Power can be rapidly stripped away from individuals, or it can be taken away layer by layer. Not everyone makes it out of a cult, but life can become particularly meaningful when they do. A new purpose can arise for the person, more substantial than the grasp of mind control. Leaving an authoritarian cult is the experience that Dr. Debbie Haski-Leventhal, PhD, shared with us on this episode of Cult Conversations: The Influence Continuum. She found this meaning after a period of healing and self-exploration when she left the Kabbalah Centre. Her parents brought her into it when she was only five years old. She devoted her life to it as a chevre (hand-picked servants of Philip and Karen Berg, its leaders). She was able to escape by age nineteen. Debbie currently describes her role as “a professor of purpose and impact”, working with individuals and companies to make lives more meaningful. She crafted her book after decades of exploring what pro-social and satisfying behaviors bring to life. Her book is both inspirational and practical, laying out pointers from the model she developed. She believes strongly in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and works with business leaders to better utilize their human resources into meaning on both an individual and group basis. I must say, I loved this book, listened to it as an audiobook, and then bought it as a paperback and read it. It is a must-read book, in my opinion, for all survivors of mind control cults. It is an inspiration! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming increasingly critical for both corporations and nonprofits. Our cohosts dig into the nuances and potential of CSR partnerships. Cohost Tony Beall begins by defining CSR as "what organizations commit to in terms of how they want to represent their brand to the community," encompassing environmental, ethical, social, philanthropic, and economic responsibilities. The duo discuss the strategic importance for fundraisers to understand these distinct CSR pillars to enhance their approaches. Cohost Julia Patrick admits, "I just lumped it all together," pointing to the common mistake nonprofits make. Tony expands on this concept, describing how nonprofits must align specifically with a company's CSR goals to effectively establish mutually beneficial relationships. The discussion explores the intersection between CSR and cause marketing. Tony differentiates the two clearly: "CSR is focused on doing good as part of the business operation…cause-related marketing is how you express what's happening, how you engage customers."Ethical alignment also becomes central in the conversation, citing the value for nonprofits to choose corporate partners whose activities align with their mission and values. Julia speaks to the weight of ethical decisions and the challenge when nonprofit leaders reject lucrative but misaligned partnerships. Tony concurs strongly, remarking, "You have to have those standards within your organization." The two also talk about the practical need for clearly articulated agreements through ‘Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)', described as a necessary "formal handshake". This formality, rather than inhibiting relationships, provides clarity and aligns expectations, further nurturing a more sustainable corporate partnership. Finally, they emphasize relationship nurturing and the critical importance of asking corporate sponsors about their reporting and engagement preferences. Tony says powerfully: "It is so important that we understand what is valuable and important and motivates the individual donors and the corporate supporters."Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Donald Chew discusses the evolution of corporate finance, emphasizing the shift from old-fashioned corporate finance, which focused on steady earnings growth, to modern corporate finance, which aims for high returns on capital. He highlights the decline of conglomerates in the 1970s and the rise of private equity. Despite criticism, Chew argues that modern corporate finance has been a success story, citing the doubling of U.S. public company market capitalization in the 1980s and the significant correlation of R&D and selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A) expenses with corporate value. He also addresses the financial crisis, arguing it was due to mispriced mortgages and government policies, not market inefficiencies. Donald Chew is the founding editor of the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, and joins show host Gene Tunny to discuss his latest book, The Making of Modern Corporate Finance, published by Columbia University Press. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com.About this episode's guest: Donald ChewDon Chew is the founding editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance (JACF), a publication he started almost 30 years ago. This is the #1 listened-to episode from the Purpose and Profit podcast. We're doing a rerun, so if you're new to the podcast, you don't miss this great conversation. Professor Mark Kramer is a senior fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and a former senior lecturer at Harvard Business School and visiting lecturer at the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. He is also a co-founder and advisor with both FSG and the Shared Value Initiative. Mark has worked with leading companies around the world to find sources of competitive advantage by incorporating shared value into their business. Shared Value is defined as “policies and operating practices that enhance the competitiveness of a company while simultaneously advancing the economic and social conditions in the communities in which it operates.” He is also a member of the Creating Shared Value Advisory Board at Nestle. Alongside Harvard Professor Michael Porter, Mark has helped to introduce new concepts such as catalytic philanthropy, collective impact, impact investing, and shared value. His course “Purpose & Profit” teaches creating shared value to both MBA's and executives alike. In this episode, we discuss: How Paypal is impacting thousands of small business owners How an insurance company expanded the average lifespan of their customers by 10 years Why government and NGOs won't be able to solve the world's biggest problems Key Takeaways: How you do business is a choice. Instead of setting a bar of “do no harm” we can choose to act in a way that will leave the world better off because we existed. We can aim to delight future generations by the choices we make today. The examples Mark shared were so powerful at illustrating how, when a purpose is embedded into the heart of the business, it impacts innovation, identifying new revenue streams, and ultimately impact consumers in a positive way. When looking for businesses that are purpose-led and focused on shared value, Prof Mark Kramer instructs his students at Harvard Business School to look for companies that don't have a separate Corporate Social Responsibility or Sustainability department. If these activities are separate, they are rarely business integrated. What a great point, and a great reminder to business leaders. If you want your company to stand for something, and lead in that thing—whether it's being the most sustainable company in your industry, or like PayPal, democratizing access to financial tools—everyone in the company should be working to make it happen, not just one department. This contrasts with earlier models that handled each modality separately, signifying a shift towards more holistic AI systems that mirror human sensory processing.AI Integration in Operating Systems: The conversation delves into how AI, like Apple Intelligence, is being integrated directly into operating systems, enabling more intuitive interactions such as device management and on-device tasks. This advancement brings AI closer to daily use, ensuring privacy by processing data locally rather than relying on cloud-based systems.Neuralink and Transhumanism: Anand and Stewart discuss Neuralink's potential to bridge the gap between human and artificial intelligence. Neuralink's brain-computer interface could allow humans to enhance cognitive abilities and better compete in a future dominated by intelligent machines, raising questions about the ethics and risks of such direct brain-AI integration.Cultural Feedback and Learning: Anand emphasizes the role of cultural feedback in shaping human learning, likening it to how AI models are fine-tuned through feedback loops. He explains that different cultural environments provide varied feedback to individuals, influencing the way they process and adapt to information throughout their lives.Cybersecurity and Distributed Systems: The discussion highlights the dual-edged nature of distributed systems in cybersecurity. While these systems offer increased freedom and decentralization, they can also serve as breeding grounds for financial crimes and other malicious activities, pointing to the need for balanced approaches to internet freedom and security.Generative Biology and AI: A key insight from the episode is the potential of AI models, like those used for language processing, to revolutionize fields such as biology and chemistry. Anand mentions the idea of generative biology, where AI could eventually design new proteins or chemical compounds, leading to breakthroughs in drug discovery and personalized medicine.Positive Social Impact Through Technology: Anand introduces a thought-provoking idea about using AI and data analytics for social good. He suggests that technology can help bridge disparities in education and resources globally, with models being designed to measure and optimize for positive social impacts, rather than just profits or efficiency.
"If what you are doing is not important, and if you don't think it is going to lead to something important, why are you at Bell Labs working on it?" – Richard Hamming This week, join Cyrus Palizban and new guest, David H. Solomon, professor of finance at Boston College, as we discuss David's work on behavioral finance, media roles, and recent research on birth rates. The discussion centers on a quote by Richard Hamming about importance, which David connects to his own work, namely: the intricacies of birth rates, the impact of child car seat laws, and how local diversity affects fertility rates.
