I started my hike up Mount Douglas, hoping to spot the Canadian Navy vessel Raven 56. Navigating trails like Harrop and Power Lines, I reached Glendenning and checked my app, which confirmed the ship's position. Unfortunately, the glare on the horizon made it impossible to see or photograph the vessel, so I changed plans and began my descent via Irvine Trail. Along the way, I took photos, reflected on my morning, and slipped on wet rock, reminding me of the challenges of downhill running. Despite missing the ship, I enjoyed the outing, recorded bird sounds, and saw it as another good experience for my podcasting journey.
The most important energy regulators in the United States aren't all in the federal government. Each state has its own public utility commission, a set of elected or appointed officials who regulate local power companies. This set of 200 individuals wield an enormous amount of power — they oversee 1% of U.S. GDP — but they're often outmatched by local utility lobbyists and overlooked in discussions from climate advocates. Charles Hua wants to change that. He is the founder and executive director of PowerLines, a new nonprofit engaging with America's public utility commissions about how to deliver economic growth while keeping electricity rates — and greenhouse gas emissions — low. Charles previously advised the U.S. Department of Energy on developing its grid modernization strategy and analyzed energy policy for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. On this week's episode of Shift Key, Rob and Jesse talk to Charles about why PUCs matter, why they might be a rare spot for progress over the next four years, and why (and how) normal people should talk to their local public utility commissioner. Hudson Gilmer is the co-founder and CEO of LineVision. LineVision is a Series C-stage startup helping utilities monitor and increase the capacity of the vast network of transmission lines that serve as the vascular system of the U.S. electric grid. The U.S. transmission grid spans 600,000 to 700,000 circuit miles of high-voltage lines, connecting energy generation with consumption and delivering power across the country. This infrastructure typically lasts for decades, yet much of it was built before the advent of sophisticated software-based monitoring or persistent connectivity.LineVision provides a non-contact sensor and software system that detects issues with transmission lines and enables grid operators to safely increase their capacity—critical in an increasingly electrified world where grid constraints limit power delivery and building new transmission lines is a slow, multi-year process. We explore all this and more in our conversation with Hudson. In this episode, we cover: [2:06] An overview of transmission as one of the backbones of infrastructure in the US[7:00] LineVision's focus on high-voltage, long distance lines [8:53] Hudon's background and LineVision's origin story[12:41] LineVision's customers and who they work with[14:33] An overview of LineVision's product [19:31] How seasonality plays into transmission capacity [22:53] The lifespan of typical transmission lines [25:10] The future of transmission line monitoring [28:11] LineVision's funding to date [31:05] How LineVision's business could be applied in the future[33:30] How monitoring facilitated grid security[35:42] LineVision's new customersEpisode recorded on Jan 30, 2025 (Published on Feb 13, 2025) Enjoyed this episode? It's claimed a response is required on a municipal district level in Clare to ensure the extent of damage caused by Storm Éowyn is never seen again. It follows a meeting of Clare County Council last evening, which called for an extensive plan to be put in place to remove trees in close proximity to power lines. At the peak of the storm, over 44,000 homes and businesses here were without electricity. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke, says the county was lucky to get away relatively unscathed, but claims urgent measures are needed to prevent future damage.
A Clare farming representative insists common sense must prevail when it comes to landowners being allowed to cut trees near power lines. Thousands of homes and businesses remain without electricity this morning as ESB crews continue their efforts to restore power to those still experiencing outages following Storm Éowyn. A major cause of electricity outages in rural Clare has been trees falling on overhead power lines. O'Callaghan's Mills farmer and Secretary of the Clare branch of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association Martin McMahon says too many trees are located near power lines and farmers should be allowed to cut them down.

Welcome to Paranormal Spectrum, where we illuminate the enigmatic corners of the supernatural world. I'm your host, Barnaby Jones, and today we have a very special guest joining us:Bruce Rapuano a B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in Neurobiology and minored in Psychology, a Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology from the University of Connecticut and a J.D. from New York Law School. Dr. Rapuano has conducted independent biomedical research as a cell biologist at internationally recognized medical institutions including the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery, both located in New York City. He has authored or coauthored thirty scientific articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He has published articles on topics such as the role of membrane phospholipids in nerve function, the skeletal effects of cancer metastases, metabolic bone diseases and the coordinate surface electrical and biological properties of titanium alloy implant materials. Dr. Rapuano has also worked concurrently as a medical research scientist and Associate Radiation Safety Officer at the Hospital for Special Surgery. This bombshell nonfiction book, recently discussed by the author with George Knapp on Coast to Coast AM, is the only first-person account to date of UFO alien abductions authored by a mainstream American scientist. The author, who has multiple degrees in neuroscience, goes on the record regarding his incredible and fascinating experiences with UFO close encounters, including a very close encounter during which he was abducted from a group of eight other witnesses, interactions with alien beings and an unexplained nasal implant of specific structure all of which were consciously recalled without regressive hypnosis. The detailed conscious recollection of these experiences, including unexplained physiological effects and physical scars, checks every box in the modern core alien abduction scenario AND predated the publishing of any other books on alien abduction. Another remarkable aspect to this book is the fact that it is the first to explain exactly how the grey aliens were genetically reengineered from our early hominin ancestors. Also riveting are the author's interactions with short humanoid beings that are described in captivating detail to reveal all the ways that aliens control human behavior during the abduction process possibly with the aid of neural implants. This is the story of a mainstream scientist's own interactions with the highly advanced alien beings who abducted him and at least thousands of other people. As discussed in Dominion Lost, compelling technological evidence of the alien presence, especially with respect to incredibly advanced UFO propulsion systems and implanted devices that are likely instruments of mind control, has existed on this planet for more than 60 years. More importantly, this book is a wake-up call to our species to finally accept the reality that we are now sharing our world with technologically superior alien beings. This new reality must be addressed immediately.https://www.amazon.com/DOMINION-LOST-Abridged-Bruce-Rapuano/dp/B0CQGDXV8NClick that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Charles Hua, Founder and Executive Director of PowerLines, a new nonprofit organization aiming to modernize utility regulation to accelerate affordable, reliable, and clean energy for American consumers. He is also an energy analyst who has worked at Rewiring America, DOE's Loan Programs Office, and now at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a research affiliate.Charles wants people to pay attention to the enormous influence that public utility commissions (PUCs) have on the U.S. energy transition, and get involved with this long-neglected area, pushing for a utility regulatory system that can better serve American consumers, grow the economy, and support communities. His concern is that most states have an outdated utility regulatory system that is not prepared to tackle modern energy challenges. He also claims that there are 200 commissioners controlling the monopolistic utilities at the heart of America's electricity system, with over 200 billion dollars in utility spending.By engaging with the people, policies, and processes needed to deliver on this agenda, PowerLines approach is to pull together a big tent coalition of people interested in public utility commission (PUC) reform, including PUC staffers themselves, state legislators, clean energy providers and customers, academics and researchers, as well as grassroots groups. They'll serve as a hub for modernizing utility regulation by bringing together these diverse stakeholders to share ideas, resources, and solutions on a path forward to effective utility regulation.Charles and Ted dig into the problems with PUCs, discussing the unrestrained, unregulated authority over the U.S. electricity system. With the immense power and significance on the country's clean energy future, Charles highlights opportunities for reform, including the revision of statutes, the effectiveness of integrated resource plans, decarbonization, equity, and creating more latitude or space for regulators to embrace a more forward-thinking, innovation-oriented mindset.

The increasing demand for power is prompting challenges from a number of tribes who say the means to transmit that power is harming culturally significant tribal land. The Tohono O'odham, Hopi, Zuni, and San Carlos Apache tribes were dealt a legal setback by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year in their opposition to a proposed $10 billion transmission line through a pristine Arizona canyon. And pueblos and other tribes say they are concerned about additional transmission capacity planned to boost power at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. In both cases, tribal officials say the proposals did not adequately take cultural and archaeological significance into consideration. This week we're joined by the band Dogstar with members Keanu Reeves, Robert Mailhouse and Bret Domrose. Make sure you check out their new album ‘Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees' because we get into a lot of it this episode.
