Todays guest is Kirstan Wilding, Leader of Corporate Social Responsibility at TasNetworks. We first met Kirstan when she delivered a keynote at a conference we attended and we knew after listening to her we wanted to have her as a guest on the podcast as soon as we could make it happen. Kirstan is an extremely grounded and emotionally intelligent leader who shares with us some incredible insights she has learnt along her leadership journey. 07:20 - The daily focus of being a leader of corporate social responsibility 10:40 - What has helped Kirsten understand and define her purpose 15:00 - The times of adversity that has shaped Kirsten into understanding and defining her purpose How adversity shaped her leadership journeyHolding true to Authenticity and purpose during adversity 20:00 - Learning to show up as your whole self in leadership, and therefore opening the door to trust within your teams showing vulnerability in both challenging times but also success and achievementModelling vulnerability as a leader 23:30 - Self Awareness and Self Reflection as a leader 25:50 - By modelling vulnerability as a leader you open up the safe space for others to do so 28:00 - Being comfortable with sitting in the uncomfortable 32:15 - Working through change within the organisation with resilience and excitement 33:18 - Actively listening as a leader. Have you ever seen reflecting devices on power lines or birds perched above the lines? These engineering solutions are part of a push towards sustainability in the power system to reduce the risk that threatened birds, like the Wedge-tailed Eagle, will be injured by the power lines. Listen to this episode to learn more about the risk mitigation approaches and engineering practices which TasNetworks takes with guests Mandy Fish and Thomas Webster, and to learn more about what you can do to support this sustainability effort. Martin Agatyn speaks with Lance Balcombe, CEO of TasNetworks.
TasNetworks says it will try and avoid contentious areas when it constructs part of the transmission line from the Robins Island Wind Farm, while the Nietta Action Group is anxious to hold talks regarding the route of the transmission line to the grid.
Sustainable Timbers Tasmania have agreed to preserve leatherwood stands in their eucalypt plantations for Tasmanian beekeepers, and TasNetworks says the second interconnector across Bass Strait is more than likely to go ahead, which will benefit farmers.
Monday 22nd October 2018“Thinking Big” takes us to the Pilbara where CWP is planning to export gigawatts of wind and solar energy by undersea cable to Jakarta. Vivien Langford talks toAndrew Dickson Andrew Dickson about getting the social licence for this break through project to export renewable energy to Asia. What is the environmental impact and who will underwrite the finances for such a mega project? Giles ParkinsonWe talk to Giles Parkinson editor of REneweconomy who has been following this project, with enthusiasm. He also outlines how pumped hydro energy storage can solve the headaches of “FIRMING”. As some leaders create anxiety around the transition from coal and gas, listeners do not panic when the sun doesn’t shine etc, there are many minds converging round these problems and we want to keep you up to date. How could Tasmania become the Battery of the Nation? At the AFR Energy summit Vivien heard a lot about gas as the way to achieve firming intermittent wind and solar power. But it is still a fossil fuel.Steve DaveyBenjamin WhiteThen she met Steve Davey from TasHydro and Ben White (Head of stakeholder relations, Community, Environment and Planning for The Marinus Project at TasNetworks) from the Marinus Project. They are thinking big. They tell us all about how as Victoria’s coal fired power retires gracefully, the energy stored by pumped hydro in Tasmania can be brought by the undersea Marinus cable to the eastern states. Is this project in competition with Snowy 2.0 or do we need both sources to firm up the energy supply? Is pumped hydro better than gas for firming?Producer :Kurt Johnson, Podcasts: Roger Vize and Interviews: Vivien Langford
In this podcast we had the pleasure of talking to Linn Purdon, on the line from Tasmania, about her recent experience as a participant in a game changing TasNetworks trial. Linn was one of 600 customers in southern Tasmania who were offered advanced metering services and smartphone apps to help them track and manage their energy usage in a time-of-use capacity. Also on the line was TasNetworks’ Kirstan Wilding, who explained some of the drivers behind this exciting trial and the overall response to the initiative. As always, if there’s a topic you want to know more about in Australia’s energy systems, please contact us at media@aemo.com.au
