Today's guest is a prolific producer behind Sicko Mode, Broccoli, Bad at Love, Kiss Me More, Laugh Now Cry Later, First Class, and APT. — but whose real story isn't the catalog. It's how most of those songs happened by accident.A classically trained concert pianist who spent his teens grinding through Liszt and Prokofiev knuckle-busters, Rogét quietly became one of the most important producers in modern pop and hip-hop — and almost none of it happened the way he planned. This is one of the more honest conversations about what mastery is actually for — what happens when a decade of preparation collides with a 9pm pull-up, a stock preset, and a flute sound turned on by accident. Jack Harlow is from Louisville, Kentucky, and started performing and releasing music in 2015, when he was in high school. In 2020, he released his first album, which went double platinum. He was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. He's had multiple number one hits across his first three albums. For his fourth album, Monica, which just came out in March 2026, he switched things up dramatically. I was curious how and why—how did someone who had so much success as a rapper approach a new way of making music? So for this episode, I spoke to Jack Harlow about the song “Say Hello,” which is the closing track on Monica. For more info, visit songexploder.net/jack-harlow.

On a recent podcast interview, Kentucky rapper Jack Harlow said that, to craft his new album Monica, he “got blacker.” The problem is… Jack Harlow is white. The statement, while extremely tone-deaf, speaks to his intentions with this musical pivot: musically, Monica turns to the historically Black genres of R&B and neo-soul to craft a new image designed to shed the stigma of being a “white rapper.” The pivot is more costume than culture, but in doing so, Harlow seems to be following in the footsteps of several white rappers over the past decade. Artists like Post Malone, MGK, and Jelly Roll have all had radical shifts in sound and image over their career, separating themselves from their roots in hip-hop. So, in response to Monica, Reanna and Charlie ask: where have all the white rappers gone?  Links: Newsletter, YouTube Songs discussed: Jack Harlow – First Class Jack Harlow – Lovin On Me Jack Harlow – Trade Places Post Malone, Hank Williams Jr. – Finer Things Jack Harlow – Tyler Herro Jack Harlow, Doja Cat – Just Us Jack Harlow – Lonesome J Dilla, Common, D'Angelo – So Far to Go D'Angelo – Spanish Joint D'Angelo – Feel Like Makin' Love Jack Harlow – All Of My Friends Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You Paul Wall, Big Pokey – Sittin' Sidewayz Beastie Boys – Fight For Your Right Post Malone – White Iverson Post Malone – Leave Post Malone, Morgan Wallen – I Had Some Help James Taylor – Machine Gun Kelly MGK – LOCO MGK, blackbear – my ex's best friend 5 Seconds of Summer – She Looks So Perfect MGK – cliche Jelly Roll – F*ck What They Talkin Bout (ft. Hosted by Analytic Dreamz, this breakdown explores Harlow's dramatic pivot from pop-rap hits like "What's Poppin," "First Class," and "Lovin on Me" to a no-rap, fully sung project rooted in R&B, neo-soul, soul, and jazz influences.Recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the 9-track, 28-minute album features live instrumentation, jazzy guitars, horn sections, organ, and soulful grooves. Heavy inspiration from D'Angelo's Voodoo shines through, with collaborators including Ravyn Lenae, Omar Apollo, Mustafa, and Robert Glasper adding prestige and bridging Harlow to alternative R&B and jazz audiences.Analytic Dreamz examines the album's reception—Variety praises its warm, soulful upgrade, Clash calls it an unexpected delight tied to the Soulquarian movement, and Okayplayer highlights vulnerability—while noting polarizing views from critics questioning the niche shift from hip-hop roots. With over 11 billion career streams fueling momentum, Monica employs smart strategies: no lead single, birthday drop for engagement, short runtime for repeats, limited-edition vinyl via direct-to-consumer, clean lyrics for broader playlists, and a focus on expanding into neo-soul/R&B lanes amid risks of alienating core fans.Analytic Dreamz unpacks sales projections (5K–10K pure units expected, potential Top 10 Billboard 200 debut via streaming), market facts, and how this evolution fits larger 2025-2026 hip-hop trends.Tune in for an in-depth, no-hype analysis of Jack Harlow's reinvention on Monica. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
