On this episode of Takeaways, I had the privilege to connect with Tina Quigley, who became the President and CEO of LVGEA (Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance) as of February 2022. Prior to that, she was CEO of the RTC (Regional Transportation Commission) for 14 years. In addition to her career accomplishments, Tina is also a licensed pilot. Although she does not currently fly planes, she has been flying successfully in the community and continues to be a leader in Las Vegas every day.  If Not You, Then Who? Tina's second-born son was born with a liver problem that required him to have a liver transplant and she didn't know if he was going to make it for the first two years of his life. Today he is healthy and successful. However, the extreme stress and many sleepless nights exposed Tina's most extreme and vulnerable sides. This event made her more aware of her own capability to deal with stress, her strength as a fighter, and her natural abilities to lead.  Tina has been called a fighter for good reason. On this podcast, she shared her mantra: “If not you, then who? If not now, then when?” If you see something that is not right, it is up to you to force the conversation. Tina is someone who will go to bat for the gaps that cannot be ignored.  Key Takeaway: Know When to Lead and When to Listen to Bring People Together When Tina first came to Las Vegas, she worked at McCarran International Airport, (now Harry Reid International Airport). During her time there, the Director of Aviation at that time shared inspiring and insightful words that stuck with her. “Never forget that you work for the community.” The lesson was the tax payers in this community were really the source of her paycheck. This perspective impacted her and focused her work ethic to this day.  Tina is someone who loves to work and enjoys being a high-performance leader; something that is truly part of who she is. When she became the leader of LVGEA, she made it her mission to make sure the entire community knows what LVGEA is and how it impacts the community. In order to do that, Tina connected with others and went on a listening tour. She gathered insights to better understand the role of LVGEA within the community, both the good and the bad. It's the LVGEA's responsibility to connect the right companies to the right municipalities. In order to do that, it's important to understand the priorities of the municipalities and the businesses they are interested in attracting. As the leader of LVGEA, Tina is the ‘dream catcher' for businesses that want to come to the Greater Las Vegas area, and the ‘director' connecting them to the right people in the region. I am a Tina fan and I am excited to see what is in store for Las Vegas' economic growth under Tina's leadership.  Takeaways From This Episode Other Key Takeaways in this episode include: Growth will happen in Las Vegas, but it needs to be responsible growth Las Vegas is still young and there is opportunity to learn from the leaders of the past It's important to be aware of our problems, but also celebrate our wins Thank you for listening! On this episode of Takeaways, I had the treat of talking to Somer Hollingsworth, a household name in the southern Nevada community. Somer has been in Las Vegas since he was a teenager and called the area a “Mecca” for him and his family when they moved here from Texas. After a 30-year career in banking, Somer was asked to lead the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA), or as it was known at the time, the Nevada Development Authority (NDA). One thing I loved about this episode is the massive amount of incredible insider Las Vegas information that Somer has to share. He was on the frontlines of some of Nevada's most notable economic development activities over the past four decades. He's got a ton of great stories and wisdom to share, and it was a genuine pleasure to have this conversation with him. Community Comes First What stood out to me as Somer and I spoke is his commitment to southern Nevada. He and his team at NDA were committed to bettering this community, and he wasn't afraid to get in the face of anyone who had a bad word to say about Las Vegas, whether he found them on an airplane or a boardroom. “We kicked butt and took names,” he said. “People were dedicated and said it was the best job they ever had because they were doing it for our community…. I never thought I would ever have that opportunity to make that kind of a change in this community that I love so much.” I think it's fair to say that the southern Nevada landscape would look much different without the influence of Somer Hollingsworth. While we spoke, he reminisced about this community before gaming was legalized federally and economic development here was in its infancy. He also shared his thoughts on the state of the state today and the LVGEA's new leadership, Tina Quigley. Key Takeaway: Fight for What You Believe In In this episode, Somer shared some amazing Takeaways, and toward the end, he had some great advice for anyone new to business. One thing I took away from our discussion was what can happen when people who love a community come together to make real change. The acts of a few who care can transform the future of an area. That's what Somer did for Las Vegas, and that's what we all have the opportunity to do today. Takeaways From This Episode Other Key Takeaways in this informative episode include: – History Matters; It Shapes the Future – If you want to be successful, there's no room for prejudice – We all should've invested in Las Vegas 50 years ago – If it's too good to be true … it's too good to be true – Your employees make it work: hire good ones and keep them happy I hope you enjoy! TAKEAWAYS – Life. Lessons. Learned. Every month, NAIOP hosts a breakfast panel featuring experts and community leaders. This month, the focus is economic development and commercial real estate in Nevada. After a brief intro of the program that I recorded, you will hear the panelists themselves and the program in its entirety! I hope you enjoy! Commercial Real Estate and Economic Development To kick off the panel, Tina Quigley, President and CEO of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, shares a story about sunglasses. After trying on a pair of sunglasses that she liked, she decided to settle on the less expensive pair—talking herself out of the better ones. Her friend lovingly called her out, acknowledging that she is BETTER than that.   Southern Nevada is at a point where we are attracting businesses and jobs from all over the country and the world, and some of those jobs simply because we are less expensive than other states. We must begin to ask ourselves if we want all of the leftover jobs, or if we want to strive for something more. Are the jobs we're attracting going to help propel our community toward economic prosperity? In this month's breakfast panel, we talk through the economic challenges and opportunities facing Southern Nevada commercial real estate today.   The collaborative opportunities available between the commercial real estate (CRE) sector, specifically NAIOP of Southern Nevada and the economic development agencies in southern Nevada are real. Nevada is still seeing the real estate boom playout. Both the leadership in NAIOP and LVGEA have a lot to gain by working together. This panel showcased how recognizing those advantages and capitalizing on the right ones will be a game-changer for Southern Nevada. NAIOP March Speakers Mathias Hughes, Vice President - Investment Officer of Prologis Tina Quigley, President & CEO of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) John Matthew Stater (Moderator), Research Manager of Colliers International. The sponsor for the March NAIOP breakfast was SR Construction! Key Takeaways: CME and the Economy  Here are some of the key Takeaways from the March NAIOP breakfast: Where do NAIOP Southern Nevada and LVGEA intersect when it comes to economic development? How do we take advantage of recent opportunities for diversification? What is driving the boom in industrial and does southern Nevada have natural advantages to attract companies? What industries are being targeted by LVGEA? How do areas like education and housing impact CRE and diversification? I hope you enjoy! “It’s important that we are connecting with the community constantly to share with them what we are up to and to figure out what it is they need from us.”   Tina Quigley wanted to be a pilot when she grew up. When she realized that, unfortunately, that wasn’t an option she studied airport planning and business. After spending 15 years at McCarran Airport, she joined the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) as Deputy General Manager. Now General Manager, Tina is joined by MJ Maynard (Deputy General Manager) where they discuss how they can maximize opportunities because of the unique structure of the RTC. Tina shares how 100% of RTC’s service is contracted out. The two also discuss ridership, farebox recovery, autonomous vehicles, and a ton of technology the transportation space should use to its advantage. As Tina says, “Technology is the new asphalt.” If you want to know more about RTC, you can check out their website.
