POPULARITY
Popular music is often riddled with misogynistic lyrics that objectify and demean women ... so why are we listening and dancing to it? Performing a sample of her original song "Top Knot Turn Up" and sharing clips from her female-directed music video of "See Me Thru," activist and musician Madame Gandhi explains why she's making sex-positive music that doesn't contribute to anyone's oppression -- and calls on music lovers to get down to tunes that empower everyone.

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Purely coincidental getting this one out today but certainly seems appropriate. This may be SXSW focused but it honors all of our fallen music festivals. Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle... I’ve still got my fingers crossed though for Bear Music Fest in September. Regardless, I have a remarkable mix of epic tunes here for you today, spanning all sorts of music genres. Folk to hip hop. Indie rock to afrobeats. And somehow it all fits together! If you wanna go deeper, I also have the 50 song cut, rather than this 15, on Spotify. Also, lots of YouTube links included below. I often lean on music videos to help me make the final cut and I found so many great videos for these songs that I wanted to share them with you directly. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to support the artists! Convention-breaking artist and activist Madame Gandhi, formerly the drummer for M.I.A., writes music that centers the female voice and experience, boldly making space for more women and femme rappers to follow. As part of KEXP's 2019 Iceland Airwaves broadcast from Kex Hostel, she performs tracks from her latest EP, Visions, skillfully jumping between a drum kit, beat pad and the mic, and taking breaks to explain her inspiration and intended impact. Recorded 11/06/2019. 6 songs - Waiting For Me, Her, Top Knot Turn Up, Young Indian, Yellow Sea, Bad Habits. Support the show.
Welcome to Talking Tunes by Girls Are Awesome where we deconstruct female music artists and the processes around one specific song. Talking Tunes is hosted by producer and songwriter Vakle. This episode is the second out of four Roskilde Festival special episodes and is centered around LA based drummer, producer, rapper, singer and activist Madame Gandhi. We caught her just hours before her show at the festival and are sitting in a cosy restaurant trailer in the backstage area hiding from the rain while having this nice little chat. We chat about going from drummer to artist, working on music long distance, why she only have female artists at her Roskilde show and a lot more! The song we’re talking about is called Top Knot Turn Up and was released in 2018. Tune in! Girls Are Awesome is a media platform and brand dedicated to increasing and redefining female representation.
