for a dissection of the week's movie news, reviews of The Flash, Extraction 2, Pretty Red Dress and Greatest Days, and come up with a brand new musical. Also, with inspiration failing to strike on the question front, they return to an old favourite and ask which director owned the Noughties. [Note: if your favourite director isn't mentioned, chances are they were, and we cut it out. That's our story, and we're sticking to it.] Enjoy! What do a vampire, a pregnant lady, a pious nurse, a film censor, and an urban legend have in common? They're the main characters that appear in the final part of our trilogy of episodes focusing on women horror directors. Get ready for some fresh new blood, as we discuss five movies from the past ten years!I don't know about you, but if I lived in a place called Bad City, I may not be too excited to be out walking alone at night. Of course, if I were a vampire, I would probably be a lot more confident about it. Which just happens to be the case in Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014).Not having the personal experience, I cannot be certain, but it seems like pregnancy might make me want to kill people, just in general. But her unborn child is actually very demanding about Ruth knocking off certain people. I guess that it probably just doesn't feel right telling her no. Which leads to a little Prevenge (2016), from writer, director, star Alice Lowe.Maud seems like a responsible, polite caregiver. As long as you don't mind that she gets a little hung up on saving your soul. And she might have a history of doing things that are somewhat unhinged. Filmmaker Rose Glass introduces us to Saint Maud (2019)Ah, the video nasty era. The perfect setting for a horror movie about a film censor. But Enid cannot seem to let go of a tragic event from her past. It's an obsession that leads her down a path of self-destruction in Prano Bailey-Bond's Censor (2021).Didn't we talk about this guy before? We sure did! But this is a totally different guy. Director Nia DaCosta lets us in on a little secret. That a number of unfortunate souls have been cursed to fill this role. Try your best to stay away from mirrors! And definitely don't say Candyman (2021) five times!
In continuation of woman's history month, the low-budget 2016 film Prevenge is reviewed. This British comedy slasher is written by, directed by and stars Alice Lowe in her directorial debut. Kip shares her men vs women experiences as an Uber driver. They also have a PSA: Don't buy reptiles for children & don't accept free drinks from weirdos, ladies. Polling all British people: what does it mean to really ‘know your onions', & do you really use the expressions: fanny, shit tip, proper shag, & gobshite? Also what do mental health checks look like for expecting mothers in the US vs the UK? Check out Serbian artist Slavko Vorkapich's 1934 film The Furies
