Welcome to Stupid Hearts Club. The Entertainment Community for everyone with a creative, open, loving, romantic and gloriously stupid heart!-------------------Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.Alice Lowe is possibly the most fruitful creative person I know. In fact, when I went to her house, even her actual fruit bowl contained turnips, bananas, peppers, a pomegranate and much much more. I think that image kind of works as a very strong analogy for her output. As the reigning indie queen of UK cinema Alice has already delivered three cult classics with Sightseers, Prevenge and last years Timestalker, and in my opinion she is only just getting going. This chat is part 2 of a recording I did when I visited her near Stroud in my camper van Linda. This weeks chat is more about Alices career and our shared (and differing) experiences as UK writers in and around the world of comedy and the arts. It's a fantastic conversation that any budding or (struggling) creative will benefit from. There is a section of the conversation that is a little compromised by a zip or a button tapping Alices mic that I could not get rid of as it's woven into her words. So sorry about that, but I still think its v listenable, and Alices wisdom and wit will see us all through.EnjoyyyyStupid Hearts Club Forever Baby-------------------If you enjoy what I do and would like to help support all the time and effort I lovingly put into the world of Stupid Hearts Club, which now includes, podcasts, live music events, music collabs and more, then please consider becoming a paid subcriber to my Patreon! You will have immediate access to a well stocked treasure trove of really cool extra podcast bits, and you will be first to know about stuff like merch, news, and forthcoming plans to create an actual membership club, that means you will be able get into all SHC music nights and events for FREE. “I think a lot of my work is about aspiring to something lofty. And then failing at it. Which I find funny”, says Alice Lowe, director and star of ‘Timestalker', showed on the Piazza Grande at the 77th Locarno Film Festival. In a free-flowing conversation on her influences and artistic aspirations, Lowe – a major star of UK sketch comedy of the 2000s, director of “Prevenge” and co-writer of “Sightseers” – sat down on Locarno Meets to talk through the sheer Britishness of her latest time travel comedy extravaganza, influenced by everything from Sally Potter to Powell & Pressburger to “Doctor Zhivago”, and getting her start at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival walking through a giant tambourine.
Episode 40: The Horror Alphabet | M-R This episode was recorded on September 4, 2024 and posted on October 26, 2024. Content Warning: Light vulgarity. Introduction Welcome to No Bodies Episode 40 Introductions to your Ghosts Hosts with the Most - Lonely of Lonely Horror Club and Projectile Varmint aka Suzie Happy Spooky Season from No Bodies! Introductions to our guest - Horror Heart aka Libby Roach Today's Topic: The Horror Alphabet Part Three Welcome Back to the 2nd Annual October Special on No Bodies! The Horror Alphabet - our longest watchlist to date, featuring bests, worsts, and deep cuts from every letter of the alphabet! This will be a blind reaction recording - which means none of the hosts are aware of what the others are bringing to the table. The only notes we will have prepared are the ones for our own recommendations. The Horror Alphabet Rules For films that begin with "The," the film will begin with the first letter of the first word following "The." Example: The Awakening would begin with the letter A. For films with multiple words in the title, the film will begin with the first letter of the first full word. Example: I See The TV Glow would begin with the letter I. For films that begin with a number in the title, the film will begin with the first letter of the first word. Example: 28 Days Later will begin with the letter D. We will not be including any films with titles made up of just numbers, like 1922. This week my guest is the amazing ALICE LOWE! Alice is an incredible comic actor who you'll know from her films Prevenge and Sightseers, as well as tons of other comedy including Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. We chatted in advance of her new film TIMESTALKER (out in all good cinemas NOW) and covered all manner of crushes from Peter Pan, to Jareth the Goblin King. I absolutely loved chatting to her and sort of wish we'd done it after I'd seen the film (I have, it's great) as there are so many Crushed themes to explore within it. We'll have to come back for Part 2... And just a reminder that I'm going to be interviewing KERRY GODLIMAN at the Cheerful Earful festival on Saturday 19th October - tickets available here: https://cheerfulearful.podlifeevents.com/festival/crushed-by-margaret-cabourn-smith-live-from-cheerful-earful-podcast-festival-19th-oct-tickets Love and kisses, MCS xxx Learn more about your ad choices. Lucy Fenwick Elliott speaks to Alice Lowe, the writer, director and star of Timestalker, as well as the film's leading men, Nick Frost and Aneurin Barnard. Timestalker is a bawdy reincarnation rom-com romp that will take you back to the past, and then into the future. From the creative team behind Prevenge comes a romantic comedy about the eternal humiliation that is the search for love, spanning the most romantic epochs of history right into the future. Timestalker follows hapless heroine Agnes (Lowe) through time as she repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, gets reincarnated a century later, before meeting him again and starting the cycle anew. It is one story told over many periods, all with the messy thrills and spills that come with daring to follow your heart. Or maybe your loins... Agnes' only hope in avoiding this violent fate is by finally reaching spiritual enlightenment; but how can she ever wise up when she's destined to be a fool for love? Some lessons are just too hard to learn in one lifetime. If you'd like to send us a voice memo for use in a future episode, please email podcast@picturehouses.co.uk. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode don their red raincoats to celebrate the 50th anniversary of haunting British thriller Don't Look Now. Originally released in 1973, Don't Look Now is a spine-tingling psychodrama in which Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play a married couple grieving the death of their young daughter in Venice. Adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier and directed by Nicolas Roeg, the film manages to be an eerie occult chiller, a heart breaking meditation upon love and grief, and a shaggy dog story with a grisly sting in its tail. Ellen speaks to Allan Scott, who co-wrote the screenplay for Don't Look Now with his partner Chris Bryant, about his memories of the film, including its notorious sex scene, and about his long working relationship with Nicolas Roeg. And Mark talks to two filmmakers for whom Don't Look Now has been a touchstone. Writer, actor and director Alice Lowe reveals how the film, and an encounter with Nicolas Roeg, influenced her black comedy thriller Prevenge. And the director of Another Round, Thomas Vinterberg discusses the impact Don't Look Now has had on his work, and the new resonance he finds in the film following the tragic death of his own daughter. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Just how crazy can pregnancy really get for a stressed out single-mom to be? Let's all find out together!
Christian and Ian of It's Only a Podcast join Caitlin to cover the 2016 horror comedy Prevenge. Prevenge is a revenge-centered monstrous motherhood movie, and it hits its comedic beats exactly right. Alice Lowe really pulled off something special here. We also talk about upcoming releases for spooky season, vidja games, and air travel. And we even play Smash or Pass with some of our favorite final girls. Be sure to check out It's Only a Podcast! It's good stuff.
What do a vampire, a pregnant lady, a pious nurse, a film censor, and an urban legend have in common? They're the main characters that appear in the final part of our trilogy of episodes focusing on women horror directors. Get ready for some fresh new blood, as we discuss five movies from the past ten years!I don't know about you, but if I lived in a place called Bad City, I may not be too excited to be out walking alone at night. Of course, if I were a vampire, I would probably be a lot more confident about it. Which just happens to be the case in Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014).Not having the personal experience, I cannot be certain, but it seems like pregnancy might make me want to kill people, just in general. But her unborn child is actually very demanding about Ruth knocking off certain people. I guess that it probably just doesn't feel right telling her no. Which leads to a little Prevenge (2016), from writer, director, star Alice Lowe.Maud seems like a responsible, polite caregiver. As long as you don't mind that she gets a little hung up on saving your soul. And she might have a history of doing things that are somewhat unhinged. Filmmaker Rose Glass introduces us to Saint Maud (2019)Ah, the video nasty era. The perfect setting for a horror movie about a film censor. But Enid cannot seem to let go of a tragic event from her past. It's an obsession that leads her down a path of self-destruction in Prano Bailey-Bond's Censor (2021).Didn't we talk about this guy before? We sure did! But this is a totally different guy. Director Nia DaCosta lets us in on a little secret. That a number of unfortunate souls have been cursed to fill this role. Try your best to stay away from mirrors! And definitely don't say Candyman (2021) five times!
Grab your blankets and snacks as Lucy is joined by writer Cynthia to discuss Under the Shadow (2016) and Prevenge (2016). Join us as we discuss patriarchal society and the expectorations put upon mothers and pregnant people. Email - ghoulfriendspodcastt@gmail.com Twitter - @GhoulfriendPod

Welcome back for another dose of Don't Know Her? and this week, we are focussing our first full episode on a Scottish performer! And is the wildly talented Kate Dickie. Kate may be familiar to many for popping up in some TV favourites like Game Of Thrones, but we want her to be celebrated much more for her terrific film work. This episode allows us to explore some types of film we haven't so far as we dive into a handful of her works and chat about Red Road, The Green Knight, The Witch, For Those In Peril, and Prevenge. Following this, Michael tests Scott's ear for Scots accents in our audio quiz. From there, we pose our wishes for Kate's hopefully fruitful future in film. Scott was particularly excited to celebrate a homeland hero, but Michael became a fully-fledged fan after this episode. Hopefully, you will be sold on Kate too. Enjoy this episode and then come find us on social media! Most serial killings end with a death, but what if all it took to stop one was… a birth? If David Berkowitz was told to kill people by an unborn baby instead of a dog, you'd have something like the 2016 dark comedy slasher Prevenge. Actually, if Spike Lee had made Summer of Sam as a comedy starring a pregnant lady set in England he probably wouldn't have been nominated for “Worst Supporting Actor” at the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.
In continuation of woman's history month, the low-budget 2016 film Prevenge is reviewed. This British comedy slasher is written by, directed by and stars Alice Lowe in her directorial debut. Kip shares her men vs women experiences as an Uber driver. They also have a PSA: Don't buy reptiles for children & don't accept free drinks from weirdos, ladies. Polling all British people: what does it mean to really ‘know your onions', & do you really use the expressions: fanny, shit tip, proper shag, & gobshite? Also what do mental health checks look like for expecting mothers in the US vs the UK? Check out Serbian artist Slavko Vorkapich's 1934 film The Furies

This week, we are joined by Georgina Allan, film editor for the Radical Art Review to talk about women in horror, specifically focusing on Julia Ducournau's Raw and Alice Lowe's Prevenge and their representations of women as complex protagonists and instigators of violence (as opposed to helpless victims or mindless monsters). Picks of the week include Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson's mind warping, beautiful Synchronic and Channel 4 series Adult Material, a three-dimensional, intelligent and nuanced look at the world of porn and the tendrils that reach into all spheres of public and private life.
