Brian is dedicated to turning Steve into a Jack Sholder fan. First it was Renegades. Then he didn't hate Freddy's Revenge as much. And now he's trying to get Steve to love Kyle MacLachlan's first turn as an FBI agent. But before he chased the embodiment of evil in Twin Peaks, he chased a giant space slug beetle in LA. Today Matt & Todd discuss Jack Sholder's 1987 Sci-Fi-Crime-Action-Thriller: The HiddenWritten by Jim KoufStarring: Michael Nouri, KyleMaclachlan, and Chris Mulkey/William Boyett/ClaudiaChristian/Jake/Clarence Felder/John McCann as their identity-shifting alien nemisis. The Hidden was a HBO and VHS staple for us in the late 80s and early 90s. Heavy rotation in the early days but largely forgotten over the last 30 or so years. Sergeant Tom Beck starts his day investigating a brazen, violent bank-robbery and car chase in the middle of the day. Seems mostly normal enough, but he later meets FBI Agent Lloyd Gallagher and learns that this runs deeper into a ring of criminals who seem to be from different walks of life butall share a love of violence and sports cars. What unfolds is a genre classic that we loved then, and love it today. We couldn't find this one streaming free in the US, but the DVD or BluRay will be well worth its place in your collection.Relive this one again or watch it for the first time.Thank you all for listening!----------If you're in the mood for something but you just can't decide, peruse one of more than 100 themed lists by Matt on Letterboxd. ¡Gracias y feed the cvlt!
PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Jack Sholder (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2, THE HIDDEN, ARACHNID, WISHMASTER 2) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his career journey. From his beginnings in entertainment as a trumpet player… to his obsession with cinema leading to his eventual career path working as an editor on such classics as THE BURNING (1981)… to becoming a feature director wrangling the “interesting” character that is Jack Palance in the cult-classic ALONE IN THE DARK (1982)… to his stories from the making of 1985's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE (the “tongue” story is a particular gem)… to his particular choice of lens sizes when crafting one of the best car chases from the 80's in THE HIDDEN (1987)… to what it was like directing the late James Earl Jones in his acclaimed HBO movie BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT (1990)… there's a good reason why Jack was one of the most consistent working directors in the fledgling New Line Cinema roster!
We're finishing this Halloween season with a rare instance of a scream king by discussing A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge from 1985, directed by Jack Sholder. In addition to talking about homosexual subtext for the second episode in a row, we also: have our first guest, Danielle!; another Rita's Italian Ice rant; psychoanalyzing a sex dream featuring Nicole Kidman; spontaneous combustion; legitimate discourse; and some rounds of Kiss, Marry, Kill.

Julius en Jasper bespreken twee cultfilms van regisseur Stewart Raffill: Mac and Me (1988) en Tammy and the T-Rex (1994).
The Hidden is a R rated film of car chases, alien parasites, and a crime mystery gone wrong. In this action packed 1987 cult classic many genres are blended together to create this interesting tale.An FBI agent and a local LA cop team up to hunt down a bizarre criminal that has killed, stolen and has been on a terror spree. Little does the local cop know, but he is in for a wild ride that involves a extra terrestrial mystery. The both keep following a string of murders from seemingly random people but eventually realize they are actually after an alien symbiote who has enjoyed their life on earth a little too much.Directed by Jack Sholder, and starring Kyle MacLachlan as Lloyd, Michael Nouri as Tom, Claudia Christian as Brenda, and William Boyetts as one of the hosts. Also with a special appearance of Danny Trejo as the punk in jail.
Welcome back to the Bad Dads Film Review, where today we're diving into the cult classic depths of The Hidden (1987), a film that blends the thrills of sci-fi, the pace of action, and the intrigue of crime drama into one unforgettable cinematic experience. The Hidden, directed by Jack Sholder, is a gem from the late '80s that may not have dominated the box office but has since garnered a loyal following for its innovative take on the alien invasion trope. The film sets itself apart by embedding its extra-terrestrial terror in a gritty, urban crime story. The story kicks off with a seemingly straightforward crime spree, but we quickly learn there's an alien entity hopping from body to body, driving its hosts to commit violent acts. Enter FBI agent Lloyd Gallagher (played by Kyle MacLachlan), who knows more about this interstellar threat than he initially lets on. Partnered with a seasoned LAPD detective, Tom Beck (Michael Nouri), the duo embarks on a mission to stop this alien force before it can complete its mysterious mission. The Hidden thrives on its blend of genres, offering more than just your typical '80s action or sci-fi fare. It delivers car chases, shootouts, and a compelling mystery, all while exploring themes of identity, humanity, and the unseen threats among us. Kyle MacLachlan's performance, fresh off his role in "Blue Velvet," adds a layer of intrigue and otherworldliness perfectly suited to the film's tone.Despite its initial under-the-radar release, The Hidden has since been recognized for its creativity, influence on the genre, and as a launching pad for Kyle MacLachlan. It's a film that deserves a spot in the conversation about the best sci-fi action movies of the '80s, thanks to its smart script, tight pacing, and innovative concept. So, whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer curious about this cult classic, The Hidden is a thrilling ride from start to finish, proving that sometimes the best cinematic treasures are the ones you have to dig a little deeper to find. Join us on Bad Dads Film Review as we uncover the legacy, the lore, and the lasting appeal of The Hidden.

Ricky and his shy, reserved cousin Angela are spending the summer at Camp Arawak, a bargain basement overnight camp in upstate New York run by Mel, cigar-chomping shyster, and staffed by a bunch of adult and teenage degenerates. Angela is initially withdrawn, occasionally catatonic – but is soon brought out of her shell by Ricky's friend Paul, who takes a liking to Angela in the hopes he might be able to make it with her before summer's end. But there are forces are at work – forces determined to put the strangely distant Angela in her place. Bunkmate and camp harlot Judy sees Angela as a weirdo, then a threat when she attracts Paul's attention. Counselor Meg, who can't get Angela to eat, play sports, or swim, constantly berates Angela for her failure to thrive. That's when the murders begin, one at a time, first a staffer, then a camper, and on and on. Mel tries to hide it due to the bad publicity, but as any good camp director knows, murder's bad for business, and the more we learn about Angela's murky past, the more things at Camp Arawak take a turn… for the deadly. A body-swapping alien and a canister of liquid Satan. What? Yeah, that's pretty much it. And both movies have ordinary people being used as puppets of evil! 1987, how could you?Guns, explosions, bank robberies, murder! Stealing Ferraris! And cassettes from a music store? When will this madness end? Well, probably when a cop and an FBI agent put the awkward "getting to know you" phase behind them and get to work. Enough with the awkward dinners at home, go find this maniac! But even with all of the destruction left in its wake, finding this villain might be more challenging than you think. Because they're chasing, The Hidden (1987)!John Carpenter reveals to us, a well-kept secret in a run-down church in Los Angeles. A canister of primordial liquid, locked from the inside, guarded by The Brotherhood of Sleep. If this sounds intriguing, then you may want to put your skills in mathematics and science to the test, and join the group of grad students who are working to unravel this ancient religious mystery. Of course, you do run the risk of becoming a pawn, serving the Prince of Darkness (1987)!And you know that the Common Craig has a Top 5 Horror of 1987 prepared to share with you!

On this episode of Talking Terror, with Pride Month coming to a close, The King of Horror Andy G was inspired for his film pick of the week. When planning (Marc's Miserable) #MARVELousMay, we couldn't wait to watch GENERATION X, directed by veteran genre filmmaker Jack Sholder (THE HIDDEN, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2, RENEGADES) to see how he contributed to the first live-action X-Men movie! In our interview, we discuss the making of the 1996 TV movie about the world of teenage mutants, as well as his beginnings as an editor with New Line, writing WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? (which was nearly a New World movie), his Tales From the Crypt episode, and his other films, including RENEGADES and 12:01, plus working on the 1991 Jeff Speakman movie THE PERFECT WEAPON! Don't miss out on this epic conversation!
Joe and Graham sit down to watch the 80's slasher Alone in the Dark, a movie with a wonderful cast and fortunately for all of us, not that piece of garbage from Uwe Boll.
The guys struggle to stay on track as we check out the 1987 Sci-fi The Hidden, directed by Jack Sholder. We also announce the winners to our Rucking Fotten give away.
THIS WEEK: Alone in the Dark (1982), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), and The Hidden (1987). Jack Sholder might not be a household name when it comes to horror and sci-fi directors, but he should be. Unfortunately, one of his best films shares a title with a maligned 2005 Uwe Boll joint, another is unfairly labeled the worst in a classic franchise, and then there's one that you never bothered to watch. Shameful. Well, we're here to fix all of this. Long live Jack Sholder, king of unheralded 1980s studio shlock. The movie was directed by (likely homophobe) Jack Sholder and written by (definite homophobe) David Chaskin in 1985. Robert Englund reprised his role as the man of your dreams himself, Freddy Krueger, only this time he wasn't terrorizing kids in their dreams, but was trying to take over the mind and body of one, Jesse, played by Mark Patton. This film oozes homoeroticism and has some not-so-subtle gay undertones, but production did not set out to make it that way! How did a film meant to be homophobic turn out so homoerotic? How did Mark Patton embrace the "final girl" horror film trope? Where did all the scary dream sequences go? Don't fall asleep before listening to Jake and Kevin ponder these and more on this week's episode! With this week's Disney villain, it's definitely the pirate's life for me, HONEY. 1953 introduced us to the swishy swashbuckler Captain Hook, famed arch enemy of Peter Pan. While he isn't as overtly flamboyant as some other villains later, he sets the stage for the sissy to take center stage of Disney villainy. He even has a cute gay sidekick, Mr. Smee! Never say neverland!

In this episode, we pick up where we left off with Jack. We talk a little about Nightmare 2, and the intimidation of not only taking on a sequel to a blockbuster, but doing so on a very tight deadline. Jack reminds us of the importance of who the camera is on, and why watching someone react is better than watching someone talk. He also tells us about the mentorship of Martin Landau, trying to direct Jack Palance, and the brilliance of Erland van Lidth. Find out more about Jack here: IMDB Facebook

From the mind of House on Haunted Hill creator William Malone comes a Geoffrey Wright film, that became a Walter Hill film, that became a Jack Sholder film and that became a final product that was disowned by everyone involved. Yup SUPERNOVA starring James Spader, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robin Tunney and Peter Facinelli is an ideal candidate for our WTF column. Rivals ALIEN 3 in terms of production woes. What was to be a modest HELLRAISER meets DEAD CALM in space opus became a production clusterf*ck. The 1980s served as the home to many great horror films but it was also a decade defined by sequels, especially when any movie found success with theater goers. The immense popularity of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984 led New Line Cinema to immediately shift gears to a sequel that would ultimately be released less than a year later. Unfortunately, original director Wes Craven declined to return despite being offered the gig because he found the script by writer David Chaskin just too ridiculous and he wanted no part of the next film in the franchise. That's when “Alone in the Dark” director Jack Sholder took over the project and he cast a relatively unknown young actor named Mark Patton in the lead role in a gender bending swap from a final girl to a final boy. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from critics with some praising the performances from the new cast with others pointing out the overtly homoerotic themes that highlight nearly every major scene in the movie with one publication eventually calling the sequel “the gayest horror film ever.” Set five years after the original film, Jesse Walsh and his family move into the infamous house where Nancy Thompson was once terrorized in her dreams except this new teenager is actually fighting off Freddy Kreuger from taking over his mind, body and soul…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to do some pushups and make sure the bird cage is locked as we review the 1985 sequel “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge”…
