Podcast 112 - Bear Music Fest 2019: A Love Letter

Hey y'all, Hope you're hanging in there alright. I recently received the announcement I had known was coming but was hoping against hope that something would change. Bear Music Fest 2020 has been canceled. If you know me, I'm sure you've heard me go on and on about how amazing this small, multi-day, family friend, summer camp style, music festival outside of Yosemite was last year. And now, there's a whole podcast of that! I have to say though, despite all my gushing, I still don't feel like I really did it justice. If you're interested, my family and I will definitely be there next year. We'd be happy to show you around.   Oh and one observation I forgot to include (I always have a million of these for every episode) was while I was considering the similarities of the Little Stranger song "Augustina"  to some of my favorite hip hop tracks about women, I failed to mention also that it may just be that the song sounds it could be from Sugar Ray. As I've said before, so what if I like Sugar Ray (a lot)?!?    Bear Music Fest 2019 Official Recap Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de_Ea99f1UI   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists, Aaron     Instagram: ActListMusic Spotify: ActiveListener www.activelistenermusic.com   Tracklist 1. Happy Memorial Day everyone.   Purely coincidental getting this one out today but certainly seems appropriate. This may be SXSW focused but it honors all of our fallen music festivals. Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle... I’ve still got my fingers crossed though for Bear Music Fest in September.   Regardless, I have a remarkable mix of epic tunes here for you today, spanning all sorts of music genres. Folk to hip hop. Indie rock to afrobeats. And somehow it all fits together! If you wanna go deeper, I also have the 50 song cut, rather than this 15, on Spotify.   Also, lots of YouTube links included below. I often lean on music videos to help me make the final cut and I found so many great videos for these songs that I wanted to share them with you directly.   Thanks for listening and don’t forget to support the artists!   Aaron   Instagram: ActListMusic Spotify: ActiveListener www.activelistenermusic.com     Dead Horses - Turntable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3_WamS_N58   Taimane - Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpyK7nRkZmI   Benise - Malaguena (concert preview video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4DPEEQZagM   Jaguar Jonze - Kill Me With Your Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1C9pyJJFDE   Alina Pash - Bosorkanya (turn on Closed Captions for translation) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFFCbN49jG0   Madame Gandhi - Top Knot Turn Up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHF00mU6KYY   Audrey Nuna ft. Happy Friday! Yeah I mean, I know you didn't actually go to work today but maybe you're working from home, or maybe you're just at home wishing you could work. Either way, it's almost the weekend and I'm here to help bring that vibe a little early. This one is a party. I know I said it was gonna be SXSW but honestly, I'm procrastinating that podcast by making this podcast, and maybe another one too? Eh whatev, more music for y'all! SXSW 2020 Top 50 (actually like 58 or so) is up on Spotify now so if you want an early sneak peak into the event, that was in the past but that didn't actually happen, you can get after it at ActiveListener. Lots of good tunes there. But also, so many good ones here today, ready, for you, right now! Whether at this moment, it's you at home solo or it's your household traveling through time solo, this mix is meant to bring the party. I was totally feeling the party vibe while I recorded it so I'm right there with you across space and time. 24 house tinged jams squished into 77 minutes with an Easter egg for the fans. So much to love here. ***UPDATE: Egregious editing error discovered shortly after initial release. Fixed now. Recommend re-downloading***   Happy Friday everyone! New episode for you today. That's right. I'm back! Actually, I haven't been anywhere, except my house, for quite sometime. You can probably relate. If so, this is for you.    It's been a minute. It was really good to take a break but I am offically back. This ain't a one off. Though, I will admit the cadence will from slower than before. Which brings me to an important announcement, I'm dusting off the old ActListMusic Instagram account. It's not really so much for posting. There will be a little but really it's for communicating. One of the main reasons the podcast release rate is down is that I just don't get the breadth of musical input I used. So I am opening another way to get suggestions/recommendations from y'all. If you want more podcasts, show more music! Spotify links and playlists are a particularly easy and efficient way to get tunes to me.   But anyway, yeah, weird times. I hope everyone is doing okay. It's really incredible how this single unifying event is having so many different effects on everyones lives. We are all experiencing the same thing in so many different ways. Hopefully no matter what situation you're in, this brightens your day. It's the usual on tap today, with a lean to the Latin. Starts mellow and deep, electro cumbia styles. And then cranks up into the salsa and reggaeton realms. It's a great time and I'm excited to get it out to you.   Also very happy to announce (and the timing was coincidental) that the ZZK Film Sonido Mestizo, which I played a very very small role in helping to produce, is finally available for public release! Podcast 108 - 10 Year Anniversary: An Abstract

Happy 10 year anniversay!!   Can you believe it?! Ten years ago today I published the first episode of the Active Listener Podcast (link). So interesting to listen back to the early episodes. It’s been quite the evolution to create the much more polished product I’ve got now, though I still think there are manifold ways it could improve. When this all started, I had a secret stretch goal of putting out 50 episodes. Being that I was in my 20s, a decade was just not really even in my zone of comprehension. Feels good to be here. 10s of thousands of downloads by fans across 40 plus countries. Pretty remarkable.    So, what do we have here anyway? Well, What I have tried to do is provide a map of my musical mind. This mix both highlights my top three albums of all time and also takes selections from current favorites to build a picture of the landscape I’ve been painting over the last decade. For new listeners this is a great place to start. And for longtime fans it will bring back great memories. I have pointers to any number of old episodes so you all have plenty to keep you busy while I go on sabbatical.    Yes, that’s right. More detail In the podcast but I’m going on break. I’m not saying I’m quitting but just think of it like your favorite band. They didn’t break up. They’re just not touring right now. I’d say you can probably expect a SXSW 2020 podcast. In fact, I’m considering going to SXSW next year. You want to go? Hit me up by email at Aaron @ ActiveListenerMusic.com. It’s always a wild four days.   While I’m off, I left another set of breadcrumbs for you to follow to keep the music discovery going. As I think I mentioned, there were a whole bunch of songs featured on the podcast which are not on Spotify and hence are missing from the Spotify playlists for each episode (https://open.spotify.com/user/activelistener). Well, I went back through the podcast index, the 63 page pdf listing all 2000+ songs on the podcast, (http://www.activelistenerpodcast.com/p/podcast-index/) and highlighted in yellow all of the songs missing from the Spotify playlists. Check those out. Oh man, so many great tracks there. So many fantastic remixes that should not be missed. Check it out.   Anyway, whether you’ve been here since day 1 or you’re just showing up to the party, I’m very appreciative. I’m so grateful for all of the people I’ve met and experiences I've had thanks to this podcast. What's up everyone? I promise I have not been neglecting you. As I approach the ten year mark with this podcast (next month!!!) I have been doing some heavy digging through the archives. The previous 90s Disco episode was a good example. But putting these episode together from my past take a lot of time and thought, none more than this one. This is one that has been needing to get made from the beginning. I'm so happy to finally release it into the wild to share with you!   So the question of the day is, does the phrase "you died of dysentery" mean anything to you? I have actually tried this out and it really blows my mind when people have no idea what I'm talking about. How have you never played Oregon Trail?!?! Apparently if you did, you are very similar in age to me and you sit just between GenX and the Millennials. The term Oregon Trail Generation was coined by Anna Garvey in this 2015 piece (link). I love the summary, analog childhood and digital adulthood. Couldn't think of a better way to define it. More germane to the podcast at hand, it also means you were, like me, around 11-18 when all the songs came out, key formative musical years, and you lived the heyday of Alternative rock! If you're with me, I think you're going to have a lot of fun with this one. It was quite the nostalgic ride putting it together. If it's new to you, well then welcome to my version of classic rock. Either way, I would love to hear your reactions!   Oh and it's clearly not alternative rock but it was bonus track that had to get thrown in at the last second and the video is essential. Happy Friday! I know it's been a minute but this one is well worth the wait. As usual, I listened to every artist performing at SXSW (1500+ I think) and filtered it down to only my the best. Narrowing it down was so difficult but I set a strict limit of 15 tracks for this episode. I really should have just named it the "1 Percenters' Episode". It's the cream of the crop here folks. And we've got a sound for everyone. Hip hop to Bon Iver. Afrobeats to Bluegrass. Every year I am blown away by how blown away I am every year. SXSW is the best! Hope you enjoy.   Oh and if you want to dig deeper I've got my top 30 playlist on Spotify right next to this top fifteen podcast. (Check out the progress on Spotify @ ActiveListener) But, that's not what today is about. This one has gotten pushed back far too many times due to mandatory topics for episodes 100 and 101. But ever since I heard Adekunle Gold on DJ Edu's BBC Radio show sometime last year, it was a given that another Afrobeats mix was on the way. But the sound seems to be changing, at least from my ever-so-far-of-an-outsider's perspective. Seems like things are going just a bit more mellow. Almost and R&B version of Afrobeats if you will. Either way, I like it and it's time for you to get on board!   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.   Aaron Active Listener on Spotify   Tracklist 1.Short Skirt ft. Happy 2019! Just a little late. But trust me, this one was worth the wait. Seeing as this is number 101 it seemed only appropriate to take it back to where it all began, (and has continued to hit over and over again) drum and bass. Got a full mix on deck for you today. Not gonna lie, it may be the best mix job I've done yet. I even managed to talk over it too! I know y'all get lonely when it's just the music. And yes, the title is in inspired by S.P.Y.'s albums. Seemed only fitting since he starts us off.   In other podcast news, I had another episode nearly done but I think I am going to shelve it for the moment because I'm way behind on my SXSW preparations. My goal is to get that out before the festival but since I'm not actually going this year, I'm leaving that as a loose requirement. If you want to follow my progress, you can watch the evolving SXSW playlists on my Spotify (ActiveListener). And who knows, maybe I'll change my mind on getting that other episode out. So many things and never enough time.   Anyway, enjoy this one. Podcast 100 - The Australia Tapes

It’s here! Podcast 100!! Nine years in and still going strong. Though I should add, this episode may have been my most difficult ever.    The genesis came from a discovery made a few months back while going through old boxes back home in Texas. My mom came across three mix cassette tapes I made back in 1998. That summer, at 16, I went on an off-road / camping / wilderness adventure trip to the northern tip of Australia. It was amazing but there was a lot of driving so they told us to bring mix tapes. It was basically my first podcast episode! In addition to finding the tapes, I also knew where to find the journal I kept during the trip. A journal (handwritten in cursive!) that I had never reread and that I knew featured a lot of focus on a girl I met. So, sure to be embarrassing but probably also a good read. With tapes and journal in hand, I thought I had podcast gold and the episode would write itself. I was very mistaken on that front, which I discuss in the episode. It came out great though. Very happy with this milestone episode. There are some classics on there.    In addition to finishing episode 100, I have also finished making Spotify playlists of all 100 podcast episodes. You can find them all at ActiveListener. There are songs missing from almost every episode and I have tried to note that in the playlist details but overall it's pretty good. They work as great seed playlists for further discovery and Spotify generated radio stations. Also, for those that want to go deeper on the Australia mixes, I made playlists of each tape in it's entirety.    I hope you all have a great New Years! Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Super happy to be able to get this mix out in time for travel season. Got all sorts of 110-125 bpm house/electronica inflected vibes today. Light to heavy, and everything in between. Got the loungy bossa / Thievery sound, the almost late 80s early 90s pop vocal sound, the tech house sound al a Dirty Bird and others with some solid vocal repetition, some current pop vocal sounds, the jazzy disco house vibe, and even a Jon Hopkins sounding Odesza remix. And all of it's mixed together seamlessly! (or close at least) Let this be a soundtrack to your holiday.   Also, don't sleep on the last podcast! So much fun rockin out to do to that one.    Oh, and next up? Podcast episode 100! It's still pretty unreal to me that we gotten that far. I'm looking forward to sharing that one with you. Hey everyone, Got a really nice change of pace here for you. It is definitely not the jams. Today, we're dealing with some heavier lyrical content, which is part of what took me a little longer to actually sit down and record it. So first off, thanks for all the positive feedback on the last episode. People like the jams! Or at least that mix fired up the people that like to provided feedback. I was very conflicted on that episode because it was so long but I just had so much trouble making cuts! Glad it worked out. Also glad y'all are making use of the Spotify playlists, which you can find here. It's slow going but I am backfilling. Eventually they'll all be up. However, I'm finding for the early podcasts many songs are not on Spotify. You'll have to just check the original episode.   I've been listening to the really old episodes and I had forgotten, they used to be less than ten tracks. And once again got me thinking about the pro and cons of playlist size creep. I think less than ten is too short for a podcast that only comes out monthly but then again, for the most part, I think 30 is too many. Sometimes it's okay though. And occasionally it has to happen! With that in mind, brought down the editorial ax much more severely on this episode. It went through a lot of revisions. The original feel I was going for changed dramatically but it is 100% prime cuts now, start to finish.   Couple comments and corrections to the voice over. First, I misspoke. I first featured Maribou State not on podcast 55 as I said but instead on podcast 52, Understated House. Coincidentally, it was the first episode I featured Rufus (now Rufus du Sol). And second, I realized why I found that guitar sample on the Nightmares on Wax track so familiar. It's because Pretty Lights used the same sample for his song Finally Moving. Who sampled it first? Hard to say since both albums were released in 2006 but my money is on N.O.W. since he's the vet. I only realized today that the album I linked to for "You Wish" wasn't the classic In A Space Outta Sound but was instead from N.O.W. Is the Time, a best of compilation from Nightmares on Wax celebrating his 25 year career as the longest serving artist on Warp Records.   And now I realize with all that talking I've said almost nothing about the actual music on offer today. Eh. Just listen. It's good.   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.   Aaron www.activelistenermusic.com   Tracklist 1.My Life by ZHU / Tame Impala on My Life 2.Dissolve by Kllo on Backwater 3.No Place by RÜFÜS DU SOL on No Place 4.Oriens. It's a lot of music and this is after cutting half of it. I really wanted to take the time to max a full DJ mix out of this but I opted instead to just get the music out to you. As usual, I have too much music and too little time.   As mentioned in the podcast ZZK Records has begun producing these great documentaries capturing the amazing musical moment that is developing across South America. Typically my podcasts just flow organically out of what I'm currently listening to but sometimes I get a sense that I want to force a change is what I am listening to. I actively seek a different direction. That is what you have here. I have felt like I have just been only in the high energy realm for sometime. Now granted, that is where my predilection certainly lays but I do like to mellow it out sometimes and in this case I wanted to go with a mellow jazz vibe. I started with my go-tos and went from there. The genre grouping rapidly spiraled out of control however leaving me at a loss for what to title the podcast, hence the reference to this essay "Why Jazz isn't Cool Anymore" Anyway, I think you're gonna like the change of pace.   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.   Aaron   Tracklist (links to buy) 1.Keep On by Alfa Mist on Antiphon 2.Number One by Manu Katché on Neighbourhood 3.Where We Used To Live by e.s.t.       Oh my goodness, there was sooo much good music at SXSW this year! Of all varieties. From country to hip hop. From ska to soul. From folk to dancehall. All of it. So good. Your new favorite song is on this podcast. I’m sure of it. Happy listening.   Sorry it took a little longer this year to get through it all but narrowing down my favorites to just 30 was even more difficult than usual. For those unfamiliar with my process, every year I listen to every artist performing at SXSW. It’s on the order of 2000-3000 performers. I then narrow that down to a manageable size of around 100, which I use to build my schedule if I’m going to the festival (which I have sadly missed the last couple years). From there, I cull down to 20-30 bands for the podcast. If you want to hear the top hundred, or the top approximately 300 sorted by genre, I have all those playlists up on Spotify at ActiveListener. Prepare yourself. This one is big time. I couldn’t be more happy with how this mix came out and I’m so excited for you to hear it. Pretty sure I figured out the perfect order for the tracks and the transitions turned out well too!   Last time, I may have taken you all around EDC but today, we hit the Basspod stage and never pull away. The number of amazing DnB producers on display over the three days was ridiculous: Camo & Krooked, Wilkinson, Friction, Andy C, Metrik, Reid Speed, Calyx & Teebee, Chase & Status, and so many more that I’m forgetting. It was epic. There were more than enough artists to make a full mix but then there was so much other incredible drum and bass that came out over the last year, I had to expand the field of eligibility. The breadth of styles you can achieve all at 175 bpm (plus or minus) is remarkable. Uplifting to introspective, sparse and minimal to redlining bass thumpers, airy vocals to emcees over grimy beats. It’s all so good. Turn it up and start the party.   I once again opted to abstain from talking so you get a clean mix. I debated this quite a bit. On one hand, I really like to add the context of how I personally connected with a song or artist or some other tidbit to throw it. For example I heard London Elektricity say he had to fight to keep “Jungle Ballet” on the tracklist for Keeno’s album. OMG great job Tony! That’s the best track on the album if you ask me. I also like to provide a small motivation to go buy the music so you can hear it without me talking on it. Of course, now no one buys music, you just stream it. And I put the tracklist up on my Spotify (ActiveListener) so that motivation may be moot. But then on the other hand, for this style of music in particular, the tracks are best heard cleanly mixed in with other tracks. Hearing them in context is to hear them at their peak. You can watch the highlights from the Olympics but you miss the best part if you weren’t following the whole completion up to the finish. How many of you saw those two American women win that cross country race?? That was so awesome but the replay didn’t come close to doing it justice. Or I mean, come on, Shaun White… It doesn’t get better than that. Well except maybe double overtime game 7 western conference finals Laker over Kings. Or actually who am I kidding? The best was obviously Vince Young. But anyway, way off topic but yeah, I went for the clean mix. So enjoy. And anyway, I’m gonna talk all over the next one because that is SXSW 2018.   Thanks for listening and don’t forget to support the artists. Over the next 90+ minutes I will try to give you a flavor. And note this time, I'm not going to talk all over it. Instead of regaling you with stories, I've opted to try and show off each artist in the appropriate context, i.e. in the mix. The result is pretty hot. I think you're gonna like it.   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.   Aaron www.activelistenermusic.com       Tracklist 1.Connected by ATB & Andrew Rayel on Connected 2.Light It Up ft. Okay first off, big announcement. I have given myself the rather giant task of creating Spotify playlists of every podcast I have made. I've done about five so far. Got a ways to to go. But you'll see them pop up. Just search for ActiveListener (one word) on Spotify and you'll find them. Or here's the link https://open.spotify.com/user/activelistener   So yeah, you are going to be able to cut me out entirely if you want. I am doing this for a couple reasons. First, I am all about supporting the music and the streaming model has finally come of age as a legitimate way to support the artists. In fact, I've read articles saying that in the next few years it may not even be worth it for Apple or Amazon to have MP3 stores because so much of the traffic has gone to streaming. Things were a lot different when I started the podcast, two years before Spotify was even available in the US.   Second and more selfishly, I want to be able to listen to my podcast mixes when I'm out. I was at a dinner party the other night and someone wanted to put on one of my podcasts because they like they mix but then we both agreed it wasn't really the right venue to hear me talking over music. As much as I may like to hear myself talk, it's different out of a speaker than from my mouth.   Okay so if I haven't buried the lead already, we're at PODCAST 90! That's a lot! And it seemed like a time to do something special. This is one of those episodes I have been meaning to do since almost the beginning and it is particulaly appropriate because most of the music is from the 90s. Remember head banging, moshing, and crowd surfing? My roots! Man, were my roots angry. There was a lot of angst, anger, and aggression in a lot of the music I listened to back then. I should say, I was also still all about electronica, punk, alternative, and even soundtracks like Last of the Mohicans (best ever). But the focus today is the rage.   This podcast was so much fun to make. And I want to assure that I scream tested most of these songs in the car over the last few months. It was awesome. I still know all the words. I will be very curious to hear the response to this one. Some people will know every song and to others it will be all new. Let me know what you think.   Link for Final Fantasy Linkin Park Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY-MQZfhFi4 (How did we find this year before YouTube existed?!)   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,   Aaron Tracklist 1.More Human Than Human by White Zombie on Astro Creep: 2000 Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head 2.Wish by Nine Inch Nails on Broken 3.Got the Life by Korn on Follow The Leader 4.Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine on Rage Against the Machine 5.Tourniquet by Marilyn Manson on Antichrist Superstar 6.Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit on Significant Other 7.Leader Of Men by Nickelback on The State 8.Whatever by Godsmack on Godsmack 9.Toxicity by System Of A Down on Toxicity 10.Alien by Pennywise on Straight Ahead 11.Bad Habit by The Offspring on Smash 12.Last Resort by Papa Roach on Infest 13.Binge by Papa Roach on Infest 14.Faint by Linkin Park on Meteora 15.The Red by Chevelle on Wonder What's Next 16.Stupify by Disturbed on The Sickness 17.Mudshovel by Staind on Dysfunction 18.Fine Again by Seether on Disclaimer 19.Weak And Powerless by A Perfect Circle on Thirteenth Step 20.Bother by Stone Sour on Stone Sour 21.In The End by Linkin Park on Hybrid Theory 22.Bring Me To Life by Evanescence on Fallen 23.Parabol by Tool on Lateralus 24.Parabola by Tool on Lateralus

Jeremy Sole that is...   But before we get to that, as I was doing final post production for the podcast I realized IFE, who has possibly the best song ever (or at least best on this mix), hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico. I really should have known and I wish I had brought more attention to it. In case anyone forgot, for us Americans fighting against taxation without representation is kind of our whole thing. Puerto Rico is definitely American and definitely suffering from lack of a voice.   So what do I have in store for you today musically? Serendipitous digressions, that's what. This mix is to honor possibly my all time favorite radio DJ who gave up the reigns to his Wednesday night midnight to 3am slot after over ten years. I had so many musical discoveries thanks to that guy that it seemed only appropriate to serve up a mix in his honor. That and the finally apologize for mispronouncing his name (twice!) on the podcast years ago.   Also, tacked on a last minute addition to honor a good friend of our that passed away from cancer at far too young an age. Even still, it was long enough to positively affect a remarkable number of lives, including many that were only a single encounter. Her celebration of life was a testament to what a extraordinary human she was. 40 years was not enough but it's also 40 years to be thankful for.    Owiny Sigoma Band present Nyanza (Documentary): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WntB329hNFQ   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists, Aaron www.activelistenermusic.com   Tracklist 1.Animal (Mark Ronson Remix) by Miike Snow on Animal Remixes 2.Kami Ni Mantara by Gnawa Njoum Experience on Gnawa Njoum Experience 3.Anger (Alternate Extended Mix) by Marvin Gaye on Here My Dear Deluxe Edition 4.D/vision ft. Music lovers!   Once again, I am releasing a podcast on my birthday. You know, it is just one of those few times these days when I get some free time and I can't think of a better way to spend it than sharing great music. I am particullarly stoked on this mix. It covers a wide range of styles while attempting to maintain a consistent vibe/feel. It's all based around the Hidden Orchestra track "Still". From the first time I heard that piece, I knew I needed it featured prominently on the podcast but it is so unique! How to fit other songs around it? Well, that's the question this podcast answers. Enjoy.   Link to video from Apogee Session with the xx. On the day I sat down to record this episode we got the sad news that we lost Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park. While completely unrelated to the theme of this episode, based on my level of obsession with Hybrid Theory all those years ago, I thought it was only appropriate to begin with a tribute. It is also a motivation to finally dig into my archives actually make that "Angry Man Music" podcast episode that I have been considering all these years.   This episode started out sort of trying to be an R&B podcast but then it turns out that for the most part I don't really like R&B. Basically, I don't really know how you categorize this music except that they are essentially love songs. Or, songs about love and how it may not be working out so well. Or, not so much love as lust. Or, I don't know, it's just awesome (as usual!). Regardless, it's time to settle in and turn it up.   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists, Aaron     Tracklist (links to buy tracks) 1.Crawling by Linkin Park on Hybrid Theory 2.Gemini Feed by Banks on The Altar 3.Chill Out ft. UPDATE: I wanted to add a post script for this episode podcast. I got a lot of feedback about the inclusion of the first track, FDT. Most of it very positive, some not so much. To be expected really. I actually gave a significant amount of thought as to whether or not to include that song. There are clearly a significant number of reasons why one might not want to share a song like that. I carefully weighed these against my primary intention for the inclusion, to capture a cultural moment.   It is protest music and by definition will upset some people. This song in particular received a lot of press last year. It was recorded prior to the election. Time magazine and Rolling Stone both recommended it as one of the top Trump protest songs so I am not breaking any new ground. Hip hop also has a deep history as protest music, particularly music with an incredibly strident message (e.g. NWA - F*ck the Police). A lot of people are very upset and these are important things to recognize in out country and culture. The podcast is meant to reflect that.   In the podcast, I state the song does not really represent how I would approach the issue and I immediately offer up an alternative. I am fully aware that nuance will not be recognized by everyone but weighing all of those factors, I determined it was worth including.  -------------------------------------- I'm back! And I have so much great hip hop for you today. It took a minute to get this one out not just cause I moved which threw my life into a bit of a whirlwind but also cause it's really not all the most "fun" music. Don't get me wrong there are some slamming beats and some scorching flows. However there are also some heavier lyrics dealing with real life stuff. And then on top of that, real life is just kind of crazy right now! That said, I really love this mix. There is this ever present complaint that hip hop is dead. Once again, I offer up a podcast dedicated to showing that hip hop is alive and well.    As always, thank you so much for listening and don't forget to support the artists.   Aaron     Tracklist 1.FDT Part 2 ft. What's up music lovers!   Before we get to anything else, I want to bring you attention to ZZK Films. It is an offshoot of ZZK Records which, as you know, if one of my favorite labels of all time. They are producing some amazing films/documentaries about different aspects of Latin American mucis. Check the preview on their website. To get them finished, promoted, and distributed however, they are looking for some crowd funding. If you love the music like I do, go over and throw them some change. Think about all that garbage that comes through your cable box and you're paying at least $60 a month for that! This is something of actual cultural value. It's the giving time of year so think about it. There are 5 or so days left in the campaign. Oh and they've also got some fund matching happening! Link   Further reading:   New York Times - Found in Ecuador: A Time Capsule for the EarsNPR - The Lost Tapes Of Caife: A Vintage Ecuadorian Record Label Revived Remezcla - This Short Doc Traces the Deep African Roots of Music from the Ecuadorian Coast Bandcamp (best title!) - ZZK Records: How a “Random Gringo” from Texas Helped Latin American Dance Music Take Over the World   Now to the task at hand, a few month ago I had the amazing opportunity to make a personal pilgrimage to my musical Mecca if you will. I finally got to go to London to see some drum and bass. And this wasn't just any show. This was Hospital Records' very first outdoor music festival, Hospitality in the Park #HITP. The show was incredible. I saw so many of my favorite producers. It was an embarassment of riches for me. If you look at my notes below, you can see I couldn't keep myself at one stage very long!   There were so many artists that got left off this mix though. You can go on Spotify and listen to the playlist (link) I put together before the show to help me figure out who I wanted to go see. It it a far more inclusive list. But, it's not a carefully selected continuous mix like you have here. I'm not gonna lie though. I did have two screw ups while I was recording the mix live. (Pressed pause instead of play!!) I made the executive decision to go in and do a little post production and clean it up though so it will sound seamless.   As a side note, I want to shout out KCRW for having such an amazing online catalog of playlists from their shows. I have this weird musical memory thing where I can very specifically remember the circumstances of when or where I heard a certain song. For example I know exactly what I was doing when I first heard High Contrast and thanks to the KCRW playlist back catalog, I was able to go back over a decade and figure out exactly what day that was. And more importantly, that is was Scott Silva that was subbing in for Jason Bentley on Metropolis that day. This mix is all about having a good time.   The inspiration initially came from what I imagine a sunrise DJ set should sound like but then the sound broadened on me and it became an all encompassing, sun down to sun up.  Whether it's dancing till daybreak or sweating it out for fitness, these are the songs to help you get it done. **UPDATE** Here's the link to the amazing video I attributed to Konono #1 but is actually Sobanaz Mimanisa with "Kiwenbo".  The cofusion occured because I first heard each of them on Congotronics Compilations.  Either way, this is a marvelous video showing amazing music is everywhere! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJFpYV-Aw9Y) *************** Welcome to summer!  The pool parties and beach trips have begun and oh man did I get so sunburned at the beach the other day.  Who knew you needed to sunscreen your shins?!  This collection goes in several different but related directions and should, in addition to giving you an hour an a half mix for being outdoors, also provide the seeds for plenty of future discovery.  We start with Ghanaian Highlife and then we're all over the map with disco, breakbeat, jazz, afro funk, a little global bass, and of course some steel pans.  It's a lot of fun.    My intent was to have this out last week before I went on travel but of course I ran into a couple glitches during post (basically one huge unforced technical error on my part) so one or two date references may seem a bit out of place.  It turns out this whole podcast thing is way more than just picking and playing songs.  This go round I timed some aspects of the process because I never really know how much time I spend on an episode.  Selecting the songs could be any length of time.  Some tracks come from memories from years ago so that part is hard to define.  More quantifiable though is hardware setup (mic on stand, usb dj controller, usb analog to digital interface, two laptops, a second monitor for laptop 1) and software setup (Abelton, Serato, MS Word).  Hardware is always the same but I swear, there is a different software glitch every single time.  Minimum 30 minutes but easily can grow to an hour or more.  I also usually put in at least two hours writing up a basic script but then there are also the random hours of learning about things that eventually contribute to the story.  Recording itself is the length of the podcast, so about an hour and forty minutes this time.  Post production is another big chunk.  I have a couple compressors and a reverse limiter setup in Ableton now so I spend far less time than I used to getting audio ducking and general levels balanced correctly.  Overall, it does come out quieter than my purchased songs and I haven't really figured out why yet.  There's probably some easy fix, if so, I'm all ears.  (It's an overall gain thing rather than a loudness issue I think.)  As a matter of fact I'd love to hear any suggestions for upping the production quality.  Anyway, after exporting the mixdown I use Podreel on my PC to add in the chapters with track titles, album art, and links-to-buy.    That program is super finicky and requires me to use my old PC so again, ideas for other options would be greatly appreciated.  Apple removed the chapter functionality from GarageBand several versions ago for some reason so I don't know of any way to do it on a Mac.  All of that can take two to four hours, sometimes more.  And finally, there is the uploading, blog writing, tracklist prep, and social media posting.  So give or take there is a hidden eight or so hours in there for producing each episode.  Makes more sense to me now why it is hard to get episodes out! Well that little stream of consciousness paragraph got a little bigger than intended so without further ado, let's get to the tunes. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists. Music lovers, It's been way too long!  But don't fear, today's episode has a ton of great music and the next episode is coming right on its heels.  The theme de jour is hip hop.  We use a remembrance of two hip hop originators, lost this year, as a jumping off point for taking a look at some of the latest and greatest.  It's an often repeated criticism, and has been for a decade, that hip hop is over or there's nothing good anymore.  Maybe that's true on the radio but really commercial radio is what's over!  Well, not really but the point is the state of the hip hop union is strong.  And a huge part of that strength is diversity of sound.  This mix is all over the map so get ready. Here it is!  Another annual installment of the SXSW Edition of the Active Listener Podcast.  This was my seventh year in a row of attempting to listen to every artist playing at SXSW and the fifth year I actually got to go.  It is always such an amazing event and such a terrific time.  I'm really excited to share with you just a snapshot of the amazing artists I saw as well as just share some of the energy.   I thank you for your patience.  I know it was a bit of a wait but I really had to let it all sink in before I could even begin to process what I wanted to select for the show.  I think you're really going to like it. Below I have included the schedule of bands I actually saw.  If you think that's a lot you should see the list I start with when I go out at night!  I have also included some links to videos and a free album download from my top pick of the festival, Allan Rayman.  And of course, the tracklist is also a list of links for where to buy these tunes. What's up everyone!?   I'm so excited to finally get to tell you about all the cool stuff I've been working on, not least of which is this massive 3.5 hour fully live mixed drum and bass podcast I've put together for you but we'll get there.  First though, we've got a new podcast logo!  Seventh year, it was about time.  And along with the new logo, I've got some new social media stuff going.  There is a new Twitter handle (@ActListMusic) and I've started an Instagram (@ActListMusic).   Let's be clear that I am not a social media promotions expert.  I really don't even think of these as promotional tools at all. I couldn't really care any less about promotion.  I'm just constantly seeking the new and more effective ways to connect and communicate with you guys/gals as well as all those other music lovers out there.   Also there's a web address www.activelistenermusic.com.  Don't worry, the old site will still work for the next few years.  Also, I got a bunch of business card printed out, so I am fully ready to make some new friends next week at SXSW.  Speaking of SXSW, I have been putting in a ton of work checking out all the bands.  I've been posting little gems I've found up on Twitter so you can check those out.  If you're gonna be there, hit me up!  I've listened to about 1600 bands so far.  There are a set of genre sorted playlists of every band playing as well as another set of my picks (also genre sorted) up on Spotify.  Follow ActiveListener on Spotify if you want in on that.  Okay finally, now to the music at hand!  Last year I made a New Year's resolution to run 500 miles.  10 miles a week may not seem like that much but try doing it when you work 12 hours a day, have three kids, and produce an awesome podcast.  It's all about following through and in the end I accomplished my goal.  In doing so, I listened to a ton of dnb, mostly thanks to Friction and his weekly 3 hour drum and bass show on BBC.  Basically I was inundated with amazing drum and bass on the daily.  This podcast is the collection of my favorites.  And keeping it to only 59 tracks was actually a challenge. This is a three and a half hour mix that's slamming the whole way through.  I've gone easy on the talking and heavy on the mixing.  Yeah the mixing maybe sketching a few spots but whatever, I'm no DJ.  With my schedule I either practice or record the podcast.  I don't have time for both.  It was challenging enough to even find the time to just record for four hours.  I was up till almost 2am recording this and it was a school night!  Waking up at 5am for work was rough but I did it for you! Be sure to check out the massive tracklist below.  As always each track is a link to buy the music so bust out your wallets and fork over a couple bucks to help keep these tunes coming! I really hope you all have as much fun blasting this music as I have.  Pretty fitting podcast on approximately the 10th anniversary of me getting into the genre. Man time flies!  Where did January go?  And February too for that matter?  You'll have to pardon the delay.  That what happens when I try to work on three podcasts, SXSW research, and a couple other things that I will tell you about next time.  Anyway, I've put together a really great selection today, if I do say so myself.    I eschew the high energy sounds so ofter featured on the podcast for something a bit more minimal.  The collection is pretty diverse.  There's some prepared piano, some classic minimalism, some straight classical, some jazz, even some stuff from tribal Burundi.  Like I said, diverse.  And also, really good.  I'm excited for you to hear it. On the SXSW tip, for a seventh year in a row I will listen to every artists performing at SXSW.  Just like last year, I am forgoing the Unofficial SXSW Torrent I used for the first five years and instead, I have created genre specific playlists on Spotify including every artist performing at SXSW this year.  (I'll tell you all about the really slick method for making those later) As more artists get added to the lineup, I will add them to the playlists.  There are approximately 1600 artists on there so far.  As I listen to them, I am generating playlist of my picks.  I've gone through about 1000 so far and let me tell you, it is gonna be a good year!  You can find all of that by following ActiveListener on Spotify. Oh and yeah yeah, I realize now that the Ludovico Einaudi album Divenire came out in 2007, not last year.  I only first heard it last year thought so I'm standing by my statement that it was my album of the year okay?! Alright, getting to squeeze one more in before we close out 2015.  What a year it been!  So much has happened.  I went to Brazil.  I watched one rocket blow up and another one land.  I listened to a ton of music and went to a lot of show.  Most importantly for me, I witnessed the miracle of child birth once again.  Let me tell you, three kids is no joke folks. But, getting to the matter at hand, what’s in store for the podcast today?  Well, you want to know what is going to form the backbone of the soundtrack for my New Years party?  No, not drum and bass though that will be playing in the side room.  It’s that latin thing that I just keep coming back to.  I don’t have a good name for it as it encompasses so many sounds but there are three labels that are the foundation for me.  First of course must be ZZK based in Buenos Aires  followed by Wonderwheel Recording and Dutty Artz both in Brooklyn, hence the podcast title.  These are by no means the only players however.  And equally important are the local latin dance parties bringing the sound to life by delivering to people on the dancefloor: Peligrosa (Austin), Subsuelo (LA), Club Zizek (Buenos Aires), Que Bajo (Brooklyn), Tormenta Tropica (SF), etc. This one has been in the works for a while and I'm so happy to finally get it out to you.  I always really like everything I play but this one is particularly special and I can’t think of a better way to close out 2015.Get involved.  Let me know what you think and what you're listening to.  Twitter: @actlistmusic, Facebook: www.facebook.com/activelistener, or email: aaron@activelistenerpodcast.comThanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,AaronTracklist (links to buy)1.Sanacion by Nicola Cruz on Prender el Alma2.Orinoco by El Buho & Barrio Lindo on History of Colour EP3.Jardines ft. I'm so excited to finally get this episode out!!  It's been too long.  Life has been pretty hectic since we welcomed child number three into the world.  And then on top of that, I ran into a whole slew of technical difficulties.     For those that are interested, I finally changed mic, audio interface, and operating system.  I was still using Adobe Audition but it totally failed me once again so I made the switch to Ableton.  At some point I also somehow deleted my Ableton tracks.  Thankfully I had already exported a draft mix down.  I couldn't be bothered to re-record so it is what it is.  And finally, now that I've switched to Mac, I find out Garageband no longer supports enhanced podcasts (i.e. the ability to embed chapters, pictures, links, etc in the podcast).  Wtf?!  I used Podree on my old pc to do it for this episode.  Anyone have any suggestions for a Mac option?     Despite all of that, the music is still banging!  I hope you love this music as much as I do.  These are my jams right here!  They all have great videos so search them out on YouTube.   Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,   Aaron aaron@activelistenerpodcast.com     Tracklist 1.Personally by P-Square on Personally 2.Shake Body by Skales on Man of the Year 3.Kukere by Iyanya on Fresh Afrobeats Vol.1 4.Adaobi ft. I've been on this DnB journey since I first heard High Contrast - Brief Encounter (on KCRW of all places!) back in 2005.  It was slow to grow at first and for quite some time I never strayed too far from the jazzy, liquid and the deep, roller side of things.  As my experience with dnb has grown, particularly adding in the live show experience with epic sound systems, I have begun to appreciate what a dash of the hard stuff here and a smidge of the chopped up techiness there can really do to enhance the experience, to truly fill out the sound. So then, that brings us to the mix at hand.  We start out deep and melancholy and then drift slowly darker until it just gets filthy.  Then there's a sharp change and well... That's only the first third.  It's a good one if you ask me.  Enjoy. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.comTracklist (Links to buy the tracks)1. First up, we've got a public service announcement.  One of my favorite labels of all time, ZZK Records, is doing some crowd funding.  There's only a couple days left so if you're into the whole digital cumbia thing, get on it!  If you don't know what I'm talking about, get on it!http://zzkrecords.com/support/Now to the topic at hand...Now I could have just title this "The Train to Pound Town" or something else crass but instead decided to go with the more sophisticated allusion to the corporeal connection as clearly, the most recurrent motif in art across all ages and civilizations.  I guess Ii could have gone even more fundamental with "Genetic Imperative" or something but that seems a little sterile which is, of course, the exact opposite of what I'm looking for here.Basically, I'm not ashamed to let you know that the same jokes have been making me laugh for 20 some odd years and my immaturity shows no signs of abating.  This mix was so much fun to put together.  I got to revive some gems from my childhood as well share some more recent guilty pleasures.  There are some great remixes.  There's even a recommendation for a most improbable but likely astonishing autobiography coming out in August (link).  And as always, I know I've got some tracks you've never heard before.Video LinksBrandy - Wanna Be DownKonshens - Gal Ting (Viral Video)Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.comTracklist (Links to buy tracks)1.Tarpuricusum Sarata (Captain Planet Remix) by Luzmila Carpio on Luzmila Carpio Meets ZZK2.Chant d'Amour by Chants Populaires Tahitiens on Presents Hot Women Singers3.Pu$$y by Iggy Azalea on Ignorant Art4.Kitty-Kitty by 69 Boyz on Nineteen Ninety Quad5.Me So Horny by 2 Live Crew on Greatest Hits6.I Need A Hot Girl by Hot Boys on Guerrilla Warfare7.Don't Tell 'Em ft. Alright summer is here!  That means lots of time outside, in the pool, and by the grill which obviously necessitates all kinds of new music.  Today I have for you a sampling of different directions to go when you start thinking about what kind of summer music mix you are looking to go for.  This is really one of my favorite types of podcasts.  I've got the newest sounds I'm jamming combined with classics from my past.  I actually had to order two physical compact discs because I couldn't find the albums digitally!!  For me, last summer was all about the amazing albums from Quantic and Jungle mixed in with some afro funk and high life.  Something tells me I am going to be doing some recycling of those but there are many solid additions to get into.As I write this I am remembering that I completely forgot to put a track from Clean Bandit on the mix.  My bad!!  Here's the track I was gonna use. "Come Over"  Without it, the mix is missing that taste of dancehall, which is a summer must.  They were amazing at Coachella.  Watching them from the shade of the palm trees while they owned the mid day main stage is the definition of an ideal Coachella moment.  I'll make it up to them on a podcast soon but you should check out their album New Eyes.  Classically trained band playing their version of house music.  So good. Links referenced in the podcast:Awesome unofficial Kaytranada videoThomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #1Thomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #2As a side note, I really try to keep all comments on the podcast positive but I must share my complete disdain for Adobe Audition's recording.  I switched over from Audacity around podcast 30 or so because the sound processing tools were a little better.  While I may still use it for post processing, never again will I trust it for recording the voice over.  This is the second time that upon closing, Audition not only deleted all the temp files but also the sound files I had saved, multiple times.  Searching around on the internet, I found I am not the only person to run into this serious issue.  And even worse, this is the second time it's happened to me.  Shame on me.  Luckily, this time I had already exported a draft so I didn't have to rerecord the whole podcast but it means I didn't get to go back and balance all the levels just right, fix some plosives, etc...  Anyway, if I hadn't said anything you probably wouldn't have noticed but I don't want any of y'all to run into this same problem.  Use something else for recording.  Now let's pump the positivity and get the jams goin!!Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.com Tracklist (these are links to buy the songs)1.Mabasa (Work) by Thomas Mapfumo on Mabasa2.Dancing On Quicksand by Bad Suns on Language & Perspective3.The Boys of Summer by The Ataris on So Long, Astoria4.Too Drunk to F*** by Nouvelle Vague on Nouvelle Vague5.Let It Carry You by José González on Vestiges & Claws6.Far Nearer by Jamie xx on Far Nearer / Beat For - EP7.Helios ft. Well I just went on an album buying spree (and you should too!!) because once again, the research paid off.  I listened to around 1500 bands.  Narrowed that down to 100 or so.  And then wrote out an itinerary of about 40 which, I actually got to see.  It is so much work but the reward is so worth it.  SXSW is really something I live for.  To all my friends and family that helped make it such an awesome event, and for understanding when I could only hang out for 10 minutes because I had the next show to run off to, this podcast is my thank you.  If you're curious where I was running off to, I have included my ridiculous itinerary below.  I would love for someone to figure out how many miles I put it.Wed730-800 Keeper at Swan Dive Patio800-840 Aisha Burns at Lucille900-940 Marian Hill at Blackheart930-1000 Basecamp at Lucky Lounge1000-1040 The Seshen at The Iron Bear (TruThoughts Showcase)1100-1140 Odesza (badges only) at The Parish1130-1245 Kidnap Kid at V Lounge1200-1240 Little Simz at Latitude 301200-1240 Jared and the Mill at Esther's Follies1:00-1:50 The Last Bison at Esther's FolliesThur800-850 Rubblebucket at IFC Fairgrounds840-925 Doomtree at Karma Lounge930-1010 Until the Ribbon Breaks at Bar 961000-1040 Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at Flamingo Cantina1100-1140 Zionstereo at Speakeasy1200-1230 DeJ Loaf at Tap Room at The Market1230-200 Austin Bassdrive Sessions at Dozen ClubFriday730- Photay at Central Presbyterian 800- Irene Diaz at Flamingo Cantina830- Nyla at Palm Door910- Kate Tempest at Maggie Mae's Rooftop1000- Joel Laviolette at Russian House1100- Chadwick Stokes at Lucky Lounge1130- Badbadnotgood at place that used to be Antones1230- Ghostface Killah with Badbadnotgood at place that used to be Antones115-300 Hernan Catteno at KingdomSaturday230-300 GFOTY + Spinee at Hype Hotel300-345 A. Two weeks to go until SXSW and what is this?!  It's not a SXSW preview!  Yeah I know.  I decided instead to do a SXSW Recap podcast.  Since I imagine most of you aren't going, it will probably be more interesting to hear about what I actually went to and liked rather than just what I think might be good.  For those of you that want a preview though, don't fret.  The SXSW Torrent did actually come so you can check that out.  Or, you can check out what I've put together on Spotify (link).  I have put together two sets of playlists for you.  One set, sorted by genre, is the complete listing of all the artists performing at SXSW (that were available on Spotify).  It's something like 1500 artists.  I, of course, have listened to (or will have in the next two weeks) all of them and that is the second set of playlists, my selections.  It is from this far paired down group that I will be building my schedule.  So head over to Spotify. Check it out.  And follow the playlists so you will get notified when I update them. For the other nerds out there, you might be interested to know that I actually wrote a Matlab script to crawl the SXSW webpage and populate a spreadsheet with artist, genre, and hyperlink to their SXSW page.  I then used this spreadsheet to check off which artists I had added to Spotify playlists and which songs I had listened to.  The making the playlists part did kind of take forever.  Next year I'm gonna learn some JSON so I can just use the Spotify API.  If I actually get that going, you can expect Spotify playlists from tons of different music festivals to start showing up.  I'll keep you posted. As for this episode, well, you've read enough of my writing already.  Just listen.  One correction though.  It's only been 13 years, not 14.Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,AaronTracklist (these are links to buy the tracks)1.Pine Needle Tea by Chadwick Stokes on The Horse Comanche2.Dyin Day by Anais Mitchell on Young Man In America3.With You by Roméo Testa on The End4.I Loved You by Alice Russell on To Dust5.Open by Rhye on Woman6.Warm Water by Banks on Goddess7.Open Air ft Joyce Wrice by TOKiMONSTA on Desiderium8.Green Garden by Laura Mvula on Sing to the Moon9.Don't Wait by Mapei on Hey Hey10.And So We Dance by Kellylee Evans on I Remember When11.Betray My Heart by D'Angelo and The Vanguard on Black Messiah

Back with another one pretty quick.  Actually I guess the release date isn't that quick but I did record it a week after I recorded the last one.  Why the rush?  Well first off, I just have too much music to share with you.  Secondly though, it's SXSW and Coachella time so you know what that I means.  I have absolute heaps of new music to get through.Things are gonna run a bit different for SXSW this year.  The torrent is no more.  So instead, I got a Spotify account and am making playlists, sorted by genre, of all the artists performing at SXSW!  Yes it's a ridiculous task but I consider it a public service.  Tell your friends.I am then also listening to all songs and making a second set of playlists of my picks.  So, get on Spotify and check it out.  You don't need to pay if you don't mind listening on shuffle.  My username is ActiveListener.  I've already got a playlist up for my top 60 (out of 160) Coachella artists. If I have enough time, I will make a preview podcast before SXSW.  That's the plan anyway, so look for something coming in the beginning of March.  In the meantime, watch the Spotify playlists grow and evolve. And oh yeah, guess I haven't really introduced the present podcast at all.  Well...  It's all remixes.  Except for one that's not.  Just listen.  It's one of the more varied podcasts I've made and I gotta say, I really like it.Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronwww.activelistenerpodcast.comTracklist1.Lose Yourself by Kellylee Evans on I Remember When2.Runnin (Machinedrum Remix) by Kelis3.Gangsta (Deejay Theory remix) by Kat Dahlia (Free Download)4.Baby (Ju$tin Be Beurre For The Lulz Remix) by We Sink on Ju$tin Be Beurre For The Lulz (Free Download)5.Me & U (VILLAGE Bootleg Remix) by Cassie (Free Download)6.The Key (ft. This is it!  The first podcast of 2015 and also the first podcast that I mixed live!  Amazingly enough my laptop was able to able to handle both Serato and Audition and I was able to handle (somewhat) the mixing and talking at the same time.  Definitely stumbled over myself a few times but hopefully the mistakes adds some humanity and facilitates a more full communication of the moment.  Either way, it was super fun.  Made for much more of a performance feel which for me is awesome.  One day I hope to actually broadcast live but I have some technical challenges to work out first eg. how to do real time noise reduction, compression, and side chain ducking.  If only I had a PhD in audio, not mechanical, engineering. Now because I was a bit overwhelmed during parts of this recording I forgot to say some stuff.  So, here is the list of corrections, clarifications, and additions to my commentary on this podcast.- For the second track, I extolled this duo from Seattle but forgot to mention their name, Odesza.- On the third track, I don't think I made it all that clear that Dirtybird is the record label.  That label is run by Justin Martin and Claude von Stroke- I wanted to mention that Mant is on MTA Records out of the UK.  MTA is better known to me as the home of some amazing drum and bass artists.  Lately of particular interest would be Kove and Dimension.  Dimension is absolutely killing it right now.Another announcement (which I may have mentioned already), all of the podcast episodes have finally been moved from the old blogspot site to the new (ish) site.  I wish I could also have brought over the tens of thousands of views that site had for the counter but whatever, we'll get there again.Along with all the old episodes being up, I have also finally gotten the Podcast Index cleaned up and posted.  Now you can see, in one text file, all the songs that have featured on the podcast.I know this is getting long but one more thing.  I finally got Spotify.  I'm very conflicted about it but it appears that with the death of the SXSW Torrent, Spotify is the only way I am going to be able to efficiently go through all the showcasing artists.  So, if you want to follow the progress you can follow me on Spotify at ActiveListener. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronwww.activelistenerpodcast.comTracklist (These are links to buy the tracks)1.Kudausheby Afriquoi on Kudaushe2.Say MyName (ft. Five years!  It's hard to believe but I've been at this for five years!  What started out as an off the cuff suggestion from my wife has become my favorite hobby and frankly, a body of work that I pretty proud of.  Not only is it a great musical journal for myself but it has connected me with people all over the world, facilitated incredible conversations with friends and strangers alike, and opened doors to all sorts of amazing experiences.  Five years in, my motivation hasn't changed.  I don't do this to spread my name or to try and impress.  I do it because I just love music.  I love listening to it, seeing it live, playing it, thinking about it, and as you already know, I really like talking about it.  And that last bit is where the podcast has been such a gift.  Again, some of the conversations, discussions, and connections, and experiences it has enabled are, well, to use a favorite word of mine, awesome.Alright so anyway, here is episode 63.  While this is a hastily put together collection of tracks, most of these I have have been meaning to get on the podcast for somewhere between days and years.  They have just been floating around in the unsorted list.  Some songs are just difficult to fit into the theme of the month.  They are all amazing though and the fifth year special seemed like an opportune time for a broad survey.Come join the conversation over at www.facebook.com/activelistener or shoot me an email at aaron@activelistenerpodcast.com.  You know I'm always looking for new tunes. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.Aaronwww.activelistenerpodcast.comTracklist (THESE ARE LINKS TO BUY THE TRACKS)1. If you don't mind, I'm just gonna go ahead and let you know ahead of time that the song selection for this podcast is amazing.  How is it so good?  Well, the world of drum and bass is just exploding with great tunes these days.  It doesn't matter that dnb is barely a blip on the radar here in the States.  The shows are still happening and let me tell you, they're awesome.  Also I think it was Spearhead Records that signed with Capital Records (ie independent dnb label joins major label) so it's coming.  While I don't necessarily look forward to it ever hitting mainstream, with so many good tunes, I don't see how it doesn't at some point.  Either way, the time is now and this mix is sick.  And, as an added bonus it's fully mixed and I recorded the voice over live.  Yeah, big stuff this month.  Hopefully you have as much fun listening as I did making it.By the way, this is best listened to loud and with good bass.  If headphones at work is all you got, hey, I'm with you.  No problem.  It will still be good.  I'm just saying, if you can get this going on some type of system, well, it'll take it to the next level. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.AaronTracklist (THESE ARE LINKS TO BUY THE TRACKS)1.
