Anna's co-hosts over at The Barren's Hideout podcast, Big D and Little D, joined us tonight in an assault on Charlie's person for his contemptuous opinion on Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. As always, even though Charlie didn't care for the film, he gave it a fair review and his points were spot on, unlike his revulsion for Cutie Honey and Thirst, of which his opinions are wrong and he should be ashamed about himself. Leslie Vernon is a big thumbs up from everyone who's name isn't Charlie.

In this remarkable 100th episode of Genre Exposure, we do our usual just a bit early and usher 2024 to a close with a final look back over the year. First, we reflect a bit on the podcast itself and go over some things we learned and struggled with during the year and highlight some of our favorite moments and share just a few regrets. After that, we take our stab at proper top 10 lists and go over some of our favorite film discoveries we made this year. This will be Jason's last episode for the year as he gears up for a very special vacation. Join us in wishing him well on his trip. Dustin will continue his J-Horror Journal to close out 2024 and look for Genre Exposure to return proper in full force next year. To everyone that has tuned in, left a comment, or even reached out with feedback, thank you so much. We really appreciate it and it means the world to us. This week, we fielded a longstanding request from several of you, and brought on board one of those lucky listeners, Neal, to discuss in-depth a clever meta-horror pseudo-documentary that neither Craig nor Todd had seen before. But oh boy, did we enjoy this one! Full of fun cameos and clever takes on the slasher genre conventions, it twisted and turned in places we both expected and didn't expect at all - with a killer ending to boot! Enjoy, folks!

The Out Now with Aaron and Abe horror specials for 2024 are here, and to start things off, we're taking a look at some great horror films that didn't necessarily lead to more for whatever reason. The Brandon Peters Show's Brandon Peters, JoBlo's Jimmy O, and Film Seizure's Geoff Arbuckle all joined in to go over their picks for one-hit horror wonders. Listen in to enjoy hearing about a series of films this group is either quite fond of or at least wants to recommend, despite the fact that the filmmaker involved either never made another horror movie or at least never delivered another feature matching the acclaim of their breakout feature. On this episode, I'm starting off my September Sleeper series. Showcasing a few horror films that in my humble horror nerd opinion are great sleeper gems. First up, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006). Come follow a documentary crew as they follow slasher Leslie Vernon before his big day. This horror comedy mockumentary gives us a wonderful peek behind the curtain of slashers. We also have a ton of horror easter eggs, cameos and looks at the horror tropes we all know and love. Rising to the height of its popularity in the 80's with franchises like “Friday the 13th”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Halloween” and many others, the slasher genre has proven itself to be one of the most enduring sub-genres of horror. Its popularity has of course ebbed and flowed with a resurgence in the 90's thanks to the success of films like “Scream” and “I know what you did last summer” but the slasher genre has also seen more than its share of duds with filmmakers mistakingly believing that all that an audience expects from a slasher film is a killer in a mask and nubile flesh for him to dispatch. It is the successful deconstruction of the slasher sub-genre in films like “Scream” and the less seen but equally clever “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon” that have allowed the slasher film to evolve past the tropes that had begun to hold it back. One new film that embraces, innovates and captures the true spirit of the slasher film is “Deer Camp 86'” and in this episode we are joined by three of the films stars, Jay J. Bidwell, Brian Michael Raetz and Josh Dominguez.“Deer Camp 86'” is available now on blu-ray and streaming but I recommend you grab the blu-ray from our friends over at Cinema 1 and listen for a discount promo code during the episode. We sat down to talk about what makes Deer Camp 86' stand out from the slasher crowd and how the film begins and feels like one kind of film but ends up becoming something else altogether. Why steps forward in inclusiveness are vital to the future of horror. The challenges of shooting on location and building a rapport in an ensemble cast and why the director chose to use a pseudonym for his billing on the film. So, pack your mosquito repellent and throw on your camo and let's visit “Deer Camp 86”! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Our not-quite-lost-but-certainly-long-delayed review of BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON (2006) is here! As mentioned in our SPOOKIES review, we recorded this episode back in January, but wanted to come back from hiatus with something else before this episode was released. Big thanks to everyone who voted for this movie in our Robert Englund poll, and apologies for the delay! Up next is our fourth annual "Doug Jones Day" episode, and we're very excited for everyone to check it out. We'll be reviewing THE DARKLING, a USA tv-movie from the year 2000 starring Aidan Gillen and F. Murray Abraham. In the meantime, if you would like to read more about the Jesse Malin medical fund mentioned in our opening, you can do so at this link: https://www.sweetrelief.org/jessemalinfund.html And as always, thanks so much for listening! In this episode, we are joined by our first ever special guest: Chris the 4k Outlaw. Together we sit down to gush over our shared love of slasher films and dig in with his selection for this episode: The Final Girls from 2015. Jason weighs the film's PG-13 rating against the surprisingly emotional heart the film has while wondering what could have been. Dustin lays down some research on the enduring trope of the final girl. And while your regular hosts marvel on just how under the radar this film has gone, Chris details his own experience championing the movie when it first debuted. But before all that, we dish on our experience going to see Evil Dead Rise together and recount our history with the franchise. And so much more! In this episode, hosts Katherine Troyer and Toni Tresca talk the post-modern and incredibly "meta" 2006 horror-comedy film Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. Episode Highlights: We discuss the film's commentary on the slasher genre and, in particular, how this movie's final girl character (Taylor Gentry) becomes a stand-in for the sometimes uncomfortable position of being a fan and scholar of horror. We examine the mockumentary style of the cinematography and when (and when not) it works for us. And we think about what this film asks us to think about when it comes to our continued fascination and love for a genre that kills us. A Dose of Scholarship: We explore Savanna Teague's excellent analysis of the film in her 2017 article "Ahabs, Turtles, and Survivor Girls: Postmodernism in Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" from Studies in Popular Culture. And we reference, again, Isabel Pinedo's seminal piece "Recreational Terror: Postmodern Elements of the Contemporary Horror Film." This podcast episode first aired on May 1, 2023.
