Raised in Athens, GA, Lemuel "Lemmy" Hayes has called Nashville home for over 10 years, and has the breadth of music industry experience of a true seasoned pro. He's worked with a wide variety of artists, including Berlin, Cindy Wilson of The B-52s, Nicki Bluhm, Dead Horses, Kylie Morgan, and Spencer Crandall, among many others. In this very raw, 2-hour conversation, Lemmy recalls the many ups and downs of his journey to Nashville, including persevering through a serious arm injury, being a tour manager in Europe, and his stories of working various odd jobs inside and outside the industry. Lemmy offers his perspective on social media for both artists and players, and how he discovered his second passion for photography. Dan Wolff, along with Sarah Vos, have been the stable nucleus of Dead Horses since the band's inception. I interviewed Sarah back in 2016, fell in love with their music, so I'm so excited to have Dan here to share more of the riches they've created in the ensuing 7 years. Every song they share is an opportunity to feel deeply the heart of the world, and to be part of its healing as well.

Welcome back to the show! I've got a good one for y'all today. I start off by getting up to date with the NBA Playoffs (as much as I can given that I recorded before the Monday night games) then I quickly hit on some of the various headlines from a busy sports weekend. After that, we get into the main event. It's the 2nd annual Recklessly Early Predictions segment where I make sweeping predictions about the upcoming NFL season before we even get into mandatory OTAs. Just like last year, these will be revisited after the Super Bowl next February and I'm looking forward to seeing just how hilariously wrong I end up being. Like I said, I think this was a really good episode so I hope y'all think so as well. If you enjoyed, why not subscribe, rate 5 stars, like and/or share with your friends who might want to listen? It's all free. Just sayin. Twitter: twitter.com/CalebVrzak Email: unqualifiedanalysis@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeVE9QMa5EP4t_Y3-W0GUbg

It was 1994, and a new virus was killing racehorses in Australia. Then it killed a horse trainer who was caring for his charges. The virus, called Hendra after the Brisbane suburb where it first surfaced, is a relative of the measles virus.Hendra virus has been traced to large, furry bats known as flying foxes. While it doesn't make the bats sick, they can spread it to animals such as horses, which can become very ill and die.And there's an interesting twist. Researchers led by Dr. Raina Plowright, a professor in the department of Public and Ecosystem Health at Cornell University, have found the bats only hang out around the horse farms when they're hungry. The solution? Blooming trees. It's a perfect example of how climate change, animal health, and human health are linked. In this episode of One World, One Health, listen as Dr. Plowright explains how she and colleagues solved a decades-old mystery and came up with a possible solution.

We welcome Sarah Vos and Dan Wolff , better known as Dead Horses, one of Americana music's 'buzziest' bands. Fresh off the release of their newest album 'Brady Street' (Out Now) the band has been crossing North America touring what is one of their most special albums yet. The album is their first release since 2018's 'My Mother The Moon' which charted on the Americana Top 50 radio charts for three consecutive months. The single “Turntable” accrued more than 35 million spins on Spotify and was also featured on the Amazon and Apple Americana playlists. The pair's select media highlights include a Rolling Stone “Artist You Should Know” mention as well as profiles in Billboard and NPR. Join us for an in-depth chat with a duo, that includes navigating high standards in their music, remembering their late friend that influenced the band name, 'pinch me' moments in an unforgettable 2022 and much more. Gibson has an incredible history of making some of the best acoustic guitars. But after 100 years, which ones are their best acoustic guitars ever made? Whenever I talk about Gibson Guitars, I'm always sure to upset, puzzle, dazzle, and mystify some folks. So, before you go any further, I want you to know this is just my perspective on things. Take it for what it's worth. I've played thousands of guitars for even thousands of more hours. When I made this list I wanted to remove some of the super expensive, vintage Gibson acoustic guitars that are truly cost prohibitive. Many Gibson acoustic guitars are just way too expensive, but just know I considered putting them on this list. From the Keb Mo signature to the True Vintage J-200, there are some incredible guitars on this list. Be sure to watch the full episode to see if your favorite Gibson acoustic guitar is on this list! In addition to talking about some of the best acoustic guitars Gibson has made, we'll take a look at some comments from the episode I did on the 10 best guitar albums from the '80s. Seems like a ruffled some feathers, so be sure to tune and see if you agree with your fellow TAC Family members! Jim and Mike interview FANTASY recording artist ANDREA VON KAMPEN (Lincoln Nebraska Singer/Songwriter) ABOUT ANDREA VON KAMPEN Andrea von Kampen is a folk singer-songwriter based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose effortless vocal delivery has been praised by Hear Nebraska as “soulful and worn-in.” With the successful release of two EP's, Another Day (2015) and Desdemona (2016), a Christmas EP (2016), an Audiotree Live album (2017), and her debut full-length album Old Country (2019), Andrea has quickly established herself in the recording studio and on the road. She has shared the stage with artists such as Tall Heights, Ira Wolf, Dead Man Winter, The Brother Brothers, Dead Horses, Darling West and many more. Old Country, Andrea von Kampen's debut full-length album, was released on February 8th, 2019. The album was recorded and mastered in Nebraska and features exclusively Nebraska-based musicians. Inspiration for Andrea's songs often come from literature, art, and nature; in particular the literature and nature of Nebraska and the Midwest. The title track, Old Country, is based on the book “My Ántonia” by Nebraska author Willa Cather. Her single, Portland, received notable attention including features on The Bluegrass Situation, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Additionally, Amazon Music Canada featured Portland in their ‘Top Songs of 2018' playlist. In a review of Portland, Ear To The Ground Music said, “It's not so much about where you're going, but that you want to get away. That emotion of “idealistic escapism” is one that listeners can all connect with, whether or not we want to go to Oregon or somewhere else. The inflection in von Kampen's vocal has the conviction of a gospel track and the sincerity of a Dylan folk ballad.” Andrea von Kampen first appeared in the public eye with her submission of Let Me Down Easy into the 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. Within 24 hours of submission, NPR Music, All Songs Considered tweeted her video as the featured artist of the day, saying “we were completely blown away.” Ultimately, Andrea finished the competition as a top ten finalist, which lead to increased popularity of her EP, Another Day, specifically her song Trainsong. Since then, her EPs have amassed millions of streams on Spotify and continue to grow. Her newest album "THAT SPELL" was released on August 6, 2021 You can visit andrea's website to order the album and other cool merchandise at: www.andreavonkampen.com COPYRIGHT CLAIM : the songs TAKE BACK THY GIFT, TETON, JULIA and TRAINSONG used with permission from : Andrea Von Kampen, Jimmy Rhine, Concord & Fantasy Recordings You can find our podcast on Apple Music, Spotify, Podbean, Iheart Radio, Pandora and anywhere you listen to podcasts. Judge Jackson tried one of the most famous cases in modern US history, that of US v. Microsoft. Not wanting this anti-trust case to drag on indefinitely as so many had in the past, Judge Jackson sought to keep the courtroom moving and regularly reminded the participants of that goal, in clever ways. This quote was meant to be one of those reminders. We can use it to keep ourselves moving, as well!

On the thirteenth installment of “A Good Podcast” we discuss getting a van, finding dead horses, and hand fetishes --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
As a member of Dead Horses, Dan Wolff has performed relentlessly, opened for legendary bands like The Who, toured all over the country with renowned bands like Trampled By Turtles and Mandolin Orange, played at legendary venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater and Alpine Valley, and (along with longtime bandmate Sarah Vos) has earned a reputation as one of Wisconsin's — if not the Midwest's — most accomplished Americana acts. Before he was making a living exclusively as a musician, Wolff was getting in trouble for playing Bloodhound Gang and NOFX covers in high school and killing time in his college years with decidedly less ambitious musical endeavors like Cocktooter. Recently, Wolff joined host Tyler Maas at Milwaukee Record headquarters (thanks, vaccines!) for the first in-person My First Band recording in more than a year. After the requisite conversation about how weird it was to be in the same room and how excited they both are for the safe return of live music in some capacity, Wolff talked about abruptly ending a tour last March, spending the past year-plus learning how to record, the mixed returns from the handful of socially distant shows Dead Horses tried last summer and reforming an old band (Offend Your Friends) over Zoom. Of course, the discussion also turned to Wolff's musical past, including invaluable music lessons in the small Wisconsin town of Berlin, bawdy bands in his teens, the musical opportunities Oshkosh afforded him, the start of Dead Horses, the band's eventual move to Milwaukee and some of his most memorable on-stage and in-studio moments in the years since. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. On yesterday's show, I promised to *try* to create an original haiku. I did it!! I think I'll do more (stay tuned). A listener asked me to research the meaning and origin of the phrase “beating a dead horse.” So I did. Not that I condone or encourage beating dead horses, I just did the research and present it for your edification.
Today I talked to KT Sparks about her debut novel Four Dead Horses (Regal House, 2021) On May 1, 1982, eighteen-year-old Martin Oliphant watches a horse drown off the shore of Lake Michigan—the first of four equine corpses marking the trail that will lead Martin out of the small-minded small town of Pierre, Michigan, onto the open ranges of Elko, Nevada, and into the open arms, or at least open mics, of the cowboy poets who gather there to perform. Along the way, he nurtures a dying mother, who insists the only thing wrong with her is tennis elbow; corrals a demented father, who believes he’s Father Christmas; assists the dissolute local newspaper editor; and serves stints as horse rustler and pet mortician. For thirty years, Martin searches for an escape route to the West, to poetry, and to his first love, the cowgirl Ginger, but never manages to get much farther than the city limits of his Midwestern hometown—that is, until a world- famous cow horse dies while touring through Pierre, and Martin is tapped to transport its remains to the funeral at the 32nd Annual Elko Cowboy Poetry Confluence. KT Sparks is a writer and farmer whose work has appeared in The Kenyon Review, Pank, and elsewhere. She received an AB in Politics, Economics, Rhetoric, and Law from University of Chicago, an MA in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from Oxford University, Brasenose College, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University in Charlotte, an educational grounding that matches her lifelong interest in everything and mastery of nothing. She spent twenty-five years in Washington DC, most of it in the US Senate, as a policy analyst and speechwriter and continues to be involved in progressive politics. When she's not reading fiction (all types) or trying to banish weeds from the vegetable garden, she practices Zen Buddhism, binges British detective series, and cooks stuff grown on the farm (or by her more talented neighbors). Her greatest passion is her large distended family, which includes children, stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, siblings, parents, in-laws, exes, and seemingly unending concentric circles of spouses, partners, fiancés, more exes, and more spouses—shining bright and swirling outward, like the rings of Jupiter, but less dusty. KT lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with her husband, dog, a fluctuating population of barn cats, and no horses, dead or alive, waiting for the kids to come visit, or at least call for God’s sake. Four Dead Horses is her first novel. G.P. Gottlieb is the author of the Whipped and Sipped Mystery Series and a prolific baker of healthful breads and pastries.
