AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports firefighters continue battling a major wildfire burning west of Athens.

Holly Fretwell, author of Fix America's Forests: Reforms to Restore National Forests and Tackle the Wildfire Crisis, examines the escalating wildfire crisis in the United States, arguing that current forest conditions are the result of over a century of mismanagement and man-made policies. Fretwell highlights the "10 a.m. rule," a historical policy of suppressing all fires, which disrupted natural fire cycles and led to dangerously over-dense forests filled with "fuel" like woody debris and small-diameter timber. Consequently, modern fires burn hotter, faster, and more destructively than in the past. The author describes a cultural shift within the Forest Service, which has evolved from a management-focused agency into a "fire company" dominated by firefighting personnel at the expense of foresters and engineers. The book identifies significant regulatory hurdles to restoration, specifically the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Endangered Species Act, and the Clean Air Act. These laws often lead to "analysis paralysis" and litigation, stalling critical restoration projects for decades even when they aim to protect vital resources like water reservoirs. To address these issues, Fretwell proposes public-private partnerships and innovative funding models, such as forest resilience bonds, to finance restoration work up-front. She also advocates for longer-term stewardship contracts (up to 20 years or more) to provide the certainty needed for private investment in milling infrastructure for small-diameter wood. Ultimately, the goal is to restore forests to a more open, resilient state through active management, prescribed burns, and harvesting, thereby reducing the risk to communities in the growing wildland-urban interface. A sociologist believes New Zealand First's latest policy won't tackle falling birth rates. The party's announced a Kiwi Kids Fund, which would give citizen families $5000 a year for the first three years of a child's life. The grant would be limited to a family's first three children and would be tax free and not means tested. Massey University's Paul Spoonley says fertility rates are low, but this won't fix that.
