We loved The Substance. The performances were fantastic, the story was entertaining, and the effects were great. It was sexy, funny, and gross. Its slew of Golden Globes nods have us very excited about the movie and the future of genre cinema. Final Destination 6 is a different story.Ray Wise and Lin Shaye in a holiday horror movie sounds like a great idea. As a matter of fact, Dead End from 2003 does a lot of things right. Creepy road horror tends to be fun, there is a good kill or two, and there are even some funny moments. Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good. The film does not get the atmosphere right until it is just about over, most of the gore is told instead of shown, and none of the comedy seems to be intentional. Worst of all is the title. It is so on the nose that it will end up slipping by some people. To top it all off, it has the type of ending that pretty much everyone hates.Replicator gets off to a great start. This is quickly followed up by a looooooong courtroom scene that ruins all the goodwill that was built. As it turns out, the open was just a tease while what followed is a more accurate portrayal of what the movie actually is. And that is not even the worst of its problems. It's been a long time coming, but another horror franchise was looming large in my to do bin for episode content. I've tackled some of the modern classics, and with The Conjuring franchise in the rearview mirror, it dawns upon me to take on the other Patrick Wilson spooky multi-movie series. So Insidious o'clock, here we are.If you like hauntings and family dramas with emotional resonance, this is the franchise and episode for you. I break down the confusing, but important, chronological order you should watch these in, show you who the real MVP and main character of the franchise is, and lastly, try not to, but inevitably compare Insidious and Conjuring.Make sure to let me know what you think of this horror franchise. Hit me up on social to share if you have had any emotional resonance or tears shed watching any of these movies at @NickNackMovies or @NickNack_IC on Instagram, Tik Tok, Letterboxd or Twitter. It may surprise you which movie I cried at.

This week we keep the Stephen King Summer rolling with the Netflix special In The Tall Grass! We had a lot of fun with this movie! I mean, have you seen how hot Patrick Wilson is (always) as a crazy midwestern dad? And how creepy are those grass people? But how uncomfortable is that birth scene?! Whew. And not even the weirdest thing we'll cover this summer. (see last week-Dreamcatcher). Also we imagine what it would be like to be blessed by the presence of Lin Shaye. To start off the holiday season, Aaron and Derek tackle 2003's French horror film "Dead End" written and directed by Jean-Baptiste Andrea and Fabrice Canepa. They discuss the tonal whiplash between the psychological breakdown of a family and sudden comedic beats, fears of family and travel during the holidays, and how Ray Wise and Lin Shaye carry the movie. They also get into why the soundtrack doesn't work, the comparisons with the Twilight Zone, why it doesn't feel like early 2000s French horror, and many other aspects of the flick. Aaron wants to save some pie for Derek. He's dead. Okay. We are on PodBean, Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, Goodpods, Amazon Music, Google, Stitcher, Spotify, and CastBox.
